Tyler Jasud Named LEC Runner of the Year
Alex Gomes Picked as Top Rookie
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and
freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine men’s
cross country team captured two of the major, end-of-the-season awards that were
announced this afternoon by the Little East Conference.
Jasud was named the Runner of the Year while Gomes was selected as the
Rookie Runner of the Year. University of Massachusetts Dartmouth head coach Jon
Hird was selected by his peers as the Coach of the Year. Jonathan Harper,
commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced the awards.
Jasud becomes the second straight USM competitor to be named the Little
East’s top runner since the award’s inception in 2007 (Curtis Wheeler). Jasud
advanced to the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships, where he
nearly earned All-American honors after completing the 8-kilometer course in a
time of 25 minutes, 5 seconds to place 43rd among 278 competitors. The All-New
England pick qualified for the NCAA Championships as an at-large individual
selection based upon an 11th-place finish at the NCAA New England Regional
Championships.
During the recently completed cross country season, Jasud captured three
individual championships, including 2008 the Little East Conference/New England
Alliance Championships. He covered the 8-kilometer course in a time of 25
minutes and 41.87 seconds to stand atop the conference individual standings. He
also was named the Little East Conference Male Runner of the Week five times on
the campaign.
Gomes was seventh among freshman runners at the 2008 NCAA Division III
Championships after posting a time of 25:36 on the 8-kilometer course. The
Peabody, Mass., resident finished 97th overall in the individual standings to
cap a stellar rookie campaign. He was the first freshman to cross the finish
line at the New England Division III Regional Championships, earning All-England
recognition with his 16th place result.
The top finishing rookie at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance
Championships, Gomes also was the top rookie finisher at the Maine State
Championship, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational and
University of New England Invitational. He was selected the Little East
Conference Rookie Runner of the Week five times.
Southern Maine finished the season with a ninth place finish at the NCAA
Regional Championship, a top ten results at the ECAC Division III Championship
and runner-up finishes at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance and
State of Maine Championships. The Huskies also won three meets during the
campaign.

Jasud, Gomes Race Well at NCAA National Championship
HANOVER, Ind. -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and
freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine men's
cross country team each posted a Top 100 finish Saturday at the NCAA Division
III National Championship held at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.
Jasud finished 43rd among the 278 finishers while Gomes came home in 97th
place overall. Jasud covered the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25
minutes, 5.35 seconds. His time was less than six seconds behind the final All-
American spot (35th), and the 43rd place finish matched the program's best
finish turned in last year by Curtis Wheeler. Gomes posted a time of 25:36.90
and was the seventh finisher among the first-year runners competing.
Junior Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College was the individual winner posting a
time of 24:22.03. Cortland (NY) State took the team title with 80 points
followed by North Central College with 115 and Williams College with 129 points.

Jasud, Gomes Sweep LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- For the fourth time this season, the University of
Southern Maine men's cross country team has swept the weekly Little East
Conference awards that were announced Monday afternoon.
Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) was named the Male
Runner of the Week and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) was selected as the
Male Rookie of the Week in recognition of their outstanding performances at the
NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship meet last Saturday. The duo
had previously swept the weekly awards on September 22, October 20 and November
3. Overall, each has won their respective award six times this fall.
Jasud came across the finish line in 11th place among the 331 finishers at
the regional qualifier after completing the eight-kilometer course in 26
minutes, 32.4 seconds, followed by Gomes in 16th place with a time of 26:39.1.
Both received All-New England recognition for placing among the top 35
finishers.
Jasud and Gomes were among the 56 individual qualifiers announced
yesterday for this coming Saturday's NCAA Division III National Championship
race hosted by Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. This is the first time in
the history of the USM men's cross country program that more than one competitor
has qualified for the NCAA national championship race. The past two years,
former standout Curtis Wheeler represented the Huskies at the national
championship race. The only other individual to qualify was Joey Luchini during
his freshman season in 1997.

