GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine), Jon Letendre (Rumford, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) have been named captains of the 2009 University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s cross-country team. Fifth-year head coach Scott Hutchinson made the announcement as the Huskies prepare for their upcoming season. Downing, Letendre and Richardson will help lead a veteran laden Huskies squad that finished second in the Little East Conference (LEC) championship in 2008 and finished in the top ten at both the ECAC Championships and the NCAA Division III New England Regional. The Huskies return 13 runners from last season including 2008 LEC Runner of the Year senior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and 2008 LEC Rookie of the Year Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.). “We have a great deal of talented and dedicated runners,” commented Hutchinson. “Nick, Jon and Justin each are committed to achieving the best possible results for themselves and the team and will make excellent leaders throughout the season. Richardson and Downing both earned 2008 All-New England Alliance honors finishing in the top 10 of the New England Alliance championship race, while Richardson also raced his way to All-Little East Conference honors finishing in the top seven of the LEC Championship. Letendre was a key contributor to the Huskies as a junior, finishing as one of USM’s top six runners in several races throughout the season. Letendre had a season-best sixth place finish at the University of New England Invitational, helping Southern Maine to the win.
