Loss and Mitchell Selected as Southern Maine Golf Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Greg Mitchell (Durham, Maine/Brunswick) and junior
Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill./Westminster) of the University of Southern Maine
Huskies golf team have been named captains for the 2007 season. Head coach
Reggie Grant made the announcement.
Mitchell averaged 84.1 strokes in eight rounds of competition in 2006,
recording a season-low of 77 twice at the University of Southern Maine Fall
Classic. In his career, Mitchell has averaged 82.6 strokes per round, including
an outstanding 81.9 stroke average in 2005. In 2005, Mitchell recorded his
career best round, carding a 74 at the Bowdoin College Invitational in
Brunswick, Maine.
"Greg is a fourth-year player that has shown a willingness to work at his
game and the maturity to recognize that regular practice is the main component
to better results," noted Grant. "A leader through example, Greg is a gritty
kid with moderate natural ability, but a lot of tenacity and work ethic."
In 19 career rounds played, Loss, who is also a member of the USM men's ice
hockey team, has averaged a solid 83.4 strokes. In 2006, he averaged 82.3
strokes over 13 rounds and recorded a career-best 78 twice for the Huskies.
Loss first posted his career best round with a 78 in the USM Fall Classic before
repeating the performance at the Husson College Invitational.
"Ben has improved more than any other USM player," said Grant. "As a
first-year player, he was in jeopardy of not making the team, but once he was
given the final spot, he took advantage of the opportunity and went to work.
Originally recruited to USM as a top-flight hockey player, Ben has caught the
golf bug and is a leader among his peers. He has a solid future in the game as
his golf skills are still emerging."
Southern Maine starts the 2007 fall campaign on September 5 at the
University of New England Invitational at the Cape Arundel Golf Course
(Kennebunkport, Maine). The Huskies continue their September schedule with
stops at the Bowdoin Invitational at the Brunswick Country Club on September 8-
9, the Terrier Invitational hosted by Thomas College at the Waterville Country
Club on September 11, the Maine State Tournament at Natanis Golf Club
(Vassalboro, Maine) on September 14-15, the UMaine Farmington Invitational at
Belgrade Lakes Golf Club on September 16, the Sidd Farr Invitational at the
Waterville Country Club on September 22, and the Saint Joseph's College John
Queenan Memorial at Point Sebago Golf Club (Casco, Maine) on September 25.
In October, Southern Maine hosts two events, including the USM Fall Classic
on October 1 and the Southern Maine Cup on October 5. Both events will be at
the Sable Oaks Country Club. The Huskies participate in the Husson College
Invitational at the Penobscot Valley Country Club (Orono, Maine) on October 7-8
before concluding the fall season at the New England Intercollegiate Golf
Championships on October 22-23 at the Captain Brewster Golf Club in Brewster,
Mass.
