Tim Even, Mattia Zagon Named LEC Rookies of the Year
Coach Scott Hutchinson Picked as Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's
indoor track and field team, freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy
and Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland), are the recipients of end-of-the-
season awards released today by the Little East Conference.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
that Even had been selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Year and Zagon
was tabbed as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year. Keene State College
sophomores Craig McPherson and Bryan Kolacz were picked as the Track Athlete of
the Year and Field Athlete of the Year respectively. The end-of-the-season
awards were selected by a vote of the conference's coaches.
In addition, Harper announced that USM head coach Scott Hutchinson had been
voted by his peers as the Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
Two of a very talented group of first-year athletes, Even and Zagon made a
big impact on the program in their rookie season. The pair helped the Huskies
win the Little East Conference and the New England Alliance titles for the first
time since 2005, finish second at the State of Maine Championships, and post
another top ten finish at the New England Division III Championships.
Even had an outstanding championships run over the final five weeks of the
season. At the State Championships, he won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2
minutes, 34.04 seconds, placed third in the mile with a time of 4:26.07,
anchored the Huskies winning 8 x 800-meter relay (8:10.73) and was the recipient
of the Jim Wescott Award given to the outstanding performer on the track.
A week later, Even swept the LEC and Alliance titles winning the 1,000
(2:32.84) and mile (4:22.11), and anchored the all-freshmen 4 x 800 relay to a
second place result (8:11.54). He earned Division III All-New England honors
placing eighth in the 800 meters (1:58.79) and seventh with the 4 x 800 relay
(8:12.43).
In the final two indoor meets, Even set the school record in the 800 meters
(1:54.31) at the NEIcAAA Championships, and earned All-ECAC honors with his
fifth place finish in the mile (4:18.49). During the season, Even was named LEC
Rookie Track Athlete of the Week five times.
Zagon was just as impressive on the field side, winning the long jump at
the State Championships with a leap of 6.43 meters (21-1 1/4) and contributing a
sixth place finish in the 200 meters (23.65). At the LEC/Alliance
Championships, he won the long jump with a school record jump of 6.77 meters
(22-2 1/2). In the LEC scoring, Zagon also posted third place finishes in the
55-meter dash (6.80) and 200 meters (23.58).
At the New England Division III Championships, Zagon posted a fourth place
result in the long jump with a best leap of 6.65 meters (21-10). At the season-
ending ECAC meet, he was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 6.57 meters (21-6
3/4) and earned All-ECAC accolades. During the season, he was the LEC Rookie
Field Athlete of the Week five times.
Hutchinson, in his fourth season at USM, guided the Huskies to their first
LEC and Alliance indoor titles since 2005. His team scored a meet record 244
points to win the LEC title, and took the Alliance crown with 180 points. At
the New England Division III Championships, the 4 x 400-meter relay team won
that event (3:27.43) to help the team post its fourth consecutive top ten
finish, and six athletes earned individual Division III All-New England honors.
He also mentored seven athletes who were named to the LEC Winter All-Academic
team.

Tim Even, Mattia Zagon Receive LEC Weekly Accolades
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and
Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) of the University of Southern Maine
men's indoor track and field team have been recognized by the Little East
Conference for their outstanding performances last weekend at the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Even had been selected as the Track Athlete of the Week, and Zagon
had been picked as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. This is the sixth time
during the indoor season that Even has been cited, and the fifth time for Zagon.
Even competed in two events at the ECAC Championships. He finished fifth
in the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 18.49 seconds to earn All-ECAC
recognition. He also ran in the 800 meters, finishing 11th with a time of
1:59.10.
Zagon placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.57 meters (21-6 3/4)
to also earn All-ECAC recognition.
The rookie duo accounted for all of Southern Maine's seven points during
the two-day event. USM finished in a tie for 36th place with Penn State-Behrend
among the 50 schools scoring in the championships. St. Lawrence University
captured the team title with 53 points, followed by runner-up Amherst College
with 41.
The ECAC meet concluded the indoor season for Southern Maine. USM opens
its 2009 outdoor campaign on March 21 in Dedham, Mass., competing at the
Northeastern University Spring Invitational.

