Keene State Defeats Southern Maine 15-2
KEENE, N.H. -- The Keene State College men's lacrosse team concluded its
regular season with a 15-2 victory over Little East Conference rival the
University of Southern Maine at the Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Keene State (9-2, 5-1) will be the second seed in the upcoming LEC
tournament and receive a first-round bye. The Owls will host a semifinal game
on Thursday with an opponent and time to be determined. Southern Maine
completes its season with a 4-12 (0-6) mark.
Keene State got three goals from senior midfielder Ryan Hazelton (Chester,
N.H.) and senior attack Peter Lauranzano (Beverly, Mass.) and took advantage of
a smothering defense to keep the Huskies at bay all afternoon.
Leading 2-0 after the first quarter on goals by senior attack Tony Santa Fe
(Derry, N.H.) and Hazelton, KSC went ahead 4-0 at the break on a pair of
unassisted goals by Lauranzano.
The Owls broke the game open with six unanswered goals in the third
quarter. KSC scored three goals in a span of a minute to go up 7-0.
Santa Fe and freshman attack Ryan Doherty (East Lyme, Conn.) netted two
goals each and junior midfielder Rodney Arganese (Trumbull, Conn.), freshmen
attacks Josh Nugent (Cheshire, Conn.), Kevin Donahue (Redding, Conn.) and Dan
Werney (Somers, N.Y.), and sophomore attack Josh Luft (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.)
also found the back of the net for KSC.
Sophomore attack Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine) and senior attack Shane
Billings (North Berwick, Maine) scored fourth quarter goals for USM.
Keene State won 16 of 19 face-offs and outshot the Huskies 42-8.
Senior goalie Matt Johnson (Derry, N.H.) played the first three quarters,
not allowing a goal and making five saves. Senior Billy Brooks (Lewiston, Maine)
and freshman Alex Corliss (Waltham, Mass.) saw action in the fourth quarter.
Corliss made one save.
Junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) was very busy in goal for
the Huskies, finishing the game with 17 saves.

UNE Rallies in Fourth to Edge Southern Maine 9-8
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Dan Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Academy at
Claremont) scored with 41.7 seconds remaining in regulation time to cap a four-
goal rally in the final eight minutes and give the University of New England a
9-8 win over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference men's lacrosse
game Thursday afternoon at Hodgdon Field.
The win was the second straight for the Nor'easters and lifts their overall
record to 4-11. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak snapped and slide
to 4-11 overall.
Trailing 8-5, Leyden began the Nor'easters rally scoring off an assist from
freshman Steve Smith (Walpole, Mass.) with 8:07 to play. Freshman Luke DiFiore
(Gloucester, Mass.) cut the deficit to one at 5:09, and junior Bobby Labbe
(Lewiston, Maine) drew the Nor'easters even with 2:30 to go. Leyden got the
game winner coming from behind the cage and beating USM junior goalie James
Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) as two USM defenders checked him.
Southern Maine built its three-goal cushion outscoring UNE 3-0 in the third
quarter. Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus), sophomore Alex Pleau
(Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) and senior Matt Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg
Academy) had the goals. After Soule's goal, the Huskies offense could not beat
UNE junior goalie Andy Briggs (Scituate, R.I./LaSalle Academy) over the final 21
minutes. Briggs made seven of his 14 saves over that span.
The first half was the tale of two quarters. UNE went out to a 4-1 lead in
the first quarter with Leyden scoring twice. The second period belong to USM
with Gilbert scoring twice, Pleau and senior Rob Dorr (Evanston, Ill./Kimball
Union) once each to counter the lone UNE goal by Leyden and leave the teams tied
at halftime 5-5.
Suriyodorn finished the game making 18 saves. Gilbert finished with four
goals and two assists while Pleau had two goals and one assist.
Leyden had a six-point game with five goals and one assist. Smith finished
with two assists.
Southern Maine will travel to Keene, N.H., on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) to play
Little East Conference rival Keene State College in its season finale. UNE will
host Nichols College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a Commonwealth Coast Conference
game.

