Ed Flaherty Named ABCA/Rawlings
Division III New England Region Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Ed Flaherty, veteran head baseball coach of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies, has been named the American Baseball
Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings 2001 New England Region Division III Coach
of the Year. The ABCA office made the announcement Tuesday (June 26).
This is the fifth time that Flaherty has received ABCA Regional Coach of
the Year honors. He was also selected in 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1997, after
leading the Huskies to the NCAA Division III World Series in each of those
seasons.
He was named the ABCA National Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1997, when he
directed the Huskies to NCAA Division III national championships.
Flaherty led the Huskies to a 37-14 overall record this season, the Little
East Conference regular season title, the program's 15th consecutive appearance
in the NCAA tournament and sixth regional championship in the last 13 seasons,
and a berth in the NCAA Division III College World Series. The 37 wins was the
third most by a USM team in a season.
The Huskies have won 30 or more games for five consecutive seasons, and
eight times during the same 13-year span (1989-2001).
Flaherty has compiled a 481-193-1 overall record in his 16 years as the
baseball head coach at USM. He also was named Little East Conference Coach of
the Year for the third time in the five-year history of baseball as a conference
sport. He also received the award in 1997 and 1999.
USM, which finished tied for fifth in the 2001 NCAA Division III College
World Series, concluded the 2001 season ranked number one in the final New
England Division III coaches poll and sixth nationally in the ABCA Division III
poll.

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore left fielder Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) 2001 Division III New England
Player of the Year. The conference office made the announcement Friday (June 1)
afternoon.
Also, senior center fielder Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) was
selected as an ECAC All-Star second team. Senior Jason Dority (Winterport,
Maine) was tabbed for honorable mention at third base.
The trio helped the Huskies to a 37-14 overall record this season, the
Little East Conference regular season title, the program's sixth NCAA regional
championship in the last 13 seasons, and a berth in the NCAA Division III
College World Series. The 37 wins is the third most in a season.
Delorme, who also was named to the ECAC all-star first team, hit .393 (83
for 211), second highest on the team. He scored 64 runs and had 66 RBI, 15
doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 23 walks, 16 stolen bases, and a .616
slugging percentage.
He led the Huskies in at bats, hits, home runs and total bases, tied for
first in games played (51), was second in batting average, runs scored and
doubles, and third in walks and stolen bases. He carries a .395 career batting
average, with 27 doubles, 18 home runs and 123 RBI.
This past season, Delorme was named a second-team All -American by the
American Baseball Coaches Association. He was named a first team all-star by
both the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association and the Little
East Conference for the second consecutive season. He also was named the 2001
Little East Conference Player of the Year.
Richardson hit a career-high .352 (69 for 196) this season, with 69 runs
scored, 27 RBI, 13 doubles, two triples, one home run, 34 walks, and 22 stolen
bases. He committed just three errors in 124 total chances on the field while
playing center field and second base.
He led the Huskies in runs scored, walks and stolen bases, tied for first
in games played (51), was second in hits, third in at bats, fourth in total
bases and fifth in doubles.
Richardson finished his four years at USM with a .328 career batting
average. He leads the program in career games played (184), is second in runs
scored (187) and walks (94), fourth in at bats (638), tied for fifth in doubles
(40), sixth in stolen bases (66), and seventh in base hits (209).
He was chosen as a first team outfielder this year by the Little East
Conference and was a second team All New England selection.
Dority hit a career-high .364 (48 for 132) this year. He scored 24 runs
with 44 RBI, nine doubles, two home runs and 20 walks. He was third in RBI,
fifth in walks, sixth in hits and ninth in doubles. He was named to the 2001
Little East Conference All-Tournament team as the designated hitter.
He concluded his four-year career with a .341 career batting average. He
played in 164 games, eighth highest in the program's history.
USM, which finished tied for fifth in the 2001 NCAA Division III College
World Series, concluded its season ranked number one in the final New England
Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll and sixth nationally in the American
Baseball Coaches Association Division III Poll.

NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament
Huskies Eliminated from NCAA DIII World Series by Marietta 3-2
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Sophomore Trey Lamb (Bay Village, Ohio) scattered
seven hits and struck out nine, and the Marietta College Pioneers scored the
winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pickoff attempt, to
defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-2, in the 2001 NCAA Division
III Baseball Championship Tournament being played at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand
Chute, Wis.
The loss eliminated the Huskies from the eight-team, double-elimination
tournament, and ended their season at 37-14. The 37 wins was the third most in
a season for the Huskies. This was USM's sixth trip to the Division Three world
series.
Marietta stays alive and will play the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on
Monday. St. Thomas and Montclair State, the two remaining unbeaten teams in the
tournament, play Sunday night's late game. Cortland State and Salisbury State
College play another elimination game prior to the St. Thomas-Montclair State
game to see which will play Montclair State. Marietta is now 46-8-1.
Lamb retired the first nine batters, including six on strikeouts, he faced
before senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) singled to lead off the
fourth. Lamb proceeded to load the bases on a double by senior Pat Toomey
(Medford, Mass.) and a walk to sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.)
with no outs, but pitched out of jam by striking out two and getting the final
out on a ground ball back to the mound. The only other inning he was in trouble
was the seventh when the Huskies nicked him for a pair of runs to tie the game.
In the eighth inning, the Pioneers put runners at the corners with one out
when freshman Andy Coble (Athens, Ohio) doubled and moved to third on junior
Dusty Childress' (Lima, Ohio) single. The Huskies brought on junior right-
handed pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine), the starter in Friday's game, to
face senior Mike Menke (Hamilton, Ohio), but Adams pickoff throw to first was
wide of the bag for a two-base error, allowing Coble to score and Childress to
go to third. Adams pitched out of further trouble to keep it at a one-run
margin.
The Huskies made things interesting in the ninth when freshman Brian
Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) walked with one out. Senior Jason Dority (Winterport,
Maine) drove a Lamb pitch to the warning track in right field where it was
caught for the second out. The next batter flied out to end the game and the
Huskies season.
Marietta took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Derek
Pauley (Denver, Colo.) delivered a pair of runs with a one-out double into the
left center field gap that scored seniors Mike Deegan (Washington, Pa.) and Todd
Timmer (Hamilton, Ohio). Deegan and Timmer led off the inning with singles and
moved up on a sacrifice bunt by junior Todd Yoder (Middlefield, Ohio).
Southern Maine tied the game in the seventh when sophomore Andy Lang (New
Bedford, Mass.) led off with a single and freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers,
Mass.) followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Dority
brought in Lang with a groundout, and junior Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.)
drove in Marshall with a double to deep right field.
Both teams squandered scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded.
Southern Maine loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but failed to push
across a run. Marietta loaded the sacks with two outs in the sixth, but junior
Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine), the second USM pitcher of the game, got out of
the jam with a fly out.
Coble, the number nine hitter, led the Pioneers' 12-hit attack with three
hits. Childress, Deegan and Pauley each had two hits. Richardson was the
Huskies only repeat hitter.
Junior Erik Carlson (Portland, Maine), the third of four USM hurlers, was
saddled with his second loss in the tournament.
The Huskies are scheduled to fly back into Portland on Monday morning at
11:06 a.m.

USM's Delorme, Toomey Named ABCA All-Americans
APPLETON, Wis. -- Sophomore outfielder Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) and senior shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies baseball team have been named to the 2001 American
Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-America
second and third teams, respectively. The All-America teams were announced
Thursday (May 24) evening at a banquet prior to the start of the NCAA Division
III Baseball Championship in Grand Chute, Wisconsin.
This is the second straight year that Delorme has been named to the All-
America team. He was named to the third team last year. It is the first time
that Toomey has been named an All-American during his stellar four-year career.
Through the first two games of the NCAA championship, Delorme was batting
.394 (82 for 208) with 64 runs scored, 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 66 RBI and 16
stolen bases. He previously had been named the Little East Conference Player of
the Year and a first team all-star, and the NCAA Division III All-New England
first team.
Toomey, who missed two weeks in late April with a rib injury, is hitting a
team-leading .428 (65 for 152) with 50 runs scored, 13 doubles, six home runs,
38 RBI and 17 stolen bases. He was named to the Little East Conference second
team and All-New England first team. He set a career mark for stolen bases
during the NCAA regional tournament, and against Illinois Wesleyan University on
Saturday (May 26), he slammed a home run in the seventh inning to establish a
new career record for most hits (254), breaking the old mark of 253 set by Bob
Prince (1989-92).
Southern Maine, 37-13 on the season, will play Marietta College in an
elimination game Sunday, starting at noon. The Huskies lost their opening game
in the eight-team, double-elimination national championship finals to SUNY-
Cortland, 10-5, on Friday, then disposed of Illinois Wesleyan University, 12-2,
in an elimination game on Saturday.

NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament
USM Still Alive as Russell Hurls Huskies Past Titans, 12-2
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Senior right-handed pitcher Mark Russell
(Arlington, Mass.) hurled eight shutout innings along the way to a complete game
effort and the University of Southern Maine bats came alive, pounding out 15
hits, as the Huskies defeated the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans, 12-2, to
eliminated the Titans from the 2001 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship
Tournament being played at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.
The Huskies remain alive in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament
and will play the loser of the Montclair State University-Marietta College game
at noon on Sunday in another elimination game. The Huskies are now 37-13 on the
season. Illinois Wesleyan, making its first appearance in the championship
series, finished the season 37-15-1.
Russell was masterful despite pitching with a strained muscle in his side.
He allowed only four hits over the first eight innings before the Titans reached
him in the ninth for three hits and a walk to score two runs to avert being shut
out. Russell walked four and struck out seven in his fourth complete game
outing of the season. The win was the 21st of his career, moving him into a tie
with John McCartney (1986-89) for fourth place on the all-time wins list.
Southern Maine took advantage of five IWU errors in the game to score
seven unearned runs. The Huskies got single unearned runs in the first and
fifth innings, and five unearned runs in the sixth to blow the game open. Nine
of the Huskies' 12 runs came after two were out in the inning.
The Huskies bats came alive as eight of the nine starters collected at
least one hit. Freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) led the hit parade,
banging out three singles. Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) had only one hit,
but it was his sixth homer of the season and the 254th hit of his four-year
career, setting a school record. Toomey surpassed the previous record of 253
hits set by Bob Prince (1989-92).
Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) had two hits, including his
seventh round tripper of the season. Sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.),
senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) and junior Peter L'Italien (Salem,
Mass.) each had a pair of hits.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Shaun Richardson
(Kennebunk, Maine) beat out an infield hit and took second on a throwing error.
He would score when Toomey's fly ball was dropped in the outfield for a two-base
error.
Marshall singled to lead off the second, stole second and came home when
Dority doubled down the left field line.
With two outs in the third, the Huskies scored three times to make it 5-0.
Curcuru walked and Lang doubled him in. Marshall beat out an infield hit to put
runners at the corners. Dority's single plated Lang, and Marshall scored on a
throwing error on a potential double steal attempt.
Lang walked, stole second and came in on a two-base infield throwing error
in the fifth for another unearned run.
With two outs in the sixth, Toomey reached base when the throw to first
base was dropped. After Toomey stole second, sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg
Falls, Vt.) doubled him in. Curcuru followed with his opposite field homer.
L'Italien closed out the five-run rally with a two-run, bases loaded single.
Toomey closed out the USM scoring in the seventh with his record-breaking
hit.
Illinois Wesleyan, in the losers bracket after dropping a 7-0 decision to
the University of St. Thomas on Friday, got its only two runs of the tournament
on sophomore Jeremy Hunt's (Champaign, Ill.) bases loaded groundout and an RBI
single by senior Haneef Omar (Rockford, Ill.). Sophomore Steve Schilsky
(Springfield, Ill.), the first of five IWU hurlers, took the loss.

NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament
Red Dragons Rally to Defeat Huskies 10-5
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Sophomore Cory Haggerty (Ilion, N.Y.) tripled home
two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to ignite a five-run rally as the
SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 10-
5, in the first round of the eight-team, double-elimination 2001 NCAA Division
III Baseball Championship Tournament at Fox Cities Stadium.
The loss drops the Huskies into the losers bracket where they will play
Illinois Wesleyan University in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at 1:15
p.m. Southern Maine drops to 36-13 on the season. Cortland, 34-9 on the
season, moves into the winners bracket against the University of St. Thomas
(Minn.).
In earlier games Friday, defending champion Montclair State University
defeated Chapman University, 5-1; Marietta College downed Salisbury State
University, 1-0; and St. Thomas blanked Illinois Wesleyan, 7-0.
Saturday, Chapman will play Salisbury State at 10 a.m. in an elimination
game. In the winners bracket games, Montclair plays Marietta at 4:30 followed
by Cortland State taking on St. Thomas at 7:45.
The Red Dragons sent nine men to the plate in the eighth against three USM
hurlers. With runners at first and second with one out, Haggerty hit the second
pitch from freshman lefty reliever Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) deep into
the right-center field gap. After a walk to freshman Pat D'Auria (Upper Nyack,
N.Y.), senior Larry Williams (New Hartford, N.Y.) singled home Haggerty. Senior
Matt Christiana (Syracuse, N.Y.) singled in the fourth run, and junior Brian
Huber (Blue Point, N.Y.) plated the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against USM starter Ryan
Adams Sanford, Maine) on an RBI double by freshman Brendan Chiavaro (New
Windsor, N.Y.).
Southern Maine tied the game in the fourth when sophomore Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.) doubled with two outs and came home on a single by senior
Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine).
The Red Dragons regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on
sophomore Ben Albright's (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) RBI single.
Delorme needed one swing in the sixth to put USM in the lead, blasting his
10th homer of the season over the left field fence after seniors Shaun
Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) and Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) had singled to
open the inning.
The Huskies made it 5-2 in the seventh when freshman Brian Marshall
(Danvers, mass.) led off with a double, and, with two outs, Richardson singled
him home.
Huber capped a three-run Red Dragons' rally that tied the score at 5-5
with a two-out, two-run single.
Cortland junior right-hander Mike Howell (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up his
11th straight win to improve to 11-1 on the season. He retired the first 11
batters he faced until Delorme doubled to left center in the fourth. Howell
allowed just eight hits and one walk while striking out eight. Howell's 11
wins sets a school single-season record.
Delorme was the lone bright spot for the Huskies, going to 3 for 4.
Junior Erik Carlson (Portland, Maine), the third of five USM pitchers, was
tagged with his second loss of the season.

Southern Maine Beats Eastern Connecticut, 11-7, to Win Regional Title
HARWICH, Mass. -- Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) and sophomore Andy
Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) keyed a 17-hit attack with four hits apiece as the
University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors, 11-7, to come all the way back through the losers bracket
to win the NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament Sunday
afternoon at Whitehouse Field.
The regional title is the sixth for Southern Maine since 1989, and earned
the Huskies a spot in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament
that begin Friday (May 25) in Appleton, Wis. USM is the first team to win the
New England regional tournament after losing its opening game (10-3 to Wheaton)
since Eastern Connecticut turned the trick in 1987.
Sophomore pitcher Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine), the hero of the Huskies'
6-3 win over Williams College that put USM into the title game, came on to pitch
3 2/3 innings on one-run relief to earn a save and was named the tournament's
most outstanding player.
Getting a second crack at the Warriors, who beat the Huskies twice eight
days (Saturday, May 12) ago in Gorham to win the Little East Conference title,
the Huskies jumped on freshman starter Joe Serfass (Newington, Conn.) for four
runs in the first inning. Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) brought
in the first run with a single. Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) made it
2-0 with a sacrifice fly, and junior DH Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) drove in
two more with an opposite field double.
In the second inning against EC sophomore Matt Fortin (Tolland, Conn.) who
came on in relief, Toomey made it 5-0 with his fifth home run of the season.
Delorme, the next batter up, was hit by a pitch, stole second and came in on
Curcuru's RBI single to center, making it 6-0.
The Warriors got back into the game in the bottom half of the second,
scoring four times against three Husky hurlers. Sophomore catcher Jeff Funaro
(Milford, Conn.) drove in the first run with a fielder's choice. Freshman
Eugene Julien (Brockton, Mass.) knocked in another with a bases loaded single to
center. Senior Nick Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) followed with another RBI
single, and junior John Kubachka (Glastonbury, Conn.) brought in the fourth run
of the inning with a groundout.
Southern Maine got one back in the third as junior Peter L'Italien (Salem,
Mass.) doubled with two outs and scored on freshman Adam Lemieux's (Cumberland,
Maine) RBI single.
Lang's leadoff double appeared to be wasted in the fifth, but a two-out,
infield error on Lemieux's ground ball kept the inning alive. Senior Shaun
Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) singled in Lang, and Toomey followed with a double
to right field to score Lemieux and Richardson.
Eastern Connecticut got a single run in the fifth on freshman Dwight
Wildman's (Seymour, Conn.) groundout, and in the sixth when Funaro scored on a
wild pitch to make it 10-6.
The teams traded single runs in the ninth. USM scored on L'Italien's
sacrifice fly. EC scored on pinch-hitter Nick Scheets' (Milford, Conn.) RBI
single. The game ended as Liddy got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam, getting
Tempesta to bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Curcuru and Lemieux also had two hits for the Huskies. Kubachka led the
Warriors 14-hit offense with three hits.
Sophomore Erik Carlson (Portland, Maine), the third of five USM pitchers,
picked up the victory, working 3 2/3 innings. Serfass was tagged with his
second loss of the season, both coming at the hands of the Huskies.
Named to the all-tournament team from Southern Maine were Liddy, Lang,
Toomey and Lemieux.

NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament
Huskies Beat Williams, Advance to Championship Game
HARWICH, Mass. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Pat Liddy (Farmington,
Maine) scattered nine hits in the second complete-game performance of his career
and the University of Southern Maine Huskies turned a tournament record-tying
five double plays to defeat the Williams College Ephs, 6-3, in the first game of
the championship round of 2001 NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball
Tournament Sunday afternoon at Whitehouse Field.
The win moves the Huskies, 35-12 overall, into the title game against
Little East Conference arch-rival and top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State
University, starting at 3:45 p.m.. The winner of that game will advance to next
week's NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Appleton, Wis.
Williams finished the season 33-5.
Liddy, who missed all of the 2000 season with an arm injury, pitched his
first complete game since April, 1999, to put the Huskies into the title game.
He gave up eight singles and a solo home run to freshman Jabe Bergeron (Keene,
N.H.) leading off the fourth inning, one walk, hit three batters and struck out
seven. He had the benefit of double plays in the first, third, fifth, sixth and
seventh innings. It was his fourth win of the season.
Southern Maine scored three times in the sixth inning against Williams'
ace Joe Steinberg, who had come on in relief of starter Benjamin Hamm (Java
Center, N.Y.), to break a 3-3 tie. Sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.)
broke the tie with an RBI single that drove in senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester,
Mass.) who had walked to lead off the inning. After junior Craig Gureckis
(Nashua, N.H.) walked with one out, Lang was caught trying to steal third.
Junior Peter L'Italien (Salem, N.H.) doubled to right center to plate Gureckis,
giving USM a 5-3 advantage. Freshman Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) with a
single to center to drive in L'Italien.
Williams took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Phil Michael (New York,
N.Y.) scored as the Huskies turned their first double play of the day.
Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) put the Huskies ahead in the
bottom half of the inning with a two-run single.
Bergeron's seventh homer of the season tied the game, and the Ephs took a
3-2 lead in the fourth when Michael Shipley (Discovery Bay, Calif.) scored on a
groundout.
USM tied the game in the fifth on Delorme's RBI single that chased home
senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.). Toomey walked with two outs and stole
second before Delorme's base hit. The stolen base was the 84th of Toomey's
career. His first stolen base of the game in the third inning established a new
school record, breaking the mark of 82 steals set by Cory Adams (1997-99).
Only three Williams hitters were able to solve Liddy. Junior William
Casolo (Stamford, Conn.) had four singles, Bergeron had three hits and Shipley
had a pair of singles. Delorme paced the Huskies' 13-hit attack with three hits
while Toomey, Lang and Lemieux each had two.
The Huskies are looking to become the first team since Eastern Connecticut
in 1987 to win the regional after losing its opening round game.

Southern Maine Scores Five in the 8th to Eliminate Bridgewater State, 12-10
HARWICH, Mass. -- Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) and freshman
Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) delivered back-to-back, two-run doubles in the
bottom of the eighth inning as the University of Southern Maine Huskies scored
five times to rally past the Bridgewater State College Bears, 12-10, in the
third round of the six-team, double-elimination NCAA Division III New England
Regional Baseball Tournament at Whitehouse Field Saturday afternoon.
The victory moves the Huskies, now 34-12, into Sunday's championship round
needing two wins against an opponent(s) to be determined, pending the outcome of
Saturday night's game between Eastern Connecticut State University and Williams
College. The loss eliminated the Bears from the tournament. Bridgewater State
finished the season 28-10-2.
Trailing 8-5, the Huskies picked up two unearned runs in the seventh
inning, taking advantage of two Bears' miscues and a wild pitch to pull back
within one.
Bridgewater State made it 9-7 in the eighth on junior Michael Foster's
(Whitman, Mass.) RBI single before the roof caved in on the Bears.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of
fielder's choices and a single to set the table for Curcuru and Marshall.
Curcuru doubled down the left field line to drive in senior Pat Toomey (Medford,
Mass.) and Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) to tie game at 9-9. Marshall
also slammed his double to left, scoring sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg
Falls, Vt.) and Curcuru, to give USM the lead for good. Marshall would advance
to third on a wild pitch and score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Andy Lang
(New Bedford, Mass.).
Bridgewater State made things interesting in the ninth, scoring once on
senior Bryan Holtzman's (Canton, Mass.) RBI single off USM junior right-hander
Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine). Adams, the Huskies fifth pitcher of the game,
ended the rally by getting sophomore Paul Hasenfus (Norfolk, Mass.) to ground
into a 6-4-3, game-ending double play.
The Bears took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning on a grand slam homer by
senior DH Jason Estano (Weymouth, Mass.). USM responded in the bottom half of
the inning with four runs of its own on an error, an RBI single by junior Peter
L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) and a two-run homer by freshman Adam Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine).
Foster's RBI fielder's choice in the fifth tied the game at 5-5, and the
Bears scored three in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Freshman Jason Arraiol
(Taunton, Mass.) doubled home two runs and senior Tony Demeo (Carver, Mass.)
brought home the third with a single.
Adams, who worked eight innings in the Huskies opening-game loss to
Wheaton, picked up the win. He worked the final 3 2/3 innings to pick up his
fourth win of the season. Junior Bobby Haskins (Brockton, Mass.), the last of
three Bridgewater State hurlers, took the loss.
The Bears outhit the Huskies 17-11 in the game, but also committed four
costly errors that resulted in four unearned runs for USM. Arraiol, Estano and
senior Peter Buffington (Taunton, Mass.) paced the Bears attack with three hits
apiece. Toomey, Delorme and Curcuru were the only repeat hitters for USM.

Huskies Survive to Beat Salve Regina, 5-3
Dority Drives in Three; Russell Picks Up 20th Career Win
HARWICH, Mass. -- Senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) had a pair of
hits and drove in three runs with a fourth-inning, bases-loaded double to lift
the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-3 victory over the Salve Regina
University Seahawks in the second round of the six-team, double-elimination NCAA
Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon at
Whitehouse Field.
Senior right-handed pitcher Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) and junior
right-hander Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine) combined to allow nine hits and
two walks while striking out 10. Russell went the first 5.1 innings to pick up
his 20th career win. He is the sixth pitcher in the history of the USM baseball
program to reach 20 career wins. Pelletier went the final 3.2 innings to pick
up his fourth save of the season.
With the victory, the Huskies move into the third round of the tournament
on Saturday against an opponent to be determined. The win snapped a three-game
losing streak and improved the Huskies overall record to 33-12. Salve Regina,
champion of the Commonwealth Coast Conference playing in its first NCAA
tournament, ended its season 21-13.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Dority, batting lead-
off for the first time this season, singled to right, advanced to second on a
fielder's choice, moved up to third on an error and scored on the first of two
doubles by senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.).
Dority made it 4-0 in the fourth, clearing the bases with his two-out
double to center field. Freshmen Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and Adam
Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) and junior Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) all
scored.
Marshall singled home sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.), who had
doubled, with one out in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Russell cruised through the first five innings, allowing just three hits
and striking out eight before running into trouble in the sixth. The Seahawks
got their first two runs on freshman Damian Costantino's (Warwick, R.I.) bases-
loaded single, and a third on an RBI single by senior Jay Brule (Pawtucket,
R.I.). After Russell uncorked a wild pitch to put runners at second and third,
Pelletier got call.
Pelletier made things interesting, hitting the first batter he faced to
load the bases. He then induced sophomore Brad Freitas (Middletown, R.I.) to hit
into an inning ending 4-6-3 double play.
Dority, Curcuru and Marshall each had a pair of hits for the Huskies.
Costantino had three singles, and senior Jeff Wright (Wickford, R.I.) had two
for the Seahawks.
Senior starter Louis Gianfrancesco (Providence, R.I.) took the loss for
Salve Regina.