Even, Zagon Earn All-ECAC Honors
MEDFORD, Mass. -- Freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy)
and Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) of the University of Southern Maine
men's indoor track and field team earned All-ECAC honors Saturday competing at
the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Track and Field
Championships held at Tufts University.
Even placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 18.49 seconds
while Zagon was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.57 meters (21-6 3/4).
Even also ran in the 800 meters, finishing 11th with his time of 1:59.10.
The rookie duo accounted for all of Southern Maineís seven points during
the two-day event. USM finished in a tie for 36th place with Penn State-Behrend
among the 50 schools scoring in the championships. St. Lawrence University

Even, Winkler Earn LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and
Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) of the University of Southern
Maine men's indoor track and field team have been recognized by the Little East
Conference for their efforts last weekend at the New England Intercollegiate
Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Championships.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Even had been named the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, and Winkler
was selected as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. This the fifth time this
season that Even has received Rookie Track Athlete honors, and the second time
that Winkler has been picked as Rookie Field Athlete.
Even had an impressive meet, setting a school record in the 800-meter
trials on Friday with his time of 1 minute, 54.31 seconds. He came back on
Saturday to run the mile in 4:16.03, just missing an NCAA Division III
Championships provisional-qualifying time by 1.03 seconds, and the school record
by 1.11 seconds. Even had the 14th fastest time in the 800-meter trials, and
the 18th quickest time in the mile.
Winkler continued his strong season in the pole vault clearing 4.50 meters
(14-9) to finish 12th overall and third among Division III competitors in the
field.
The NEIcAAA Championships, also referred to as the Open New England
Championships, feature NCAA Division I, II and III institutions from across the
six-state region.
Even, Winkler and other USM qualifiers will compete this Friday and
Saturday at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III
Championships being held at Tufts University.

USM Competes at NEIcAAA Championships
BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field
team wrapped up competition in the second day of the New England Intercollegiate
Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Championships held at the Boston
University Track and Tennis Center.
Despite not scoring any points, the Huskies had some outstanding
performances Saturday. Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy),
who set a school record Friday in the 800 meters, came back to run a personal
best in the mile with a time of 4 minutes,16.03 seconds to place 18th overall.
That time was 1.03 seconds shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying time for banked
tracks, and 1.11 seconds off the school record.
Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Justin Richardson
(Turner/St. Dominic) turned in excellent times the 3,000 meters. Gomes turned
in a personal best time of 8:45.02 to finish 15th while Richardson came home
with his first sub 8:50 time of 8:49.75 to place 21st.
The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of freshman Jake Moore (Bridgton,
Maine/Lake Region), sophomores Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) and Corey Gobbi
(Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) knocked six seconds
off their previous best time to post a season-best 3:21.74 to place 14th.
In the field events, freshman AJ Marden (Victory, Vt.) led a trio of USM
triple jumpers with a best jump of 12.87 meters (42-2 3/4) to finish 14th.
The Huskies will compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III Championships being held at Tufts University next weekend.