Southern Maine Pulls Away from Thomas 11-5
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored six
unanswered goals to close the game and defeat the visiting Thomas College
Terriers 11-5 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Tuesday afternoon at
Hodgdon Field.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies and lifts their overall
record to 4-10. The Terriers had their three-game winning streak snapped and
fall to 7-5.
Five USM players had two goals in the game - juniors Lee Gauthier (Berwick,
Maine/Noble) and Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus), senior Matt Soule
(Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), sophomore Mike Bartolucci (Brewster,
Mass./Nauset) and freshman Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine). Gilbert also had
three assists.
Junior Mike Ross (York, Maine) had for goals for the Terriers. Sophomore
Keegan Curtain had the other Terrier goal.
Tied at 5-5 after Ross's fourth goal of the game with 7:39 to play in the
third quarter, the Huskies took the lead for good on a goal by Gassman.
Gilbert, Gauthier and Bartolucci netted goals within a span of 47 seconds midway
into the fourth to make the score 9-5. Pleau and Gilbert finished off the
scoring with goals 31 seconds apart.
Trailing 4-3 at halftime, Ross tied the game at 4-4 for the Terriers with
11:01 left in the third quarter. Bartolucci regained the lead for USM 46
seconds later.
USM junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished the game with
12 saves, five coming in the final quarter. Freshman Josh Collelo was credited
with 13 saves in the Thomas cage.
Southern Maine will play its final home game of the season on Thursday
(4:00 p.m.) when the University of New England visits Hodgdon Field. Thomas
finished its regular season and moves into the North Atlantic Conference
tournament this Saturday against Castleton State College.

Southern Maine Overwhelms Mitchell 18-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) scored a
single-game record 12 points as the University of Southern Maine overwhelmed
under-manned Mitchell College 18-1 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game
Saturday afternoon at Hodgdon Field in Gorham.
The win stops a six-game losing slide for the Huskies and lifts their
overall record to 3-10. The Pequots, who dressed only 14 players for the game,
dropped their eight straight to fall to 1-9.
In the process of setting a school single-game record for points, Gilbert
tied the single-game records for goals (6, done six times previously) and
assists (6, by Nick Rich in April 2002). Gilbert scored all six of his goals in
the first half to help the Huskies build a 12-0 lead. His 12-point effort
eclipses the previous mark of nine points set last season by Tyler Mayberry.
For USM, junior Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble) added five goals and one
assist. Senior Matt Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) added three goals,
and sophomore Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) chipped in two. Senior
Shane Billings (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) had three assists.
Freshman Jeff Dineen (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) had the lone goal for the
Pequots off an assist from rookie Tim Goldberg (Southington, Conn.).
Junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) was credited with six saves
for Southern Maine. Sophomore Shane Gray (North Yarmouth, Maine/Hebron Academy)
made 18 stops for Mitchell.
Southern Maine hosts Thomas College on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-
conference game. Mitchell travels to Johnson State College on Wednesday (3:30
p.m.).

Plymouth State Overpowers Southern Maine 20-4
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) had a team-high six
points on three goals and three assists, including the 100th of his career, as
Plymouth State University overpowered the University of Southern Maine, 20-4, in
Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at Hodgdon Field
in Gorham.
The Panthers won their second straight conference game to improve to 7-4
overall and 2-3 in LEC play. The Huskies dropped their sixth straight to fall
to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The Panthers scored the first eight goals, of the game, including three by
Krinsky, and were up 12-2 at halftime. After a fairly even third quarter, the
Panthers outscored the Huskies 6-1 in the fourth quarter to account for the
final tally.
Krinsky picked up his 100th career assist on a goal by sophomore Adam
Rothbart (Portland, Maine) with 2:47 left in the third quarter. He is the fifth
player in PSU history to reach the 100-career assist plateau. With the six-
point effort, Krinsky now has 91 goals and 101 assists in his career.
Senior Tony Aguiar (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin) and sophomore Tim Hadley
(New London, N.H./Kearsarge) each registered three goals for the Panthers.
Rothbart, sophomores Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) and Brian Giroux
(Wolfeboro Falls, N.H./Brewster Academy) and freshman Andrew Eriksen (Beverly,
Mass.) scored two goals apiece.
For the Huskies, senior Shane Billings (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), junior
Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus), freshman Tyler Martin (Lisbon, Maine/St.
Dominic) and senior Matt Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) each scored
once. Gilbert and Billings also had an assist.
Freshmen goalies Billy Morgan (Winchester, Mass.) and Kevin Hayes (Beverly,
Mass.) each played a half for the Panthers. Morgan was credited with four saves
and Hayes made two stops. Junior James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) made 11
saves for the Huskies.
Southern Maine will host Mitchell College on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) at
Hodgdon Field. Plymouth State is at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game.

