Wheeler, Haggerty and Shepard Earn Little East Conference Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team have earned Little East Conference weekly accolades for the their outstanding performances at the 2008 New England Division III Championships hosted this past weekend at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) was named the LEC's Track Athlete of the Week, while classmate Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) was named the conference's Co-Field Athlete of the Week. Freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) earned the conference's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week honor. All three played an integral role in the Huskies best-ever finish at the New England Division III Championships. USM scored 32 points to finish eighth among the 26 scoring teams, surpassing a tie for ninth place in 2006. Competing in his first New England Division III Championships, Shepard earned Division III All-New England accolades by placing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.08 seconds. This is the second straight week Shepard has earned the LEC Rookie of the Week honor. Haggerty shared the Field Athlete of the Week honor with Dante Lopardo of Rhode Island College. Haggerty placed fourth in the pole vault, successfully clearing 4.50 meters (14-9), to secure Division III All-New England honors for the second consecutive season. This is the second time during the outdoor season that Haggerty has been named the Field Athlete of the Week. Wheeler won the 5,000-meter run in spectacular fashion with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14 minutes, 39.22 seconds. Earning Division III All-New England honors, Wheeler broke his previous school record of 14.54.65 set two years ago at the Maine State Championships. This is the fourth time this spring that Wheeler has been tabbed as the Track Athletic of the Week. Wheeler is also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 10,000 meters. Southern Maine returns to action May 8-10 at the NEIcAAA New England Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.. Southern Maine Finishes Eighth at New England Division III Championship
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) won the 5,000-meter run with a school record and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14 minutes, 39.22 seconds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team to the best finish in the program's history, eighth place, at the 2008 New England Division III Championships hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Wheeler, who surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:48.00, broke his previous school record mark of 14:54.65 set two weeks ago at the State Championships held at Colby College. Wheeler was one of six USM athletes to earn Division III All-New England honors Saturday as the Huskies scored 32 points to finish eighth among the 26 scoring teams. The eight-place finish is the program's best finish, bettering the tie for ninth place in 2006. Williams College won the team title with 151 points, followed by M.I.T. in second place with 92 points. Coast Guard netted 87 points for third place, while Springfield College placed fourth and Tufts University finished fifth with 58 points and 49 points, respectively. Wheeler led three USM runners to finish among the top eight of the 5,000. Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, placed third with a personal best time of 14:56.05, and senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) placed eighth in a time of 15:16.05 to earn Division III All-New England honors. Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) earned All-New England honors in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Murchie placed sixth in both events, crossing the finish line in the 100 in 11.24 seconds and the 200 in 22.68. Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) placed fourth in the pole vault earning Division III All-New England honors for the second consecutive year, clearing 4.50 meters (14-9). Freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) also earned Division III All-New England honors placing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.08. Southern Maine returns to action May 8-10 at the NEIcAAA New England Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. Murchie and Shepard Earn LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) and freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team have each been honored by the Little East Conference for their performances at the 2008 Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championship meet held this past Saturday (April 26) at Rhode Island College in Providence, R.I. Murchie won two events to highlight six first place finishes as the Huskies captured the 2008 Little East Conference Championship. Murchie claimed the conference titles in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.35 seconds and the 200 in 23.19 to lead Southern Maine to its first LEC outdoor track and field title since 2001. The senior also ran the opening leg on the 4 x 400-meter relay. Shepard earned one of the Huskies' six first place finishes, winning the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.16 seconds. Shepard also raced well in the 400-meter hurdles earning second place with a time of 56.71 seconds. Southern Maine Wins Little East Title for First Time Since 2001
