period. USM had killed off a 59-second five-on-three disadvantage before
Beasley lit the lamp, set up by sophomore Dave Conyers (Shoreline, Wash.) and
junior Dan Cotuno (Naperville, Ill.). The goal was Beasley's second of the
season.
After a scoreless second period, the Huskies finally got on the board when
senior John Lauziere (Lewiston, Maine) scored his second goal this season off a
pass from senior Tony Coates (Goose Bay, Labrador). The Huskies were able to
pull freshman goalie Tm Claus (Needham, Mass.) with 1:09 left in regulation, but
were unable to get the equalizer.
Claus did his part to keep the Huskies in the game, stopping 42 of 44
shots before being lifted for the extra attacker. At the other end, junior Mike
Aroesty (Pittsford, N.Y.) kicked out 23 of shots, including 11 in the final
period, for Williams.

Men's Ice Hockey Captains Named at USM

GORHAM, Maine: Senior forward Andrew Gardner (Buffalo, N.Y.) has been
named captain of the University of Southern Maine 2001-02 men's ice hockey team,
while junior forwards Bobby Sloper (Concord, N.H.) and Brian Aceto (Gorham,
Maine) will serve as alternate captains.
"In terms of leadership, this year's captains easily rank among the finest
group we've seen during my time at Southern Maine," said 15th-year head coach
Jeff Beaney. "They are hard-working individuals, who strive for success and lead
by example. Their work ethic was quickly adopted by the rest of our team and
resulted in one of the best training camps we've enjoyed in years."
Gardner, Sloper and Aceto highlight a list of 15 returning lettermen, who
will be joined by 12 new faces to comprise the 2001-02 edition of Southern Maine
men's ice hockey. The contingent will look to improve upon its efforts of a year
ago, when the Huskies posted an overall mark of 5-19-2. Despite the final
record, the club showed several signs of competitiveness, registering a 5-4-1
mark during one 10-game stretch midway through the season.
"We were a young team a year ago," said Beaney. "We lost a great deal of
offensive talent and goaltending depth to graduation, and our record reflects
that. At the same time, a lot of our kids saw considerable action a year ago,
and we will be a more experienced team this year. In addition, the experience we
endured a year ago has made us a hungry team with a strong desire to succeed as
we head into the season."
A two-year starter, Gardner has played in 50 of the club's 52 games over
the past two years. He tallied 11 points on four goals and seven assists a year
ago, and enters his senior campaign with career totals of 10 goals and 11
assists for 21 points.
"Andrew is a hard-nosed player, who will be a strong presence on the ice
and in the locker room," said Beaney. "He demands a great deal from himself and
expects the same commitment from others."
Aceto netted five goals and set up eight others for 13 points, which ranks
second among returning players. He earned ECAC Player of the Week Honors
(January 8-14), after recording a two-game total of three goals and an assist,
including a pair of goals in the third period in the club's come-from-behind 4-2
win at Connecticut College. In 48 career contests, he has registered 23 points
on eight goals and 15 assists.
"Brian is a highly-skilled offensive player who has developed into a
legitimate scoring threat over the past two years," said Beaney. "He's a local
kid, who served as a two-year captain at the Holderness School, and should be
very comfortable serving as an alternate captain this year."
One of the team's most dependable players, Sloper has participated in 49
games over the past two years, including all 26 a year ago. Of his five goals
last season, two were on the power play, and he added an assist for six points.
He enters his junior campaign with career totals of 13 goals and eight assists
for 21 points.
"Bobby is an intelligent, clean player, who should serve as a fitting
complement to our other two captains," said Beaney. "The leadership this trio
provides will be tested early by our schedule. Seven of our first 10 games will
be on the road, and we will face some very solid teams during this stretch. Our
team goals will be to weather this early storm, gain experience and improve
throughout the course of the season, and peak for the playoffs. To accomplish
this, we will depend heavily on our captains."
Gardner, Aceto and Sloper will lead the club on a challenging 26-game,
regular-season schedule, which includes 11 home dates and a full slate of 19
ECAC East league contests. The Huskies commence the campaign with a three-game
homestand against Wesleyan (7:00) on Nov. 16; Trinity (4:00) on Nov. 17; and
Salem State (7:00) on Nov. 20.
The Huskies will then complete a seven-game road trip with games at
Middlebury (7:00) on Nov. 30; at Williams (3:00) on Dec. 1; at Colby (7:00) on
Dec. 4; at Salve Regina (8:00) on Dec. 7; at UMass Dartmouth (4:30) on Dec. 8;
and two games at the New England College Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29.
The month of January will consist of games on Jan. 4, St. Michael's
(7:00); Jan. 5, Norwich (4:00); Jan. 8, at Plymouth State (7:00); Jan. 11, at
Hamilton (7:00); Jan. 12, at Amherst (3:00); Jan. 18, UMass Boston (7:00); Jan.
19, Babson (4:00); Jan. 25, Connecticut College (7:00); and Jan. 26, Tufts
(4:00).
Southern Maine will close out the regular season with games on Feb. 1, at
Saint Anselm (7:30); at New England College (4:00); Feb. 8, Bowdoin (7:00); Feb.
9, Colby (4:00); Feb 15, at Massachusetts College (7:30), and Feb. 16, at
Skidmore (3:10).
The postseason will feature the ECAC Tournament, which includes first
round games on Feb. 23, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals and
finals, over the weekend of March 1-2 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
