With the win, the Warriors improve to 37-7 and stay alive to play seventh- seeded Husson University on Saturday (11:00 a.m.). The 6-foot southpaw, who struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings, allowed just two runs on five hits and did not yield a walk. Junior left-hander Wes Dutton (Waterbury, Conn.) and junior right-hander Matt Fontaine (Cranston, Rhode Island) combined for two scoreless inning of relief for the Warriors to close out the game. Both managed to survive bases- loaded jams. Southern Maine junior left-hander Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) took the loss going 3.2 innings. Henry allowed five runs, only one earned, on six hits and four walks. Sophomore Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.) allowed two unearned runs in 0.2 inning. Senior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) held the Warriors scoreless over the final 3.2 innings allowing just two hits. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first inning plating runs on the first of five USM errors and an RBI single from junior Melvin Castillo (Danbury, Conn.). The Huskies answered back in the top of the second to trim the deficit to 2-1 following a leadoff solo home run by senior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine). Pikeís home run was his team leading 11th of the season. The score remain unchanged until the bottom of the fourth when the Warriors tagged Henry for three unearned runs on three hits, two walks and an error. Senior Andrew Magliola (East Haven, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk followed by a sacrifice fly by junior Travis Bass (West Hartford, Conn.). Sophomore Jim Schult (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) plated the Warriorsí third run with double down the left field line. Eastern Connecticut added two more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from junior John Parke (Middlefield, Conn.) and an RBI single by Bass to lead the Huskies 7-1. Both runs were unearned. After a scoreless sixth inning, Henry led off the seventh inning with a home run to the right field, to cut the lead to 7-2, but Gilblair closed out the inning with a pair of ground outs and his career high 14th strikeout before leaving the game. The Huskies threatened in the eighth and ninth innings loading the bases, but were unable to capitalize. In the eight, senior Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine) led off the inning with a double and a pair of walks to junior Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) and Pike loaded the bases with one out. Dutton escaped the jam getting an inning-ending double play. In the ninth, Fontaine issued a walk to open the inning, then fanned two batters. NCAA Division III New England Regional - Game Eight Trinity Shuts Out Southern Maine 6-0
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior right-hander Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield, Mass.) fired a seven-hit shutout as the third-seeded Trinity College Bantams blanked the second-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies, 6-0, in a winners' bracket game of the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament Friday morning at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn. The Huskies fall to 36-8 and will face top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in an elimination game this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.. Bayer scattered seven singles and four walks to remain undefeated and improving his record to 11-0. Bayer, who struck out four, battled his way out of a first-inning jam with the bases loaded after issuing just his 15th and 16th walks of the season, forcing a fly ball to right field for the third out. USM senior right-hander Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) absorbed his first loss of the season for the Huskies, allowing six runs (all earned) on 12 hits and two walks, in 7.2 innings. Therrian's record stands at 9-1. With both pitchers zeroed in, the Bantams broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) cranked an RBI single, the last of three consecutive two-out singles for the Bantams. After getting a pair of ground outs to open the fifth, Therrian yielded singles to sophomore Alexander Rokicki (Truro, Mass.) and senior Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.) before Graham plated the run. The Huskies threatened in the top of the sixth with two runners on via singles by junior Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine), but Bayer forced a fly out and a ground out to end the threat. Trinity padded its lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles from junior Jack Abbott (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Robert Martin (Lowell, Mass.). USM had runners on first and third in the seventh following a leadoff single by senior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H.), two wild pitches and a walk to senior Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine), but Bayer came through again for the Bantams with a strikeout to end the inning. Trinity scored its final three runs of the game in the eighth. The Bantams scored all three of their runs with two outs as Killeen roped a two-run double to right-center field to drive in Abbott and senior Steve Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.). Little East Conference Tournament - Game Five Keene State Eliminates Southern Maine 7-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) hit two home runs and had five RBI as third-seeded Keene State College defeated the top-seeded and nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine, 7-2, Saturday in an elimination game of the Little East Conference Baseball Championship tournament being played at the USM Baseball Stadium. The win was the second straight for the Owls and moves them into the championship round against Eastern Connecticut State University. The Owls, now 25-15, need to defeat the second-seeded Warriors on the next game Saturday, and the "if necessary game" on Sunday, to take the title. The Huskies dropped their second straight game in the four-team, double- elimination event after opening the tournament with a win over the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Huskies slip to 35-7 overall and now must wait word on a possible at-large NCAA tournament berth. Overshadowed by Doyon's power display was the strong starting pitching by KSC junior right-hander Ben Sonberg (Bow, N.H.). Sonberg limited the potent USM attack to four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings to improve his record to 5-2. He fanned four. USM took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) hit Sonberg's second pitch of the game out of the park. Doyon quickly erased the deficit when he greeted sophomore reliever Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.) with a drive over the right-center field fence for a grand slam homer. USM freshman left-handed starter Brennan Perry (Hampden, Maine) walked the first three KSC batters to load the bases before departing in favor of Hahn. Perry was tagged with his first loss of the season after three wins. Hahn settled down after the Doyon homer to shut down the Owls until the fifth. Sophomore Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) drove in senior Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) with a two-out single through the right side. Chevalier had doubled and advanced to third on a fly ball. Keene State added a single run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by senior Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown), and in the seventh on Doyon's solo blast down the left field line that ended Hahn's day. Hahn went 6.1 innings in long relief allowing seven hits, two walks and four runs while fanning four. USM got one run back in the eighth on a solo homer to right-center field by sophomore Mike Eaton (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill). Doyon, Perkins and DiPrato each had two hits for Keene State. Perry finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Eastern Connecticut led 7-1 after five innings, before USM added a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI grounder by senior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). USM Tops Little East Conference Preseason Poll
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine baseball team has been picked as the team to beat in the 2009 Little East Conference coaches preseason poll released today following a vote of the league's head coaches. The Huskies garnered five first place votes and 61 points to edge out Eastern Connecticut State University and defending champion Keene State College for the favorite's spot. Eastern Connecticut was second in the poll with two first place votes and 55 points, followed by Keene State with 52 points and one first place vote. Rhode Island College was fourth in the poll with 39 points, followed by the University of Massachusetts Boston with 31 points. Rounding out the poll were Western Connecticut State University with 24 points, Plymouth State University with 15 points and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 11 points. A pivotal, early-season LEC doubleheader will feature Southern Maine at Eastern Connecticut on the opening weekend of conference play March 28. One major change in the Little East Conference this spring will be the postseason championship tournament. This year, all eight teams will play in four best-of-three opening round series the weekend of May 2-3. The winners advance to the four-team, double-elimination finals on May 7-9. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. Veteran head coach Ed Flaherty returns 17 players from last year's squad that finished 36-14 overall and reached the finals of the NCAA Regional tournament before losing to eventual national champion Trinity College. The Huskies tied Eastern Connecticut for second place in the Little East Conference during the regular season with an 11-3 record and reached the finals before bowing to top-seeded Keene State. Southern Maine opens its 40-game 2009 season with a trip to Long Island, New York, on March 7-8 to play SUNY-Farmingdale and Suffolk University. The Huskies will play 16 games on the road before hosting Bridgewater State College in their home opener at the USM Baseball Stadium on April 2.
