Gadbois Earns All-America Honors in 110-Meter Hurdles
Sinclair Finishes Ninth in Women’s Javelin

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Trey Gadbois (Portland, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s track and field team became the first
competitor in the history of that program to earn All-American honors outdoors
when he finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon at the 2004
NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Millikin
University in Decatur, Illinois.
Also, USM junior Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook HS) just
missed All-American honors as she finished ninth in the women’s javelin throw
Saturday.
Gadbois, who qualified for Saturday’s national final on Friday with a time
of 14.75 seconds, placed eighth in the finals with a time of 15.08 seconds.
Senior Nicholas Morgan of Albion College won the event with a time of 14.56
seconds.
Times on Saturday were significantly slower than Friday’s trials as the
runners were heading into a two-meter per second head wind.
In becoming the first outdoor track All-American in the history of the USM
men’s program, Gadbois joins junior pole vaulter Wil Snyder (Saco, Maine/San
Benito HS, Hollister, Calif.) as an All-American this year. Snyder, who did not
compete outdoors this spring, earned All-American honors during the indoor
championships in March.
Sinclair advanced to the finals of the javelin on the strength of her throw
of 39.53 meters (129-8) in the preliminary round of throws, but was unable to
improve her standing after the final round of throws and finished ninth. The
top eight finishers earn All-American honors.

Three USM Track Athletes Headed to NCAA Championships
Trey Gadbois First Men's Outdoor Track Qualifier

GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine men's
and women's outdoor track and field teams are headed for Decatur, Illinois, this
week to take part in the 2004 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National
Championships being held at Millikin University.
Freshman Trey Gadbois (Portland, Maine) became the first member of the men's
outdoor team to make the NCAA outdoor championships field. He will participate in
the 110-meter hurdles.
For the second straight year, juniors Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt./Mount Abraham
Union HS) and Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook HS) will represent
the women's team at the national championships and participate in the heptathlon
and the javelin throw respectively.
Gadbois will be among the field of 16 that will run in the hurdles trials
Friday afternoon (4:40 p.m.) seeking to make the finals that take place Saturday
(2:20 p.m.). The freshman standout, who set three individual outdoor records and
tied a fourth, qualified for the championships by running the event in 14.63
seconds in the finals of the Little East Conference and New England Alliance
Championships at Rhode Island College last month.
Brewer, who finished 16th at last year's national championships, made the
field of 18 entries in the two-day, seven-event heptathlon on the strength of her
school record performance of 4,351 points at the recent ECAC Division III
Championships. Competition in the heptathlon begins with the 100-meter hurdles at
noon on Thursday. Other first-day events include the high jump, shot put and 200
meters. Second-day events are the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters.
Sinclair will be among the 18 competitors in the javelin throw that takes
place on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. Presently ranked 10th in the nation, she
qualified for the championships with her school record throw of 42.88 meters (140-
8) at the Spring Fling Invitational held at the USAT National Training Center in
Clermont, Fla., back in March. At last year's nationals, she threw the javelin
37.34 meters (122-6) in the preliminary round, but did not advance to the final
round.
A third member of the women's team, sophomore Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford,
Maine), had provisionally qualified for the championships in the 400-meter
hurdles, but did not make the field of 18 entries. Gadbois also was provisionally
qualified in the triple jump, but did not make that field.

Gadbois Sets Two School Records at ECAC Championship
Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Meet in Triple Jump