Even, Vigeant Set School Records at NEIcAAA Championships
BOSTON -- Freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and Justin
Vigeant (Wells, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's indoor track
and field team set school records Friday in the first day of competition at the
New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Championships
being held at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Even set his record in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 54.31
seconds in his trials heat to break the previous mark of 1:55.22 set by Jimmy
Sawyer a year ago at the same meet. Even's time missed the NCAA provisional
qualifying standard for 200-meter banked tracks by a mere 0.06 seconds. Even
was 14th quickest overall among the 32 competitors and missed the 10-man final
on Saturday by less than one second.
Barely a half hour later, Vigeant broke the school record in the 200 meters
with a time of 22.47 in his trials race. His time broke the old standard of
22.68 set by Derek Murchie last year at the NEIcAAA meet. Vigeant, who was 16th
fastest in the 200 trials, also ran in the 55-meter dash trials and posted a
time of 6.71 seconds.
Freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) competed in the
pole vault and cleared 4.50 meters (14-9) to finish 12th. Classmate Mattia
Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) was 16th in the long jump with a best jump of
6.36 meters (20-10 1/2).
After one day of competition (five events scored), the University of
Connecticut leads the championship with 26 points.
Competition will continue on Saturday at the B.U. Track and Tennis Center.

Mattia Zagon Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight week, and fourth time this
season, University of Southern Maine freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland,
Maine/Portland) has been named the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week in the
Little East Conference.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, made the
announcement this afternoon. Zagon, one of three USM athletes to receive LEC
Rookie Field Athlete of the Week this winter, had previously received the weekly
honor on January 19 and February 2 and 16.
At last weekend's New England Division III Championships held at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Zagon finished fourth in the long jump
with a leap of 6.65 meters (21-10). Seeded eighth among the nine competitors in
the finals after three rounds of jumping, Zagon moved up four spots to fourth
place on his fifth attempt.
Zagon is qualified in the long jump for the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic
Conference) Division III Championships at Tufts University on March 6-7. He
will wait until Wednesday to hear if he has made the field for the NEIcAAA New
England Championships this weekend at Boston University.

USM Gains Top Ten Finish at N.E. Division III Championships
4 x 400 Relay Wins Title
GORHAM, Maine -- For the fourth straight year, and sixth time in the
history of the program, the University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and
field team posted a top ten finish at the New England Division III Championships
held Friday and Saturday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The underclass-laden Huskies earned 25.50 points to finish 10th among the
24 schools that scored in the meet. Perennial powerhouse Williams College won
the team title with 145 points, followed by Tufts University and M.I.T. with 104
points. Bowdoin College, with 54 points, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, with
51 points, round out the top five teams.
Leading the Huskies was the 4 x 400-meter relay which won the event with
their time of 3 minutes, 27.43 seconds. Sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven,
Vt./Fair Haven Union), freshman Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region),
sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.)
combined to become the first USM runners to win an event at this meet since
Charlie Tarbox won two events (55 and 200 meters) in 2000. Davis also placed in
the high jump coming in sixth after clearing 1.87 meters (6-1 1/2) and advanced
to the final of the 55-meter hurdles.
Freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) was the top individual
finisher for USM taking fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 6.65 meters
(21-10). Freshman AJ Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) finished seventh in
the triple jump with an effort of 13.57 meters (44-6 1/4), and classmate Orion
Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) tied for seventh in the pole vault
clearing 4.27 meters (14-0).
Earning single points for eighth place finishes were freshman Tim Even
(Stoneham, Maine) in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.79, and Mercer in the
600 meters with a time of 1:24.26.
The Huskies final two points came courtesy of the all freshmen 4 x 800-
meter relay quartet of Ben Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union), Tom
Scott (Underhill, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union), John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) and Even
which place seventh with their combined time of 8:12.43.
Southern Maine will compete next Friday and Saturday (February 27-28) at
the NEIcAAA New England Championships being held at Boston University.

