Scott Hutchinson Named Men’s Track and Field
and Cross Country Coach at USM
GORHAM, Maine -- Scott Hutchinson, the women’s cross country and track
coach at Salve Regina University for the past two years, has accepted the head
coaching position of the men’s cross country and track and field program at the
University of Southern Maine. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the
announcement following an extensive search process.
Hutchinson will assume his duties at USM starting August 15. He succeeds
Bruce Bickford, who left USM in March to pursue other professional
opportunities.
“Scott is recognized as an outstanding coach, role model and a person of
great character,” commented Bean. “He has a reputation for being a tireless
worker, and he cares deeply about the student-athletes involved in his program.
I’m confident that he will continue developing the USM men’s cross country and
track programs to be among the most competitive in the region.”
Prior to his two years at Salve Regina, Hutchinson was the men’s and
women’s cross country and track and field coach at Babson College for 15 years
(1988-2003). While at Babson, he also served as the operations manager for the
college’s recreation center and had an eight-year tenure as the athletic
department’s equipment manager.
A 1986 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a
bachelor’s degree in recreation management, Hutchinson began his coaching career
at his alma mater, guiding the men's and women’s cross country teams during the
1986 season. As an undergraduate at UMPI, he was a three-time captain and
three-time MVP of the Owls cross country team. He was an NAIA All-New England
runner in 1985 after finishing eighth at the regional championship meet and
qualified for the NAIA national championship. He was elected to the UMPI Hall
of Fame in 2002.
At Babson, Hutchinson coached the men's and women’s cross country teams for
15 seasons (1988-2002). He organized and established the outdoor track program
as a varsity program at Babson in 2001 after a ten-year term as a club team. He
coached 13 men to all-conference honors (11 in cross country and 2 in track),
including two-time NEWMAC 10,000-meter champion Brian Gagne. Babson also served
as the host institution for the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships.
The meet was held on a course designed and developed by Hutchinson.
In two seasons at Salve Regina, Hutchinson led the women’s cross country
team to a third place finish in 2003 and a second place result in 2004 at the
Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship, and was named CCC women’s cross
country Coach of the Year following the 2004 season. His team was 19th at the
2003 NCAA Regional Championship and 22nd last fall.
Hutchinson is a member of the United States Track Coaches Association.
The Huskies open their 2005 cross country season on September 10 when they
travel to Amherst, Mass., to participate in the Amherst College Invitational.

NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Bunker Earns All-American Honors in the Men’s Steeplechase
Brewer Finishes 12th in the Women’s Heptathlon
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Mike Bunker
(Bucksport, Maine) became the third All-American in the history of the school’s
men’s track and field program Friday afternoon when he finished sixth in the
3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships being held at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Bunker joins Wil Snyder, who earned indoor All-American honors in the pole
vault in 2004, and Trey Gadbois, who was an outdoor All-American in the 110-
meter hurdles last year, as the third All-American in the history of the USM
men’s track and field program.
Seeded fifth going into Friday afternoon’s final, Bunker covered the
grueling event in a time of 9:16.61 to edge out junior Craig Dye of Nebraska
Wesleyan for sixth place.
Junior Zach Barr of Monmouth College (Illinois) won the men’s steeplechase
in a time of 9:03.19. Senior Aaron Hollingshead of Willamette University was
second in a time of 9:07.34, followed by junior Mike Herlihy of the University
of Wisconsin-La Crosse in third place with a time of 9:11.34.
Also on Friday, senior Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt./Mount Abraham Union)
completed competition in the women’s heptathlon with a 12th place finish among
the 19 competitors by compiling 4,379 points.
Brewer, who began the second day of competition in 10th place overall,
picked up 598 points with a leap of 16-10 3/4 in the long jump. She added
another 490 points with a throw of 100-8 (30.69 meters) in the javelin, and
concluded the competition running the 800 meters in 2:32.61 to earn 661 points.
Her two-day total of 4,379 points was the second best heptathlon of her career,
exceeded only by her school record total of 4,439 points set in April at the
Penn Relays.
Senior Joyia Chadwick of Williams College won the women’s heptathlon with
4,931 points. Junior Jillian Crandall of the University of Wisconsin-River
Falls, who led the event after the first day’s competition, was second with
4,894 points. Junior Christine Hendricks of Calvin College was third with 4,818
points.
USM senior Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook HS) will compete
in the women’s javelin Saturday morning (11:00 a.m. CDT).