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Trey Gadbois (Portland, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team set two
school records and scored in three events while competing at the 2004 ECAC
Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at
Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
In the process, Gadbois provisionally qualified for the upcoming NCAA
Division III National Championships in the triple jump. He previously had
provisionally qualified in the 110-meter hurdles.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Gadbois posted the fastest time in the trails
(14.65 seconds) on Friday. In the finals Saturday, he finished second with a
time of 14.64 seconds, just .01 seconds shy of his school record.
Earlier in the day Saturday, he increased his school record in the triple
jump to 14.19 meters (46-6 ¾) to place second in the event. That distance
exceeded the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 14.10 meters. His previous
record mark was 14.02 meters (46-0).
He concluded his day by finishing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a
school record time of 54.08 seconds, breaking his old mark of 55.26 set two
weeks ago in the New England Division III Championships at the same facility.
His time was just .08 seconds shy of another NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Gadbois personally accounted for all 20 points the Huskies accumulated
during the meet, good for 12th place among the 54 teams that scored points.
Junior Rob Ligouri (Auburn, Maine) competed in the 100-meter dash with a
time of 11.08 seconds in the trials. He just missed advancing to the finals.
Freshman Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) also competed in the 100-meter trials
turning in a time of 11.36 seconds. Freshman Chris Hopkins (North Blackfield,
Mass.) ran in the 1500 meters, coming home with a time of 4:11.82.
The 4 x 100-meter relay quartet of sophomore Chris Jackson (Bath, Maine),
Ligouri, junior Derek Lovely (Oxford, Maine) and Murchie covered the event in a
time of 44.57 seconds.
Gadbois will wait until May 24 for the announcement of the NCAA
Championships field.

USM Huskies Finish 11th at New England Division III Championships

GORHAM, Maine -- Three school record fell Saturday as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team had it best ever finish
at the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at
Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
The Huskies scored 28 points to place 11th among the 25 scoring teams, six
places higher than their previous best finish of 17th at the 2000 championships.
Williams College won the 2004 team title with 142.5 points. Bates College
was a distance with 70 points, followed by M.I.T. with 68 points, Springfield
College with 65.5 points and Tufts University with 59 points.
Freshman Trey Gadbois (Portland, Maine) continued his assault on the USM
record book by breaking his own records in the triple jump and 400-meter hurdles.
Junior Rob Ligouri (Auburn, Maine) set a new mark in the 100-meter dash while
becoming the first runner to run the event in under 11 seconds. Junior Chris Roux
(Sanford, Maine) established a fourth new mark in the decathlon that was contested
Thursday and Friday.
Gadbois scored 17 points in three events during the meet. He finished third
in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.97 seconds in the finals. In the 400-
meter hurdles, he broke his week-old record in the event by 0.79 seconds with his
time of 55.28 to place third. He broke the triple jump record by 17 inches with a
leap of 46-0 (14.02 meters), good for fourth place.
Ligouri eclipsed the old 100-meter record of 11.02 set by Charlie Tarbox in
2000 by 0.05 seconds when he tripped the timer in 10.97 seconds during his trials
heat. He came back in the finals to take third place with a time of 11.16
seconds.
Roux amassed a total 5,347 points during the two-day, ten-event decathlon.
He was a model of consistency, scoring between 501 and 589 points in every event.
He broke the former record of 5,233 set by Jeff Lamirande in 2002.
The only other scoring performance (top eight) was turned in by freshman
Chris Hopkins (North Blackfield, Mass.) in the 1500 meters. Hopkins finished
seventh with a time of 4:01.33.
The Huskies return to action next Friday and Saturday when qualified
competitors will travel to the Northeastern University track and field facility in
Dedham, Mass., to compete in the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships
(all divisions).

Greg Dolbec Receives Wirths Memorial Award

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Greg Dolbec (Newfield,
Maine/ Massabesic HS) has been selected by the Athletics Department coaching staff
and administrative personnel as the 2003-2004 recipient of the Roland Wirths
Memorial Award. The award was presented by USM Assistant Director of Athletics,
Kimberly Turner, at the Athletics Department's recent Senior Awards Night banquet.
The award, presented annually since 1980, is given in honor of the former
Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram sportswriter who was a strong
supporter of USM athletics. It is given to the deserving student-athlete who best
exemplifies the characteristics of Wirths and his writing.
Wirths often wrote about the overachiever, the person small in stature who
made a big difference. He was interested in stories of the heart, people who made
a real difference, or the true leader or inspirational-type player.
The captain of the cross country team last fall, Dolbec was twice selected as
the Little East Conference Runner of the Week. He was among the region's elite
runners until a leg injury in mid-October knocked him out of competition the final
three races, including the NCAA Regional Championship.
Dolbec has overcome a variety of injuries during his career to earn All-
Little East Conference citations on three occasions for indoor track (2000, 2001
and 2003) and three more in outdoor track (2000, 2001 and 2002). A versatile
performer, he ran middle distance and distance events (400 through 1,000 meters
indoors, 400 through 5000 meters outdoors) and competed in the pole vault. He
earned a combined five All-LEC citations in the pole vault.
USM men's cross country and track and field head coach Bruce Bickford, who
was unable to attend the awards banquet because he was traveling to the Little
East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships meet, relayed his thoughts
about Dolbec. He wrote of Dolbec as "one of the toughest, most focused
individuals I've ever had the pleasure to work with. His dedication parallels
none. His decision making in races is flawless. He is one of two athletes that I
have coached in my 20 years of coaching that know how to race. You cannot teach
this. Learning how to race is instinctive, and Greg's got it. There is no
individual or person I respect more for what he has made of himself than Greg."
Dolbec is majoring in business at USM and is expected to graduate in May.

