The Perseid Meteor shower occurs for a few days every August and will peak this year on the 13th. Edward Gleason, manager of the Southworth Planetarium, will be on hand to guide us through this event. Edward will have a telescope to look at planets, stars and other celestial objects. Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through an area of dense interplanetary debris. According to the American Meteor Society’s website, “Meteor showers are generally named after the constellation in which they appear to originate; thus the Perseids appear to originate in the constellation Perseus…”
We’ll spend the evening outside after a brief introduction in the classroom.