Lyons Down Huskies, 10-3
HARWICH, Mass. -- If the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball
team wants to earn its sixth trip to the NCAA Division III World Series, they
are going to have to take the long road back through losers bracket to do it
after dropping a 10-3 decision to the Wheaton College Lyons in a first round
game of the six-team, double-elimination NCAA New England Regional Baseball
Tournament Thursday afternoon at Whitehouse Field.
Southern Maine, now 32-12 and the second seed in the tournament, will look
to take the first step back Friday afternoon when it plays sixth-seeded Salve
Regina University at 12:00 p.m. Salve Regina dropped into the losers bracket
after losing 14-3 to top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in the
opening game of the tournament Thursday. Wheaton awaits the winner of
Thursday's late game between Williams College and Bridgewater State College.
The Huskies, making their 15th consecutive appearance in the tournament,
spotted the Lyons a 4-0 before coming to plate, then clawed back within one
(4-3) after eight innings before the wheels came off in the ninth inning.
In the first inning, junior outfielder Chris Denorfia (Southington, Conn.)
drove in the Lyons' first two runs with a one-out, bases-loaded double. Senior
DH Alan Beausoleil (Danielson, Conn.) followed with another two-run double put
the Huskies down four.
USM began pecking away at the lead on sophomore Andy Lang's (New Bedford,
Mass.) solo home run in the fourth. Lang drove in his second run of the game
with a double in the sixth to make it 4-2.
Wheaton junior starting pitcher Andrew Muller (Bridgewater, Mass.), who
scattered 10 hits over seven innings, finally tired in the eighth and was lifted
after giving up a leadoff single and a walk. The Huskies loaded the bases
against senior reliever Nick Donofrio (Cranston, R.I.) on an error. Freshman
Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) delivered one run with a one-out single, but
Donofrio and junior closer Mike Spavento (Milton, Mass.) got the next two
batters to escape.
The usually reliable USM bullpen was unable to keep the game close,
allowing six runs in the top of the ninth. Beausoleil picked up his third RBI
of the game, walking with the bases loaded. Another run scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Phil Desilets (West Newbury, Mass.) plated two with a bases loaded
single, and sophomore Jeff Ambrosini (New Ipswich, N.H.) followed with a two-run
double.
Lemieux and Lang each had three hits, and seniors Jody Curcuru
(Gloucester, Mass.) and Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) had two hits apiece for
the Huskies. Denorfia, Desilets, Ambrosini and sophomore Scott Beattie
(Springvale, Maine) all had a pair of hits for Wheaton.
Muller picked up the win to run his record to 7-0 on the season. Spavento
picked up his 11th save, retiring all four batters he faced. USM junior Ryan
Adams (Sanford, Maine) settled down after the shaky first inning to give up
seven hits and five walks while fanning two over eight innings. His record
drops to 3-1.

USM's Tyler Delorme Named LEC Player of the Year
Huskies Put Nine on All-LEC Teams; Flaherty Named Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore outfielder Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine baseball team has been named Little
East Conference Player of the Year for the 2001 season, following a vote by the
conference's eight head coaches. William M. Moore, commissioner of the Little
East Conference, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
In addition, Moore announced that veteran USM head coach Ed Flaherty had
been selected by his peers as the Coach of the Year for the third time in the
five-year history of baseball as a conference sport. USM also had nine players
named to the all-conference first or second team.
Delorme is the third USM player to win Player of the Year honors in the
LEC, following Tony Miner (1997) and Mike McCullum (1999). The slugging
outfielder helped the Huskies win their first outright LEC regular season title
this spring with a 13-1 mark, and gain a berth in the NCAA regional tournament
for the 15th straight season. USM, 32-11 overall, begins play in the NCAA
regional tournament on Thursday (May 17).
Flaherty, who takes a 477-194-1 career record into the region tournament,
was previously named the LEC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999. He has led the
Huskies to a share of the LEC regular season title in the previous two years
before leading them to the undisputed title this spring. He also guided the
team to tournament championships in 1997 and 1999.
Named to the All-LEC first team from USM were junior catcher Peter
L'Italien (Salem, Mass.), senior third baseman Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine),
senior outfielder Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) and Delorme. This is the
second straight year that Delorme has been named to the first team.
Selected to the second team were senior first baseman Jody Curcuru
(Gloucester, Mass.), sophomore second baseman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.),
senior shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.), senior starting pitcher Mark
Russell (Arlington, Mass.) and junior relief pitcher Alden Pelletier (Sanford,
Maine).
Heading into the regional tournament, Delorme is batting .407 (72 for 177)
with 58 runs scored, 13 doubles, nine home runs and 58 RBI. He also has stolen
14 bases.
L'Italien, the LEC Rookie of the Year and a second team all-star in 1999,
makes his initial appearance on the All-LEC first team. He is batting .268 (26
for 97) with 25 runs scored and eight RBI. He also has thrown out 45 percent (9
of 20) of potential base stealers.
Dority, named to the all-tournament team last weekend, is hitting .360 (41
for 114) with 23 runs scored and 37 RBI. This is the first time that he has
made the all-conference team.
Richardson also is making his first appearance on the all-conference team.
The 1999 tournament most outstanding player and three-time all-tournament
selection, Richardson is batting .383 (62 for 161) with a team-high 61 runs
scored, 13 doubles, two triples, one homer, 25 RBI and a team-leading 19 stolen
bases.
Toomey, a four-time second team pick, is hitting a team-high .455 (55 for
121) with 42 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples, four round trippers, 34 RBI
and 13 stolen bases despite missing 11 games with an injury. He tied the career
stolen base record (82) during the LEC tournament.
Lang, last year's Rookie of the Year, is on the all-LEC squad for the
second straight year. A first team pick in 2000, Lang is hitting .364 (40 for
110) with 35 runs scored, seven doubles, three homers and 35 RBI.
This is the first time that Curcuru has been selected for the all-LEC
team. The smooth fielding first baseman is hitting .307 (51 for 166) with 43
runs scored, 12 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 53 RBI.
Russell is making his second straight appearance on the all-LEC second
team. The senior right-hander is 5-1 overall with a 3.88 ERA. He has worked a
team-leading 62.2 innings, allowing 72 hits, 27 earned runs and 19 walks while
striking out 45.
Pelletier, a converted infielder, has been a workhorse out of the bullpen
again this season, making a staff-high 19 appearances. He has compiled a 4-3
record with three saves and a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings of work.
Southern Maine, the second seed for the upcoming NCAA regional tournament,
takes on fifth-seeded Wheaton College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the first
round of the six-team, double-elimination tournament. The winner of the
regional earns a spot in the NCAA national championship tournament being played
in Appleton, Wisconsin.

USM Huskies Receive NCAA At-Large Bid
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine baseball team has
received an at-large bid into the 42-team field for the 2001 NCAA Division III
Baseball National Championship Tournament that begins this Thursday (May 17)
with regional tournament play. The six-team, double-elimination New England
Regional Tournament to be played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
This will be the 15th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament for
head coach Ed Flaherty's team. The Huskies finished the 2001 regular season
32-11 and were runner-ups in last weekend's Little East Conference Tournament.
USM received one of the five at-large berths into this year's tournament.
Top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University (35-11) opens the
tournament Thursday against sixth-seeded Salve Regina University (20-11). The
second game on Thursday will have the second-seeded Huskies (32-11) playing
fifth-seeded Wheaton College (32-9). Third-seeded Williams College (31-3) will
take on fourth-seeded Bridgewater State College (28-8-2) in the third game.

Little East Conference Tournament
Eastern Connecticut Sweeps Southern Maine to Win Little East Title
GORHAM, Maine -- The second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State Warriors
rode the complete-game pitching efforts of sophomore Matt Fortin (Tolland,
Conn.) and senior Brian Gouin (Sprague, Conn.) to sweep the University of
Southern Maine Huskies, 7-4 and 9-1, to win the Little East Conference Baseball
Championship Tournament at Towers Field Saturday afternoon.
By winning the conference championship, the Warriors, 35-11 overall,
secured an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III regional tournament that
begins Thursday. The LEC title is Eastern Connecticut's second in the five-year
history of the tournament.
Southern Maine, which dipped to 32-11 with the two losses, awaits a
possible at-large berth in the NCAA tournament field that will be announced
sometime Monday morning.
In the must-win first game, Fortin scattered seven hits and walked two
while striking out nine. In the championship game, Gouin, who was making his
first collegiate start after 23 relief appearances, allowed just six hits and
two walks while fanning four. He came back after hurling 3.2 innings on Friday
in the Warriors 6-3 loss to Southern Maine. Eastern Connecticut got three
straight complete game wins after the loss to Southern Maine.
Eastern Connecticut jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings of
the opener as the Huskies usually reliable defense surrendered three unearned
runs. John Kubachka (Glastonbury, Conn.) and John Hedde (Stonington, Conn.)
drove in runs in the first inning, and Dwight Wildman (Seymour, Conn.) scored on
a passed ball.
After USM struck back in the fourth for a single run on Andy Lang's (New
Bedford, Mass.) RBI single, the Warriors got their first earned run on Ricky
Fritsch's (Meriden, Conn.) RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
Southern Maine got a single run in the fifth on Pat Toomey's (Medford,
Mass.) sacrifice fly, but the Warriors struck back in the bottom half of the
inning for two runs on Kubachka's RBI single and pinch hitter Matt Hebert's
(Burlington, Conn.) sacrifice fly that made it 6-2.
Kubachka, Hedde, Fritsch and Nick Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.), who hit a
solo homer in the seventh, each had a pair of hits for the Warriors. Lang and
Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) were the only repeat hitters for the Huskies.
USM senior starting pitcher Todd Southwick (Nashua, N.H.) took the loss despite
allowing only one earned run before being lifted.
In the championship game, Gouin was locked up in a scoreless pitchers duel
with sophomore reliever Erik Carlson (Portland, Maine) until the Warriors struck
three times in the sixth inning. Hedde's two-out double plated two runs, and
Wildman brought in the third with a single.
The Huskies got one back in the seventh on Adam Lemieux's (Cumberland,
Maine) RBI double down the left field line.
Any hopes of a Husky comeback were dashed in the bottom half of the
seventh when the Warriors pushed four runs across. Eastern Connecticut added a
pair of insurance runs in the eighth for the 9-1 final.
Wildman paced the Warriors' 16-hit attack with four hits. Tempesta had
three hits, and Kubachka and Eugene Julien (Brockton, Mass.) each had a pair.
Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) was the Huskies' lone repeat hitter.
Carlson, the second of six USM hurlers, took the loss.

Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament
Huskies Advance to Little East Tournament Championship Round
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) scattered six
singles over 7.2 innings to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to
defeat the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, 6-3, Friday morning in
the second round of the Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament
being played at USM's Towers Field.
The win puts the Huskies into Saturday's championship round against
Eastern Connecticut State University. USM needs to win one game Saturday to
clinch its third Little East title in the five-year history of the tournament
and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament that starts next Thursday in
Harwich, Mass.
Eastern Connecticut earned a spot in the championship round by defeating
the Plymouth State College Panthers, 16-1, in the third game Friday afternoon,
eliminating the Panthers. Plymouth State earlier had eliminated the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 11-3, in the second game of the day. ECSU needs to
beat Southern Maine twice on Saturday to win the title.
Adams picked up his third win of the season, allowing single runs in the
second, fifth and eighth innings before giving way to junior Alden Pelletier
(Sanford, Maine) with two on and two out. Pelletier got out of the jam, and
stranded two runners in the ninth to pick up his third saves. Adams walked
three and struck out three.
Eastern Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the second on freshman Dwight
Wildman's (Seymour, Conn.) RBI single. Southern Maine came back with two runs
in the bottom half of the inning on a double by freshman Adam Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine) and an infield error.
The Warriors tied the game in the fifth when junior John Kubachka
(Glastonbury, Conn.) walked with the bases loaded.
The Huskies took the lead for good when senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester,
Mass.) singled with the bases loaded to chase home a pair of runs.
USM picked up an unearned run in the sixth as senior Shaun Richardson
(Kennebunk, Maine) doubled, advances to third on a wild pitch and scored on an
infield error.
Junior pinch hitter Justin Waz (Deep River, Conn.) singled in a run for
the Warriors in the eighth to chase Adams from the game, but the Warriors were
unable to do any further damage.
The Huskies restored their three-run lead when Richardson singled with two
outs and came in on senior Pat Toomey's (Medford, Mass.) double.
Richardson and sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg, Vt.) each had a pair of
hits for USM.
Freshman left-hander Ty Bongiovanni (Meriden, Conn.) worked the first 4.1
innings for the Warriors to take the loss.