Trey Gadbois Named LEC Field Athlete of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Trey Gadbois (Portland, Maine) of the University
of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team has been named the
Field Athlete of the Week by the Little East Conference in recognition of his
outstanding performance in last weekend's New England Alliance Championships held
at Rhode Island College in Providence. The announcement was made Monday afternoon
by the conference office.
Gadbois won the triple jump with an effort of 44-7 (13.59 meters) to break
his own school record set two weeks ago by one inch. He also took second place
finishes in the long jump with a leap of 21-10 and the high jump by clearing 6-1
1/2.
The standout first-year athlete was just as impressive on the track. He set
school records in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.63 seconds,
breaking his two-week old record of 15.74 by more than a second, and in the 400-
meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 56.07 seconds. That broke the old mark
of 58.46 seconds set in 1999 by Peter Corbett. His time in the 110-meter race is
an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Gadbois was second in the 110-meter race and
third in the 400-meter race.
Gadbois capped off his day running the third leg of the Huskies record-setting 4 x
100-meter relay team. The quartet of sophomore Chris Jackson (Bath, Maine),
freshman Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), Gadbois and junior Rob Ligouri (Auburn,
Maine/Edward Little HS) won the event with a time of 43.21 seconds. The previous
record was 43.95 set in May 2000.
This is the fourth time this year that Gadbois has been recognized by the
Little East Conference. He was picked as either the Track or Field Athlete of the
Week three times during the indoor season.
The Huskies will get back into action this Friday and Saturday (April 30-May
1) when they travel to Williamstown, Mass., to compete in the New England Division
III Championships at Williams College.

National Championships in the 110-meter hurdles while leading the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a third place finish in the New England Alliance
Championships held Saturday at Rhode Island College in Providence.
Gadbois smashed his previous school record (15.74 seconds) in the 110-meter
hurdles by more than one second in the qualifying round when he posted the fastest
time of 14.66 seconds. He came back in the final to lower the mark further with
his time of 14.63 seconds while finishing second. Both times surpassed the NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 14.90 seconds.
In addition, Gadbois placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a school
record time of 56.07 seconds to break the mark of 58.46 seconds established by
Peter Corbett in May 1999. Gadbois won the triple jump with a leap of 44-7 (13.59
meters) to break his two-week old mark in that event by an inch.
Competing in five events, Gadbois also had second place finishes in the high
jump (6-1 1/2) and long jump (21-10).
Other school records set in the meet included freshman Chris Hopkins (North
Blackfield, Mass./St. Peter Marian HS) in the 1500 meters and the 4 x 100-meter
relay.
Hopkins became the first USM runner to go under the four-minute barrier in
the 1500 meters outdoors with his third place time of 3:59.51. Hopkins' time
broke the old mark of 4:02.11 set by Darryl Whitney last season.
The 4 x 100-meter relay quartet of sophomore Chris Jackson (Bath, Maine),
freshman Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), Gadbois and junior Rob Ligouri (Auburn,
Maine/Edward Little HS) won the event with their record time of 43.21 seconds.
The previous record was 43.95 set in May 2000.
Ligouri also picked up a second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of
11.18 seconds and a fifth in the long jump with a jump of 20-0. Murchie had a
pair of fourth place finishes in the 100 meters (11.25) and the 200 meters
(22.63). Hopkins scored with his eighth place finish in the 800 meters (2:00.57).
Westfield State College edge Eastern Connecticut State University by nine
points, 127-118, to take the Alliance title. USM was third with 100 points. The
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (94 points) and Keene State College (84
points) round out the top five. The Alliance championship includes schools from
the Little East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic
Conference.
In the Little East Conference scoring, the Huskies were second behind Eastern
Connecticut, 151-125.
The Huskies return to action Friday and Saturday (April 30-May 1) when they
participate in the New England Division III Championships at Williams College in
Williamstown, Mass.