N.E. College Pulls Away in 2nd Half, Downs Southern Maine 11-3
PORTLAND, Maine -- The New England College Pilgrims scored eight
unanswered goals in the second half en route to an 11-3 victory over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's lacrosse game
Monday night at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.
The win was the second in the last three game for the Pilgrims and lifts
them to 3-8 overall. The Huskies dropped their fifth straight to slide to 2-9
overall. The game was originally scheduled to be played at NEC, but was moved
to Fitzpatrick Stadium because of field conditions at the Henniker, N.H., based
school.
Seniors Carlos Gutierrez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Corey Love (Rochester,
N.Y.) paced the NEC offense with three goals apiece. Sophomore Colin Gordon
(Manchester, Mass.) and senior Pat Mellilo (Wallingford, Conn.) each had two
goals, and senior Dillon Lantz (Woodstock, Vt.) had a goal and two assists.
Sophomore goalie Nick Fischer (South Burlington, Vt.) was credited with six
saves before giving way to classmate Richard Newcomb (Portland, Maine) with two
minutes to play. Newcomb had one stop.
Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) led the Huskies with a goal
and two assists. Sophomores Josh Reinhold (Tampa, Fla.) and Alex Pleau
(Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) each scored once. Junior netminder James
Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) made 11 stops,
The Pilgrims took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of goals from
Love and one from Gutierrez. The Huskies tied the game before halftime with the
only three goals in the second quarter.
Gutierrez snapped the tied with 12:38 remaining in the third quarter as the
Pilgrims put four shots past Suriyodorn to assume a 7-3 lead after three.
Southern Maine returns to action Thursday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts
Plymouth State University for a Little East Conference game. New England
College is off until Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it travels to Commonwealth Coast
Conference rival Curry College.

UMass Dartmouth Downs Southern Maine 14-7
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's
men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead and went on to defeat
visiting University of Southern Maine, 14-7, in a Little East Conference game at
rainy Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-2 and 2-2 in the Little East Conference with
the victory, while Southern Maine dropped its fourth straight to fall to 2-8 and
0-4 in the LEC.
Sophomore attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, Mass./Danvers) scored twice in
the first quarter for the Corsairs. His first goal, with UMass Dartmouth
enjoying a man advantage, came at 11:19, and he scored with 6:40 left in the
quarter to make it 4-1. Junior defenseman Tarek Donnelly (Danvers, Mass.) and
junior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, Mass.) also scored first-period goals
for UMass Dartmouth.
Freshman midfielder Josh Arsenault (Revere, Mass./Malden Catholic) and
sophomore midfielder Pat Kohout (Leeds, Mass./Northampton) scored for the
Corsairs in the second quarter.
Junior attackman Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) scored the Huskies'
lone goal in the first quarter, and assisted on a goal by sophomore attackman
Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) in the second.
Each team scored four times in the third quarter with Gilbert getting three
for the Huskies, but Kohout, Leary and Foster scored in the fourth quarter to
give UMass Dartmouth a 14-6 advantage with 4:21 remaining. Gilbert added his
fifth goal of the game in the final two minutes to account for the final tally.
Foster led the Corsair attack with three goals and two assists, Arsenault,
Kohout and Leary each scored twice, and freshman attackman Tim Walsh (Medford,
Mass./Malden Catholic) scored once and added four assists. Gilbert finished with
five goals and two assists for the Huskies, while Pleau scored twice.
The Corsairs out shot Southern Maine, 42-34. Senior goalkeeper Steve Chase
(Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) made 10 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while junior
James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) made 13 saves for the Huskies.
The Corsairs will return to action when they host Emerson College Wednesday
(4:00 p.m.), while Southern Maine will host New England College Monday (7:00
p.m.) at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.

