Promoting Reduced-Risk Alcohol Choices (PRAC) - USM has established a campus-community coalition with the town of Gorham to address alcohol issues that extend beyond the boundaries of the campus.

Thirsty Thursday - The Gorham Events Board provides weekly alcohol-free social programming on Thursday evenings on the Gorham campus. 

University Counseling Services (UCS) – UCS offers USM students individual counseling, support groups, and assessment and referral.  For more information, contact UCS at 780-4050.

Podcasts - A “podcast” is an audio or video recording that is digitized, archived on a website, and made “downloadable” onto MP3 players, such as an IPod.  To hear podcasts about alcohol poisoning and issues related to furnishing alcohol, click here.

PARTY Program – The PARTY Program (Promoting Alcohol Responsibility Through You) is a one hour, interactive experience to teach participants about the effects of alcohol, issues a party host may face, and how to create a lower-risk environment.  To schedule a PARTY Program for your group, please contact Lee Anne Dodge at ldodge@usm.maine.edu  To preview the information covered in the program, click here.

21st Birthday Card Program - This program is geared towards encouraging students who are turning 21 understand the liabilities of providing alcohol to underage peers. 

Interactive Presentations – Choose from a number of presentations on topics ranging from alcohol’s impact upon the brain, myths vs. facts, standard drink demonstrations, and more.  Presentations are approximately one hour, making them ideal for the classroom setting, residence hall programs, and student organization meetings.  To learn more, contact Lee Anne Dodge at ldodge@usm.maine.edu

Poster Series – This series covers a range of alcohol-related topics, such as mixing with energy drinks, alcohol poisoning, and posting pictures onto Facebook. 

Social Norms Campaign - This campaign provides accurate information about the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors regarding alcohol use among the USM students. 

Alcohol and Athletic Performance – Drinking alcohol the day before or after a workout can impede one's athletic performance.  It can also reduce sleep, deplete hormones, and overall impact your athletic goals. 

Virtual Pamphlet Collection - This comprehensive collection from the University of Chicago includes pamphlets on alcohol and other drugs, depression, eating disorders, and many other issues you may face as a college student.

Club Drugs - The use of designer drugs can have a tremendous impact upon students that extends far beyond their college years. Learn about the effects of some of the more prominent club drugs through this website.

NIAAA Site for College Students – This comprehensive site provides an interactive tour of alcohol in the body, alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and how to cut down your drinking.

Support In the Community

Alcoholics Anonymous - This is the international website for A.A., which has links to state and local hotlines and meeting lists.

Maine Central AA Office - This is the Central Service Office for Alcoholics Anonymous in Maine. Find up-to-date meeting lists for any part of the state at this site click here.

Children of Alcoholics Foundation - One in five college students nationally come from an alcoholic family - the COA Foundation provides guidance and support for such students.

Al-Anon/Alateen - This is a key resource for people who are affected by the alcohol use/abuse of others.

Mercy Hospital Recovery Center – Mercy Recovery Center provides a broad spectrum of services, including the following:

  • substance abuse evaluation
  • medical management of withdrawal
  • detoxification with the latest medications and comfort measures
  • outpatient counseling and support services - at whatever level a patient needs, all the way to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous)
  • treatment for associated medical and psychiatric complications
