Adam Haggerty Earns All-ECAC Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) was the lone member of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team to earn All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honors at the annual two-day outdoor track and field championships conducted Thursday and Friday at Springfield College. Competing in the pole vault, Haggerty cleared 4.36 meters (14-3 1/2) to finish sixth in the event. He was responsible for the three points earned by Southern Maine. Competitors finishing in the top eight positions earn All-ECAC honors. Among the other individual USM competitors were sophomores Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union), freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine), junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) and senior Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely). Sawyer finished 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 49.71 seconds. Nick Wheeler was 17th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 10:00.30 and Curtis Wheeler was 10th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:34.42. Conrad also competed in the 5,000 meters coming home in 24th place with a time of 16:07.76. Murchie ran in the 100-meter dash trials with a time of 11.52 seconds, but did not advance to the finals. Williams College took the team title earning 81 points. Lincoln University was second with 63 points, followed by SUNY Cortland with 62 points, New Jersey City College with 51 points and New York University with 38 points. Southern Maine, with three points, tied for 45th place among the 54 teams that scored in the meet. The ECAC meet concludes the Huskies’ 2006 outdoor season.

Three Huskies Earn All-New England Honors at New England Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine), sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and senior Jeff Lamirande (Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team earned All-New England honors at the NEIcAAA New England Championships held Thursday through Saturday at the Steinbrenner Track on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. The Huskies, with 9.50 points, placed 25th out of 36 competing school. The meet included teams from the NCAA Division I, II and III levels. The University of Rhode Island won the championship with 124.50 points. Sawyer finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 49.80 seconds. Competing in the two-day (Thursday and Friday) decathlon, Lamirande placed fifth with 4,855 points. Haggerty placed fifth in the pole vault clearing 4.40 meters (14-5 1/4). The top eight finishers in the events receive All-New England honors. Sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) turned in a solid performance for Southern Maine in the 10,000-meter run. Wheeler just missed placing a top eight finish, placing 10th with a time of 32:00.10. The Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay team of senior Nick Macklin (South Portland, Maine), junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), sophomore Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and Sawyer finished strong, placing 12th with a time of 3:25.60, less than a second off the school record. Southern Maine closes out its 2006 regular season Thursday and Friday (May 18-19) at the ECAC Division III Championships hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Events start at 11:00 a.m. on each day.

Sawyer, Lamirande Earn All-New England Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and senior Jeff Lamirande (Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team earned All-New England honors Friday at the NEIcAAA New England Championships being held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. Competition concludes Saturday. Sawyer finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 49.80 seconds. Lamirande finished fifth in the two-day decathlon with 4,855 points. The top eight finishers in events receive All-New England honors. The Huskies, with six points, are tied for 23rd place heading into the final day of competition.

Southern Maine Finishes Ninth at New England DIII Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team finished tied for ninth place among 26 scoring teams at the 2006 Division III New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Blake Track on the campus of Springfield College. Southern Maine scored 37 points to tie for ninth place with Bowdoin College. Williams College won the event scoring 153 points, while Tufts University placed second with 64.50 points and M.I.T. finished third with 64 points. The Huskies’ ninth place finish is an eight place improvement over last season’s 17th place finish in the same event. Sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and junior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) each established a new school record in their events. Wheeler placed fourth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15.11.80 to set a new record in the event. Wheeler broke the previous record of 15:17.41 set by Michael Bunker in May 2005 by nearly six seconds. Hopkins smashed his own record in the 1500 meters, placing third with a time of 3:56.24. Hopkins had previously established the USM record in the event in April 2004 with a time of 3:59.51. Sophomore Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) excelled in the 3000-meter steeplechase, earning a second place finish with a time of 9:30.01. Wheeler finished just over a second off of the pace of winner Brian Murtagh of Connecticut College who finished in a time of 9:28.71. Also earning a second place finish for the Huskies was sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) who was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 4.50 meters (14-9). Freshman sprinter Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and senior Jeff Lamirande (Biddeford, Maine) rounded out the top eight finishers for the Huskies. Sawyer placed third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.12 seconds. Lamirande earned an eighth place finish in the decathlon with 4952 points. The Huskies also picked up three points on the strength of the 4 x 100- meter relay team’s sixth place finish in a time of 43.84 seconds. Haggerty, Hopkins, Lamirande, Sawyer and the Wheelers each earned individual Division III All-New England honors for their performance at the meet. Southern Maine returns to action next Friday and Saturday (May 12-13) at the New England Championships (all divisions) on the campus of M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass.