Jasud, Gomes Are In NCAA National Championship Race
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and
freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine men’s
cross country team will be among the 280 competitors that step to the starting
line next Saturday (November 22) at the 2008 NCAA Division III National
Championship.
The entire NCAA field of 32 teams and 56 individual qualifiers was
announced Sunday afternoon. The national championship race will be hosted by
Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.
Jasud and Gomes qualified as individual competitors based upon their
finishes at yesterday’s NCAA New England Regional event held in Williamstown,
Mass. Jasud came across the finish line in 11th place after completing the
8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 32.4 seconds, followed by Gomes in 16th place
with a time of 26:39.1. Both received All-New England recognition for placing

Southern Maine Ninth at NCAA Regional Championship
Jasud, Gomes Finish in Top 16
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Paced by junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Moun-
tain Valley) and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.), the University of
Southern Maine men’s cross country finished ninth among the 49 teams competing
at the 2008 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship on Saturday at
the Mt. Greylock High School course in Williamstown, Mass.
Jasud came across the finish line in 11th place after completing the 8,000-
meter course in 26 minutes, 32.4 seconds, followed by Gomes in 16th place with a
time of 26:39.1. Pending the selection of at-large teams for next weekend’s
NCAA National Championship, both have an excellent chance of qualifying for the
event as an individual. The top seven individuals not on qualifying teams will
go to the championship as individual qualifiers. The NCAA will announce the
field of 32 teams and 56 individuals Sunday afternoon.
Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) was the third USM
runner across the line in 57th place with a time of 27:31.0. Senior Nick
Downing (Winthrop, Maine) and freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg
Academy) cracked the top 80 finishing 70th and 79th respectively. Downing had a
time of 27:49.8 and Even tripped the timer in 27:58.4. There were 331
finishers.
This is the third straight year, and fifth time in the past 12 seasons,
that the Huskies have finished in the top 10 at the regional meet. The Huskies
had a program-best seventh place finish last year and were 10th in 2006.
Perennial powerhouse Williams College, the host institution, placed five
runners in the top 15 to easily win the team title with 36 points. Amherst
College was a distance second with 122 points. Williams and Amherst earned the
two automatic team qualifying spots for next week’s national championship race.
Trinity College was third with 143 points, Brandeis University was fourth
with 158 and Bowdoin College rounds out the top five with 204 points. All three
will be under consideration for an at-large team berth. Southern Maine finished
with 233 points.
For the second straight year, Edgar Kosgey of Williams was the individual
winner. Kosgey, a junior, had a winning time of 25:52.7.

USM Posts First Top Ten Finish at ECAC Championship Since 1999
BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine men’s cross country
team finished 10th among 48 schools competing Saturday at the 2008 Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship run at Colt State
Park in Bristol, R.I.
Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) paced the Huskies with
a 35th place finish, covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27 minutes, 42
seconds.
Classmate Connor Bibb (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) was the second
USM runner to cross the line, finishing in 50th place with his time of 28:01.
Rookie Erich Neuts (Portland, Maine/Deering) was the team’s third finisher in
64th place, tripping the timer at 28:17.
Sophomore Jon Fulford (Kennebunk, Maine) was 93rd overall in 28:45, and
freshman John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) was 116th overall in 29:05 to round out USM’s
five scoring runners.
Williams College took the team title scoring 64 points. Keene State
College was runner-up with 100 points. Middlebury College (144), Oneonta (146)
and Vassar College (183) round out the top five teams.
Southern Maine finished with 354 points to place 10th, its best result in
the race since 1999 when it also placed 10th.
Adam Smith of St. Vincent College (Latrobe, Penn.) was the individual
winner with a time of 26:18.
Southern Maine closes its 2008 regular season next Saturday (November 15)
when it competes in the NCAA New England Regional Championship being held at Mt.
Greylock HS in Williamstown, Mass.

Jasud and Gomes Sweep LEC Weekly Awards

(Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the
University of Southern Maine men's cross country team have been recognized by
the Little East Conference for their outstanding performances.
Jasud was tabbed as the Male Runner of the Week and Gomes was picked as the
Male Rookie of the Week after their one-two finish at the Little East
Conference-New England Alliance Championships held Saturday in Westfield, Mass.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, made the
announcements Monday afternoon.
Jasud was previously recognized on September 15 and 22 and October 13 and
20. Gomes took Rookie honors on September 6 and 22 and October 6 and 20.
At last weekend's NEA-LEC meet, Jasud took the individual title covering
the 8,000-meter Stanley Park course in a time of 25 minutes, 41.87 seconds.
Gomes was less than three seconds back with his time of 25:44.79. Both received
All-Alliance (top 20) and All-Little East (top seven) accolades for their
performances.
Southern Maine battled nationally-ranked Keene State College for the team
titles, but Keene State's depth proved decisive for a 12-point victory (32-44)
in the Alliance race, and an eight-point margin (27-35) in the Little East
scoring.
The New England Alliance race includes schools from the Little East
Conference (LEC) and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Each conference also scores a conference champion from the race.
The Huskies will travel to Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I., this Saturday
to participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III
Championship.

