The state of Maine fell from 16 to 20 in the latest release of America's Health Rankings, matching its lowest point since the rankings began in 1990. Andrew Coburn, Associate Dean of the Muskie School of Public Service and public health professor, discussed the slip with the Portland Press Herald.
In an exciting new academic/corporate partnership, twelve students from the University of Southern Maine were chosen this summer to be the first students in Maine to become part of the new Unum Scholars program. The Scholars are hired as employees at Unum, working in a specially-created team supported by mentors, and allowing them to job shadow throughout the company. The program provides students valuable work experience at a Fortune 500 company as they apply their learning towards their jobs, and gain a head start towards potential full-time employment when they graduate.
In a new partnership with AAA, USM's Tourism and Hospitality students will be the recipients of funds raised from an event held Friday, August 22, on the Holland America cruise ship MS Veendam at the Ocean Gateway terminal in Portland. AAA has committed up to $5000 towards scholarships for a new cruise ship internship program.
University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service hosted approximately 100 Maine middle and high school students participating in the iGlobal Classrooms Leadership Symposium on June 10. The students explored public policy and its global impact, with presentations they developed on topics as diverse as “Food Waste and Climate Change,” “Civil Rights,” “The Four Freedoms,” and “Hurricane Sandy Impact, Disaster Preparedness and Response Policies.” Schools participating from the surrounding communities included Portland High School, Casco Bay High School and King Middle School from Portland, Cape Elizabeth High School, Freeport Middle School and Durham Community School.