UMass Boston Fends Off Southern Maine 9-6
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman attackman John Canty (Milton, Mass.) scored a
game-high six goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons to a
9-6 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East
Conference men's lacrosse game Thursday afternoon at Hodgdon Field in Gorham.
The victory snapped a five-game losing skid for the Beacons who improve to
2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Huskies lost their third straight to
fall to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the LEC.
For the Beacons, senior Nick Thomo (Brookfield, Mass./St. Peter Marian)
contributed two goals, sophomore John Ruiz (Longmeadow, Mass.) had a goal and an
assist, and freshman Jared Kinch (Cohasset, Mass./BC High) had two assists.
Sophomore goalie Aaron Pollock (Belmont, Mass.) stopped 12 shots.
Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) and sophomore Josh Reinhold
(Tampa, Fla./South Kent) each had two goals for Southern Maine. Junior James
Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) was credited with 11 saves.
Canty had three goals in the first quarter as the teams played to a 3-3
stalemate. Gilbert scored twice and Reinhold once for USM.
Canty and Thomo found the net in the first five minutes for the second
quarter to give the Beacons a 5-3 edge. Reinhold's second goal, coming with
2:38 to play in the quarter, made it 5-4 at halftime.
Senior long-stick midfielder Rob Dorr (Gorham, Maine/Kimball Union) tied
the game for USM at 5-5 early in the third quarter. Thomo broke the tie with
8:40 left in the third, and Canty pushed the lead to 7-5 with a man-up goal.
Junior Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble) got credit for USM's final goal that
went in off a UMB defender with 3:51 to play in the quarter.
Ruiz and Canty had the only goals in the final quarter.
Southern Maine travels on Saturday (1:00 P.m.) to the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth for a critical Little East Conference game. UMass
Boston is at home on Saturday (1:00 pm.) hosting Plymouth State University in an
LEC game.

USM Announces Schedule Change For New England College Game
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics
announced today the following schedule change for next week's men's lacrosse
game with New England College.
Due to unplayable field conditions at New England College and no available
alternative sites in the Henniker, N.H., area, the game is being moved to
Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine, and will be played on Monday, April 14.
Game time is 7:00 p.m.

Brooks Leads Colby Past Southern Maine 10-5
PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior Caddy Brooks (Darien, Conn./Salisbury School)
scored six goals to lead the Colby College Mules to a 10-5 win over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's lacrosse game
Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.
The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Mules and lifts their
overall record to 6-3. The Huskies dropped their second straight to slide to
2-6 overall.
Brooks snapped a 5-5 stalemate scoring his third goal of the game with 8:49
to go in the third quarter. The junior attackman scored again with 3.4 seconds
left in the third quarter, and the first two goals of the fourth quarter as the
Mules pulled away from the under-manned Huskies.
For Colby, sophomore Whit McCarthy (Darien, Conn.) had three goals and an
assist. Senior Dana McNally (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) dished off four
assists. Senior Tim Patch (Reading, Mass./Belmont Hill) and sophomore Tom
Gianakos (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms) split the goalie chores for Colby with
each making three saves.
Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) led the Southern Maine
offense with a goal and two assists. Junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park,
N.Y.) played another strong game making 20 saves.
Southern Maine led 3-2 after one quarter on goals by freshman Tyler Martin
(Lisbon, Maine/St. Dominic), senior Shane Billings (North Berwick, Maine/Noble)
and Gilbert. McCarthy and Brooks tallied for Colby.
McCarthy tied the game at 3-3 with a man-up goal early in the second

Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 14-4
DANBURY, Conn. -- Western Connecticut State University scored eight
unanswered goals in the first and second periods and never looked back to defeat
the University of Southern Maine, 14-4, Sunday afternoon at the WestConn
Athletic Complex.
With this afternoon's victory, the Colonials’ record now stands at 6-4 on
the season (2-1 in the LEC), while the Huskies fall to 2-5 (0-2 LEC).
Senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, Conn.), sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip
Terrace, N.Y.), and senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, Conn.) each contributed three
goals in the Colonials’ victory. Also scoring for Western Conn. were sophomore
Adam Lanehart (Redding, Conn.) with two goals, and junior Vincent Bevilacqua
(Branford, Conn.), freshman Mike Barnao ( Sayville, N.Y.), and sophomore Kirk
Zachary (East Islip, N.Y.) who each scored once. Lanehart led the Colonials
with three assists.
Leading the attack for Southern Maine was sophomore Josh Reinhold (Tampa,
Fla.) with two goals. Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine) and senior Matt
Soule (Denmark, Maine) each scored one goal in a losing effort for the Huskies.
Southern Maine scored the game's first goal on an unassisted shot by
Reinhold at the 11:23 mark of the first period, but the Huskies were then held
scoreless for the remainder of the first half.
Western Connecticut's first goal was scored by Andrew Barbieri, assisted by
junior Terry Stroz (Monroe, Conn.), less than one minute later. The Colonials
would score four more goals in the first, and shut out the Huskies by the count
of 3-0 in the second to take an 8-1 lead at intermission.
The Colonials scored on the first possession of the second half on a
beautiful pass from Skarda to Pac and closed out the period with a commanding
12-3 lead. The game's final goal was scored at the 8:07 mark of the fourth
period when Lanehart took a pass from Barnao and found the back of the net to
make the final score 14-4.
Freshman goalie Chris Frappier (Watertown, Conn.) earns his first win of
the season after making five saves in goal for Western Conn., while junior James
Suriyodorn (Deer Park, NY) made 16 saves and takes the loss for Southern Maine.
Southern Maine will host Colby College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) at
Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. Western Conn. hosts Mitchell College at the
WestConn Athletic Complex on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).