and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) finished one-two to pace the University
of Southern Maine men's cross country team to a second place finish at the 2008
New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships run Saturday at
Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
Southern Maine battled nationally-ranked Keene State College for the team
titles, but Keene State's depth proved decisive for a 12-point victory in the
Alliance race, and an eight-point margin in the Little East scoring.
This is the second straight year that a USM runner has won the race. Jasud
follows in the foot steps of Nick Wheeler and Curtis Wheeler who were co-
champions last year. Jasud covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25
minutes, 41.87 seconds. Gomes was less than three seconds behind, finishing in
25:44.79.
Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) was the third USM
runner to cross the line, coming in seventh overall with a time of 26:00.48.
Senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) was 14th overall in 26:33.14, and freshman
Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was 22nd in 26:54.63. Jasud, Gomes,
Richardson and Downing all earned All-New England Alliance honors (top 20).
Jasud, Gomes and Richardson also picked up All-LEC honors (top seven).
Keene State captured the Alliance title with a score of 32 points followed
by Southern Maine with 44. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth was third
with 100 points. Fitchburg State College and host Westfield State College
finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with 129 and 149 points. Keene State
edge out Southern Maine, 27-35, in the Little East scoring with UMass Dartmouth
third with 75 points.
The New England Alliance race includes schools from the Little East
Conference (LEC) and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Each conference also scores a conference champion from the race.

Huskies Sweep LEC Men's XC Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's
cross country team have been recognized by the Little East Conference for their
outstanding performances last Saturday at the State of Maine Championships.
For the fourth time this fall, junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain
Valley) was named the LEC men's Runner of the Week. Freshman Alex Gomes
(Peabody, Mass.) was picked as the men's Rookie of the Week, also for the fourth
time this season. The awards were announced Tuesday by Jonathan Harper,
commissioner of the Little East Conference.
Jasud became the second straight USM runner to win the individual title at
the State meet, following Curtis Wheeler who won the 2007 race. Jasud covered
the 8,000-meter Twin Brook Complex (Cumberland, Maine) course in 25 minutes,
47.82 seconds to lead the field of 128 finishers. His time is one of the
fastest ever turned in on the 8,000-meter men's course which served as the site
for the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Regional Championships.
Gomes was the third USM runner, and first freshman in the field, to cross
the line coming home eighth with a time of 26:26.20.
Led by Jasud, junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) and
Gomes, Southern Maine finished second among the ten teams competing in the final
standings. Bowdoin College edged USM by eight points, 34-42, to win its fourth
consecutive team title.
The Huskies will take this weekend off and prepare for the Little East
Conference and New England Alliance Championships on November 1. The LEC/NEA
event will be hosted by Westfield (Mass.) State College.

Huskies Second at State Meet; Tyler Jasud Wins Individual Title
CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley)
of the University of Southern Maine won his third race of the season Saturday
taking the top spot at the 2008 Maine State Men's Cross Country Championship
held at the Twin Brook Complex in Cumberland, Maine.
Bowdoin College edged the Huskies by eight points, 34-42, for its fourth
consecutive team title. This was the Huskies second straight runner-up finish.
Bates College was third with 52 points, and Colby College finished fourth with
153.
Jasud covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25 minutes, 47.82 seconds
to finish nearly 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Thompson Ogilvie of Bowdoin.
Jasud's winning time was one of the fastest ever turned in on the men's 8,000-
meter course. Jasud's victory gave USM its second straight individual champion
following Curtis Wheeler's win last fall.
Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) was the second USM
runner across the line in fourth place with a time of 26:08.61. Freshman Alex
Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) came home in eighth place, just missing All-State honors
(top seven), with his time of 26:26.20. Senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine)
came in 13th place in 26:49.82 and junior JJ Forcella (Falmouth, Maine) was 17th
overall in 27:02.92.
After a week off, the Huskies will defend their Little East Conference and
New England Alliance championships on November 1. The race will be hosted by
Westfield (Mass.) State College.

Tyler Jasud Named Little East Conference Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this fall, University of Southern
Maine junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) has been named the
Little East Conference men's cross country Runner of the Week. Jonathan Harper,
commissioner for the Little East Conference, made the announcement Monday
afternoon.
Jasud was recognized for his outstanding effort at the NEIcAAA (New England
Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) New England Men's Cross Country
Championship held Saturday at Franklin Park in Boston. He had previously been
named LEC Runner of the Week on September 15 and September 22.
Jasud finished in 38th place among the 316 finishers at the meet that
features NCAA Division I, II and III teams from throughout the six-state region
with a time of 25 minutes, 29 seconds. He was the seventh Division III runner,
and first LEC competitor, to cross the line. Jasud cut more than two full
minutes off his 2007 time (27:57) and improved 129 places in the finishing
order.
Led by Jasud, the Huskies finished 24th among the 47 scoring teams in the
final team standings. The Huskies finished with 617 points.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell took the team title with 79 points.
The University of New Hampshire (89 points), Brown University (97), Dartmouth
College (192) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (196) round out the
top five teams. Senior Tim Ritchie of Boston College was the individual winner
in a time of 24:35.
Up next for the Huskies is the State of Maine Championships on Saturday
(2:00 p.m.) at Twin Brook in Cumberland, Maine.