Little East Conference Tournament
Huskies Strike Early, Defeat Panthers 7-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior designated hitter Jason Dority (Winterport,
Maine) had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to help the University of
Southern Maine Huskies defeat the Plymouth State College Panthers, 7-3, in the
first day of the double-elimination Little East Conference Baseball Championship
Tournament Thursday afternoon at USM's Towers Field.
The win moves the top-seeded Huskies into Friday morning's winners bracket
game against second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, starting at
9:30 a.m. Eastern Connecticut earned its spot in the winners bracket game by
beating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-3, in the first game of the
day.
Plymouth State will look to stave off elimination when it plays UMass
Dartmouth at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the PSC-UMD game will then play the loser
of the USM-ECSU game at 3:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
The Huskies struck early, scoring four times in the first inning. With
runners at the corners and two out, freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) hit
the first pitch he saw into left field to deliver senior Pat Toomey (Medford,
Mass.) with the game's initial run. The first of three walks to sophomore Andy
Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) loaded the bases, and Dority cleared the sacks with
the first of his two doubles to make it 4-0.
Plymouth State pulled to within one with a three-run rally in the third
inning. Senior Dakota Smith (Rochester, N.H.) brought in the first run with a
double, and sophomore Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) drove in two more with another
double. USM senior right-hander Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) slammed the
door on any further scoring, striking out the next two batters.
Dority ignited a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom half of the third
when his second double putting runners at second and third. A costly infield
throwing error on junior Peter L'Italien's (Salem, Mass.) groundball allowed
both runners to score.
USM added an insurance run in the sixth on senior Shaun Richardson's
(Kennebunk, Maine) RBI double.
Russell worked into the seventh inning, allowing seven hits and two walks
while striking out four to pick up his fifth win of the season. Three USM
relievers did not allow a base runner.
Junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.) hurled the first six innings for the
Panthers, surrendering seven hits and five walks. He struck out three. Senior
Arlan Freeman (Portland, Maine) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Marshall finished the day with three hits, and Richardson had two for the
Huskies. Price was the lone repeat hitter for the Panthers.
Southern Maine improved its overall record to 31-9. Plymouth State dipped
to 16-20.

Mark Russell Named LEC Pitcher of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior right-handed pitcher Mark Russell (Arlington,
Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been
selected as the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April
30-May 6. The announcement was made by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Russell hurled a complete-game shutout in the first game of the Huskies
Little East Conference doubleheader at Keene State College on Saturday, allowing
five hits and one walk while striking out four. Four USM hurlers came back in
the nightcap to blank the Owls and clinch the LEC regular season title for the
Huskies.
With his first career shutout, Russell improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA
to 3.58. In 55.1 innings, Russell has allowed 61 hits and 17 walks while
striking out 40.
For his career, Russell is 18-8 with a 4.67 ERA. His 18 wins puts him in
a tie for seventh place with Jason Jensen (1995-1997) on the Huskies all-time
list.
Southern Maine (30-9; 13-1), which earned a first round bye by winning the
regular season title, will host the four-team, double-elimination Little East
Conference tournament, starting Thursday at the Gorham campus. Eastern
Connecticut (31-10, 12-2) is the second seed and also received a bye.
The tournament begins with a pair of first round games Tuesday. Third-
seeded UMass Dartmouth (22-14, 8-6), the defending tournament champion, will
host sixth-seeded UMass Boston (14-23, 5-9), and Keene State (13-13, 8-6), the
fourth seed, will take on fifth-seeded Plymouth State College (15-19, 5-9).

Russell, Adams Pitch Huskies to Sweep of Owls
Southern Maine to Host Little East Conference Tournament
KEENE, N.H. -- Senior Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) hurled a complete
game shutout in the opener and junior Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) and three
relievers combined for another shutout in the nightcap to lead the nationally
ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a doubleheader sweep of the Keene
State College Owls, 4-0 and 15-0, in Little East Conference college baseball
action Saturday afternoon at Owls Stadium.
The Huskies, who have won six of their last seven and 14 of their last 16
games, improved to 30-9 on the season and clinched first place in the Little
East Conference at 13-1. This is the fifth consecutive season, and eighth time
since 1989, that Southern Maine has won at least 30 games. The Owls dipped to
13-13 overall and 8-6 in LEC play.
Southern Maine will host the four-team, double-elimination Little East
Conference championship tournament for the second consecutive year, and the
third time in the last five years. The tournament begins Thursday (May 10) and
runs through Saturday (May 12). USM will play at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday against
the winner of Tuesday's single-elimination, first-round game between fourth-
seeded Keene State and number five seed Plymouth State..
Russell allowed just five singles in the opener to record his first career
shutout and improve his record to 4-1. He now has 18 career victories, tying
him with Jason Jensen (1995-97) for seventh all-time in school history. He
struck out four and walked just one. Owls' senior Matt Lavatori (Manchester,
Conn.) went the distance in defeat, allowing nine hits, with four strikeouts and
two walks.
Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) put the Huskies on the board with
an RBI ground ball in the first inning. Freshman Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine)
smacked a run-scoring double for an insurance run in the fourth. USM scored its
final two runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by freshman Brian
Marshall (Danvers, Mass.).
Adams pitched six innings of two-hit, scoreless baseball in the nightcap
to earn his second victory of the season. He had two strikeouts and three
walks. Three other Huskies' pitchers each worked one inning to finish the
combined shutout.
Southern Maine pounded out nineteen hits in the second game. Sophomore
Andy Lang's (New Bedford, Mass.) three-run homer, his third of the season, keyed
a four-run first inning outburst for USM. Curcuru blasted his sixth home run of
the year, a two-run shot in the seventh, to highlight an eight-run explosion
that put the game out of reach. Senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) added
a solo home run in the eighth, his second of the season.
Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) collected six hits on the day for USM.
Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) had four hits and four RBI, while

Beavers Upset Huskies, 8-3
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior Pat Cutter (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Matt
Bigda (Shrewsbury, Mass.) combined to drive in five runs in the first inning to
lead the Babson College Beavers to an 8-3 victory over the nationally ranked
University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-league college baseball action
Wednesday afternoon at Beaver Field.
The Huskies, who had won four straight and 12 of their last 13 games,
dipped to 28-9 on the season. USM is ranked first in the latest New England
Division III College Baseball Coaches poll. The Beavers improved to 18-9.
Cutter stroked a three-run double to right-center off Husky freshman
starter Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine), and Bigda followed with a two-run
homer to left, to give the Beavers a 5-0 advantage in the first inning. It was
Bigda's first home run of the season.
Southern Maine scored two runs in the fourth on a walk by sophomore Andy
Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) and back-to-back doubles by freshmen Brian Marshall
(Danvers, Mass.) and Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine).
Beavers' senior Dave Millman (Billerica, Mass.) hit a solo home run in the
seventh inning, his team-leading eighth round-tripper of the year.
USM scored its final run in the ninth inning when Marshall walked, moved
to third on McDonough's second double of the game, and scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Bill Fitzgerald (Scituate, Mass.) went eight innings for the
Beavers, improving his record to 5-0 for the season. He allowed just three hits
and two runs, while striking out three and walking five.
Cutter, Bigda, Millman and freshman Phil McGinness (Shrewsbury, Mass.)
each finished with two hits for Babson. McDonough was the Huskies' lone repeat
hitter.
Southern Maine will conclude its regular season schedule with a Little
East Conference doubleheader at Keene State College on Saturday (May 5),
starting at 12:00 noon.. Babson will host Bentley College on Wednesday (May 2)
at 4:00 p.m.

Tyler Delorme Honored by Little East Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore left fielder Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named
Little East Conference Co- Player of the Week for the week of April 23-29. He
shared the weekly award with Plymouth State College sophomore Matt Salokangas
(New Ipswich, N.H.). The conference office made the announcement late Monday.
This is the first time in his USM career that Delorme has been so honored
by the Little East Conference.
Delorme hit .531 (17 for 32), with 18 runs scored, 17 RBI, six walks, two
stolen bases, two doubles, three home runs and an .875 slugging percentage to
lead the Huskies to a 6-1 week.
He is hitting .442 (65 for 147) this season and leads the team in at-bats
(147), hits (65), doubles (12), home runs (9), and total bases (104).
A two-year starter in leftfield, Delorme led the Huskies with a .397
batting average last season. He posted team-highs in hits (69), home runs (8),
RBI (57), slugging percentage (.638) and on base percentage (.460).
He carries a .417 career batting average, with 24 doubles, 17 home runs
and 112 RBI.
Delorme was selected as a third-team All -American last season by the
American Baseball Coaches Association. He was also selected as a first team
all-star by both the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association
and the Little East Conference, and was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player in
the 2001 NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament.
Southern Maine concludes its regular season schedule with a Little East
Conference doubleheader at Keene State College on Saturday (May 5), starting at
12:00 p.m. The Huskies will begin play in the 2001 Little East Conference
Championship tournament on Thursday (May 10). The Huskies have already clinched
a first-round bye in the tournament.
USM, which has won twelve of its last thirteen games, is ranked number one
in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll and fifth
nationally in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association Division III

Lemieux, Delorme Lead Huskies Past Rams
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) recorded his
second collegiate victory and sophomore slugger Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) smacked his team-leading ninth home run to lead the nationally ranked
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 13-5 victory over the Framingham State
College Rams in non-league college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Towers
Field.
The Huskies, who have won 12 of their last 13 games, improved to 28-8 on
the season. USM is also ranked first in the latest New England Division III
College Baseball Coaches poll. The Rams concluded their season at 13-17.
Following a one-out, first-inning double by sophomore Andy Lang (New
Bedford, Mass.), Delorme drove a low pitch from Rams' senior hurler Matt Feldman
(Miami, Fla.) deep over the left field fence to give the Huskies a quick 2-0
advantage.
USM added five runs in the fourth on a walk, back-to-back doubles by
juniors Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) and Pete L'Italien (Salem, Mass.), an RBI
single by senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine), an error and a sacrifice
fly by Delorme.
Framingham responded with three unearned runs in the fifth inning, on an
error, an RBI double by sophomore Nick Marzilli (Warwick, R.I.), and a run-
scoring single by freshman Jamie Wadsworth (Upton, Mass.).
Run-scoring singles by Lang and senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine)
sandwiched a pair of RBI sacrifice flies by Delorme and freshman Drew Palmer
(Rothesay, N.B.) to produce four runs in the sixth to give Southern Maine an
insurmountable 11-4 lead.
Lemieux, making his third career start, pitched five effective innings.
He allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out three and walking
just one.
Lang, Gureckis and freshman Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) each had a
pair of hits, Loveless' both doubles. Delorme finished with four RBI, while
Lang and Dority each drove in two runs.
Marzilli, Wadsworth and junior Gregg Rockwell (West Roxbury, Mass.) each
had two hits and one RBI for the Rams.
Southern Maine will travel to Babson College Wednesday (May 2) for a 3:00
p.m. game.

Delorme, Lang Lead Huskies Past Colonials
DANBURY, Conn. -- Sophomores Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and
Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) combined for 15 hits and 14 RBI to lead the
nationally ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a doubleheader sweep
of the Western Connecticut State University Colonials, 19-13 and 23-7, in Little
East Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies, who have won 11 of their last 12, improve to 27-8 overall and
lead the Little East with an 11-1 mark. USM was ranked first in the latest New
England Division III College Baseball Coaches poll and fifth in the American
Baseball Coaches Association Division III national poll. The Colonials dipped
to 8-18-1 for the season and 2-9 in the LEC.
Southern Maine's hitters pounded out 51 hits off six different Colonials'
pitchers in the doubleheader, including 13 for extra bases . Delorme paced the
onslaught with eight hits and six RBI. He hit his team-leading eighth home run
of the season in the eighth inning of the second game, a two-run shot to left
field. Lang added seven hits, including a school record tying three doubles in
the first game, and eight RBI. Freshman Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine)
contributed six hits and five RBI. Seniors Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) and
Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) each stroked five hits, with Curcuru
knocking in four runs. Freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) rapped four
hits and drove in eight runs.
Junior Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine) picked up his fifth win of the year
in the opener, while senior Todd Southwick (Nashua, N.H.) went the distance in
the nightcap to improve his record to 5-1 on the season.