Southern Maine Finishes Third New England Alliance Championship
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vermont/North Country Union) won the 5000-meter run, and twin brother Nick claimed first place in the 3000-meter steeplechase, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third place finish at the 2006 New England Alliance Championships held Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Southern Maine placed third with 84.5 points, finishing behind Westfield State (193 points) and Eastern Connecticut State (155.5 points). Host UMass Dartmouth (70 points) placed fourth and was followed by Rhode Island College (69 points) in fifth, Keene State (52 points) in sixth, Worcester State (47 points) in seventh and Bridgewater State (43 points). Salem State (37 points) and Fitchburg State (25 points) rounded out the team scoring placing ninth and tenth respectively. USM was second in the Little East Conference scoring. Curtis Wheeler placed first in the grueling 5000-meter run with a time 15:20.00. Wheeler placed fifth in the same event a year ago as a freshman with a time of 15:39.79. Wheeler's time of 15:20.00 was less than three seconds off of the USM school record time of 15:17.41 set by Michael Bunker in 2005. Nick Wheeler won the 3000-meter steeplechase, easily outdistancing the second place finisher, Keene State senior Mathew Haley, with a time of 9:43.27. Haley placed second in the event with a time of 9:54.02. Wheeler improved his time by three seconds from last season as he placed second in the event with a time of 9:57.16 in 2005. Freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) turned in a strong performance for the Huskies, placing second in the 400-meter dash and ninth in the 200-meter dash. Sawyer ran the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.21 seconds and the 200- meter dash in a time of 23.04 seconds. Also placing for the Huskies was junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine/Windham). Murchie placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11:38 seconds and eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.93 seconds. In field events, junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) placed third in the pole vault for the Huskies, while senior Peter Marsh (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) placed fifth. Haggerty cleared 13-0 while Marsh cleared 11-6. Southern Maine senior Andrew Sloat (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) earned a fourth place finish in the discus throw with a toss of 38.82 meters (127-4). Southern Maine returns to action Friday and Saturday (May 5-6) at the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Wheeler and Bellemore Earn Little East Conference Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vermont/North Country Union) of the men's outdoor track and field team and junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) of the women's team have earned Little East Conference (LEC) Athlete of the Week honors for the week of April 17-23. Wheeler was named the men's Track Athlete of the Week after setting a school record while winning the 10,000 meters at the State of Maine Championships. Bellemore was named the women's Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week after winning three events at the Aloha Relays held at Bowdoin College. Wheeler won the 10,000 meters with his record setting time of 31:49.10, smashing the previous school record set by Derek Veilleux in April 1999 by more than 20 seconds. The Huskies finished in fourth place with a team score of 93.5 points. Bellemore placed first in the pole vault with a new school and meet record height of 11-1 and first in the long jump with a leap of 16-8 1/2 (5.09 meters). She also won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.95 seconds. Bellemore's outstanding performance helped the Huskies to a first place finish with a team score of 178 points. Bellemore will be among four USM women's competitors competing in the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn., on Thursday (April 27). The men's and women's teams will compete in the 2006 Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships on Saturday (April 29) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Huskies Finish Fourth at State Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men’s outdoor track and field team set two school records and won two events en route to a fourth place finish at the 2006 State of Maine Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Saturday at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Bates College edged Bowdoin College for the team title by just 4.5 points, 204-199.50. Colby edged out Southern Maine for the third spot, 99-93.50. Sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) set a school record in the 10,000-meter run on the way to winning the event. He cover the distance in a time of 31:49.10 to break the previous mark of 32:09.36, set by Derek Veilleux in April 1999, by more than 20 seconds. Wheeler’s twin brother, Nick, finished second in the event, also eclipsing Veilleux’s former record, with a time of 32:01.15. The other school record was set in the 800 meters where junior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) took third place with his time of 1:57.76. Hopkins’ time broke the old school record of 1:58.40 established by Darryl Whitney in April 2002. The Huskies other champion was sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) who won the pole vault by clearing 14-3. Other second place finishes for the Huskies included freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) in the 400 meters with his time of 49.42 seconds, freshman Adam Avery (Old Town, Maine) in the 110-meter hurdles (time not available), and the 4 x 100-meter relay of sophomore Andrew Whitcomb (Gorham, Maine), Sawyer, freshman Trevor Sullivan-Smith (South Portland, Maine) and junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) with their time of 44.13 seconds. Third place finishes were turned in by Murchie in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds, and sophomore Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:04.49. The Huskies will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (April 29) to take part in the annual Little East Conference and New England Alliance championships. Events get underway at 11:00 a.m.