PROVIDENCE -- Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) won two events to highlight six first place finishes as the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team captured the 2008 Little East Conference Championship Saturday at the Black Track Complex at Rhode Island College in Providence. Earning its first Little East Conference title since 2001, Southern Maine scored 194 points to finish first. Keene State College placed second with 125 points, followed by Eastern Connecticut State in third place with 103 points. Rhode Island College placed fourth with 77 points, followed by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in fifth and the University of Massachusetts Boston in sixth with 76 and 38 points respectively. Southern Maine finished second in the New England Alliance Championships with 135 points. Westfield State won the Alliance meet scoring 145 points. Keene State placed third (106.5), Fitchburg State placed fourth (67.50) and Worcester State finished in fifth place (59 points) to round out the top five in the 12-team meet. The Alliance meet includes schools from the Little East and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Murchie claimed LEC titles in the 100 and the 200-meter dashes, winning the 100 in a time of 11.35 seconds and the 200 in 23.19. Freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.16 and earned a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles turning in a time of 56.71 to help the Huskies to a solid performance in the sprinting events. In distance events, senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) led the Huskies to a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 1500 meters, crossing the finish line with an outstanding time of 4:00.90. Senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) placed second behind Wheeler in 4:03.81. Senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) placed third in 4:05.20, followed closely by senior Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) in fourth place in a time of 4:05.72. Curtis Wheeler also earned a third place finish in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain) won the 5,000 meters covering the distance in 15:31.18. The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Murchie, junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) won the event with their time of 3:24.61. Senior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mt. Diablo) and freshman Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) tied the school outdoor record in the high jump clearing 1.88 meters (6-2) to finish in a three-way tie for second place. Gooding also picked up a third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.18 meters (20-3 1/2). Wheeler and Spaulding Earn Little East Conference Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team each earned weekly honors from the Little East Conference that were announced Monday afternoon. Wheeler was named the conference's Track Athlete of the Week, while Spaulding earned the Field Athlete of the Week accolade for the week ending April 20. Both turned in record setting performances for the Huskies last week. Wheeler set a school record in the 5,000-meter run to help Southern Maine to a third place finish at the 2008 Maine State Collegiate Championships hosted by Colby College on Saturday. Wheeler broke his own mark in the event, crossing the finish line in first place with a time of 14 minutes, 54.65 seconds. His previous mark of 14:54.72 was set in May 2007 at the ECAC Division III Championships. Spaulding set two school records earlier in the week (April 16-17) while competing in the two-day, 10-event decathlon at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Spaulding placed second among the 28 competitors in the decathlon scoring 6,251 points. Spaulding's 6,251 points smashed his previous record mark of 5,840 points set in May 2007 by 411 points and easily surpassed the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard of 6,000 points. In the process of establishing a new record in the decathlon, Spaulding also set a school record in the javelin with a throw of 51.02 meters (167-5). He broke the mark of 163-5 set by Mike Nale in April 1998. Huskies Finish Third at Maine State Championship Meet
WATERVILLE, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and the Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay team each established school records Saturday at the 2008 Maine State Collegiate Championships meet at Colby College's Alfond Track in Waterville. Southern Maine scored 121 points to finish third. Bates College won the meet tallying 190 points, followed closely by Bowdoin College with 188 points. Colby College rounded out the scoring with 111 points. Wheeler broke his own record in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in first place with a time of 14 minutes, 54.65 seconds. His previous mark of 14:54.72 was set in May 2007 at the ECAC Championships. USM got a one-two finish in the event as Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, placed second in a time of 15:16.01. In the 4 x 400-meter relay, senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.), freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) combined for a school record time of 3:22.13 and earning a first place finish for the Huskies. The time was more than two seconds faster than the previous record of 3:24.73 set in April 2006. Murchie and Sawyer were a part of the previous record along with Nick Macklin and senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook). Gobbi, Murchie, Mercer and Sawyer each had a solid meet individually. Sawyer finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.04, while Gobbi placed fifth in the same event crossing the finish line in 50.98. Mercer placed fourth in the 800 meters clocking a time of 2:00.52. Murchie turned in a pair of second place performances in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. He finished the 100 in 11.29 seconds, and the 200 with a time of 22.56. Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) continued to perform well in the pole vault winning the event by clearing 4.42 meters (14-6). Junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) earned a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 50.15 meters (164-4). James Spaulding Finishes Second at Holy Cross Decathlon Junior Sets School Record and Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championship