Southern Maine Downs Maine Maritime 11-5
CASTINE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine scored six unanswered
goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Maine Maritime Academy, 11-5, in a non-
conference men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Ritchie Field in Castine,
Maine.
The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Huskies and lifts their
overall record to 2-4. The Mariners fall back to 3-3.
Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) led the Southern Maine
offense with two goals and three assists. Senior Matt Soule (Denmark,
Maine/Fryeburg Academy), junior Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble), and
sophomores Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) and Josh Reinhold (Tampa,
Fla./South Kent) each scored two goals and had one assist. Junior goalie James
Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished with 10 saves.
Freshmen Todd Murphy (Middlesex, Maine) and Wade Mondoux (Berwick, Maine)
scored two goals apiece for the Mariners. Senior Garrett Lake (Farmington,
Maine) had a goal and three assists. Senior Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, Maine)
stopped eight shots.
The Mariners tied the score at 5-5 with 13:48 to play on Murphy's second
goal before the Huskies found the net six straight times. Gilbert got what
proved to be the game-winning goal, off a feed from Soule, with 12:01 left.
USM added three goals in a span of 1:13 to open a 9-5 lead. Soule and
Reinhold scored 30 seconds apart, and Pleau tallied 43 seconds after Reinhold to
give the visitors some breathing room. Gauthier and freshman Chris Gassman
(Kennebunk, Maine) added two insurance goals later in the quarter.
Neither team found the net in the opening quarter as Suriyodorn and Jones
stopped four and two shots respectively. Reinhold's first goal of the game with
2:19 left in the second quarter provided the Huskies with a 3-2 advantage at
halftime.
The teams matched goals in the third quarter. Mondoux tied the game at
11:32, but Soule restored the Huskies lead 17 seconds later. Lake equalized at
10:31, and the game remained tied until 22 seconds were left when Gauthier
scored off a feed from Gilbert.
Southern Maine hits the road on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Western
Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference game. Maine Maritime
will play at Castleton State College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).

Eastern Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 11-2 in LEC Opener
PORTLAND, Maine -- Senior Pete Hamilton (Rutland, Vt.) scored a game-high
three goals and one assist to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University
Warriors to an 11-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies
Saturday afternoon in the teams Little East Conference opener played at
Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.
The win was the fourth straight for the Warriors who get back to the .500
mark at 4-4. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight to slide to 1-4 overall.
Junior Matt Savage (Southington, Conn.), senior Tyler Prescott (Norwalk,
Conn.) and rookie Eric Vasil (Southington, Conn.) each had two goals for the
Warriors.
Sophomore Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) scored both Southern
Maine goals.
Hamilton put the Warriors on the board with their first shot of game 47
seconds into the first quarter. Pleau tied the scored eight minutes later off a
feed from junior Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble).
Vasil gave the Warriors the lead for good with 5:08 to go in the quarter.
Prescott and Hamilton would find the net before the end of the quarter to make
4-1 after 15 minutes.
The second quarter belong to the Warriors as Savage scored two, and Vasil
and Prescott each tally one, to make it 8-1 at halftime.
Hamilton had the only goal of the third quarter. EC freshmen Pat Gority
(Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jeremy Cogliano (Bedford, Mass.) book ended Pleau's
second goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final tally.
Junior goalie Kyle Savage (Southington, Conn.) stopped 12 shots in the
Eastern Conn. cage before giving way to freshman Stephen Goomrigian (Norwalk,
Conn.) late in the fourth. Junior James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) had 22
saves for Southern Maine.
Southern Maine looks to snap its losing skid Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) when it
travels to Castine, Maine to play Maine Maritime Academy. Eastern Conn. will