Even, Zagon Receive LEC Weekly Recognition

men's indoor track and field team have been selected for Little East Conference
weekly honors that were announced today.
Little East Conference commissioner Jonathan Harper announced that Even had
been picked as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week for the second straight
week, and the fourth time this season, and that Zagon was named the Rookie Field
Athlete of the Week.
The duo helped Southern Maine win its first New England Alliance and Little
East Conference titles since 2005 this past Saturday at the USM Field House.
The Huskies outdistanced runner-up Westfield State College, 180-144, to win the
Alliance title. The Alliance scoring involves schools from the LEC and the
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Huskies dominated
the LEC scoring with a record-setting total of 244 points.
Even had an impressive day winning two events and running the anchor leg of
the Huskies' second place 4 x 800-meter relay. Coming from behind on the final
lap, Even won the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 22.11 seconds. He returned
to the track later to win the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32.84.
Zagon, who is receiving his third Rookie Field Athlete of the Week citation
for the season, won the long jump with a school record distance of 6.77 meters
(22-2 1/2). His mark broke the previous record of 22-0 3/4 set five years ago
to the day by Trey Gadbois. Zagon scored in the 55-meter dash (seventh in the
Alliance, third in LEC) with a time of 6.80 seconds, and the 200 meters (third
in LEC) with a time of 23.58.
Southern Maine will be back in action this weekend at the New England
Division III Championships being held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Southern Maine Sweeps N.E. Alliance and LEC Titles
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and
field team won eight events en route to winning its first New England Alliance
and Little East Conference championships since 2005 Saturday at the USM Field
House.
Southern Maine, the Alliance meet runner-up the past two seasons, won that
championship outdistancing second place Westfield State College by 36 points,
180-144. Fitchburg State College was third with 79 points followed by Keene
State College in fourth with 66 points.
In the Little East Conference scoring, USM took the team title in
dominating fashion with 244 points. Keene State was a distance second with 89
points.
The New England Alliance meet consists of school representing the Little
East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Each conference scores its respective champion from the Alliance
results.
Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the Huskies' lone
double winner, coming from behind on the final lap to win the mile in 4 minutes,
22.11 seconds, and later winning the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32.84.
Freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) set a school record in the
long jump, winning the event with a leap of 6.77 meters (22-2 1/2). That mark
broke the school record of 6.72 meters (22-0 3/4) set by Trey Gadbois in the
Alliance meet five years ago to the day.
Other individual winners for USM included freshman Orion Winkler
(Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) who cleared 4.50 meters (14-9) in the pole
vault, freshman AJ Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) who won his sixth triple
jump competition of the season with an effort of 13.46 meters (44-2), junior
Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) took the 3,000 meters with a time
of 8:51.89, and sophomore Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) won the 55-
meter hurdles in 8.12.
The Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of sophomore Evan Davis (Fair
Haven, Vt.), freshman Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), sophomore Corey
Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) won that event
with a time of 3:27.70.
Davis gave the Huskies a 1-2 finish in the hurdles finishing right behind
Shepard in 8.14. Freshman Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) was runner-up in the
200 meters with a time of 22.75 and the all-freshmen 4 x 800-meter relay was
second with a time of 8:11.54.
Freshman Ben Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union), who ran the
opening leg of the 4 x 800, earned a third place result in the 800 meters with a
time of 1:59.98, and freshman Pierome Sar (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) was third in
the high jump clearing 1.81 meters (5-11 3/4).
Southern Maine will send its qualifiers to the New England Division III
Championships being held at M.I.T. next weekend.

USM Takes Three of Four LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and
field team captured three of the four weekly Little East Conference awards that
were released today. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East
Conference, announced that freshman A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) had
been selected as the Field Athlete of the Week, freshman Tim Even (Stoneham,
Maine/Fryeburg Academy) had been tabbed as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week,
and freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) had been named
the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
This is the third time during the indoor season that Even has been picked
for the Rookie Track Athlete honor. Marden is collecting his second Field
Athlete of the Week citation of the season. This is Winkler's first weekly
honor.
Even had an outstanding meet at the State of Maine Championships this past
Saturday night. He won the grueling 1,000 meters with a time of 2:34.04, placed
third in the mile with his time of 4:26.07, and anchored the Huskies' winning 4
x 800-meter relay team. In the relay, Even received the baton in third place
and overcame the deficit to give USM's all freshmen quartet the victory in a
time of 8:10.73. For his efforts, Even was named the recipient of the Jim
Wescott Award, given to the outstanding track athlete in the meet.
Marden, who also has been picked twice this season as the Rookie Field
Athlete of the Week in addition to the two Field Athlete honors, won his fifth
triple jump competition of the season with a jump of 13.41 meters (44-0).
Winkler won the pole vault with a season-best effort of 4.64 meters (15-2
3/4), and became just the third USM pole vaulter to clear 15 feet indoors. He
joins former All-American and school record holder Wil Snyder and Adam Haggerty
as the only USM competitors to clear 15 feet indoors. Winkler's effort
qualified him for the upcoming New England Division III Championships, the
NEIcAAA New England Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships.

