Three USM Players Named to ECAC East All-Conference Teams
GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine men's
ice hockey were among the honorees today as the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) announced its Men's East All-Conference teams and awards.
Commissioner for the ECAC, Rudy Keeling, made the announcements.
Keeling announced that senior center Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) was
named to the All-Conference first team, sophomore defenseman Paul Conter
(Woodbridge, Ontario) was tabbed for a spot on the All-Conference second team,
and junior forward Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) picked up a slot on the
honorable mention team. The all-conference teams and individual awards were
voted upon the league's head coaches.
This is the first time that Gordon and Travis have received a conference
end-of-season award. Conter was a member of the All-Rookie team last season.
"I'm really happy for all three," commented head coach Jeff Beaney.
"(Gordon) came in (from UMass Amherst) and had two great seasons for us, and
developed into a team leader this year. (Conter) is probably the best pure
offensive defenseman that the school has ever had, and he's work on the
defensive side of the puck. (Travis) is a natural scorer with great leadership
skills who took a gigantic step toward realizing his potential."
The Huskies' leading scorer this season, Gordon finished the season with 15
goals and 20 assists for 35 points in 25 games. Based upon regular season
conference games, Gordon was tied for second in points scored (23) with Conter
and three other players. Twice during the season he received a spot on
conference's weekly honor roll, and he was named a semifinalist for the Joe
Concannon Award given annually by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the top
American-born player in New England at the Division II/III level.
During his two seasons at USM after transferring from the University of
Massachusetts Amherst, Gordon played in 50 games tallying 28 goals and 36
assists for 64 points.
Conter led the conference in assists during the regular season with 17. He
finished the season as the Huskies' second leading scorer with 26 points on
eight goals and 18 assists. Conter the team with five power-play goals. Over
his first two seasons, Conter has amassed 16 goals and 29 assists in 47 games.
Travis, a Player of the Week (February 3) selection during the season, tied
Gordon for the team lead in goals scored with 15, and finished with 23 points.
He had two hat tricks, two power-play goals and led the team with two short-
handed goals. In three seasons, Travis has racked up 31 goals and 26 assists
for 57 points.
Southern Maine finished the season 11-12-3 overall and 8-8-3 in ECAC Men's
East play (tied for fifth). USM was the fifth seed in the playoffs and dropped
a heart-breaking, 4-3 overtime decision at New England College last weekend.

HENNIKER, N.H. -- Sophomore Simon Laudon-Sorlin (Stockholm, Sweden)
scored at 5:29 of sudden-death overtime to give fourth-seeded New England
College a 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Saturday
night in a first round playoff game of the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic
Conference) Men's East at Lee Clement Arena.
The win vaults the Pilgrims into the improbable situation of hosting the
semifinals and finals next weekend as the top three seeds in the single-
elimination tournament lost Saturday night. The Pilgrims, who played a 2-2 tie
against the Huskies eight days ago, improve to 15-9-2. The Huskies, who were
unbeaten in six previous overtime games this season (3-0-3), finish the season
11-12-3.
Laudon-Sorlin scored the game winner, and his fourth goal of the season,
when he put in the rebound of his initial shot past USM senior goalie Jamie
Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine).
Southern Maine jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals from
junior Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) and senior Josh Giordani (Quincy, Mass.).
Travis' goal, his 15th of the season, came unassisted at 2:40. Giordani lit the
lamp for the second time this season, assisted by sophomore Zach Joy (Dover,
N.H.), at 15:56.
The Pilgrims got one goal back before the end of the first period when
junior Trevor Turner (Westbank, B.C.) scored at 16:34, just nine seconds into a
power play.
Freshman Olli Kalliosaari (Hattula, Finland) tied the game at 14:29 of the
second period with the Pilgrims' second extra-man goal. Turner and freshman
Jarkko Leppanen (Tampere, Finland) picked up the assists.

with an unassisted marker at 11:15 of the third period. With just 1:31 left in
regulation, sophomore Bill McGinnis (Williams Lake, B.C.) drew the hosts even
with his sixth goal, assisted by Laudon-Sorlin and junior Mark Ehl (North
Vancouver, B.C.).
Gilbert closed out his USM career making 30 saves. Sophomore Aaron Harvey

