Darryl Whitney Named Verizon Academic All-America(r)

	GORHAM, Maine  -- University of Southern Maine senior men's track and cross 
country standout Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) has been named to the 2002-2003 
Verizon Academic All-America(r) College Division Men's Track & Field/Cross Country 
second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America 
(CoSIDA).  Kevin Gilmore, CoSIDA national coordinator for college division men's 
track and field/cross country, made the announcement.
	Whitney is the second USM student-athlete to receive national Academic All-
America(r) honors.  Former field hockey star Alison Drury (Canton, Maine) was named 
to the Women's College Division Fall/Winter At-Large third team in 1999.
Whitney also was one of three USM student-athletes to receive Verizon Academic 
District One honors this spring.  Senior shortstop Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) 
was named to the softball first team while senior pole vaulter Amy Swanberg 
(Lamoine, Maine) was named to the women's track and field/cross country second 
team.
	This past winter, Whitney became the first USM male track athlete to qualify 
for the NCAA indoor track and field championships, competing in the 1500-meter 
run.  He reached the finals where he set a school record with his time of 3:55.95 
to place ninth.
	The holder of eight school records (five indoor and three outdoors) and part 
of two record indoor relays, Whitney has been a Dean's List student every semester 
he attended USM since transferring from Liberty University in the middle of his 
freshman year.  He graduated this spring with a degree in exercise physiology and 
a 3.95 cumulative grade point average.
	During his stellar career, Whitney set school indoor records at 800 meters 
(1:56.72), 1,000 meters (2:29.58), 1500 meters, mile (4:14.92), and 5,000 meters 
(15:11.75).  He holds the outdoor records at 800 meters (1:58.40), 1500 meters 
(4:03.33) and in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:36.54).  He also was the cross 
country team's top runner the past two seasons.
	This past year, Whitney earned All-New England Alliance honors in cross 
country, All-New England Alliance accolades in the 800 and 1500 meters, All-ECAC 
honors in the 1500, and All-State recognition in the 1,000 meters during the 
indoor season, and All-Alliance citations in the 800 and 1500 meters and All-ECAC 
and Division III All-New England honors in the steeplechase outdoors.
	The Verizon Academic All-America(r) program is conducted annually by the 
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  To be nominated by 
their respective schools, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.20 
cumulative grade point average and be a starter or important reserve with 
legitimate athletic credentials. The CoSIDA Academic All-America(r) college division 
is comprised of schools from NCAA Divisions Two and Three and all NAIA schools.
	CoSIDA selects Verizon Academic All-America(r) teams in 12 programs:  football, 
women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's 
basketball, baseball, softball, men's track and field/cross country, women's track 
and field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.

USM's Darryl Whitney Named to Verizon Academic Team

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) of the University of 
Southern Maine Huskies men's cross country and track and field program has been 
named to the 2003 Verizon Academic District One College Division Men's Cross 
Country/Track and Field Team as selected by the College Sports Information 
Directors of America (CoSIDA).  The District One team was announced Thursday.
	Athletes named to the academic district first team in each of the eight 
CoSIDA districts advance to the Verizon National Academic All-America ballot.
	Whitney is the first member of the USM men's cross country/track and field 
program to be named to the Verizon Academic District One team.  He is the third 
USM student-athlete to receive Verizon Academic District One honors this spring.

Whitney Takes Fifth Place in Steeplechase at ECAC Meet

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) of the University of 
Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team closed out his brilliant 
collegiate career Friday by finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships held at the 
Steinbrenner Track on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 
Cambridge, Mass.
	Whitney covered the distance in a time of 9:45.94 to finish in fifth place.  
He scored USM's only points in the meet.  Ben Schmeckpeper of M.I.T. won the event 
with his time of 9:22.87.
	Sophomore Chris Roux (Sanford, Maine) was the Huskies' only other competitor 
in the meet.  Roux competed in his second decathlon of the season and scored 5,112 
points to place ninth.

Whitney Sets School Record in Steeplechase

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) of the University of 
Southern Maine men's outdoor track team set a school record in the 3,000-meter 
steeplechase Saturday while competing at the New England Division III Men's 
Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the Russell Street Track and Field 
Complex at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
	Whitney completed the steeplechase in a time of 9:36.54 to shave 0.06 seconds 
off his previous school record time set in April 2002.  He finished sixth overall 
in the event to score three points for the Huskies.
	Sophomore Chris Roux (Sanford, Maine) competed in the decathlon which was 
contested on Thursday and Friday, finishing seventh with 5,118 points.  He earned 
two points for the team.
	Freshman Peter Marsh (Lebanon, Conn.) was the only other USM competitor.  He 
tied for ninth in the pole vault by clearing 3.74 meters (12-3 1/4).
	The Huskies finished with 5.0 points to place 22nd among the 23 teams that 
scored in the championship.  Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the team 
title with 141 points, followed by Williams College with 102 points.  Springfield 
College with 94 points, Bowdoin College with 70 points and Bates College with 69 
points round out the top five.
	Qualified USM competitors are scheduled to compete next weekend at the New 
England championships (all divisions) at the Northeastern University track complex 
in Dedham, Mass.

USM's Chris Roux Finishes Seventh in Decathlon at N.E. Div. III Championships

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Sophomore Chris Roux (Sanford, Maine) of the University of 
the Southern Maine men's outdoor track team finished seventh in the decathlon at 
the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at 
Bates College in Lewiston.
	Roux finished the grueling two-day, ten-event decathlon with 5,118 points to 
place seventh, and pick up two points for the Huskies in the team standings.
	Jason Northrup of Bates won the event with 6,402 points followed by Kristoph 
Becker of Middlebury College with 6,103 points and Scott MacDonald of Colby-Sawyer 
College with 5,707 points.  Northrup and Becker each surpassed the NCAA 
provisional qualifying mark of 6,000 points.

Little East Conference Reschedules Meet to Sunday

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Due to the impending inclement weather forecast for 
Saturday (April 26) in Providence, R.I., the Little East Conference and New 
England Alliance have rescheduled their men's and women's outdoor track and field 
championships to Sunday (April 27).
	The steeplechase will be conducted at Brown University starting at 10:00 a.m.  
The remaining events will take place at Rhode Island College beginning at 11:00 
a.m.
	Schools competing for the Little East title include Eastern Connecticut State 
University, Keene State College, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Rhode 
Island College and the University of Southern Maine.
	The five LEC schools are joined by competing members of the Massachusetts 
State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in the New England Alliance event.

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Today's men's outdoor track meet involving the University 
of Southern Maine, Bowdoin College and Gordon College, scheduled to be run at 
Bates College, has been cancelled.
	The meet, originally scheduled to be held at Bowdoin on Saturday, was shifted 
to Bates due to the snow storm.
	Southern Maine will open its 2003 outdoor season next weekend at the Bates 
College Invitational.