Huskies, Warriors Split Little East Doubleheader Showdown
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) pounded out
five hits and drove in three runs to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies to a 15-8 win over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in
the nightcap of their Little East Conference baseball doubleheader at the ECSU
Baseball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Eastern Connecticut came from behind to win the first game, 5-4, on an
unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Southern Maine remained in first place in the Little East Conference with
a 9-1 mark, and is now 25-8 overall. Eastern Connecticut stays a half game
behind the Huskies in the conference at 9-2, and is 27-10 overall. The teams
were ranked one-two in the latest New England coaches poll.
Lang had a key two-run single, and later scored on a wild pitch in the
Huskies' four-run sixth inning. He had another single during USM's big seven-
run ninth inning.
Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) had three hits and a pair of RBI.
Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) had a three-run double in the big
ninth inning outburst.
Junior John Kubachka (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the Warriors with four base
hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and four RBI.
Sophomore Erik Carlson (Portland, Maine), the second of four USM pitchers,
picked up his second win of the season. Junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine)
came on in the eighth inning to record his second save. Eastern senior starter
Brian DePaulo (Waterbury, Conn.) absorbed the loss.
In the opening game, the Warriors rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 4-2
lead with four runs in the seventh. After USM tied the game in the eighth on
freshman Brian Marshall's (Danvers, Mass.) two-out, two-run double, the Warriors
pulled out the victory with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning.
Eastern senior Brian Gouin (Sprague, Conn.) picked up the victory in
relief. Pelletier took the loss for USM.
Southern Maine travels to Danbury, Conn., to play Western Connecticut
State University in a makeup double-header on Sunday, starting at 12:00 p.m.
Eastern Connecticut is at Tufts on Tuesday.

Huskies Outslug Judges
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) notched
three hits and three RBI and freshman Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) picked
up his first collegiate victory to lead the nationally ranked University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 14-7 triumph over the Brandeis University Judges in
non-league college baseball action Wednesday afternoon at the Stein/Appelbaum
Diamond.
The Huskies have won eight straight to improve to 24-7 on the season. USM
is ranked first in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches
poll and fifth in the latest American Baseball Coaches Division III national
poll. The Judges dipped to 18-17.
Southern Maine struck early, exploding for seven runs in the first inning.
Delorme and junior catcher Pete L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) rapped RBI singles, and
sophomore Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) added a bases-clearing double to
highlight the Huskies' big inning. Delorme blasted his team-leading eight home
run of the season in the second inning, a solo shot to left field.
USM piled on five insurance runs in the ninth inning on a passed ball, a
two-run single by sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.), an RBI single by
Delorme and a sacrifice fly by senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.).
Thibodeau pitched six strong innings for the Huskies, allowing just five
hits and two unearned runs. He struck out one and walked two.
Lang also had three hits for the Huskies. Tedesco knocked in three runs
while Lang added two RBI.
Junior Jeremy Taro (Southbridge, Mass.) paced the Judges with two doubles
and three RBI. Sophomore Andy Kahn (Los Angeles Calif.) and freshman Lars

Delorme, McDonough Power Huskies Past White Mules
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and
freshman Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine) combined for six hits and five RBI to
power the nationally ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 11-5
victory over the Colby College White Mules in non-league college baseball action
Tuesday afternoon at Towers Field.
The Huskies have won seven straight to improve to 23-7 on the season. USM
is ranked first in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches
poll, and fifth in the latest American Baseball Coaches Division III national
poll. The White Mules dipped to 6-12.
Southern Maine scored three runs in the first inning on two walks, a hit
batter, three wild pitches and RBI singles by Delorme and McDonough.
The Huskies added a run in the second on a RBI single by senior Jody
Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) for a 4-0 lead. Colby responded with three runs in
the third on a RBI double by senior Louie Distasi (Chelmsford, Mass) and a two-
run homer by senior Andy Tripp (Saco, Maine). The White Mules tied the game on
a wild pitch in the fourth.
USM took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, using a walk, an
infield error, a wild pitch and three ground balls to score two runs without
benefit of a base hit. Back-to-back doubles in the fifth by senior Jason Dority
(Winterport, Maine) and McDonough pushed the lead to 7-4.
Southern Maine added three runs in the sixth on a groundball RBI by
Curcuru, an RBI triple by freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and a run-
scoring single by Dority.
Delorme capped the Huskies' scoring with an inside-the-park home run in
the seventh inning, a long drive deep over the right-fielder's head that went
all the way to the 416 foot mark in right-center. He finished with three RBI
and three hits. McDonough added a pair of RBI on a double and two singles and
Dority notched two hits and two RBI.
Senior Todd Southwick (Nashua, N.H.) picked up his fourth win of the
season, working 3.2 innings in relief of freshman starter Mike Caggiano
(Augusta, Maine). Southwick allowed one run on two hits and walked one batter.
Distasi was the White Mules lone repeat hitter, recording a double and a
single, and two RBI.
Sophomore Jason Cunnane (Wrentham, Mass.) took the loss for Colby, working
five innings. He allowed eight runs on six hits, with five walks and six
strikeouts.
Southern Maine will travel to Brandeis University Wednesday (April 25) for
a 3:00 p.m. game. Colby next plays at Bates College on Friday (April 27) at
4:00 p.m.

Maine) earned his first collegiate victory and the fifth-ranked University of
Southern Maine turned a school record five double plays as the Huskies defeated
the Bowdoin College Polar Bears, 12-3, in a non-league baseball game Monday
afternoon at Towers Field.
The Huskies extended their winning streak to six straight and improved to
22-7 on the season. USM was ranked fifth in the ABCA Division III national poll
and first in the New England Division III coaches poll that were released
Monday. The Polar Bears dipped to 11-13.
Lemieux pitched strong seven innings in his second career start, allowing
eight hits and two runs. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. He was
assisted by the Huskies' defense, which recorded five groundball double plays,
one short of the NCAA Division III single-game record.
Hot-hitting junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) keyed a five-run first-
inning outburst for Southern Maine, blasting a two-run homer to left field. It
was his third round tripper in USM's last five games. Freshman Brian Marshall
(Danvers, Mass.) added an RBI single in the fifth inning and hit his second
collegiate home run, a solo shot to left, in the seventh.
Senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomore Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.) each stroked two-run singles for the Huskies, while
sophomore second-baseman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.), who participated in all
five of the Huskies' twin-killings, drove in USM's final run with a ground ball.
Marshall and freshman Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) each had three
hits for Southern Maine, Marshall adding three RBI. Richardson and freshman
Drew Palmer (Rothesay, N.B.) each collected two hits.
Freshman infielder Kevin Bougie (Sanford, Maine) led the Polar Bears with
four singles and an RBI. Classmate Manny Lora (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was Bowdoin's
only other repeat hitter with a double and two singles.
Freshman Andy Workman (Ipswich, Mass.) absorbed the loss for the Polar
Bears. He pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and eight runs. He struck
out four and walked two, and also hit three Huskies' batters, two of whom
scored.
Southern Maine will host Colby College Tuesday (April 24) at 3:00 p.m.
Bowdoin will entertain the University of Massachusetts Boston Wednesday (April
25) at 3:30 p.m.

Dority, Gureckis Power Huskies Over Beacons
BOSTON, Mass -- Senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) rapped six hits
and drove in nine runs and junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) added four hits
and seven RBI to power the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a
doubleheader sweep of the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons, 25-7 and
10-8, in Little East Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at the Boston
College High School baseball field.
The Huskies have now won five straight to improve to 21-7 overall and lead
the Little East Conference with an 8-0 record. This is the 17th consecutive
year that Southern Maine has won at least 20 games. The Beacons dipped to 11-17
on the season and 3-7 in conference play. The Huskies were the home team in the
second game because that game was originally scheduled to be played in Gorham,
but was rescheduled to Boston due to previous postponements.
Southern Maine belted 39 hits on the day and played errorless ball to
improve its all-time record against the Beacons to 20-0.
The Huskies scored 12 times in the first three innings, including nine in
their first at bat, of the opener to put the game away early. USM sophomore
starter Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine) worked 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits
and five runs, to record his third win of the season. He struck out five and
walked four.
In the nightcap, USM rallied from a 5-3 deficit with four runs in the
fourth on an RBI double by freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.), a two-run
single by Dority, and an RBI single by freshman Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine),
to take a 7-5 lead. The Huskies added three runs in the fifth on senior Jody
Curcuru's (Gloucester, Mass.) RBI double , an RBI single by Dority and an run-
scoring double by sophomore Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.).
Junior Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine) earned the win with 1.2 innings of
one-hit relief, improving his record to 4-0. Junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford,
Maine) closed out the game in the ninth to register his first save of the
season.
Dority and Gureckis each hit home runs in the first game. Curcuru, senior
Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) each had four hits on the day.
Beacons' sophomore Adam Waxman (Portland, Maine), who formerly played for
Portland (Maine) High School, hit two home runs in the second game, giving him
seven on the season.
Southern Maine will host Bowdoin College Monday (April 23) at 4:30 p.m. in
a re-scheduled game. UMass Boston will play at Babson College on Monday at 3:00
p.m.

Huskies Seniors Scuttle Corsairs
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.), Shaun Richardson
(Kennebunk, Maine) and Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) combined for 11 hits and
10 RBI and classmate Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) pitched a complete game to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a doubleheader sweep of the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs, 15-7 and 5-3, in Little East
Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.
The Huskies, playing on their home field for the first time this season,
improved to 19-7 overall and 6-0 in the Little East. The Corsairs dipped to
18-10 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. Southern Maine was ranked
number one in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll
and sixth nationally in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association
Division III Poll. UMass Dartmouth was ranked sixth in the New England Poll.
Toomey sparked the Huskies' 20-hit onslaught in the opener, clubbing a
two-run double and a two-run homer to push USM to a 10-1 lead after three
innings. The home run was his fifth of the season. He finished the game with
five RBI.
Curcuru stroked five hits on the day, including his fifth home run of the
year, while Richardson had four hits and four RBI. Sophomore Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.) also had four hits, including his fifth home run. Junior
Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) smacked his first round tripper of the season,
while freshmen Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) and Brian Marshall (Danvers,
Mass.) each hit their first collegiate home runs for the Huskies
Russell pitched effectively for the Huskies in the opener, scattering 11
hits over nine innings to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed just
three earned runs, with five strikeouts and two walks. The win was the 17th of
his USM career, tying him for eighth all-time with Chuck Chadbourne (1981-84).
In the nightcap, Southern Maine rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh
on a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line by Richardson. Curcuru
ignited the Huskies winning two-run eighth inning rally with a leadoff triple to
deep right-center. After two infield outs, junior Peter L'Italien (Salem,
Mass.) worked a walk and stole second. A wild pitch by Corsair senior starter
Tim Troup (Halifax, Mass.) plated Curcuru for a 4-3. Lemieux then singled to
center to score L'Italien for an insurance run.
Junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine) pitched 1.2 shutout innings in
relief to record his fourth win of the year.
Freshman Kevin Walsh (New Bedford, Mass.) led UMD with five hits,
including two home runs, and seven RBI.
Southern Maine will travel to the University of Massachusetts Boston
Sunday (April 22) for a 12:00 noon Little East Conference doubleheader. UMass
Dartmouth will play at Tufts on Tuesday (April 24) at 3:00 p.m.