Salem State Defeats Southern Maine 9-4
SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Ross Arnold (Salem, Mass.) passed out five assists
to pace the Salem State College Vikings to a 9-4 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game Tuesday
afternoon.
The win was the fourth straight for the Vikings who improve to 4-1 overall.
The Huskies dropped their third straight game to fall to 1-3.
Junior Scott Aronian (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Luke Metraw
(Chelmsford, Mass.) each had a pair of goals for the Vikings.
Southern Maine received goals from junior Preston Gilbert (Saco,
Maine/Cheverus), freshman Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine), and seniors Matt
Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and Shane Billings (North Berwick,
Maine/Noble).
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie as Gilbert and Salem State senior Alex
Verity (Hyde Park, Mass./Catholic Memorial) traded goals.
Metraw and sophomore Justin Jones (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) found the
net in the second period to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Salem State scored five consecutive goals in the third and fourth quarters
to build an 8-1 before USM rallied for three straight goals from Soule, Billings
and Gassman to cut the margin to four with 3:42 to play.
Freshman goalie Greg Gaudet (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) was credited with
15 saves for Salem State. Junior Jamie Mitchell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle)
stopped 15 shots for USM.

Curry Downs Southern Maine 7-2
MILTON, Mass. -- Senior CJ Metz (Marshfield, Mass./St. Thomas More)
scored four goals to lead the Curry College Colonels to a 7-2 victory over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's lacrosse game
Friday afternoon.
The win was the second straight for the Colonels and evened their season
record at 2-2. The Huskies dropped their second straight to fall to 1-2 on the
season.
Curry built a 2-0 lead with the only goals in the first period coming from
the crosses of sophomore Paul Marchese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Metz. Metz
scored a pair of man-up goals, both assisted by freshman John O’Donnell
(Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) in the second period to increase the
margin to 4-0.
Southern Maine got on the board late in the second period on an unassisted
goal by junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus).
The Colonels scored twice in the opening minute of the third period to take
a 6-1 lead. Senior Ryan Rooney (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and Metz tallied
the goals. O’Donnell picked up his third assist on the Rooney goal which came
while the Colonels were a man up.
USM freshman Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine), assisted by sophomore Josh
Reinhold (Tampa, Fla./South Kent), and Rooney traded goals in the final seven
minutes of the third period to account for the remainder of the scoring.
Senior Alex MacMillan (Framingham, Mass.) made 11 saves in goal for Curry
while junior James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) was credited with 13 saves for
Southern Maine.
The Colonels converted 3-of-13 man-up situations while the Huskies went
0-for-7 when a man up.
Southern Maine travels to Salem State College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).

Bates Downs Southern Maine 19-3
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College defeated the University of Southern Maine
19-3 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Tuesday at Campus Avenue Field. The
game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was moved up to Tuesday due to
forecasts of a storm.
Tyler Moore (North Andover, Mass.) and Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.) led 12
Bobcats in the scoring column with three goals apiece. Brent Morin (Hanover,
N.H.), Alex Cronstein (New York, N.Y.) and Nathan Kellogg (Natick Mass.) added
two goals apiece. Chris Cruise (Centerville, Mass.) and Les Wade (Randolph,
N.J.) both recorded a pair of assists.
Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine) scored two goals and added an assist for the
Huskies (1-1). Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine) also scored for USM, and Thomas
Boothby (Kennebunk, Maine) had an assist.
USM goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded a number of
outstanding saves, collecting 20 in all while facing 52 shots from Bates. He
kept the Huskies competitive early on. Bates led after the first quarter 4-0
despite a 15-1 disparity in shots taken. Three Bates goalies -- Will Paddock
(Denver, Colo.), Hunter Mulligan (Hunting Valley, Ohio) and first-year Peem
Chatikavanij (Bangkok, Thailand) -- combined for six saves.
The Bobcats had a 52-16 advantage in shots, a 49-25 edge in ground balls, a
16-10 edge in faceoffs, and the Bobcats converted on a season-best 4 of 7 extra-
man opportunities.
After Simon got the Bobcats on the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the game
with an unassisted tally, Bates steadily built its lead to 8-0 with 8:56 left in
the second quarter, with two Moore goals, one of them on a power play.
Gauthier got the Huskies on the board with 8:17 left in the second quarter,
making it 8-1, and Gilbert answered Morin's second goal of the game with an
unassisted tally to make it 9-2 with 1:03 left in the half. Nick Woods
(Greenwich, Conn.) scored with seven seconds left in the quarter to put Bates up
10-2 at the half.
Cronstein opened the third quarter with a goal from Sean O'Brien (Ballston
Lake, N.Y.), and Bates increased the lead with a pair of man-up goals by Will
Akie (Dedham, Mass.) and Simon. After Gilbert scored again for the Huskies to
close it to 13-3 with 3:14 left in the third quarter, Kellogg fought for two
consecutive unassisted goals to make it 15-3 at the start of the final quarter.
Bates will play host to Amherst College in a NESCAC matchup Saturday (2:00
p.m.). Southern Maine plays at Curry College Friday (3:00 p.m.).

