of the season.
The score remained at a stalemate through the rest of regulation. USM
junior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) kept the Owls off the
scoreboard making 11 saves in the game, including five in the second half.

USM Advances To Little East Conference Semifinal, Downs Salem State 2-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.) scored the
game-winning goal and assisted on the equalizer to lead the fourth-seeded
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the fifth-seeded Salem
State College Vikings Tuesday afternoon in a first round game of the 2008 Little
East Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.
With the win, the Huskies advance to the semifinals of the LEC tournament
and will face the winner of the Keene State College/Bridgewater State first
round playoff game on Thursday at a time and place yet to be determined. The
loss concludes the Vikings' season at 9-8.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Southern Maine was forced to
rally notching both of its goals in the second half. Salem State sophomore
defender Megan Closson (Boothbay Harbor, Maine/Boothbay) put the Vikings ahead
1-0 early in the opening half. Closson rocketed in a shot from the top of the
circle following a neatly played pass from senior defender Julie Brooks (East
Bridgewater, Mass.). Brooks received the ball on a penalty corner and then
found Closson at the top of the circle playing the ball from right to left. The
Vikings were able to hold the Huskies at bay through the opening half to lead
1-0 at the break.
The Huskies roared back to tie the score in the 46th minute when USM junior
forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) notched her team-leading 11th goal
of the season. Albert scored from close range on a well-executed give-and-go
with Lowe down the left side of the field.
The score remained locked over the next 21 minutes before Lowe barreled her
way to the game-winning goal with a brilliant individual effort. Lowe scrapped
her way to a loose ball just over half field, then quickly dribbled her way
through the Salem State defense before driving in her 10th goal of the season in
the 67th minute.
Salem State threatened over the final three minutes earning two of its 13
penalty corners in the game in the final minute of action, but were unable to
come away with an equalizer. USM junior Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine)
made a sprawling save in the final minute of action to preserve the win for the
Huskies and finished with four saves in the game. Salem State sophomore

goal of the Huskies. Sophomore forward Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass.) tallied
her team-leading seventh goal of the season when she collected her own rebound
off of a save and tucked the ball past a crowd of USM defenders in the 46th

Southern Maine Outlasts Westfield State 4-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Alyssa Kraus (Standish, Maine/Bonny
Eagle) notched the game-winning goal in the 66th minute to lift the University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-3 win over the Westfield State College Owls in
a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Paula Hodgdon
Field in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the Little

1-3 in the conference.
After goals from Kraus, senior forward Caitlin Albert (Gorham,
Maine/Scarborough) and freshman back Christine Hill (Morrill, Maine/Belfast),
the Huskies held a 3-1 lead over the Owls late in the second half.
However, Westfield State was able to rally to knot the score at 3-3 on the
strength of freshman forward Jessi Gould (Canton, Mass.). Gould, who notched
the Owls lone goal of the first half off of an assist from junior forward Kate
Moss (Auburn, Mass.), completed the hat trick scoring back-to-back, unassisted
goals in the 60th and 66th minutes.
Gould's two second-half goals came as Westfield State unleashed an
offensive flurry over a ten-minute span. The Owls uncorked 11 of their 23
shots, and seven of their 15 penalty corners, between the 56th and 66th minutes.
Southern Maine was able to rebound as Kraus responded quickly to Gould's
game-tying effort, scoring her third goal of the season just 10 seconds after
the Owls had clawed their way back.
The Huskies were able to limit the damage by the Owls during that span due
to the outstanding play of junior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine). Hill made several sprawling saves during the Owls push and finished the
game with 15 saves. Sophomore back Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence)
and freshman back Heidi Swett (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) each made a defensive
save in the second half. Westfield State freshman goalkeeper Amanda McCarthy
(Franklin, Mass.) played solidly for the Owls making key defensive clears and