Bunker Wins Steeplechase, Sets School Record at ECAC Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior distance runner Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine) of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team set a
school record on the way to winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase event Thursday
evening (May 19) at the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division
III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The championships are being held
Thursday and Friday (May 19-20) at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
Bunker, who set the previous school record (9:19.64) in the steeplechase 12
days ago on the same track, scorched the field with his winning time of 9:09.39.
He finished more than five seconds ahead of Shawn Calabrese of Ithaca College who
came home in 9:14.90. Ryan Gough of Keene State College was third with a time of
9:17.25.
Bunker's performance vaulted him up the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers.
According to performance lists maintained by Apple Raceberry JaM
(http://www.raceberryjam.com), as of Friday morning, Bunker was ranked fifth in
the steeplechase among all qualifiers (automatic and provisional) for the NCAA
Division III National Championships that will be held May 26-28 at Wartburg
College in Waverly, Iowa. The complete field for the NCAA championships will be
announced Monday (May 23).
Sophomore sprinter Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) also competed at the ECAC
Championships. He posted a time of 11.37 seconds during the trials of the 100-
meter dash and did not advance to Friday's finals.

Bunker Sets School Record in Steeplechase
Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team set a school record
Saturday while competing at the New England Division III Championships held at
Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., to provisionally qualify for the 2005
NCAA Division III National Championships later this month.
Bunker, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, smashed the previous
record by nearly 17 seconds with his time of 9:19.64 to place third among the 25
competitors in the event. The first five finishers all surpassed the NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 9:23.00. The previous USM record of 9:36.54 was
set in May 2003 by Darryl Whitney.
Freshman Curtis Wheeler (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) continued his
stellar rookie year with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meters with his time
of 15:23.80. Twin brother Nick was 18th in the steeplechase with his time of
10:13.53.
Also scoring a point for the Huskies was junior Peter Marsh (Lebanon,
Conn./Lyman Memorial) in the pole vault with an eighth place finish by clearing
3.73 meters (12-2 3/4).
The Huskies finished tied for 17th place among the 26 scoring teams with 12
points. Williams College won its 13th team title in the last 15 years with 167.5
points. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was second with 99.5 points,
followed by Bates College with 72.5 points, Springfield with 54 points and Tufts
University with 52 points.
Southern Maine will compete next weekend at the New England Championships
(all divisions) being held at the University of New Hampshire.

Huskies Fourth at Alliance Championships
Bunker Sets School Record in 5,000 Meters
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine) set a school
record in winning the 5,000 meters to help the University of Southern Maine
Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team to a solid fourth place finish Sunday
(May 1) at the annual New England Alliance Outdoor Track and Field
Championships.
The meet, held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, was pushed
back one day because of the bad weather on Saturday (April 30).
Westfield State successfully defended it Alliance title, scoring 157.5
points to edge out Eastern Connecticut State University which finished with 131
points. UMass Dartmouth was third with 97 points, followed by USM with 93.5
points and Rhode Island College with 62.5 points.
The 10-team Alliance Championships includes schools from both the Little
East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC).
In scoring for the five Little East Conference teams, the Huskies had 136
points to place second behind Eastern Connecticut which finished with 177
points. UMass Dartmouth was third with 129 points.
Bunker captured the 5,000 meter title with his record setting time of
15:17.41. That time broke the record of 15:20. 22 set two weeks ago by freshman
Curtis Wheeler (Newport, Vt.).
Freshman Aaron Whitten (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) was the only other
Alliance winner for the Huskies. He took the top spot in the triple jump with a
leap of 12.99 meters (42.7 1/2).
Freshman Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine), the indoor pole vault champion,
took second outdoors by clearing 4.10 meters (13-5 1/2). Haggerty was first
among LEC competitors.
Also taking second place finishes were sophomore sprinter Derek Murchie
(Windham, Maine) who was second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.16 seconds.
Murchie also took a third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.00 seconds.
Freshman Nick Wheeler (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) placed second in the
3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:57.16.
Senior Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) brought home a fourth
place finish in the 1500 meters with his time of 4:04.42. Freshman Josh
Woodbury (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) tied for fourth in the high jump by clearing
1.86 meters (6-1 1/2). Junior Peter Marsh (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial)
placed fourth in the pole vault clearing 3.80 meters (12-5 1/2).
The Huskies will travel to Springfield, Mass., this weekend to participate
in the New England Division III Outdoor Championships being held at Springfield
College.

Little East Conference, New England Alliance Championships Postponed to Sunday
GORHAM, Maine -- The 2005 Little East Conference and New England Alliance
Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for Saturday,
April 30, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, have been postponed.
The meet has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 1, at UMass Dartmouth. First
events get underway at 11:00 a.m.

Huskies Fourth at State Championship
Woodbury Wins High Jump
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Josh Woodbury (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) won the
high jump to highlight the efforts for the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men's outdoor track and field team at the 2005 State of Maine Outdoor Track and
Field Championships held Saturday at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
Woodbury won the high jump by clearing 1.87 meters (6-1 1/2) to be the only
event winner for the Huskies. He also took second place in the long jump with a
leap of 5.97 meters (19-7).
Other highlights include freshman Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) taking second
place in the pole vault by clearing 4.26 meters (14-0) and senior Mike Bunker
(Bucksport, Maine) with a second place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with
his time of 9:38.24.
Freshman Aaron Whitten (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) placed in the long and
triple jumps, taking third in the long jump with a leap of 5.84 meters (19-2 3/4)
and fourth in the triple jump with an effort of 12.37 meters (40-7). Classmate
Curtis Wheeler (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) was fourth in the 800 meters
with a time of 2:02.94 and fifth in the 1500 meters with his time of 4:08.24.
Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, took a fourth in the steeplechase with his time of
10:00.24.
Junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) brought home a third place finish in
the 200-meter dash with a time 22.88 and a fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time
of 11.42.
Bates captured the team title with 262 points, followed by Bowdoin College
with 175 points, Colby College with 92 points and Southern Maine with 73 points.
The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next Saturday to take part in
the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being hosted at
the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. First events get underway at 11:00
a.m.

Curtis Wheeler Named Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine. -- Freshman Curtis Wheeler (Newport, Vermont/North Country
Union) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field
team was named the Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the week
of April 11-17.
Wheeler, a distance specialist for the Huskies, earned the accolade after
setting a new school record in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:20.22 to take
second place in the event at the Bates College Invitational on Saturday (April
16). Wheeler's time in the 5,000-meter run took more than nine seconds off of the
previous mark of 15:29.9 set by Paul Johnson in the spring of 1999.
Wheeler and the Huskies return to action, Saturday, April 23, at the State of
Maine Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Bates College in Lewiston,
Maine. Events are slated to begin at noon.

Southern Maine Fourth at Bates Invitational
Freshman Curtis Wheeler Sets School Record in 5K
LEWISTON, Maine. - Freshman Curtis Wheeler (Newport, Vermont/North Country
Union) established a new University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track record
in the 5000-meter run, Saturday in the first day of the Bates College Invitational
in Lewiston, Maine.
Wheeler placed second for the Huskies in the 5000-meter run with a time of
15:20.22. He broke the previous mark of 15:29.9 set in April 1999 by Paul
Johnson.
Southern Maine freshman Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) placed second in
the Pole Vault with a vault of 13-6, while junior Peter Marsh (Lebanon, Conn./
Lyman Memorial) finished fifth in the event clearing 13-0.
The Huskies also received a second place finish from Aaron Whitton
(Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) in the triple jump. Whitton's leap of 12.86 meters
(42-2 1/4) was second only to MIT's Makinde Adeagbo's first place jump of 13.16
meters (43-2 1/4).
Southern Maine is currenlty in fourth place out of four competiting schools
with 59.5 team points. With five remaining events to be completed tomorrow in the
decathalon, USM trails behind leader Massachusetts Institute of Technology (283.5
points), second place Bates (206 points) and third place Colby (121 points).
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday, April 23, at the Maine State
Outdoor Championships hosted by Bates College. Events are schedule to begin at
12:00 p.m.

Southern Maine Places Third at Springfield Tri-Meet
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior co-captain Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth,
Maine/Greely), senior distance runner Michael Bunker (Bucksport, Maine/Bucksport)
and freshman pole vaulter Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) each had first
place finishes to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third place
result at the Springfield Tri-Meet.
The Huskies scored 70 points to place third behind the Bates College Bobcats
(194 points) and the Springfield College Pride (160 points).
Conrad, a distance specialist, took top honors in the 10,000-meter run
outdistancing his nearest competitor, Pat Hepper of Springfield, by 14 seconds
with a time of 33:26.20. Hepper placed second with a time of 33:40.28.
Bunker aided the Huskies to a 1-2 finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase
taking first place in a time of 9:47.73. Freshman Nick Wheeler (Newport,
Vermont/North Country Union) finished second in a time of 10:05.79.
In the pole vault, Haggerty topped his nearest competition by four inches
with a vault of 13-10 to earn first place. Junior Peter Marsh (Lebanon,
Conn./Lyman Memorial) and sophomore Devin Platts (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) placed
fourth and fifth respectively for the Huskies. Marsh posted a vault of 12-06.00
while Platts' vault of 11-06.00 was good for fifth.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday, April 16 at the Bates College
Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.

Season-Opening Men's Outdoor Track Event Cancelled
GORHAM, Maine -- Today's season-opening Snowflake Invitational outdoor
track and field at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., has been cancelled due to
the inclement weather covering the region.