Southern Maine, Tufts Skate to 5-5 Tie
MALDEN, Mass. -- As their records would indicate, the Tufts University
and University of Southern Maine hockey teams proved to be evenly matched and
played to a 5-5 tie in a NESCAC/ECAC East crossover men's game on Saturday
afternoon at Valley Forum II.
In addition to the 5-5 score, shots on goal were almost identical with
Southern Maine finishing with 47 and Tufts University with 46 in an action-
packed 65 minutes of play. Tufts' record moved to 9-11-2 overall (5-10-2 in the
league), while Southern Maine is now 10-11-2 (7-8-2 league).
Southern Maine junior Chris Travis (Scituate, MA) scored the Huskies' first
three goals for a hat trick. Sophomore defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, ONT)
had two assists in the game. Senior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, ME), who
came on in relief of injured starter Koray Celik (Ile-bizzard, QUE) in the first
period, finished with 35 saves.
The Jumbos had three multiple-point scorers. Sophomores Mike Vitale
(Brookfield, IL) and Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, CO) both had a goal and an
assist. Sophomore Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) added two assists. Freshman
goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 42 saves.
Tufts led 1-0 just nine seconds into the game when freshman Nick Resor
(Westwood, MA) broke up a pass, went in alone on Celik and put one in off the
post. Travis' first of the game on a power-play at 7:30 tied the score, but the
Jumbos answered 89 seconds later on the first goal of the year by sophomore
Conor Pieri (Needham, MA) at 8:59. Travis struck again on a short-handed break-
away at 11:27 for a 2-2 tie. Vitale gave Tufts a 3-2 advantage at 16:40 and that
was the score at the end of a busy first period.
The Jumbos built a two-goal lead at 4-2 when junior Doug Wilson (San Jose,
CA) scored on a power-play at 5:29. However, within six minutes the Huskies had
erased the lead with the third goal of the game and 13th of the season by Travis
at 5:43 - 14 seconds after Wilson's goal - and another by senior Eric Morgani
(Reading, MA) at 11:07. The second period, which featured 35 total shots on goal
including 20 by Southern Maine, ended in a 4-4 deadlock.
The third period brought on 32 more shots, with 18 by Tufts. Cooper swatted
in his own rebound at 2:23 of the third period to give Tufts a 5-4 lead.
Southern Maine came back again though, with senior Matt Rowe (Newmarket, ONT)
netting his second of the year at 6:13 to make it 5-5. The teams went scoreless
over the final 13:47 of the third and all five minutes in overtime.
In further signs of the equality of the game, both teams 10 penalties
whistled against them and each went one for six on the power-play.

and junior Greg Parker (Trenton, Ontario) stopped 43 of 45 Husky shots in the
Camels' third straight win. Senior Brian Liamero (New York, N.Y.) chipped in

Senior Matt Rowe (Newmarket, Ont.) and sophomore Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.)
tallied scores for the Huskies, who battled back from 3-0 deficit to make things
interesting in the third period.
The Camels took a 1-0 lead on Liamero's goal with 6:04 remaining in the
opening period. Junior Trevor Bradley (West Hartford, Conn.) was credited with
the lone assist on the marker.
The Camels doubled their lead with a power-play goal from Boutet at 4:29 of

seventh goal of the season. The Huskies out-shot the Camels, 18-11, in the
middle period, but Parker was able to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
Southern Maine did not go quietly though. Rowe cut the lead to two with
13:32 to go. Senior captain Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill.) and junior Pat Noonan
(Burlington, Mass.) assisted on the tally. Midway through the frame, Joy potted
his 13th goal of the season on the power play. Junior Dan Falbo (Newmarket,

goal of the Camels.
The Huskies out-shot the Camels, 20-11, in the third period, but could not
get a third goal past Parker.

Castleton State Blanks Southern Maine 2-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Brandon Heck (Forestburg, Alberta) had a goal and
an assist and senior Jeff Swanson (Grand Haven, Mich.) stopped 19 shots as
Castleton State College shut out the University of Southern Maine, 2-0, in an
ECAC Men's East game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win lefts the Spartans over the Huskies in the updated standings and
into a tie for third place with Babson College. The Spartans, who swept their
weekend road trip to Salem State College and USM, have now won three straight to
improve to 11-8-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the league.
The Huskies had their four-game unbeaten string (3-0-1) snapped and fall
back to .500 at 10-10-1 overall and 7-7-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first period where Swanson and USM senior Jamie Gilbert
(Lewiston, Maine) kept the offenses at bay, the Spartans struck for the only
goal they would need at 5:55 while shorthanded. Heck and junior Steve
Culbertson (Bowling Green, Ohio) broke up the USM breakout at the blue line with
Heck picking up the loose puck and cruising in on the left side. His first shot
from the face-off circle was stopped by Gilbert, but he followed the rebound and
finally lifted the puck over the sprawling Gilbert.
The Spartans got an insurance goal late in the final period when freshman
Dan Mauriello (Guilford, Conn.) tipped home a centering pass from Heck.
Swanson, making just his third start of the season, picked up his fifth
career shutout stopping every shot USM fired his way. Gilbert finished the game
with 30 saves.
Southern Maine makes its final road trip of the regular season next weekend
traveling to Connecticut College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Tufts University on