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team set a school record Thursday competing in the final day of the ten-event decathlon at the Holy Cross Decathlon in Worcester, Mass. Spaulding placed second among the 28 competitors at the event with 6,251 points. Spaulding's point total is good enough for an NCAA Division III provisional qualification (6,000 points) and smashes his previous USM record for the decathlon by 411 points. Spaulding's total was 349 points shy of an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. In addition to his decathlon record, Spaulding set a school record in the javelin with a throw of 51.02 meters (167-5), breaking the ten-year old mark of 163-5 set by Mike Nale in April 1998. Springfield College's Mike Miller won the event tallying 6,481 points. Southern Maine freshman Tyler Lenois (Colraine, Maine/Mohawk Trail) placed 24th with 3,922 points. Spaulding established his former school record of 5,840 points with a second place finish at the 2007 ECAC Division III Championships in Oneonta, N.Y., in May 2007. Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the Maine State Championships hosted by Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

Southern Maine Finishes Third at Colby Meet Murchie Sets School Record in 200; Haggerty Ties Pole Vault Mark
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) set a school record in the 200-meter dash Saturday afternoon to highlight a solid performance by the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team at a four-team meet hosted by Colby College on the Alfond Track in Waterville. Murchie won the 200 meters in a school record time of 22.48 seconds, eclipsing the eight-year-old record of 22.57 set by Charlie Tarbox in April 2000. Murchie’s first place finish was one of five by Southern Maine competitors in the meet. Murchie also placed second in the 100-meter dash crossing the finish line in 11.30. Competing in the pole vault, senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) matched the USM record in the event, clearing 4.65 meters (15-3) to win the event. Haggerty matched the mark set by Nick Joy in May 2000. Seniors Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) each earned first place finishes. Hopkins won the 1500 meters in a time of 4:04.98, while Wheeler cruised to the top spot in the 5000 meters with his time of 15:13.01. Sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) helped USM to a one-two finish in the 1500 meters, placing second in a time of 4:06.16. Freshman Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) led a one-two- three finish by the Huskies in the high jump. Fogell won the event clearing 1.81 meters (5-11 1/4) and was followed by senior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mt. Diablo) and freshman Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union). Fogell and Gooding both cleared the same height, but Fogell won on attempts. Southern Maine placed third at the meet scoring 156 points. Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the meet with 224 points, followed by Bates College in second with 171 points. Colby rounded out the team scoring with 106 points. Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday and Thursday (April 1-17) at the Holy Cross Decathlon in Worcester, Mass. Competition begins each day at 12:00 p.m.

Wheeler and Fogell Recognized by Little East Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and freshman Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team each were recognized by the Little East Conference for their performances this past week. Wheeler was recognized as the conference's Track Athlete of the Week, while Fogell was awarded the Field Athlete of the Week accolade. Wheeler smashed the school record for the 10,000-meter run Friday night (April 4) while competing in the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton University. Wheeler, who finished fifth in the event, turned in a time of 30 minutes, 18.26 seconds to take more than a minute off his previous school record time of 31:30.48 set in March 2007 at Tufts University. Wheeler's time provisionally qualified him for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championships to be held the end of May at the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh. He comfortably surpassed the provisional qualifying standard of 31:05.00 and was just 4.26 seconds off of the automatic qualifying mark of 30.14.00. Competing at the 2008 Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet on Saturday (April 5), Fogell helped USM to a third place finish at the meet, collecting one of three first place finishes for the Huskies. Fogell won the high jump event clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4). Curtis Wheeler Sets 10K Mark at Sam Howell Invitational Senior Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team smashed the school record for 10,000 meters Friday night while competing in the Sam Howell Invitational being held at Princeton University. Wheeler, who finished fifth in the event, turned in a time of 30 minutes, 18.26 seconds to take more than a minute off his previous school record time of 31:30.48 set in March 2007 at Tufts University. Wheeler's time also provisionally qualified him for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championships to be held the end of May at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He easily surpassed the provisional qualifying standard of 31:05.00, and was just 4.26 seconds shy of the automatic qualifying standard of 30:14.00. Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, also competed in the 10,000. He missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time by less than two seconds with his 17th place time of 31:06.95. Sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) competed in the 5,000 meters turning in impressive times. Jasud placed 31st among the 52 competitors with a personal best time of 15:07:57, and Hopkins, who is recovering from an injury, was four spots back with his time of 15:13.87. Southern Maine was scheduled to compete at the Bates Invitational on April 12, but the meet has been cancelled. Attempts are being made to find another meet on that date.