Jasud Paces Huskies to 24th Place Finish at New England Championship

Association (NEIcAAA) New England Cross Country Championships held at Franklin
Park.
Jasud paced the Huskies to a 24th place finish in the team standings among
the 47 scoring teams. The University of Massachusetts Lowell took the team
title with 79 points. The University of New Hampshire (89 points), Brown
University (97), Dartmouth College (192) and the University of Massachusetts

USM's Alex Gomes Named LEC X-C Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this season, University of Southern
Maine freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) has been named the Little East
Conference men's cross country Rookie of the Week. The honor was announced
Monday afternoon by Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East.
Gomes helped the Huskies win their third meet of the fall campaign this
past Saturday at the Pop Crowell Invitational held at Gordon College (Wenham,
Mass.). The second USM runner to cross the finish line, Gomes placed eighth
overall among the 232 finishers in the race. He covered the five-mile distance
in a time of 27 minutes, 12 seconds. He had previously been named the LEC
Rookie of the Week on September 8 and September 22.
The Huskies travel to Franklin Park in Boston this Saturday (October 11) to
participate in the NEIcAAA New England Championships. The men's varsity race is
scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., followed by the sub-varsity race at 2:15 p.m.

USM Takes Team Title at Pop Crowell Invitational
WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine men's cross country won
its third event in four tries this season, taking home the team title Saturday
at the Pop Crowell Cross Country Invitational held at Gordon College in Wenham,
Mass.
The Huskies placed their first five finishers among the top 20 to amass 58
points. Westfield State College came in second with 82 points. Roger Williams
University (91), Gordon (136) and Massachusetts Maritime Academy (198) round out
the top five among the 24 teams competing.
USM had previously won the St. Joseph's Invitational (Sept. 6) and the
University of New England Invitational (Sept. 13) before a solid sixth-place
result at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational (Sept. 20).
Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) was the first USM
runner to cross the finish line. Jasud was third overall after covering the
five-mile course in 26 minutes, 43 seconds.
Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) was eighth overall in 27:12. Junior
Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) finished 13th in 27:20, and
classmate JJ Forcella (Falmouth, Maine) was in 15th place in 27:26. Junior Jon
Letendre (Rumford, R.I./LaSalle Academy) was the Huskies' fifth scoring runner,
placing 19th in 27:34.
Senior Clark Kevin of Roger Williams was the individual winner with a time
of 26:22. Senior Ryan Prescott of St. Joseph's College (Me.) was one second
behind in the runner-up spot.
Southern Maine will travel to Franklin Park in Boston next Saturday (11:00
a.m.) for the NEIcAAA New England Championships.

USM Sweeps LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's cross country
swept the Little East Conference weekly awards that were announced today by
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the conference.
For the second straight week, junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain
Valley) was named the Runner of the Week, and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody,
Mass.) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
Jasud made a strong bid to win his third consecutive race at the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, finishing in second place. Jasud
covered the five-mile UMD course in 25 minutes, 6 seconds, just two seconds
behind the race winner, Teddy Vrountas of Northeastern University.
Gomes, the LEC Rookie of the Week pick two weeks ago, had another strong
outing finishing in 14th place with a time of 25:28.
Led by Jasud and Gomes, the Huskies finished sixth in the final team
standings with 178 points. LEC rival Keene State College won the team title
with 85 points.
After a bye week, the Huskies will return to action on October 4 when they
travel to Wenham, Mass., to participate in the Pop Crowell Invitational at
Gordon College.

