Event Date and Time:
Thu, 09/06/2012 - 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Location:
Hannaford Hall, Abromson Center, USM Portland

The School of Nursing at the University of Southern Maine is proud to announce the inaugural lecture in the Martha Skoner Lecture Series. Suzanne Gordon, award-winning journalist and author/editor of 12 books, will be presenting a talk titled, “Nursing’s Role in Patient Safety: What Nurses Need to do to Prepare for Interprofessional Practice and Teamwork” on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. in USM’s Hannaford Hall.

Ms. Gordon’s most recent book, “First, Do Less Harm: Confronting the Inconvenient Problems of Patient Safety”, discusses the issue of patient safety from a variety of perspectives and focuses on the critical role of interprofessional and occupational practice in patient safety. Using insights from the book, she will discuss the role nurses can play in solving the communication problems that exist in medical settings.

This is the first lecture of the Martha Skoner Lecture Series which was established at USM’s School of Nursing through a generous bequest from Dr. Skoner’s estate. Dr. Skoner taught at USM from 1987-1999 and held a B.S. in nursing education, a master’s of nursing education and a Ph.D. in nursing, all from the University of Pittsburgh in her home state of Pennsylvania. The lectures will bring speakers to USM’s campus to discuss contemporary topics in nursing.

Ms. Gordon will be on hand for a reception immediately following the talk to sign books. Copies of “First: Do Less Harm” will be on sale. This event is free and open to the public.