Curcuru, Gunning and Pelletier Spark Huskies Over Vikings
SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) cracked a
three-run homer and junior pitchers Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine) and Alden
Pelletier (Sanford, Maine) combined for four scoreless innings of relief to
spark the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a come-from-behind, 11-4
victory over the Salem State College Vikings in non-league college baseball
action Thursday afternoon at Palmer Cove Field.
The Huskies snapped a two-game losing skid wit the victory and improved to
17-7 on the season. The Vikings dipped to 10-12.
Southern Maine took the early lead, scoring three runs in the second
inning on an RBI single by sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.), an RBI
double by sophomore Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by
junior Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.). Salem came back to take a 4-3 advantage
after five innings, but USM tied the game in the sixth on a L'Italien single, a
wild pitch and a Vikings' error.
Tedesco started the six-run eighth-inning explosion for the Huskies with a
leadoff walk. After two outs, junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) gave USM the
lead for good with an RBI double down the right field line to score freshman
pinch-runner Drew Palmer (Rothesay, N.B.). Senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk,
Maine) followed with his own RBI double, and senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.)
then singled home Richardson. Sophomore Tyler Delorme's (Enosburg Falls, Vt.)
ensuing double left runners on second and third for Curcuru, who blasted his
fourth home run of the season over the right field fence to make it 10-4. USM
added an unearned run in the ninth.
Gunning worked the sixth and seventh innings in relief of freshman starter
Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) to pick up his third win of the season without
a loss. He did not allow a hit, while walking two and striking out two.
Pelletier, making his first appearance since April 4th, pitched hitless ball in
the eighth and ninth innings, with three strikeouts and no walks.
Freshman starter Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.), who worked into the eighth
inning for the Vikings, suffered his second loss of the year. Cahill is the
younger brother of former Southern Maine infielder Rich Cahill (1995-98).
Curcuru paced the Huskies with two hits and three RBI, while Gureckis
added two doubles and an RBI.
Sophomore Mike Cornacchini (Swampscott, Mass.) led the Vikings with a pair
of doubles and two RBI. Classmate Nate Bertolino (Gloucester, Mass.)
contributed a double, a single and an RBI.
Southern Maine will play on its own campus field for the first time this
season Saturday (April 21) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth in a Little East Conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon.
Salem State travels to Worcester State College for a doubleheader Saturday.

Hannigan, Osborne Slug Monks Past Huskies
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine -- Sophomore Lucas Hannigan (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine) and senior Steve Osborne (Millinocket, Maine) each slugged a pair of home
runs and combined for ten RBI to power the St. Joseph's College Monks to a 13-5
victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-league college
baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Durwood Holman Field.
The Monks have won eight straight to improve to 24-2 on the season. The
Huskies dropped their second straight game to dip to 17-6. The game was played
at Cape Elizabeth High School because neither teams home field was ready for
play.
St. Joseph's scored three runs in the top of the first on a leadoff home
run by sophomore Nick Mirabello (Arlington, Mass.) and a two-run shot by
Osborne, his 14th of the season. Junior Jesse LaCasse (Madison, Maine) belted a
solo homer in the third and Hannigan pushed the Monks lead to 5-0 with a
sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
USM rallied with three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by sophomore Andy
Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) and a wild
pitch by Monks' junior right-hander Brent Dan (Sumner, Maine). The Huskies then
loaded the bases on three straight two-out walks, but Dan got out of the jam
with a ground ball to end the inning still leading 5-3.
Hannigan put the game out of reach with a grand slam homer in the seventh
off Huskies' freshman reliever Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.). Osborne led off
the Monks' ninth with his second home run, and 15th of the season, to give him
190 career hits, breaking the St. Joseph's school record of 189 hits held by
Dave Quintal (1997-2000). Hannigan added a two run dinger later in the inning
to give him seven RBI. Senior Adam Newell (Locke Mills, Maine) closed out the
scoring with a solo homer, St. Joseph' seventh round-tripper of the game.
Lang hit a solo blast in the eighth and the Huskies added a run on a wild
pitch in the ninth.
Dan went the distance for the victory, his fifth of the year without a
loss, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. He walked seven in the cold,
windy condition and struck out ten batters. USM freshman Mike Caggiano
(Augusta, Maine), making his second college start, suffered the loss, working
4.1 innings.
Osborne finished with three hits for St. Joseph's, while Hannigan and
LaCasse each added two. Lang led the Huskies with three hits and two RBI.
Dority was USM' only other repeat hitter, with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Southern Maine will travel to Salem State College for single game Thursday
(April 19) at 3:00 p.m. St. Joseph's will host Husson College Thursday at 4:00
p.m. at Southern Maine Technical College.

Power Gulls Nip Huskies in Ninth Inning
BEVERLY, Mass. -- Sophomore Mike Lucas (Amity, Conn.) singled home the
winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Endicott College Power
Gulls to a 7-6, come-from-behind victory over the University of Southern Maine
Huskies in non-league college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at North Field.
The Huskies, who had won four straight and 16 of their last 17 games, are
now 16-6 on the season. The Power Gulls are 9-10. Southern Maine is ranked
number one in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll
and sixth nationally in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association
Division III Poll.
USM, which trailed 3-1 after four innings, tied the game in the fifth on
an RBI single by sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and a double
steal by Delorme and senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine), who stole home.
USM grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. Senior Jody
Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) and sophomore Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) each
singled, freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) moved the them up with a
sacrifice bunt and both runners then scored on an infield throwing error. The
Huskies pushed their lead to 6-3 in the seventh when Delorme singled, stole
second and scored on a single by Curcuru.
Endicott tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the
gap to 6-5, then tied the game in the eighth on a hit batter, a single by
sophomore Steve Tierinni (East Hartford, Conn.), a wild pitch, an intentional
walk to junior Bryan Caruso (Northfield, N.H.) and an RBI single by senior
Justin Spurr (Georgetown, Mass.).
Junior Andrew Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) started the Power Gulls rally in the
ninth with a one-out double off Huskies' senior right-hander Todd Southwick
(Nashua, N.H.). Junior Eric Costantino (Salem, Mass.) followed with a bloop
single behind second base that moved Gagnon to third and Lucas then singled into
right field for the game-winner.
Junior Rod Amidon (Williston, Vt.) pitched the ninth inning to pick up his
fifth win of the season for the Power Gulls while Southwick suffered his first
loss of the year.
Delorme had three hits for the Huskies. Curcuru added two hits and two
RBI. Richardson, senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) and junior Pete L'Italien
(Salem, Mass.) also each stroked a pair of hits.
Junior Santi DeOleo (Salem, Mass.) and Lucas each had three hits for the
Power Gulls, while Gagnon and Spurr each notched two.
Southern Maine will host St. Joseph's College Wednesday (April 18) at Cape
Elizabeth High School. Game time is 4:00 p.m. The Huskies' home field on the
Gorham campus is still not yet ready for play. Endicott will travel to Anna

Plymouth State College Panthers, 10-6 and 7-6, in Little East Conference college
baseball action Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Connecticut State University
Baseball Stadium.
The Huskies, who have won four straight and 15 of their last 16 games, are
now 16-5 overall and 4-0 in the Little East. The Panthers have lost seven in a
row to drop to 2-15 on the season and 1-6 in the LEC. USM was ranked number two
in the latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll and sixth
nationally in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association Division III
Poll. The games were played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium due to the snow still
covering both the Southern Maine and the Plymouth State fields.
In the first game, Lang blasted a grand slam home run to center field off
Panthers' sophomore reliever Jason Egan (Sharon, Mass.) in the bottom of the
ninth to break a 6-6 deadlock. It was his first homer of the season. Sophomore
Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) reached on an error to start the ninth.
Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) drew a walk and classmate Shaun
Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) laid down a bunt single to load the bases and set
the stage for Lang's heroics.
Plymouth had grabbed a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh but USM tied the
game in the bottom of the inning on Delorme's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by
senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine). Sophomore right-hander Erik Carlson
(Portland. Maine) worked 1.1 innings of hitless relief to pick up his first win
of the season.
In the nightcap, Gureckis' ninth inning, bases loaded single down the left
field line off junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.) plated Richardson to complete the
sweep. Freshmen Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine) and Colin Loveless (South Paris,
Maine) started the Huskies ninth inning rally with a single and a walk.
Richardson followed with another bunt hit to load the bases. Senior Pat Toomey
(Medford, Mass.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score McDonough. Locke then threw
a wild pitch to move the runners up, then committed a balk to tie the game.
After a pair of intentional walks to reload the bases, Gureckis followed with
his game-winning hit that scored Richardson.
Southern Maine trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, but Lang's
two-run single closed the gap to 6-4.
Loveless picked his second win of the season in relief. Lang finished
with four hits and six RBI on the day.
Southern Maine will travel to Endicott College Tuesday (April 17) for a
single game at 3:30 p.m. Plymouth State will play at Dartmouth College
Wednesday (April 18) at 3:00 p.m.

Delorme, Adams Lead Huskies Past Judges
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Delorme (Enosburg
Falls, Vt.) smacked three hits and drove in three runs, and junior right-handed
pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) picked up his first victory of the season,
to pace the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-4 win over the Brandeis
University Judges in a non-league college baseball game Friday afternoon at
Marcus Field.
The Huskies, who have won 13 of their last 14 games, are now 14-5 on the
season. The Judges are 15-11. Southern Maine was ranked number three in the
latest New England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll and sixth
nationally in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association Division III
Poll.
USM was the home team for the game which was originally scheduled to be
played in Gorham, but had to be moved to Brandeis due to the snow still covering
the Huskies' home field in Gorham.
Southern Maine erased a one-run deficit with two runs in the bottom of the
second. Delorme led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a
ground ball. He then stole third and scored on an overthrow. Freshman Brian
Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) doubled with two outs and scored on a single by
classmate Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine).
Brandeis tied the game in the third, but back-to-back doubles by freshman
Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) and senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk,
Maine) put USM ahead to stay. Delorme singled in Richardson for a 4-2 lead.
Southern Maine added two runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Marshall and
freshman Adam Lemieux's (Cumberland, Maine) RBI single.
Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) singled to lead off the sixth, and
Delorme followed with his fourth home run of the season, to left-field.
Lemieux doubled with one out in the seventh, and scored the Huskies final
run on a single by Richardson.
Brandeis scored its final two runs in the seventh on junior Jim Freethey's
(Manchester, N.H.) RBI single and senior Rob Rhoads' (Orono, Maine) solo homer,
his third of the season.
Adams went five innings to record his first victory of the season. He
allowed five hits and one earned run, with five walks and two strikeouts.
Sophomore Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine) pitched well in relief, going the final
four innings to pick up his first save. He allowed two unearned runs on three
hits, while striking out two.
Sophomore Kevin Kay (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) took the loss for the
Judges, dropping to 1-2 on the season.
Southern Maine will host Plymouth State College in a Little East
Conference doubleheader Saturday (April 14) at the Eastern Connecticut State
Baseball Stadium in Willamantic, Connecticut. The first game will start at 1:00
p.m. Brandeis will host UMass Dartmouth Monday (April 16) in a 1:30 p.m.
doubleheader.

Schedule Changes
GORHAM, Maine -- Today's baseball game between the University of
Southern Maine and Brandeis University has been postponed due to the rain. It
has been rescheduled for Friday, April 13, at 12:00 p.m., and will be played at
Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
Also, Saturday's Little East Conference doubleheader between the
University of Southern Maine and Plymouth State College will be played in

Pat Toomey Again Honored by Little East Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named Little East
Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 1-8. The conference office
made the announcement late Monday.
This is the second consecutive week, and third time in his career, that
Toomey has been so honored by the Little East. He was selected as the LEC
Player of the Week for the weeks of April 10-16, 2000 and March 26-April 1,
2001.
Toomey continued his torrid early-season hitting , going 13 for 23 (.565),
with 10 runs scored, 14 RBI, a walk, three stolen bases, two doubles, two home
runs and a .913 slugging percentage to lead the Huskies to a 5-1 week.
He currently leads the team in hitting (.544), at bats (68), hits (37),
triples (1), home runs (3), total bases (54), slugging percentage (.794), stolen
bases (10), and assists (50), while committing only two errors in 74 chances in
the field.
A four-year starter in the Huskies' infield, Toomey is again handling the
shortstop duties. He hit .355 last season, second-best on the squad, with three
home runs and 34 RBI. Toomey also stole a team-leading 29 bases, the fourth-
highest single-season total in the program's history.
He carries a .382 career batting average, with ten home runs and 131
career RBI, eighth-most in school history. His 213 career base hits and 161
career runs scored are each good for sixth-best. His 79 career stolen bases
ranks second all-time behind Huskies' career leader Cory Adams' 82 thefts. He
recently eclipsed Jim Broughton's career assists mark of 433 and now holds both
the all-time school and New England Division III records with 477 career
assists.
Southern Maine is scheduled to host Brandeis University Thursday (April
12), if a suitable site can be found. The Huskies' home field remains
unplayable due to the large amount of snow covering it. USM, which has won
twelve of its last thirteen games, is ranked number two in the latest New
England Division III College Baseball Coaches Poll, and sixth nationally in the
latest American Baseball Coaches Association Division III Poll.