Southern Maine Finishes Second at State Championships
Huskies Win Six Individual Titles and One Relay
LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track
and field team won six individual titles and one relay en route to a second
place finish at the 2009 State of Maine Championships held Saturday night at the
Walter Slovenski Track on the campus of Bates College.
Southern Maine, the defending champion, compiled 162 points to take the
runner-up spot behind Bowdoin College which earned 208.50 points. Bates College
took third with 132.50 points.
Five freshmen won individual titles, highlighted by rookie transfer Justin
Vigeant (Wells, Maine) taking the 55-meter dash in his first meet for Huskies.
Vigeant, seeded fourth after the trials, won the title with a time of 6.62
seconds in the finals. Vigeant also earned a second place result in the 200
meters with his time of 23.20 seconds.
Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) captured the pole vault
by clearing 15-2 3/4 (4.64 meters) and became the third member of the exclusive
15-foot club. He joins former All-American and school record holder Wil Snyder
and Adam Haggerty as the only USM competitors to clear 15 feet indoors.
Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) won the 1,000 meters for his
time of 2:34.04. He also placed third in the mile with a time of 4:26.07.
Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) took the long jump competition with
a leap of 6.43 meters (21-1 1/4), and A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury)
won his fifth triple jump event of the season with an effort of 13.41 meters
(44-0).
Senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) was the other individual winner,
capturing the title in the 600 meters for the second straight year with his time
of 1:25.21.
The all freshmen 4 x 800-meter relay team of Ben Manning (Jericho,

Earning other second place finishes for the Huskies were sophomores Sammy

Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) in the high jump (1.86 meters/6-1
1/4), and Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) in the 400 meters (51.90). The 4 x 400
relay took second place with a time of 3:28.68.
Other third place finishes were registered by sophomore Mason Shepard
(Portland, Maine/Deering) in the 55-meter hurdles (8.25), junior Justin
Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) in the 5,000 meters (15:42.11) and
sophomore transfer Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) in the shot put
(12.53 meters/41-1 1/2).
The Huskies will compete at the Little East Conference and New England
Alliance Championships on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). The meet will be held at the

McKeon, Zagon Receive LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's
indoor track and field team, junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) and freshman
Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine), have received weekly honors from the Little East
Conference for their performances Saturday at the USM Coed Invitational.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced the
weekly honors this afternoon.
McKeon was recognized as the Track Athlete of the Week while Zagon was
selected as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. This is the first time in his
career that McKeon has been a recipient of an LEC weekly award. Zagon won the
Rookie Field award two weeks ago.
McKeon won two events at the USM Coed Invitational. He captured the top
spot in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.75 seconds in the finals and the 200
meters with a time of 23.72.
Zagon scored in three events, winning his second long jump competition of
the season with a leap of 21-9 1/2 (6.64 meters). He was second behind McKeon
in the 200 meters with a time of 23.75 and third in the 55-meter dash with a
time of 6.84.
Southern Maine finished first among the six teams competing in the meet,
scoring 267 points to edge out Bates College which tallied 233 points.
The Huskies return to action this Saturday night (6:00 p.m.) when they
travel to Bates for the annual State of Maine Championships.