Joy's Goal in OT Give USM 3-2 Win Over Skidmore
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore wing Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) scored at 1:55 of
overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 3-2 victory over Skidmore
College in an ECAC Men's East game Friday night a the USM Ice Arena.
The win extends the Huskies' unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and
lifts them above .500 at 10-9-1 overall and 7-6-1 in league play. The
Thoroughbreds drop to 10-9-0 overall and 6-8-0 in league action.
Joy broke up a Skidmore rush at the USM blue line, collecting the loose
puck in center ice for a partial breakaway. With a defenseman draped all over
him, Joy's initial shot from 25-feet was stopped by Skidmore freshman goalie
Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas). Joy, who lost his feet on the shot, was able to
poke the rebound between Ross's legs while sliding into the goalie and the net.
USM rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period to tie the game at 11:40

Babson Defeats Southern Maine 4-2
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Host Babson College scored three unanswered goals
in the second period to overcome an early 1-0 deficit en route to an eventual 4-
2 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC East
men’s ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Friday night.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 6-7-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the
conference, while the Huskies dipped to 7-9-0 overall and 4-6 in the ECAC East.
After a scoreless and penalty-riddled first period, Southern Maine struck
first when senior Eric Morgani (Reading, Mass.) converted a breakaway feed from
classmate Dan Gordon (Springfield, Mass.) at 5:38 of the second. The lead would
be short-lived, however, as junior Gabriel Chenard-Poirier (St. Augustin,
Quebec) sent a laser into the upper right corner from the left point on a Babson
power play at 7:30.
The Beavers would tack on two more goals in the final 5:05 of the second to
take a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission. Senior JT Balben (Wayland,
Mass.) scored the first off a centering pass from senior co-captain Brad
Baldelli (Northboro, Mass.) at 14:55 and first-year Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.)
netted the second when his wrist shot found the upper right corner off a pass
from senior Alex DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) at 18:58.
Babson continued its attack early in the third, as first-year Cody Carlson
(Peterborough, N.H.) scored his first collegiate goal on a wrap-around just over
four minutes in.
Southern Maine would get one goal back when sophomore Paul Conter
(Woodbridge, Ontario) scored at 9:07 of the third, but that would be all the
Beavers’ defense would allow as the hosts claimed the 4-2 victory.
Babson first-year goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) made 23 saves
in the first 54 minutes in net before being forced to leave with an equipment
problem. Senior Skylar Nipps (Orlando, Fla.) came on to blank the Huskies over
the final six minutes, making four stops. Freshman Koray Celik (Ile-bizzard,
Quebec) played all but one minute in goal for USM, finishing with 31 saves.

Southern Maine Holds Off Wesleyan, 3-2
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey
team scored three times in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and held on
to defeat Wesleyan University, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in an ECAC East-NESCAC
inter-league game at Middletown, Conn.
Southern Maine upped its record to 6-6 overall, 4-3 in conference play
while Wesleyan slipped to 1-9 overall, 1-5 in league action. With the win,
Southern Maine evened the all-time series with Wesleyan at 6-6-2.
Sophomore Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) evened the count at 1-1 just 48
seconds into the middle stanza, as he collared the rebound of a shot by senior
Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) from the slot which was stopped by the pad of
Wesleyan senior goalie Mike Palladino (Litchfield, Conn.). The puck went to
Rutt on the left side and he found an open net to fire upon as Palladino was
unable to recover.
Southern Maine went ahead for good at 6:57 on a great individual effort by
sophomore Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) as he took over team goal-scoring leadership
with his eighth tally of the season. A pass toward the Wesleyan blue line was
deflected by a Cardinal defender, but the puck went high in the air and
continued into the Wesleyan zone where Joy collected it and skated in alone,
beating Palladino through his pads for the 2-1 lead.
Freshman Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) provided what proved to be
the game-winner at 16:51, receiving a pass from the right side by sophomore Paul
Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) and snapping off a high shot from the left circle
for his fifth goal of the year. Gordon also got an assist as he improved his
seasonal scoring figure to a team-best 21 points (7-14-21).
Wesleyan scored first with a power-play goal at 9:46 of the first period as

