USM Second at Rain-Shortened Husson Invitational

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior captain James "JJ" Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais
HS) posted an even par 72 to take medalist honors and lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies golf team to a second place finish at the rain-shortened
Husson College Invitational this past weekend. The tournament was the final
event of the Huskies' 2005 fall season.
Played at the Penobscot Valley CC in Orono, the scheduled two-day event was
shortened to one round due to heavy rains late Saturday night and Sunday. The
tournament was originally scheduled to be played October 9-10, but had to be
rescheduled due to heavy rains that weekend.
Frost covered the challenging Penobscot Valley course at even par in
Saturday's opening round to hold a one-stroke lead over Ross McGee of Husson,
and two shots over the Husson duo of Lance Libby and John Ellis after 18 holes.
Overnight rains into Sunday forced tournament officials to cancel Sunday's final
round.
The medalist honor was the fourth of the season for Frost. He previously
had the low score at the UNE Invitational, the Bowdoin Invitational and the USM
Fall Classic. He also tied for medalist honors at the State Championship, but
lost the individual championship on a tiebreaker.
For the Huskies, junior Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) was seventh
overall with a 79. Junior George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) carded an 83,
freshman C.J. Nappi (Portland, Maine) came home in 86 and sophomore Greg
Mitchell (Durham, Maine/Brunswick HS) fired an 87.
Husson took the team title with a four-man aggregate score of 297. Southern
Maine was second at 320 followed by St. Joseph's College at 329, Thomas College
at 338 and the University of Maine at Presque Isle at 352.