Huskies Finish Sixth at UMD Invitational
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Rumford,
Maine/Mountain Valley) turned in an impressive individual effort to lead the
University of Southern Maine men's cross country team to a sixth place finish
among the 38 teams competing Saturday at the 2008 UMass Dartmouth "Shriners"
Cross Country Invitational.
Jasud, making a strong bid to win his third consecutive race, came home in
second place covering the five-mile UMD course in 25 minutes, 6 seconds. He was
just two seconds behind the race winner, Teddy Vrountas of Northeastern
University.
Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) had another strong outing finishing
14th in a time of 25:28. Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic)
posted a top 50 finish coming across the line in 48th place in a time of 26:13.
Rounding out USM's top five were senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) in
54th place with his time of 26:18, and junior JJ Forcella (Falmouth, Maine) in
60th place in 26:24. USM's first eight runners all completed the course in
under 27 minutes.
Keene State College won the meet with 85 points, followed by the U.S. Coast
Guard Academy (115 points), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (118), Amherst
College (121) and Trinity (137). USM had a team total of 178 points.
After an off week, the Huskies will be back in action on October 4 when
they travel to Wenham, Mass., to participate in the Pop Crowell Invitational at
Gordon College.

Tyler Jasud Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) of
the University of Southern Maine men's cross country team has been selected by
the Little East Conference(LEC) as the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
for the week ending September 14. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the LEC.
The second-year runner led the Huskies to another impressive early-season
win last Saturday, winning the University of New England Cross Country
Invitational. Jasud covered the hilly, five-mile Rotary Park course in
Biddeford, Maine, in a time of 28 minutes, 1 second. It was the second straight
weekend that Jasud has been the individual winner.
An All-New England Alliance performer last fall, this is the first time in
his career that Jasud has been recognized by the LEC with a weekly citation.
The Huskies took the top four spots and compiled a team score of 16 points
to easily outdistance second place finisher, the University of Maine at
Farmington. UMF finished with 78 points to edge host UNE by five points for the
runner-up slot. Daniel Webster College (97 points), Maine Maritime Academy (121
points) and Endicott College (129 points) rounded out the six-team field.
The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next weekend for the annual
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.

USM Posts Impressive Win at UNE Invitational
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Paced by junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain
Valley), the University of Southern Maine men's cross country team took nine of
the first 10 places and rolled to an impressive win at the University of New
England Cross Country Invitational Meet run Saturday morning at Rotary Park in
Biddeford.
The Huskies scored 16 points to easily outdistance second place finisher,
the University of Maine at Farmington. UMF finished with 78 points to edge host
UNE by five points for the runner-up slot. Daniel Webster College (97 points),
Maine Maritime Academy (121 points) and Endicott College (129 points) rounded
out the six-team field.
Jasud covered the hilly, five-mile course in a time of 28 minutes, 1 second
to pick up his second individual win of the season. Junior JJ Forcella
(Falmouth, Maine) came home in second place with a time of 28:31. Forcella was
followed by freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Nick Downing
(Winthrop, Maine) in third and fourth places respectively.
Junior Jon Letendre (Rumford, R.I./LaSalle Academy), who came home in
sixth, completed USM's five scoring runners. USM's first six finishers all
completed the course in under 29 minutes, and three more finished in under
29:30.
The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next weekend for the annual
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.

USM's Alex Gomes Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the University
of Southern Maine men's cross country team has been selected by the Little East
Conference as the Rookie of the Week for his strong debut performance last
weekend at the St. Joseph's College Runnin' Monks Early Bird Invitational.
Gomes played a major role in the Huskies dominating effort, covering the
5,000-meter course in a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds to finish third. He was
the second USM runner to cross the finish line. USM captured nine of the first
ten places to win the meet with 16 points. St. Joseph's was a distance second
with 60 points.
The Huskies will compete this Saturday (11:30 a.m.) at the University of
New England Invitational in Biddeford, Maine.

Huskies Impressive at St. Joseph's Meet
STANDISH, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s cross
country team, paced by junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley),
captured nine of the first ten places in an impressive showing Saturday at the
St. Joseph’s College Invitational.
The Huskies easily outdistanced their three rivals, racking up a team score
of 16 points. St. Joseph’s edged the University of New England for second
place, 60-70. New England College came home fourth in the four-team meet.
Jasud covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:41, edging out Ryan Prescott of
St. Joseph’s, who was seven seconds behind, to win the race.
Southern Maine took the next eight places. Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody,
Mass.) crossed the line third overall with a time of 17:10. Gomes was followed
by junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) in 17:13, junior
transfer JJ Forcella (Falmouth, Maine) in 17:18, sophomore Jon Fulford
(Kennebunk, Maine) in 17:20, senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) in 17:21,
freshman John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) in 17:23, freshman Connor Bibb (Jericho,
Vt./Mount Mansfield) in 17:27 and freshman Tom Scott (Underhill, Vt./Mount
Mansfield) in 17:34.
The Huskies will travel to Biddeford, Maine, next Saturday (September 13)
to run in the University of New England Invitational. The men’s race is
scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