Keene State Owls Preseason Pick to Repeat in Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Keene State College earned all six possible first
place votes and 36 total points in the 2008 Little East Conference Men's
Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll, released by the conference office this
afternoon. The Owls finished five points ahead of the 2007 Little East
Conference Championship Tournament finalists, Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors.
All seven head coaches in the Little East Conference cast a vote, but could
not select their own squads. The Panthers received the final first place ballot.
Under the direction of Head Coach Mark Theriault, Keene State College
hoisted the program's second Little East Conference Championship Tournament
trophy last season, earning the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament
field. Last spring, the Owls posted an overall record of 16-1, including
sweeping the conference circuit with a 6-0 mark. Keene State advanced to the
second round of the NCAA Tournament, where the Owls dropped their lone contest
of the campaign. Theriault welcomes back four All-Little East Conference first-
team selections, including the 2007 Defensive Player of Year Matt Johnson.
Eastern Connecticut State University begins the 2008 season trying to
capture the program's sixth Little East Conference Tournament Championship in
the eight-year history of the conference. First-year Head Coach Justin Axel is
making his collegiate debut as a head boss, becoming the fourth men's lacrosse
coach to walk the Warriors sidelines. In 2007, Eastern Connecticut placed second
in the conference standings with a 5-1 mark. The Warriors return five All-Little
East Conference picks, including three first-team honorees.
Western Connecticut State University edged Plymouth State University by a
single vote for the third position in the annual poll. The Colonials and
Panthers finished the 2007 conference slate in a three-way tie for third place
with UMass Boston with a 3-3 record. Last spring, Western Connecticut turned in
an overall record of 10-8, while Plymouth State registered an 11-6 mark,
including winning the 2007 ECAC New England Championship Tournament. The Beacons
secured the fifth spot in the poll with 14 total points.
UMass Dartmouth and the University of Southern Maine complete the 2008
preseason coaches' ranking with 13 and six total points, respectively.

Southern Maine Downs St. Joseph's 15-4 in Season Opener
PORTLAND, Maine -- Senior midfielder Matt Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg
Academy) had a career-high five goals as the University of Southern Maine men's
lacrosse team opened the 2008 season posting a 15-4 victory over St. Joseph's
College in a game played Monday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.
The win was the Huskies' first in a season-opening game since 2004. The
game was the first varsity game for the St. Joseph's program.
Junior attack Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and sophomore attack Alex
Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) ably supported Soule scoring four goals
apiece. Junior attack Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) had a goal and
five assists. Junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) made seven
saves.
For St. Joseph's, freshman Kody Peckham (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) had
two goals, including the first in the program's history. Senior Tyler Arsenault
(Kennebunk, Maine) and junior Ryan Prescott (Pittsfield, N.H.) had the other
goals for the Monks. Senior goalie Brendan Dyer (New Gloucester, Maine/St.
Dominic) had 12 saves in the first three quarters while junior Nick Hannon
(Windham, Maine) made two stops in the final quarter.
Soule, who scored four goals in the first half, gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead
just 28 seconds into the contest. The Huskies built a 4-0 lead in the first
quarter, and increased the lead to 7-0 before Peckham put the Monks on the board
with 1:15 to play in the second quarter.
After Arsenault scored early in the third quarter to cut the margin to 7-2,
the Huskies tallied six consecutive goals, including three straight by Gauthier
in the third quarter, to put the game away.
Southern Maine returns to action on March 19 when it travels to Bates
College. St. Joseph's is on the road Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) at Salem State
College.