Southern Maine Takes Top Spot at USM Coed Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and
field team won six individual events and swept the two relays to take the team
title at the USM Coed Invitational meet Saturday afternoon at the Costello
Sports Complex.
USM edged out Bates College for the top spot, 267-233. Emmanuel College
was a distant third in the six-team event with 47 points.
Junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) was a double winner for the Huskies,
taking first in the 55-meter dash with his time in the finals of 6.75 seconds
and the 200 meters with a time of 23.72 seconds.
Other winners for the Huskies were senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) in
the 600 meters with a time of 1:27.43, sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) in
the high jump by clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4), and freshmen Mattia Zagon
(Portland, Maine/Portland) in the long jump with a leap of 6.64 meters (21-9
1/2) and AJ Marden (Victory, Vt.) in the triple jump with a jump of 44-1 (13.43
meters).
The Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Davis, freshman Jake Moore
(Bridgton, Maine), sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and Mercer posted a
winning time of 3:27.38. The 4 x 800 relay of freshmen Ben Manning (Jericho,
Vt.), Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.), John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) and Tim Even
(Stoneham, Maine) won with a time of 8:12.66.
Zagon also scored in the 200 meters, placing second (23.75), and the 55-
meter dash, finishing third (6.84). Moore and Gobbi finished second (52.32) and
third (52.56) respectively in the 400 meters. Even and Gomes also came home
second (4:21.67) and third (4:26.02) respectively in the mile. Davis picked up
a third place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.22).
Marden led a 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump. He was followed by sophomores
Sammy Neang (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) and Nate Fogell (Alton Bay,
N.H./Prospect Mountain). Neang jumped 41-3 and Fogell posted a best mark of 41-
0. Fogell also placed third in the high jump.
The Huskies return to action next Saturday night (6:00 p.m.) at the annual
State of Maine Championships be hosted by Bates College. The Huskies are the
defending champion.

Even, Marden Named LEC Rookies of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and
A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) of the University of Southern Maine
men's indoor track and field team have been named the Little East Conference
men's track and field Rookies of the Week for the week of January 19-25.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced
today that Even had been selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week for
the second time this indoor season, and that for the third time this winter
Marden had been picked as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. Even had
previously been honored on December 15 while Marden was cited on December 15 and
January 12.
Even picked up his award for his performance Saturday at the Reggie Poyau
Memorial Invitational held at Brandeis University. Even won the grueling 1,000
meters with a time of 2 minutes, 35.02 seconds, and placed sixth in the mile
with a time of 4:25.17. Both times qualified Even for the upcoming New England
Division III Championships.
Marden continued his impressive rookie season at the Poyau Memorial
Invitational by winning his third triple jump competition of the season. Marden
covered 13.27 meters (43-6 1/2) to win the competition by nearly two feet (59
centimeters or 23 1/4 inches).
Led by the efforts of Even and Marden, Southern Maine finished fourth among
the 10 teams competing at the event.
The Huskies return to action this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in their first home
event of the indoor season, the USM Co-ed Invitational, at the USM Field House.

USM Fourth at Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and
field team won three events en route to a fourth place finish Saturday at the
Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational held at Brandeis University.
Sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham,
Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) each won an
individual event Saturday to help the Huskies collect 94.50 points. Worcester
Polytechnic Institute won the team title with 158.50 points, followed by Bowdoin
College with 137 points and Bates College with 117 points.
Gobbi won the 400 meters with a time of 52.15 seconds, and later finished
second in the 200 meters with his time of 23.60. Even captured the 1,000 meters
with a time of 2:35.02, and was sixth in the mile crossing the line in 4:25.17.
Those times qualify Even for the New England Division III Championships in both
events. Marden won his third triple jump competition of the season with a leap
of 13.27 meters (43-6 1/2).
Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) took second place in the 3,000 meters
with a New England Division III Championships qualifying time of 8:47.05. Gomes
also ran a leg of the Huskies' 4 x 800-meter relay that finished third with a
time of 8:28.28.
Sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) paced four Huskies
scoring in the high jump with his third place finish after clearing 1.86 meters
(6-1 1/4). Sophomore Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) tied for
fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.80 meters (5-10 3/4).
Sophomore Sammy Neang (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) earned a fourth place
finish behind Marden and two other jumpers in the triple jump with an effort of
12.33 meters (40-5 1/2). Sophomore Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering)
earned a fourth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.18 seconds
in the final.
The Huskies will have their first home meet of the indoor season next
Saturday when they host the USM Co-ed Invitational at the USM Field House.