Huskies Third at Bates Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) broke the school record in the 400-meter run and helped the 4 x 400-meter relay establish another record to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team finish third Saturday at the Bates College Invitational in Lewiston, Maine. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the meet compiling 244 points. Bates was second with 208 points, followed by Southern Maine with 104 points and Colby College with 89 points. Sawyer, who finished second in the 400-meter race, broke the old school record of 49.57 seconds set by Charlie Tarbox in April 2000 when he crossed the line in 48.98 seconds. In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Sawyer anchored the foursome that included junior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), freshman Greg Cannon (Sanford, Maine) and sophomore Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) to a time of 3:28.05, taking more than three seconds off the old mark of 3:31.68 set in May 2000. The quartet finished third in the event. The Huskies had no individual winners during the meet. Along with Sawyer, others picking up second place finishes included sophomores Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:004.92 and Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) in the pole vault by clearing 13-6, and senior Jeff Lamirande (Biddeford, Maine) in the high jump with a jump 5-10. Murchie came in third in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.32 and fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.00 seconds. The Huskies will travel to Colby College next Saturday (April 22) for the annual State of Maine Championships. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.

Hopkins, Ahearn Receive Little East Conference Recognition
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and senior Abbey Ahearn (Paxton, Mass./St. Peter Marian) of the University of Southern Maine men's and women's outdoor track and field teams, respectively, have been recognized by the Little East Conference for their outstanding performances at the Bryant University Invitational held this past Saturday in Smithfield, R.I. Hopkins was picked as the LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Ahearn was selected as the LEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week. Competing in terrible weather conditions, Hopkins, running in the 800 meters, won that event with a time of 1:59.99. He was the only competitor to break two minutes and was nearly two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. In the men's team's season-opening event, the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., Hopkins won the 1500 meters with a time of 3:59.3. Ahearn won the hammer throw with a best effort of 45.90 meters (150-7) and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 34.33 meters (112-7). In three spring meets to date, Ahearn has thrown the hammer over 45 meters (147-10) every time. She set the school record in the season-opening meet at Clermont, Florida with a throw of 45.10 meters (147-11), then broke that mark three days later at the University of Florida Invitational with a throw of 46.83 meters (153-8). Ahearn is provisionally qualified in the hammer throw for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Benedictine University in May. The men's team heads north to Bates College in Lewiston this Saturday (April 15) for the Bates Invitational. The women's team will travel to Connecticut to compete in the Elmer Swanson Invitational at Wesleyan University. Weather Dampens Competitors at Bryant Invitational
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Weather was the big winner Saturday at the Bryant University Invitational outdoor track and field meet. Due to the terrible weather (rain, snow, sleet, hail) in southern New England, many competitors were scratched from events, and the pole vault was cancelled. Despite the conditions, the University of Southern Maine Huskies received some very strong performances. Sophomore Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) paced the Huskies to a one-two finish in the 10,000 meters, winning the event with a time of 32:31.64. Senior Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) was second with a his time of 32:34.70. Freshman Steve McCarthy (Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area) was fourth with a time of 34:33.01. Wheeler's twin brother, Curtis, finished second in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:35.45. Junior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) had an outstanding run in the 800 meters, winning the event with a time of 1:59.99. Freshman Adam Avery (Old Town, Maine) took a second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.16 seconds. The Huskies will compete next Saturday at the Bates College Invitational in Lewiston, Maine. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.

