Certificate Program in Evidence Based Practice: Learning the Fundamentals
As evidence-based practice (EBP) becomes standard for healthcare professionals, clinicians need to 1) successfully integrate the results of published research into practice, and 2) expand the knowledge base by conducting research as a regular part of clinical practice.
These two challenges constitute a major cultural shift for clinicians, one that is complex to implement but far reaching in its implications for better patient care. Nurses and other healthcare professionals are becoming more involved in and motivated to conduct EBP; and research plays a pivotal role in the development of clinical practices that are based on sound scientific evidence. For hospitals seeking Magnet Recognition, research and evidence based practice programs are increasingly important. It is the expectation in healthcare facilities today that nurses and other clinicians will conduct research, generate new knowledge and implement results in practice to advance the professions.
In evidence-based practice, clinicians need to access data from various digital sources about evidence for effective interventions and treatments, discuss the outcomes of their search with colleagues and explore ways to apply the findings in the clinical practice.
Formatted into a series of four inter-active modules, participants in this certificate program will explore the EBP process:
- Conceptualizing a clinical question
- Searching for and evaluating the evidence
- Implementing changes into clinical practice
- Monitoring the outcomes
Participants learn how to analyze clinical situations, identify strategies for improvement and take the necessary steps to make these changes.
Whether an evidence user or an evidence creator, this program provides participants with the skills necessary to think critically about their practice and apply the latest evidence to their clinical care for better patient/client outcomes.

- Debra Kramlich, MSN, RN, CCRN, is an expert clinician and educator, specializing in pediatrics and critical care. She has conducted and mentored numerous research studies. She is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses where she serves on a number of evidence-based practice work groups and review panels. She is also a manuscript reviewer for Critical Care Nurse and Journal of Nursing Management. She has several publications and has presented nationally and internationally.
- Debra Palmer, RN, MS, received her BSN from USM and her MS from Northeastern University. She has worked in research education and compliance, nursing research and staff nursing. She has conducted qualitative and quantitative research studies and is a manuscript reviewer for 3 journals including Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing. She has several publications and has presented both nationally and internationally.