left point. From there, Mucha fired in a slap shot that Huskies freshman keeper
Koray Celik (Ile-bizzard, Quebec) got a stick on but couldn't control. Wesleyan
pulled Palladino for the final 1:30 but couldn't get a dangerous shot on goal
despite a Huskies penalty with 23 seconds left that allowed the Cardinals to
skate with a two-man advantage.
Celik ended the game with 23 saves. Palladino turned aside 24 shots before
being lifted.

Babson Blanks Southern Maine 5-0
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College erupted for a season-high five goals
and first-year goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) made 14 saves to earn
his first collegiate shutout as the host Beavers defeated the visiting
University of Southern Maine, 5-0, in the consolation game of the sixth annual
Babson Invitational Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament presented by Irving Oil on
Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Babson improved to 1-2-1 on the season. Southern Maine
dropped its second straight to slip to 2-3-0.
Babson wasted little time grabbing the lead, scoring just 13 seconds into
the contest. First-year Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) took a pass from senior
Pat McLaughlin (Berlin, Mass.) and fired a shot from the right corner that went
in off the back of Southern Maine first-year goalie Koray Celik (Ile-Bizzzard,
Que.) at 0:13. The Beavers then made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal at 16:43 of
the period, as junior Chris Wood (Medford, Mass.) took a breakaway feed from
sophomore Terry Woods (Duxbury, Mass.) and beat Celik on the stick side.
The hosts continued to press the attack in the second period, mounting 15
shots to the Huskies’ four as part of a 33-14 shot advantage for the game.
However, the Beavers were kept off the board until the final three minutes of
the session, when a flurry of Southern Maine penalties led to a pair of power-
play goals. Wood scored the first off a feed from junior Jason Schneider
(Littleton, Mass.) for his second goal of the game at 17:27, and junior Shane
Farrell (West Warwick, R.I.) netted the second with 8.3 seconds left in the
period off a pass from Woods.
Junior Cory Griffin (Hingham, Mass.) would tack on another power-play score
at 15:01 of the third as Babson skated away with the 5-0 victory.
It was the first career shutout for Peabody, who made six saves in the
first period and four each in the second and third for a total of 14 stops.
Celik went the distance in net for Southern Maine, finishing with 28 saves.

Manhattanville Bests Southern Maine 4-2 at Babson Invitational
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior Kevin Maresco (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored one
goal and assisted two others to help lead the Manhattanville College Valiants to
a 4-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the semifinal
round of the sixth annual Babson Invitational Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament
presented by Irving Oil on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Manhattanville (3-2-1) advances to tomorrow’s championship
game at 4:00 p.m., while Southern Maine (2-2-0) will play in the Consolation
Game at 1:00 p.m.
Manhattanville got on the board late in the first period after Southern
Maine was whistled for a penalty with 58 seconds remaining in the period. On the
ensuing power play, Huskies’ senior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) made
a nice save on sophomore Mickey Lang’s (Hillsdale, N.J.) tipped shot in front,
but Maresco collected the rebound near the right post and tucked it in for the
game’s first goal at 19:49.2.
Southern Maine tied the game at 6:11 of the second, as sophomore Zach Joy
(Dover, N.H.) tipped a shot by classmate Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) past
Valiants’ sophomore goalie Sergiy Sorokolat (Kharkiv, Ukraine).
However, Manhattanville retook the lead just 16 seconds later, as junior
Dillon Henningson (Edmonton, Alberta) put back a rebound of Maresco’s shot at
16:27 to give his team a 2-1 advantage. The Valiants would tack on another goal
before the end of the period, as junior Matt Piegza (Chicago, Ill.) one-timed a
feed from Maresco inside the left post at 14:28 to give Manhattanville a 3-1
lead after two.
The Huskies pulled back to within one when junior Brett Kapteina (Stamford,
Conn.) scored off a rebound on a power play at 1:12 of the third to make it a 3-
2 contest. However, just seconds after a USM power play expired late in the
session, Manhattanville netted a huge insurance goal when junior Niklas
Berntsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) converted a breakaway pass from Piegza with 1:09
remaining, resulting in the 4-2 Valiants victory.
Gilbert kept Southern Maine close with a tremendous effort in net,
finishing with 40 saves. Sorokolat turned away eight shots in goal for
Manhattanville.

