GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine (USM) students will exhibit their artwork in a Student Juried Exhibition this month at the USM Art Gallery on the Gorham campus.
The exhibition, open to all USM students, will be juried by art critic Dan Kany, master printer Lisa Pixley and ceramicist Shawn O'Connor. Each juror will first review the artworks independently, and they then will collaborate to select approximately 40 pieces to feature in the exhibition. The jurors will also determine which artworks are most deserving of several cash and gift certificate awards. Their decisions will involve a range of criteria including the scope of intention and proficiency of execution.
There will be an opening reception for the exhibition, 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 20 at the USM Art Gallery. The award ceremony will be held at 6:45 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public.
“The juried exhibition is an excellent opportunity for USM students to experience the challenges of submitting their work for critical reception and preparing it for display, as well as the satisfaction of seeing it hung in a professional setting” said Carolyn Eyler, USM director of exhibitions and programming. “We are pleased to extend the call for submissions to all students, not just those who are majoring in art. This inclusive process fosters the potential many students have as creative makers.”
The exhibition is sponsored by Bruce Roullard, USM art alumnus, class of 1984, vice president of mortgage lending at Guaranteed Rate of Portland; Becky McKinnell, USM art alumna, class of 2006, president of iBec Creative of Portland; Home Instead Senior Care of Gorham; Gorham House; USM Dining Services; and Gorham House of Pizza. Gift certificate sponsors include Gorham Grind, Casco Bay Frames, Artist and Craftsman, Hunts Photo and Video, Cook’s Hardware and Photo Market.
Following the exhibition at the USM Art Gallery, selected works will be exhibited at the USM AREA Gallery on the Portland campus, April 18–May 2.
Dan Kany is a freelance writer and art historian whose art exhibition reviews are featured frequently in the Portland Press Herald. Lisa Pixley is the founder and owner of Pickwick Independent Press, a fine art printing studio in downtown Portland.
Shawn O’Connor is a ceramicist known for his specialty in wood firing and is a USM alumnus, class of 2005. He is a resident artist and adjunct faculty member at the University of North Dakota Ceramics Department. O’Connor is being hosted as a visiting artist at USM, March 3-11. In addition to jurying the student exhibition, he is engaging with students in USM Art Department courses through workshops, demonstrations, critiques and lectures, and he also is working with students to build a paper kiln.