Lang, Huskies Rally in Seventh Inning to Earn Split with Lyons
NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Andy Lang's (New Bedford, Mass.) RBI bunt
single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in the winning run to give the
University of Southern Maine Huskies a 12-11 victory and a split of their
college baseball doubleheader with the Wheaton College Lyons Sunday afternoon at
James V. Sidell Stadium.
The Lyons snapped the Huskies' 11-game winning streak in the first game of
the twinbill, 6-0, behind the two-hit pitching of junior Andy Muller
(Bridgewater, Mass.).
The Huskies, ranked third in the latest New England Division III College
Baseball Coaches Poll, are now 13-5 on the season. The Lyons, ranked eighth,
are 13-7. USM was the home team for the second game because the game was
originally scheduled to be played in Gorham, but had to be moved to Wheaton due
to the snow still covering the Huskies' home field.
In the nightcap, Southern Maine trailed 10-9 in the fifth, but senior Jody
Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) tied the game with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom
of the inning. Sophomore Jeff Ambrosini (New Ipswich, N.H.) homered in the top
of the sixth to put the Lyons back up by one run and set the stage for USM's
game-winning rally.
Senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) led off the bottom of the
seventh with a bunt single. Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) advanced
Richardson to third with a single. Richardson scored on sophomore Tyler
Delorme's (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) fielder's choice grounder. Delorme moved to
second on an infield overthrow on the play and Curcuru then moved him to third
with a ground ball to the right side. Lang then laid down a perfect drag bunt
single to score Delorme with the winning run.
Huskies' freshman southpaw Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) pitched a
one-two-three seventh, with two strikeouts, to pick up his first college
victory. Wheaton junior Mike Spavento (Milton, Mass.) was the losing pitcher.
In the first game, Muller pitched a complete game shutout to record his
third victory of the season. He allowed just two hits, a single by Richardson
and a double by Delorme, while striking out eight and walking two. Senior Mark
Russell (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for the Huskies. He pitched five
innings, with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Wheaton senior Alan Beausoleil's (Danielson, Conn.) two-run single in the
first gave Muller all the runs he would need. Junior Will Bissonette
(Roslindale, Mass.) doubled in two runs in the fourth inning, and Beausoleil
completed Wheaton's scoring with a two-run homer, his second of the season, in
the fifth.
Southern Maine is tentatively scheduled to host Bowdoin College Tuesday
(April 10) at 3:30 p.m., if a playable field can be found. Wheaton will travel
to Brandeis University for a 3:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

Toomey Leads Huskies Sweep of Anchormen for Eleventh Straight Win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) cracked
eight hits, including two home runs, and drove in ten runs to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the Rhode Island College
Anchormen, 15-3 and 12-8, in Little East Conference baseball action Saturday
afternoon at the RIC baseball field.
The Huskies have won eleven straight to improve their record to 12-4
overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Anchormen dropped to 3-9 on the season
and 0-2 in the LEC. Southern Maine was the home team for the doubleheader
because the games were originally scheduled to be played in Gorham, but had to
be moved to Providence due to the large amount of snow still covering the
Huskies' home field.
Toomey continued his torrid early-season hitting, recording one of the
finest days in the history of the USM program. The four-year starting infielder
went 8-for-11 at the plate, with seven runs scored, 10 RBI, a double, a pair of
home runs, and two stolen bases. He also handled ten chances in the field
flawlessly. For the season Toomey is hitting .574 (35-61) and has made just one
error in 71 chances in the field.
In the first game, sophomores Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and Andy
Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) drove in runs in the first inning put the Huskies
ahead to stay. Lang's two-run double highlighted the Huskies seven-run second
inning. Toomey finished the Huskies' scoring with a two-run homer in the
eighth.
Sophomore Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine) worked seven innings to register
his second win of the year. He allowed seven singles, with six walks and two
strikeouts. Freshman Jeff Steere (Chepachet, R.I.) took the loss for RIC.
USM trailed 6-0 in the nightcap before exploding for 11 runs in the bottom
of the fifth on eight hits, a walk, a hit batter and two Anchormen errors.
Toomey drove in five runs in the inning with a two-run single and a three-run
homer. Delorme singled in two runs, senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) had
an RBI triple and senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) and freshman Pat
McDonough (Windham, Maine) added RBI singles to complete the Huskies' big
inning.
Junior lefthander Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine) picked the win in relief,
going 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. Freshman southpaw Brandon
Labrie (Woonsocket, R.I.) went the distance for RIC, allowing 12 hits.
Delorme finished with four hits and four RBI on the day, while Curcuru
added three hits and two RBI.
Southern Maine will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Wheaton College
(Norton, Mass.) on Sunday (April 8). RIC will host Bridgewater State Monday
(April 9) at 3:00 p.m.

Pat Toomey Honored by Little East and ECAC

Conference Player of the Week for the week of March 26-April 1. The conference
office made the announcement late Monday.
Toomey also was selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III New England Co-Hitter of the Week along with senior Dave Santos of
Johnson and Wales University. The ECAC office made its announcement Wednesday
afternoon.
This is the second time in his USM career that Toomey has been so honored
by the Little East Conference. He was selected as the LEC Player of the Week
for the week of April 10-16, 2000. It is his first honor by the ECAC.
Toomey hit a blistering .579 (11 for 19) with nine runs scored, seven RBI,
two walks, three stolen bases, a double, a triple, a home run and an .895

stolen bases (7), while committing only one error in 53 chances in the field.

Huskies Sweep Peacocks, Finish Florida Trip with Seven Straight Wins
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sophomore outfielder Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls,
Vt.) cracked six hits on the day, including a three-run homer, to help power the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the Upper Iowa University
Peacocks, 4-3 and 21-10, in college baseball action Wednesday morning at Tarry
Park.
The Huskies, winners of seven straight, finished their southern trip with
an 8-4 record. The Peacocks dipped to 5-5 for the season.
In the first game, junior catcher Pete L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) got the
Huskies on the board, tying the game with an RBI single in the second. USM took
the lead for good with a three-run third. Following a walk to senior Pat Toomey
(Medford, Mass.) and single by Delorme, senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.)
plated Toomey with an RBI double. Sophomore Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.)
scored Delorme with a ground ball, and senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine)
drove in Tedesco with a single.
Senior right-hander Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) went 5.1 innings, to
pick-up his first win of the season. Junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine)
relieved Russell in the sixth to set up junior closer Ryan Adams (Sanford,
Maine) for the seventh. Adams retired the side in order in the seventh to
register his first save of the year.
Delorme, Dority and L'Italien each had two hits in game one.
Tedesco and Delorme each belted three-run homers in the nightcap as USM
outslugged Upper Iowa for a 21-10 win. USM pounded out 23 hits against three
Peacock hurlers. Senior Mike Clapp (Rockville, Iowa) homered for UIU.
Tedesco's blast in the fourth and Delorme's in the fifth helped the
Huskies bust open a one-run game. Freshman Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine) drove
in five runs on three hits, while Delorme had four RBI. Toomey, Delorme,
Curcuru and freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) each had four hits in the
second game.
Junior southpaw Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine), the second of five USM
pitchers, earned his first victory of the season, relieving freshman starter
Travis Ferrante (Portland, Maine) in the second inning.
Southern Maine will open the northern portion of its schedule with a 3:00
p.m. game Friday (March 30) at Wheaton College (Norton, Mass.).

Todd Southwick Named Little East Pitcher of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior right-handed pitcher Todd Southwick (Nashua,
N.H.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named
Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first week (March 18-25) of
the 2001 season. The conference office made the announcement late Monday.
This is the second time in his USM career that Southwick has been honored
by the conference. He was selected as the LEC Pitcher of the Week for the week
of April 3-9, 2000.
Southwick has compiled a 2-0 record with a 0.87 ERA in his first two
appearances this year for Southern Maine, defeating Macalester College and
Calvin College during the Huskies' annual southern trip to Fort Myers, Florida.
He went 7.2 innings in the season-opener against Macalester, then picked up the
win against Calvin with 2.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. He has struck
out ten and walked three in the two appearances.
Last season, Southwick started eight games, compiling a 3-3 record with a
4.74 ERA in 13 overall appearances. The crafty right-hander pitched 53.0
innings last year, with 28 strikeouts and just 13 walks, and did not allow a
home run.
Southwick was named as a tri-captain this season by Huskies veteran head
coach Ed Flaherty, who noted that "Todd came into preseason practice this year
in unbelievable shape and has developed into one of our mainstays on the mound."
Southern Maine opens the northern portion of its schedule Friday (March
30) with a single game at Wheaton College (3:00 p.m.).

Liddy Hurls Huskies to Fifth Straight Win, 8-1, over Minnesota-Morris
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sophomore right-hander Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine)
pitched six innings of one-run, five-hit ball to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to their fifth straight victory, an 8-1 decision over the
University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars , in college baseball action Tuesday
morning at Tarry Park.
The Huskies improved to 6-4 on the season. The Cougars dropped to 1-5.
The Huskies are ranked number six in the first New England Division III College
Baseball Coaches Poll of the season.
Southern Maine gave Liddy all the runs he would need in the bottom of the
first inning, tallying three on a single by senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.),
an RBI double by sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.), a pair of walks
and a costly two-run infield throwing error.
USM added three more runs in the second. Junior Peter L'Italien (Salem,
Mass.) singled with one out and senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine)
followed with a walk. Toomey then cleared the bases with a triple and later
scored on an RBI single by Delorme.
Liddy did not surrender a hit through the first four innings. Sophomore
Sam Poegel (Long Prairie, Minn.) broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single
in the fifth. Singles by seniors Andy Vacek (Brownton, Minn.) and Matt Knakmuhs
(Walnut Grove, Minn.) then produced the Cougars only run.
The Huskies responded with their final two runs in the bottom of the
fifth. Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) doubled with one out, sophomore
Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) followed with an RBI triple and then scored on
a double by junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.).
Liddy, who missed all of last season due to an injury, picked up his first
victory since a May 16, 1999 decision over Keene State College in the Little
East Conference Tournament. He gave up just five singles in six innings, struck
out five and walked one. Junior Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) twirled a
scoreless, hitless seventh.
Freshman Eric Pokornowski (Cokato, Minn.) went the distance for the
Cougars, giving up ten hits, with four walks and one strikeout.
Toomey, Delorme and Gureckis each had two hits for USM. Poegel was the
lone Cougar repeat hitter.
Southern Maine will conclude its southern trip with a doubleheader against
Upper Iowa University on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Tarry Park in Fort Myers.
Senior Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Travis Ferrante (Portland,
Maine) are the scheduled starters for the Huskies.

Toomey, Southwick and Delorme Lead Huskies to Sweep of Warhawks
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) and sophomore
Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) each cracked game-winning three-run homers
and senior Todd Southwick (Nashua, N.H.) twirled seven strong innings to pace
the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, 4-1 and 9-0, in college baseball action Monday
afternoon at Tarry Park.
The Huskies have won four straight to improve their record to 5-4 on the
season. The Warhawks dipped to 6-4.
USM took an early lead in the first game on a second inning sacrifice fly
by junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.), but the Warhawks answered with an
unearned run in the fourth.
Freshman Pat McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) started the Huskies rally with a
one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Shaun Richardson
(Kennebunk, Maine) worked a walk off Warhawks' freshman reliever Colin Kuecker
(Sun Prairie, Wis.), and Toomey followed with a three-run shot to right-center
to end the game.
Southwick was masterful for the Huskies, allowing only one unearned run on
four hits to pick up his third victory of the season. He struck out five and
did not walk a batter in a route-going performance.
In the second game, the Huskies broke open a scoreless game with five runs
in the sixth inning. Richardson reached base on an infield error leading off.
Toomey followed with a single, and Delorme unloaded his second home run of the
season over the left field fence off freshman southpaw Adam Haried (Stoughton,
Wis.). The Huskies added two more runs on a double by sophomore Paul Tedesco
(East Boston, Mass.), a single by freshman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.),
three stolen bases and another Warhawk error.
Senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) singled in two runs in the
seventh, Tedesco had an RBI double and senior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine)
added a pinch-hit RBI single to push the Huskies' lead to 9-0.
Freshman Michael Caggiano (Augusta, Maine) made his first collegiate
start, allowing just three singles in 3.1 scoreless innings. He was relieved in
the fourth by junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine), who hurled 2.2 innings of
shutout ball to pick up his second win of the season. Sophomore Erik Carlson
(Portland, Maine) pitched a scoreless seventh.
Toomey continued his torrid early-season hitting for Southern Maine,
banging out four hits on the day. Delorme, Tedesco and Marshall each had two
hits in the second game.
Southern Maine will play the University of Minnesota Morris on Tuesday at
10:00 a.m. at Tarry Park in Fort Myers. Sophomore Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine)
is scheduled to start on the mound for the Huskies.