Senior Ben Loss Named USM Men's Ice Hockey Captain
Senior Kyle Smith Tabbed as Assistant Captain
Huskies Open Season Friday Night at Norwich
GORHAM, Maine -- Veteran University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey
head coach Jeff Beaney announced this week that senior defenseman Ben Loss
(Wilmette, Ill.) has been named captain of the 2008-09 team as the Huskies
prepare for their season opener this Friday night at Norwich University.
Beaney also announced that senior wing Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) has been
tabbed as an assistant captain for the upcoming season.
The Huskies open their 31st varsity season, and 22nd under the direction of
Beaney, this weekend with a trip to Vermont to play defending league champion
Norwich on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saint Michael's College on Saturday (3:00
p.m.). Norwich is the preseason favorite to repeat according to the coaches
poll conducted earlier this month. Southern Maine was sixth in the preseason
poll while Saint Michael's checked in in tenth.
The Huskies have 19 players returning from last year's squad that posted a
14-9-3 overall record and an 8-8-3 mark in league play.
"I'm very excited for Ben. He has a lot of natural leadership abilities
and is well respected by his teammates and the coaching staff. He's very
organized and consistent in his approach to things on and off the ice,"
commented Beaney.
"Kyle has played every role for us - power play, penalty kill, regular
shift - and sacrifices (moving from right to left wing) for the good of the
team. Everyone likes him. He was in this role last year and will provide a
good complement to (Loss)," added Beaney.
Loss and Smith have been three-year regulars in the USM lineup. Loss
played wing and defense his rookie season before settling in as a regular on the
blue line in 2006-07. Smith has been a fixture at wing all three seasons. Both
were named to the ECAC Men's East All-Academic team last year.
The captain of the USM golf team this past fall season, Loss will be the
leader of the Huskies' youthful defense grouping playing in front of senior
goaltender Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine).
Loss, who had eight assists in 17 games played last season, will be joined on
the blue line by returnees Eric Graham (North Berwick, Maine), Ryan Jean
(Randolph, Maine), Mike Carpenter (Minot, Maine) and Paul Conter (Woodbridge,
Ontario), and four newcomers.
Smith was the Huskies' third leading scorer last season netting 13 goals,
including nine on the power play, and passing out 10 assists for 23 points. He
begins the season with 28 career goals and 27 assists in 75 games.
After this weekend's road trip, the Huskies will return to the USM Ice
Arena for their home opener on November 25 (4:00 p.m.) when they host Plymouth
State University in a non-league game. The Huskies close out November's
schedule playing in the Babson Invitational Tournament November 29-30.
Three games are on the schedule in the month of December before the Huskies
break for semester exams and the holidays. Williams College comes to the USM
Ice Arena on December 5 (7:00) and Middlebury College comes to town on December
6 (4:00 p.m.). The Huskies finish their December schedule with a trip to Salem
State College on December 12 (7:00 p.m.).
USM resumes play in January with non-league home games against Colby on
January 2 (7:00 p.m.) and Framingham State on January 6 (7:00 p.m.) before
getting back into league play with road games at Trinity College on January 9
(7:00 p.m.) and Wesleyan University on January 10 (3:00 p.m.).
The Huskies final non-league game of the schedule with Suffolk University
on January 13 (7:00 p.m.) kicks off a three-game homestand. Amherst College
comes to USM on January 16 (7:00 p.m.) and Hamilton College visits on January 17
(4:00 p.m.).
USM closes out January with four straight road games at Babson College on
January 23 (7:00 p.m.), the University of Massachusetts Boston on January 24
(3:00 p.m.), Colby College on January 30 (7:00 p.m.) and Bowdoin College on
January 31 (4:00 p.m.).
Southern Maine has six games on the February schedule, including four at
the USM Ice Arena. Skidmore College comes to USM on February 6 (7:00 p.m.) and
Castleton State College visits the next afternoon (4:00 p.m.). USM plays its
final two regular season road games at Connecticut College on February 13 (7:00)
and Tufts University on February 14 (4:00 p.m.). The regular season comes to a
close with home contests against New England College on February 20 (7:00 p.m.)
and Saint Anselm College on February 21 (4:00 p.m.).
The eight NCAA Division III teams in the league will advance to the
championship tournament with four quarterfinal games being played February 28.
The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals at the highest
remaining seed March 7-8. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic
