Southern Maine Places Sixth at ECAC Championships Curtis Wheeler, James Spaulding Set School Records
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Junior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) smashed the school record in the 5000-meter run Friday en route to a first place finish and helping the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team to a sixth place finish at the 2007 ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III Championships hosted by Oneonta State College in Oneonta, N.Y. Sparked by several outstanding performances, Southern Maine scored 33.50 points to place sixth among the 44 institutions that scored in the meet. Cortland State placed first with 94 points, while Springfield College finished second with 84 points. Oneonta State was third with 44 points followed by Plattsburgh State and Lebanon Valley in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 35 and 34 points. In the 5,000 meters, Wheeler earned All-ECAC honors turning in a time of 14 minutes, 54.72 seconds to win the event and easily surpass his previous school record time of 15:10.38. Wheeler set the former mark last weekend at the NEIcAAA Championships held at Dartmouth College. Sophomore James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) earned a second place finish in the grueling, 10-event decathlon to earn All-ECAC honors. Spaulding totaled 5,840 points, including a trio of third and second place finishes. Spaulding placed third in the 100-meter dash (12.01 seconds), discus throw (32.98 meters) and javelin (43.76 meters) and turned in second place finishes in the 400-meter dash (53.06 seconds), shot put (12.31 meters) and long jump (6.17 meters). In the 1500 meter run, the final event of the decathlon, Spaulding placed first with a time of 4:42.97. Juniors Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) each had top five finishes for the Huskies en route to All-ECAC recognition. Haggerty tied for third place in the pole vault clearing 4.40 meters (14-5 1/4), while Wheeler finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run turning in a time of 31:58.98. Sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and freshman David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine) also earned All-ECAC honors. Sawyer placed sixth in the 400- meter dash with a time of 49.56 seconds, while Quigley took seventh place in the triple jump with a leap of 13.46 meters (44-2). The ECAC Championships concludes the Huskies’ 2007 outdoor track and field season.

Sawyer Earns NEIcAAA All-New England Honors
HANOVER, N.H. -- Sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team earned New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) All-New England honors in the 400-meter dash, placing sixth in a time of 49.28 seconds, to highlight the final day of competition at the NEIcAAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Dartmouth College. Sawyer advanced to the finals of the 400-meter dash turning in a time of 49.50 seconds in his qualifying heat on Friday. Sawyer, who was second in his trials heat, was the sixth fastest among the 26 competitors. Sawyer joins junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) as one of two Huskies to earn All-New England honors at the championship. On Friday, Haggerty placed seventh in the pole vault clearing 4.59 meters (15-0 3/4). Haggerty became just the second USM pole vaulter to clear 15 feet in outdoor competition, joining school-record holder Nick Joy (15-3 in May 2000). Junior Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and the Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay team rounded out the Saturday competition for the Huskies. Wheeler placed 25th in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a field of 32 competitors clocking a time of 9:49.61. The 4 x 400 relay team turned in a time of 3:31.06. In other competition on Friday, Wheeler's twin brother, Curtis, set a school record in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:10.38. Southern Maine closes the 2007 outdoor season this Thursday and Friday (May 17-18) at the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. at Oneonta State in Oneonta N.Y.

Curtis Wheeler Sets School Record in 5,000 Meters Haggerty All-New England in Pole Vault, Clears 15 Feet Sawyer Qualifies for 400 Meter Final
HANOVER, N.H. -- Junior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) set a school record in the 5,000 meters to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team’s performance Friday at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Dartmouth College. Wheeler broke his own previous record of 15:11.80, set in May 2006, with his time of 15 minutes, 10.38 seconds and finished 10th among the 29 competitors. Junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) earned All-New England honors in the pole vault, finishing seventh after clearing 4.59 meters (15-0 3/4). Haggerty is just the second USM pole vaulter to clear 15 feet outdoors, joining school record holder Nick Joy (15-3 in May 2000) in that exclusive club. Sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) advanced to the finals in the 400 meters. Haggerty, Sawyer Earn Division III All-New England Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) earned Division III All-New England honors Saturday to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team at the 2007 New England Division III Championships hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Haggerty tied for second place in the pole vault clearing 4.37 meters (14- 4). Haggerty's height matched that of Fitchburg State's Kyle Wilson and Coast Guard's Nathanael Rhodes. Greg Tao of M.I.T. won the event clearing 4.52 meters (14-10). Sawyer turned in a time of 50.12 seconds to earn a third place finish in the 400-meter dash. Sawyer also ran the anchor leg in the Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay team that placed 15th with a hand-held time of 3:30.0. Southern Maine placed 19th among the 25 scoring teams tallying 12.33 points. Williams College placed first with 137.50 points and Tufts University took second place with 91.50 points. Springfield College netted 89 points for a third place finish, while M.I.T. placed fourth and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy took fifth with 79 and 60.33 points, respectively. Southern Maine returns to action at the NEIcAAA New England Championships hosted by Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. The decathlon begins on Thursday (May 10) and the rest of the championships’ events will be held Friday and Saturday (May 11-12).

Southern Maine Finishes Fifth at LEC/Alliance Championship Jimmy Sawyer Wins 400 Meters
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) won the 400- meter dash to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a fifth place finish at the 2007 New England Alliance Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Saturday at Fitchburg (Mass.) State College. The Huskies scored 67.5 points to earn fifth place. Westfield State won the event with 157 points and was followed by Eastern Connecticut State in second place with 136.5 points. UMass Dartmouth scored 124 points to place third, while Worcester State netted. 72.5 points in fourth place. In the Little East Conference scoring, Eastern Connecticut edged UMass- Dartmouth, 194.50 to 150, and Southern Maine took third place with 83.5 points. Keene State College took fourth with 74 points, one more than Rhode Island College in fifth, UMass-Boston rounded out the field in the Little East with 43 points. Sawyer turned in a time of 49.26 seconds to win the 400 meters. He was the only Alliance champion for Southern Maine. Juniors Nick and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) each recorded second place finishes for the Huskies. Nick Wheeler placed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:39.21. Curtis Wheeler ran the 1500 meters in a time of 4.00.21. Curtis Wheeler also grabbed a third place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.93. Junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) placed third in the pole vault clearing 4.34 meters (14-3). Junior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif.) netted a pair of top eight finishes in field events. Gooding placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.48 meters (21-3 1/4) and fourth in the high jump clearing 1.85 meters (6-1). In the triple jump, freshman David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine) had a leap of 13.15 meters (43-1 3/4) to earn a third place finish. Southern Maine's 4 x 400-meter relay team of Sawyer, senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass.), junior Forest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine) and sophomore Nathan Korthy (Portland, Maine) placed fourth in a time of 3:31.81. Southern Maine returns to action on at the New England Division III Championships. Qualifiers for the meet will be in competition starting Thursday (decathlon) and running through Saturday at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

James Spaulding Named LEC Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team has been named the Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the week of April16-22. Spaulding set a school record in the decathlon while competing at the Holy Cross Decathlon. Spaulding placed fifth among the 22 competitors at the event with 5,698 points. He smashed the previous USM record of 5,347 points set by Chris Roux in April 2004 by 351 points. Spaulding's point total is just 302 points shy of an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark, but qualifies him for the New England Division III Championships and ECAC Division III Championships in May. Southern Maine Competes at State of Maine Championships
LEWISTON, Maine - Junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) each had first place finishes to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team's performance at the 2007 State of Maine Championships Saturday afternoon at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Southern Maine placed fourth with 73 points. Bates College won the event scoring 226 points, while Bowdoin College finished second with 205 points. Colby College placed third netting 96 points. Haggerty won the pole vault clearing 4.19 meters (13-9) as Southern Maine finished one-two in the event. Freshman Jeremy Curran (Lamoine, Maine) earned a second place finish with a vault of 4.04 meters (13-3). Sawyer took first place in the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line in 49.68 seconds. Junior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif.) had a pair of third place finishes for the Huskies. Gooding was three quarters of an inch from tying the USM school record in the high jump clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4). He earned his other third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters (20-7 1/4). Juniors Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) placed second and third respectively in the 10,000-meter run. Curtis crossed the finish line in 32:32.67 while Nick clocked a time of 32:49.59. Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (April 28) at Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Mass., for the 2007 Little East Conference Championships. Events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Spaulding Sets USM School Record at Holy Cross Decathlon
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team set a school record in the two-day, ten-event decathlon while competing at the Holy Cross Decathlon Thursday and Friday in Worcester, Mass. Spaulding placed fifth among the 22 competitors at the event with 5,698 points. He smashed the previous USM record for the decathlon by 351 points. Chris Roux set the former mark of 5,347 points on April 28-29, 2004, at Williams College. Spaulding's total is just 302 points shy of an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark, but is good enough to qualify him for the New England Division III Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships next month. Steve Blum of the United States Coast Guard Academy placed first in the event scoring 6,197 points. Spaulding had several top finishes en route to his point total. Spaulding placed second in the shot put with a toss of 12.39 meters (40-7 3/4) and a fourth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.26 meters (20-6 1/2). Spaulding also had fifth place finishes in the 400-meter dash and 1500-meter run. Spaulding crossed the finish line in the 400-meter in 53.58 seconds and the 1500-meter run in 4:42.18. Freshman Jake Berube (Spotsylvania, Pa.) placed 14th in the event, scoring 4,916 points, and qualified for the New England Division III Championships. Berube had a third place finish and a pair fourth place finishes. Berube placed third in the 1500-meter run in 4:41.04 and fourth in both 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash in times of 11.67 and 53.19 seconds, respectively. Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it competes in the Aloha Relays at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Southern Maine Finishes Fourth at MIT Track and Field Meet
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Junior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif.) won the high jump clearing 1.18 meters (5-11 1/4) to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team to a fourth place finish at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass. Southern Maine scored 85 points to place fourth among the five schools competing. M.I.T. won the event with 262 points, followed by Bates College with 191 points. Colby College placed third netting 91 points, while Colby-Sawyer College rounded out the scoring in fifth place with 43 points. Gooding, the only USM competitor to win an event, placed second in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump in a solid outing for the Huskies. Gooding took second in the long jump with a leap of 6.36 meters (20-10 1/2) and placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.91 meters (42-4 1/4). Juniors Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and Nick and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) all earned second place finishes for Southern Maine. Haggerty placed second in the pole vault clearing 4.19 meters (13-9), while Sawyer finished second in the 800-meter run clocking a time of 1:58.17. Competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Nick Wheeler finished less than a second behind the winner, Jeff Alden of Colby College (9:32.76), with a time of 9 minutes, 33.72 seconds. Curtis Wheeler took second place in the 5000-meter run crossing the finish line in a time of 15:23.21. Freshman Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) gave the Huskies a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. McKeon finished the 100-meter dash in 11.58 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.30 seconds. Southern Maine returns for a rare mid-week event on Wednesday and Thursday (April 18-19) at the Holy Cross Decathlon in Worcester, Mass. The full team will compete at the State Championships on Saturday (April 21, 1:00 p.m.) at Bates College.