Jeff Lamirande in 2001.
Overall, Southern Maine tallied 68 points to finish fourth. Springfield
College won the team competition with 216 points, while Bates tallied 206 to place

University of Southern Maine Names Outdoor Track and Field Captains
Huskies Commence 2004 Campaign at Springfield College on Saturday

GORHAM, Maine - Juniors Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine) and Chris Roux
(Sanford, Maine) and sophomore Peter Marsh (Lebanon, Conn.) have been named
captains of the University of Southern Maine Outdoor Track and Field program for
the upcoming 2004 campaign
"Chris, Peter and Mike are among the hardest working, most dedicated and most
talented student athletes in our program," said third-year head coach Bruce
Bickford. "Chris and Peter served as captains during the indoor season, and their
leadership enabled us to capture the conference championship. Mike is one of our
most experienced distance runners, and he is a natural choice for team captain. I
have every confidence that these three student athletes will guide us to similar
success during the outdoor season."
Southern Maine will commence its 2004 outdoor season on Saturday, when it
travels to Springfield College to face Tufts, Bates, Eastern Connecticut and the
host school. The championship portion of the season begins in mid-April with the
State Meet and continues the following weekend with the Little East Conference
Championship. After capturing the past two indoor conference titles, Coach
Bickford has the Huskies eyeing the outdoor crown.
"The outdoor conference championship has traditionally been a difficult
challenge for us," commented Bickford. "There is a greater number of throwing
events outdoors, and this is one area that we do not have significant depth.
Instead, we will rely on our numbers and versatility in other areas to score
additional points."
     Roux, a naturally-talented all-around athlete, epitomizes the team's
versatility. After spending the 2003 outdoor season gaining familiarity with the
10 disciplines of the decathlon, he enhanced his skills by competing in six events
during the indoor season. Among his better performances was a personal best of 11-
6 in the pole vault to place fifth at the indoor LEC Championships.
"Chris is the consummate team player," praised Bickford. "He is constantly
volunteering to compete in additional events to help us score more points. His
primary concern is the success of the team, and this approach has gained him the
respect and admiration of his teammates."
Although his area of competition is confined to the pole vault, Marsh has
also earned his teammates' respect through his dedication and commitment. He
capped an impressive indoor season by clearing 13-00.25 in the pole vault to
establish a personal best at the New England Division III Championships.
"Peter is a tremendously focused and dedicated competitor," said Bickford.
"He works hard in practice everyday, and has developed into a highly consistent
performer who has demonstrated considerable progress every year."
After emerging as the team's number-two runner during the cross country
season, Bunker continued to shine throughout the winter months, and is expected to
see considerable action in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events outdoors. During the
indoor campaign, he established a personal best of 15:25 for 5,000 meters and
placed second in the 3,000 meters (8:59) at the conference championships.
"During his three years at Southern Maine, Mike has developed a reputation as
a big-meet performer," praised Bickford. "His fastest times and most impressive
efforts usually occur against the tougher competition at the bigger meets. His
ability to rise to the challenge will serve as great example for the rest of the
team."
Following the team's season opener on Saturday, the Huskies' schedule during
the month of April is as follows: April 10, at Bates Invitational; April 17, at
State Championships (Bates); April 24, at Little East Championships (Rhode Island
College); April 30-May 1, at Division III New England Championships (Williams
College).
During the month of May, the team will make the following competitive
appearances: May 7-8, at New England Championships (Northeastern University); May
13-14, at Division III ECAC Championships (Williams College); May 27-29, at
Division III NCAA Championships (Millikin University).