Huskies Rally Twice to Defeat Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Calvin
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies came from
behind in each game Saturday afternoon to defeat the University of Wisconsin-
Stevens Point Pointers, 10-5, and the Calvin College Knights (Grand Rapids,
Mich.), 5-4, in college baseball action at Tarry Park.
The Huskies improved their record to 3-4 for the season. The Pointers
dipped to 8-3 while the Knights are 3-4.
Junior Alden Pelletier (Sanford, Maine) picked up the win in relief for
the Huskies against Wisconsin-Stevens Point, hurling 1.2 scoreless innings. He
allowed three hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Senior Jason Dority's (Winterport, Maine) three-run double in the bottom
of the first put the Huskies ahead 3-2. Junior Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.)
followed with an RBI single for a 4-2 margin. Sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg
Falls, Vt.) singled in a run in the second inning and later scored on the front
end of a double-steal.
The Pointers closed to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but USM
quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run single
by senior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.), an RBI single by Gureckis and a
sacrifice fly by Dority gave Southern Maine a 10-4 margin. The Huskies also
stole four bases in the inning and eight bases overall.
Curcuru's two-run double in the first inning gave Southern Maine a quick
early lead against Calvin, but the Knights took a 4-2 lead with three in the
fifth. Back to back doubles by Toomey and Delorme got one back for USM in the
sixth.
After Gureckis drew a one-out walk in the seventh, freshman pinch-hitter
Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) doubled him in to tie the game. Freshman Colin
Loveless (South Paris, Maine) then came through with a ground ball single up the
middle to score Marshall with the go-ahead run, 5-4. Loveless also made two
outstanding catches in center field in the bottom of the seventh to help
preserve the victory.
Senior Todd Southwick (Nashua, N.H.) benefited from Loveless' defensive
prowess, setting the Knights down in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick
up his second win of the season. Southwick pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless
one-hit relief, with one walk and two strikeouts
Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) and Delorme each had four hits on the
day for the Huskies, while Curcuru had four RBI.
After a day off Sunday, Southern Maine will resume its spring trip
schedule on Monday, taking on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in an 11:00
a.m. doubleheader at Tarry Park in Fort Myers.

Tommies Sweep Huskies
Pat Toomey Sets USM Career Assists Record
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of St. Thomas Tommies swept a
doubleheader from the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 19-5 and 11-6 (11
innings), in college baseball action Friday evening at Tarry Park.
The Huskies dropped their fourth straight to dip to 1-4 on the season.
The Tommies have won four in a row to improve to 10-2. St. Thomas, the NCAA
Division III national runner-up the past two seasons, was ranked number two in
the American Baseball Coaches Association preseason poll. Southern Maine was
ranked number five in the ABCA poll.
The lone bright spot for Southern Maine was senior shortstop Pat Toomey
(Medford, Mass.) who established a new school record for career assists,
recording two in the first game and seven in the second game to give him 442,
breaking the record of 433 held by former USM second baseman/shortstop Jim
Broughton (1989-1992).
In the first game, sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) cracked a
two-run homer in the third inning, and fellow sophomore Paul Tedesco (East
Boston, Mass.) blasted a three-run shot in the fifth to rally USM to a 5-5 tie.
The wheels fell off for the Huskies in the bottom of the sixth, however,
as St. Thomas combined nine hits, four walks, two hit batters and one Husky
error for 14 runs in the inning.
St. Thomas jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage in the second game, but
the Huskies put six runs on the board in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Junior
Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) walked with the bases loaded and junior Pete
L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) and seniors Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) and Shaun
Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) each singled in a run. Toomey capped the six-run
outburst with a two-run double.
Tommies' sophomore Tom Carroll (Sioux City, Iowa), who had six hits on the
evening, singled in the tying run in the top of the seventh to force extra
innings. An RBI single by senior Tony Wolverton (Fairmont, Minn.) and a bases
loaded triple by sophomore Matt Buzzell (Rochester, Minn.) in the top of the
11th inning sealed the Huskies fate, as St. Thomas erupted for five runs and the
victory.
Southern Maine will play two games on Saturday, taking on the University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 10:00 a.m. and, in a schedule change, Calvin
College (Grand Rapids, Mich.) at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Tarry
Park in Fort Myers. Freshmen Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and Jason
Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) are the scheduled starters for the Huskies.

Profs Sweep Huskies, 10-7, 11-0
Fort Myers, Fla. -- Senior Doug Scott (Oakland, N.J.) rapped out six
hits and classmate Pat Vengenock (Salem, N.J.) pitched a three-hit shutout as
the Rowan University Profs swept a doubleheader from the University of Southern
Maine Huskies, 10-7 and 11-0, in college baseball action Thursday evening at
Tarry Park.
The Huskies are now 1-2 on the season while the Profs are 7-3.
Southern Maine jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first game. Senior
Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) led off the game with his first career home
run. Senior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) followed with a single, and senior Jody
Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) belted his second home run of the season for the
three-run margin.
Rowan rallied to tie the score in the third and took the lead for good in
the fourth on a two-run single by junior Mike Braender (Hamilton, N.J.) and an
RBI single by junior Bob Dacieno (Franklinville, N.J.).
USM narrowed the margin to 6-5 on a fielder's choice RBI by Curcuru and
sophomore Paul Tedesco's (East Boston, Mass.) RBI double, but a solo homer by
freshman Jim Starkey (Dover, Del.) and sophomore Gerald Errickson's (Buena,
N.J.) two-run triple in the fifth put the game away for the Profs.
Sophomore Craig Waggner (Howell, N.J.) went the route for the victory,
scattering ten hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Vengenock held the Huskies to just three hits in the second game, walking
one and striking out four in a complete game performance. Freshman catcher Pat
McDonough (Windham, Maine) had the Huskies' only extra-base hit, a double in the
fifth inning. USM's four pitchers were plagued by ten walks in the game.
Senior Travis Davis' (Woodbury, N.J.) solo homer in the second gave Rowan
all the runs it would need. Junior Tim Staszewski (Collingswood, N.J.) followed
with a two-run single and the Profs coasted home with the win.
Southern Maine will play a doubleheader against the University of St.
Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.), last year's NCAA Division III national runner-up, on
Friday starting at 4:00 p.m. Mark Gunning (Winslow, Maine) and Mark Russell
(Arlington, Mass.) are scheduled to start on the mound for the Huskies.

USM Huskies Open Season With 12-3 Win Over Macalester
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine pounded out 16
hits, including three home runs, and senior right-hander Todd Southwick (Nashua,
N.H.) scattered five hits over 7.1 innings as the Huskies opened their 2001
season with a 12-3 victory over the Macalester College (St. Paul, Minn.) Scots
Wednesday evening.
Southwick did not allow a run until the eighth inning while giving up just
five singles and two walks. He struck out eight. Two of the three runs he
allowed were unearned.
USM nursed a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning courtesy of an RBI double by
sophomore Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) in the first inning and a solo
homer in the sixth inning from sophomore DH Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.).
The Huskies exploded for four runs in the seventh on freshman Colin
Loveless' (South Paris, Maine) solo home, an RBI double by senior Pat Toomey

Macalester made things interesting by scoring three runs in the top of the
eighth. The first run came home on an RBI single by junior Andy Odegaard (New
Brighton, Minn.), and last two runs came in on a USM throwing error.
Senior Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine), who had four hits in the game,
ignited a six-run USM rally in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.
After a Toomey single and a walk to Delorme loaded the bases, senior Jody
Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass.) hit a grand slam homer. Junior Craig Gureckis
(Nashua, N.H.) closed out the rally with an RBI single.
Freshman starter Scott Bell (Selah, Wash.) took the loss for the Scots.
Southern Maine will play a doubleheader against Rowan University on
Thursday starting at 4:00 p.m. Sophomore Pat Liddy (Farmington, Maine) and
freshman Travis Ferrante (Portland, Maine) are the slated starters for the

USM Huskies Name Baseball Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.), senior center
fielder Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) and senior pitcher Todd Southwick
(Nashua, N.H.) have been named captains for the 2001 University of Southern
Maine Huskies baseball team. Veteran head coach Ed Flaherty made the
announcement.
Richardson and Southwick are captains for the first time in their USM
careers. Last season Toomey shared the captain's duties with Denny Webber and
Shaun McKenna.
Toomey, a fourth-year starter in the infield, will handle shortstop duties
for the Huskies. He hit .355 last season, second -best on the squad, with three
home runs and 34 RBI. Toomey also stole a team-leading 29 bases, the fourth-
highest single-season total in the program's history.
He brings a .361 career batting average with seven home runs and 107
career RBI into the 2001 season. His 189 career base hits and 144 career runs
scored are each good for eighth on the Huskies all-time career lists. His 69
career stolen bases ranks fourth all-time, while his 427 career assists trails
only Jim Broughton's mark of 433.
Toomey has been named to the All-Little East Conference second team at
shortstop for the past two seasons. He was chosen to the second team at second
base for the 1998 season. He was selected to the All-New England third team at
shortstop for both the 1999 and 2000 seasons, and was chosen to play in the
NEIBA Division III vs. Junior College All-Star game last spring. He was also
named to the 2000 NCAA Division III New England Regional All-Tournament team.
The versatile Richardson will again patrol centerfield for the Huskies.
He successfully made the switch to the outfield last year after playing in the
infield for his first two USM campaigns. He hit .327 last season with 32 RBI
and tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. Richardson also swiped 23 bases,
second-highest on the squad. His 44 career thefts is eighth highest in school
history.
Richardson was named to the 2000 Little East Conference All-Tournament
team as an outfielder. He received the same honor in the 1999 tournament at
second base, as well as being chosen as the 1999 LEC Tournament's Most
Outstanding Player.
Southwick will again be in the Huskies' starting rotation. He started
eight games last season, compiling a 3-3 record with a 4.74 ERA in 13 overall
appearances. The crafty right-hander pitched 53.0 innings last year, with 28
strikeouts and just 13 walks, and did not allow a home run. He was selected as
the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 3-9, 2000.
"We have three good captains," said Flaherty, who begins his 16th season
as coach of the Huskies with a 445-183 (.709) career record. "All three have
played in the regionals and the world series. They are each quiet by nature, but
do all the things necessary to lead the team by example.
"Pat can be fiery at times when game situations demand it and the kids seem to
rally behind him. Shaun always plays hard, whether in a game or in practice,
and made the switch from the infield to the outfield to help the team last
season without ever complaining. (Southwick) came into preseason practice in
unbelievable shape and has developed into one of our mainstays on the mound."
The Huskies open their 2001 season Wednesday night (March 21) with a 6:00
p.m. game against Macalester College (St. Paul, Minn.) at Fort Myers, Florida.
Southern Maine will play 12 games in eight days during its annual spring trip to
Florida. Weather permitting, USM will open its home schedule with a
doubleheader April 4 against Bridgewater State.
The remainder of the Huskies' Florida trip includes a doubleheader March
22, versus Rowan (4:00 p.m.); a doubleheader March 23, versus St. Thomas
(Minn.) (4:00 p.m.); March 24, versus Wisconsin-Stevens Point (10:00 a.m.) and
Frostburg (1:00 p.m.); a doubleheader March 26, versus Wisconsin-Whitewater
(11:00 a.m.); March 27, versus Minnesota-Morris (10:00 a.m.) and a doubleheader
March 28, versus Upper Iowa (8:00 a.m.).
Southern Maine opens the northern portion of its schedule March 30 with a
single game at Wheaton College (3:00 p.m.). The Huskies then travel to Western
Connecticut State University March 31 for a Little East Conference doubleheader
(12:00 p.m.).
In April, the schedule includes April 1, at UMass Boston (1:00 p.m.);
April 4, Bridgewater State (DH/2:00 p.m.); April 6, at Colby-Sawyer (3:00
p.m.); April 7, Rhode Island College (DH/12:00 p.m.); April 8, Wheaton (1:00
p.m.); April 10, Bowdoin, (3:30 p.m.); April 12, Brandeis (3:00 p.m.); April
14, Plymouth State (DH/12:00 p.m.); April 17 at Endicott (3:30 p.m.); April
18, St. Joseph's (3:00 p.m.); April 19 at Salem State (3:00 p.m.); April 21,

The May schedule includes May 1, Framingham State (3:00 p.m.); May 2 at
Babson (3:00 p.m.); and May 5 at Keene State (DH/12:00).
The Little East Conference tournament begins May 8 with a pair of single-
elimination first round games. The two winners will join two teams that
received first round byes for a four-team, double-elimination tournament May 10-
12 to determine the conference champion. The LEC tournament champion receives
an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