Curtis Wheeler Named LEC Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team has been named the Little East Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 1, 2007. The announcement was made Tuesday by the LEC. Wheeler, the 2006 Little East Conference outdoor champion at 5,000 meters, placed first in the 10,000-meter run at the highly-competitive Tufts University Snowflake Classic, a non-scoring event which features track and field teams from Division I, II and III institutions. Earning LEC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in his career, Wheeler clocked a school record time of 31 minutes, 30.48 seconds in the event to best his nearest rival, his twin brother Nick, by 4:32 seconds. Both easily surpassed Curtis Wheeler's previous school record time of 31:49.10 set last year. Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday at the Fitchburg State Invitational in Fitchburg, Mass. Curtis Wheeler Sets 10K School Record at Snowflake Classic
MEDFORD, Mass. -- Juniors Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) finished first and second, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team’s performance at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic Saturday afternoon at the Dussault Outdoor Complex. The meet was a non team-scoring event. Curtis Wheeler won the 10,000 in a school record time of 31 minutes, 30.48 seconds, and was followed closely by Nick who crossed the finish line in a time of 31:35.23. Both beat the previous record of 31:49.10 set last spring by Curtis Wheeler. Junior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) tied with two other competitors for second place in the pole vault, clearing 14-2 3/4 (4.34 meters). Northeastern University’s Jordan Thull placed first in the event with a vault of 16-0 3/4 inches (4.90 meters). USM freshman Jeremy Curran (Lamoine, Maine) tied for sixth place in the event clearing 12-3 1/4 (3.74). Freshman David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine) had two top 10 finishes for the Huskies. Quigley placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43-1 3/4 (13.15 meters) and took eighth place in the high jump with a jump of 5-11 1/4 (1.81 meters). Junior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) also had top 10 finishes for USM. Tobie placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.98. Sawyer placed sixth in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 50.62 seconds. Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (April 7) at the Fitchburg (Mass.) Huskies Open Spring Season at NU Spring Open Nick Wheeler Wins Steeplechase
GORHAM, Maine -- Paced the Wheeler brothers, the University of Southern Maine Huskies opened their 2007 spring outdoor track and field season Saturday participating in the non-team scoring Northeastern University Husky Spring Open at the Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass. Junior Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) was Southern Maine's lone winner in the meet taking the top spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9 minutes, 48.00 seconds. Twin brother Curtis came in second in the 5,000 meters crossing the line in 15:34.34. Other strong opening performances were turned in by sophomore Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) who was 14th in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.82 seconds and 18th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.00 seconds, freshman Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) who placed 21st in both the 100 dash and 200 meters with his times of 12.08 and 24.15, respectively, freshman Jeremy Curran (Lamoine, Maine/MDI) who finished sixth in the pole vault by clearing 12-6, and freshman David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine) who was 15th in the javelin with a throw of 149-6. Southern Maine will travel to Tufts University in Medford, Mass., on Saturday (10:00 a.m.) for the annual Snowflake Invitational.