Mattia Zagon Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) of the
University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team has been named
the Little East Conference Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for the week of
January 12-18. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference,
made the announcement Monday.
Competing at the Bowdoin College Invitational, Zagon won the long jump with
a leap of 6.37 meters (20-10 3/4). That mark qualifies Zagon for the New
England Division III Championships in February. Zagon also placed second in the
55-meter dash with a finals time of 6.81 seconds, and was judged third in the
200 meters with a time of 23.61.
This is the first time this season that Zagon has been recognized by the
LEC with one of its four weekly awards.
Southern Maine will travel on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) to compete in the
Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational at Brandeis University.

USM Second at Bowdoin Invitational
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track
and field team won four events Saturday en route to a second place finish at a
three-team meet held at Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College.
Host Bowdoin won the meet scoring 81.50 points. Southern Maine tallied
63.50 points and Brandeis University followed with 36 points.
Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) won the 600 meters
with his time of 1 minute, 25.06 seconds. That time also qualifies Even for the
New England Division III Championships in February.
Freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) won the long jump with a
leap of 6.37 meters (20-10 3/4). Zagon, who had the fastest in time in the 55-
meter dash trials, took second place in the finals with a time of 6.81 seconds,
and was judged third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.61. Zagon's long jump
mark qualified him for the N.E. Division III meet.
Freshman A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) took the triple jump with
a season-best mark of 13.56 meters (44-6). He also placed third in the 55-meter
hurdles with a time of 8.35.
Freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) captured the
top spot in the pole vault clearing 3.95 meters (12-11 1/2).
The Huskies 4 x 800-meter relay team also won its event with a time of
8:33.29.

Gomes, Marden Sweep LEC Rookie of the Week Honors

indoor track and field team have swept the weekly Little East Conference Rookie
of the Week honors for their performances at the 40th Annual Dartmouth College
Relays.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that freshmen Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and A.J. Marden (Victory,
Vt./St. Johnsbury) have been selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week
and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week respectively.
This is the second time during the indoor season that Marden has been
recognized by the LEC. He previously was named the Field Athlete of the Week on
December 15. This is Gomes first indoor track citation. The 2008 LEC men's
cross country Rookie of the Year, Gomes was named the men's cross country Rookie
of the Week five times during the fall season.
At the Dartmouth Relays, Gomes was the highest placing USM competitor,
finishing second in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15 minutes, 43.70 seconds.
Marden took third in the triple jump with a best effort of 13.46 meters (44-2).
USM placed sixth among the 28 scoring teams with 28 points. Host Dartmouth
won the team title with 114 points, followed by the University of Massachusetts
Lowell with 47 points and the University of Ottawa with 46 points. Keene State
College and Boston College tied for fourth with 34 points.