Southern Maine Names Bunker, Conrad, Murchie and Sachs Captains for 2006 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine/Bucksport) and Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and juniors Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine/Windham) and Colin Sachs (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) have been named captains of the 2006 University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team. Bunker, Murchie and Sachs served as captains of the indoor track and field team this past winter while Conrad was one of the captains of the men's cross country team. Bunker became just the third All-American in USM men's track and field history during the 2005 outdoor track and field season, placing sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Bunker earned the prestigious honor completing the event in a time of 9:16.61. He also this winter in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing 12th. Bunker earned numerous honors during the 2005 outdoor season, including All-ECAC and Division III All-New England recognition in the steeplechase as well as All-Little East Conference and All-New England Alliance accolades in the 5000-meter run. At the 2005 ECAC Division III Championships, Bunker placed first in the steeplechase en route to establishing a USM school record time in the event with a time of 9:09.39. Bunker also set the school record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:17.41 to place first at the Little East Conference championships. Murchie, a 2005 All-Little East Conference and All-New England Alliance performer, returns to compete in the sprinting events. Murchie earned All-LEC and All-Alliance honors last season in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Murchie placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.25 and finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.00. Murchie qualified and competed in the 2005 New England Division III Championships, New England (NEIcAAA) Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships. Sachs competes in the throwing events for the Huskies. Over the past several seasons Sachs has been one of Southern Maine's most consistent performers in the throwing events. During the 2005 outdoor track and field season, Sachs placed fourth in the shot put at the Little East Conference championships with a throw of 11.34 meters. He threw a season-best 11.77 meters at the Bates College Invitational to place eighth overall. A middle-distance specialist, Conrad, earned All-Little East Conference recognition in the 1500-meter run and All-New England Alliance honors in the 800-meter and 1500-meter run. Conrad collected All-New England Alliance recognition in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.21 to place eighth overall. In the grueling 1500-meter distance, Conrad placed second with a time of 4:04.42. He also qualified to compete in the New England Division III Championships in the 1500. At the championship, Conrad ran a 4:06.21 to place 18th in a quality field. The Huskies opened their 2006 season last weekend (April 1), traveling as a split squad to the Tufts Invitational and Furman College Invitational. They return to action this Saturday (April 8, 11:00 a.m.) at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, Rhode Island. They return to the state of Maine to compete in the Bates College Invitational (April 15, 11:00 a.m.) and at the State of Maine Championships (April 22, 1:00 p.m.) being held at Colby College. Southern Maine concludes the month of April competing at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships (April 29, 11:00 a.m.) hosted by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. In the month of May, Southern Maine will send competitors to three events, including the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. (May 4-6), the New England Championships at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass. Southern Maine Competes at Tufts Invitational and Furman Invitational
GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team opened its season traveling to the Tufts College Invitational in Medford, Mass., and the Furman Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina. The Huskies, in split squad competition, fared well in their season-opening competitions. At the Furman Invitational, the Huskies recorded five first place finishes. Freshman Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.46, while classmate Adam Avery (Old Town, Maine/Old Town) took first place in the high jump with a jump of 5-10. Juniors Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and Colin Sachs (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) also won their respective events. Hopkins won the 1500-meter run with a hand-held time of 3:59.3. Sachs took the hammer throw with a winning throw of 109-8 1/2. Senior Adam Sloat (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) won the discus with a throw of 132-0 1/2. Sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) paced Southern Maine at the Tufts Invitational placing third in the pole vault. Haggerty cleared 13-6 to claim the third spot to lead USM to a 14th place finish at the event. Dartmouth College won the 17-team event with a score of 116 points. Junior Chris Jackson (West Bath, Maine/Morse) placed sixth and 16th in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, respectively. Jackson finished the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.70 and the 200 in a time of 24.00 seconds. Sophomore Aaron Whitten (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) had two top 10 finishes for the Huskies in jumping events, placing sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-10 3/4 (12.77 meters) and 10th in the long jump with a jump of 20-3 3/4 (6.19 meters). Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (April 8) at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Scott Hutchinson Named Men's Track and Field and Cross Country Coach at USM
GORHAM, Maine -- Scott Hutchinson, the women's cross country and track coach at Salve Regina University for the past two years, has accepted the head coaching position of the men's cross country and track and field program at the University of Southern Maine. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the announcement following an extensive search process. Hutchinson will assume his duties at USM starting August 15. He succeeds Bruce Bickford, who left USM in March to pursue other professional opportunities. "Scott is recognized as an outstanding coach, role model and a person of great character," commented Bean. "He has a reputation for being a tireless worker, and he cares deeply about the student-athletes involved in his program. I'm confident that he will continue developing the USM men's cross country and track programs to be among the most competitive in the region." Prior to his two years at Salve Regina, Hutchinson was the men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Babson College for 15 years (1988-2003). While at Babson, he also served as the operations manager for the college's recreation center and had an eight-year tenure as the athletic department's equipment manager. A 1986 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a bachelor's degree in recreation management, Hutchinson began his coaching career at his alma mater, guiding the men's and women's cross country teams during the 1986 season. As an undergraduate at UMPI, he was a three-time captain and three-time MVP of the Owls cross country team. He was an NAIA All-New England runner in 1985 after finishing eighth at the regional championship meet and qualified for the NAIA national championship. He was elected to the UMPI Hall of Fame in 2002. At Babson, Hutchinson coached the men's and women's cross country teams for 15 seasons (1988-2002). He organized and established the outdoor track program as a varsity program at Babson in 2001 after a ten-year term as a club team. He coached 13 men to all-conference honors (11 in cross country and 2 in track), including two-time NEWMAC 10,000-meter champion Brian Gagne. Babson also served as the host institution for the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships. The meet was held on a course designed and developed by Hutchinson. In two seasons at Salve Regina, Hutchinson led the women's cross country team to a third place finish in 2003 and a second place result in 2004 at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship, and was named CCC women's cross country Coach of the Year following the 2004 season. His team was 19th at the 2003 NCAA Regional Championship and 22nd last fall. Hutchinson is a member of the United States Track Coaches Association. The Huskies open their 2005 cross country season on September 10 when they travel to Amherst, Mass., to participate in the Amherst College Invitational. ################################################################################