USM Opens New Year with Sixth Place Finish at Dartmouth Relays
HANOVER, N.H. -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track
and field team opened the New Year's half of its 2008-2009 schedule with an
excellent showing Sunday at the 40th Annual Dartmouth College Relays held in
Hanover, N.H.
USM placed sixth among the 28 scoring teams with 28 points. Host
Dartmouth won the team title with 114 points, followed by the University of
Massachusetts Lowell with 47 points and the University of Ottawa with 46
points. Keene State College and Boston College tied for fourth with 34
points.
The Huskies picked up 15 points in the 5,000 meters as freshman Alex
Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) took second place with his time of 15 minutes, 43.70
seconds, followed by classmate John Vallo (Wells, Maine) in third with a time
of 15:53.81. Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) finished
sixth with a time of 16:00.65.
Freshmen A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) took third in the
triple jump with a best effort of 13.46 meters (44-2) and Orion Winkler
(Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was fifth in the pole vault clearing
4.12 meters (13-6 1/4). Sophomores Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) tied for
fourth place and Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) was sixth in
the high jump. Davis tied with Conor Shelly of Boston College as each
cleared 6-2 while Fogell jumped 6-0.
Southern Maine also picked up a point in the 4 x 400-meter relay with
its time of 3:31.90.
Among the outstanding non-scoring performances turned in Sunday, junior
Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) reached the finals of the 60-meter dash and
finished eighth with his finals time of 7.32 seconds. Freshman Tim Even
(Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was 16th among the 48 competitors in the
800 meters with his time of 1:59.79.
The Huskies will be back in action this coming Saturday (12:00 p.m.)
when they travel to the Bowdoin College Invitational.

A.J. Marden Named ECAC Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) of the
University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team has been named
the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III Field Athlete of the
Week for his outstanding performance at last Saturday's Preseason Invitational
held at Bowdoin College. The honor was announced Wednesday afternoon by the
ECAC office in Centerville, Mass.
Marden, who also was named Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Week
on Monday, collected his citation for winning the triple jump with an effort of
13.32 meters (43-8 1/2). That mark also qualifies him for the New England
Division III Championships in February and the ECAC Division III Championships
in March.
Southern Maine edged Bowdoin, 72-67, to win the three-team meet.
USM is off for the next four weeks for semester exams and the holidays.

Southern Maine Edges Bowdoin at Preseason Invitational
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track
and field team edged Bowdoin College, 72-67, to win the Preseason Invitational
meet held at Farley Field House Saturday. St. Joseph’s College also
participated and scored a single point.
Junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) had a strong day in the sprints winning
the 55 and 200-meter dashes. McKeon posted a winning time of 6.68 seconds in
the 55 and 23.26 in the 200. Both times improved upon his New England Division
III Championships qualifying marks turned in last week at the Northeastern
Winter Carnival.
Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine) won the 800 meters with a time of
2:02.19, and combined with classmates John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) and Alex Gomes
(Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) to win the
distance medley relay (1200, 400, 800, mile) with a time of 10:39.06.
Freshman AJ Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) took the top spot in the
triple jump with a best effort of 13.32 meters (43-8 1/2). That mark qualifies
Marden for the New England Division III meet in February and the ECAC Division
III Championships in March.
Other winners for USM on Saturday included junior Will Fulford (Kennebunk,
Maine) in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:13.61, sophomore Evan Davis (Fair
Haven, Vt.) in high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters (6-0), freshman Orion
Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) in the pole vault by clearing 4.04
meters (13-3) and sophomore Tyler Lenois (Colraine, Mass./Mohawk Trail) in the
long jump with a leap of 5.72 meters (18-9 1/4).
The Huskies will break for exams and the holidays before returning to

Southern Maine Opens Season at NU Husky Winter Carnival
BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field
team opened its 2008-09 season Saturday afternoon competing at the Northeastern
University Husky Winter Carnival held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) had a good day for the Huskies posting
qualifying times for the New England Division III Championship in two events.
In the 55-meter dash, McKeon tripped the timer in 6.74 seconds to post the ninth
fastest time among the 95 competitors. He later had a time of 23.37 seconds in
the 200 meters to finish 22nd among 111 finishers.
Freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) had a third place
finish in the 800-meter run posting a time of 2:01.16.
Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) had a top ten finish
in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:53.28.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels
to Brunswick Maine, to compete in the Preseason Invitational hosted at Bowdoin