Southern Maine Third at Jim Sheehan Invitational
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) each earned a first place finish to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s outdoor track and field team to a third place finish at the 2008 Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet hosted by Fitchburg (Mass.) State College on Saturday. Led by 10 points apiece from Haggerty, Mercer and Fogell, Southern Maine totaled 93 points to finish third among the 18 teams competing in the event. Bates College placed first scoring 124.50 points followed by Colby College in second place in 97.50 points. Keene State was fourth with 81 points, and Amherst College rounded out the top five with 76 points. Haggerty led a one-two finish by Southern Maine in the pole vault clearing 4.42 meters (14-6) to claim the top spot. He was followed by sophomore John Davis (Westbrook, Maine) who had a vault of 3.95 meters (12-11 1/2). Fogell won the high jump clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4). Mercer claimed first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 58.71 seconds. Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) turned in a pair of strong performances for the Huskies, placing in two events. Murchie earned a fifth place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.91, and took third place in the 100-meter dash crossing the finish line in 11.27. Junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) each placed in the 400 meters. Sawyer earned a third place finish in a time of 50.11, while Gobbi placed sixth in a time of 52.15. In field events, senior Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) and freshman Sammy Neang (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) both earned a fourth place finish. Gooding took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters (20-1), while Neang was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.52 meters (41-1). USM was scheduled to compete at the Bates Invitational on April 12, but that meet has been cancelled. Athletic department officials are attempting to find another meet on that date.

Wheeler led a 1-2-3 finish by USM in the event, followed closely by his twin brother, Nick, and sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Thornton Academy). Haggerty won the pole vault clearing 13-11 1/4 (4.25 meters). Southern Maine finished in fourth place among the 14 teams competing with 74 points. Dartmouth College won the meet with 233 points. MEDFORD, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team used an impressive, 1-2-3 finish in the 5,000 meters by seniors Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Thornton Academy) to highlight a tremendous outing Saturday afternoon at the Tufts University Snowflake Invitational held at the Ellis Oval/Dussault Track in Medford, Mass. Southern Maine finished fourth among 14 competing teams with a total of 74 points. Dartmouth College won the meet with 223 points, followed by Tufts with 154 points. Bates College placed third with 107 points. Curtis Wheeler crossed the finish line first in the 5,000 with a time of 15 minutes, 23.87 seconds, followed closely by his twin brother Nick in a time of 15:23.90. Jasud claimed third place with a time of 15:47.65. Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) joined Curtis Wheeler as one of two Huskies to win an event. Haggerty claimed the top spot in the pole vault clearing 13-11 1/4 (4.25 meters). Southern Maine received several strong performances in the sprint events, including a second place finish by senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) and a third place finish from junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine). Murchie placed second in the 100 meters with a finals time of 11.47, while Sawyer placed third in the 400 meters clocking a time of 52.46 seconds. The Huskies 4 x 100-meter relay team took second place in that event with its time of 44.31. In the 200 meters, junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) finished sixth and seventh respectively turning in times of 23.21 and 23.68. In the middle distance events, the Huskies received a third-place performance from senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:10.88, while sophomore Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) placed seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.00. In the field events, freshman Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) placed fifth in the high jump clearing 1.76 meters (5-9 1/4) and freshman Michael Parisi (East Longmeadow, Mass.) earned an eighth place finish in the javelin throw with a distance of 41.85 meters (137-4). Southern Maine returns to action on April 5 (11:00 a.m.) when it travels to the Fitchburg State Invitational.

Neang Named LEC Field Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Sammy Neang (Springvale, Maine/Sanford), a member of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team, has been selected by the Little East Conference as its first-ever Field Rookie of the Week for the spring outdoor season. The award was announced Monday afternoon. The LEC expanded its weekly track and field awards program this spring to recognize the top rookie performances. The track athlete and rookie of the week recognizes the top performances in the running events while the field athlete and rookie of the week acknowledges the top efforts in the jumps, throws and pole vault. Neang received the accolade for his first-place performance in the triple jump at the Northeastern University Husky Spring Open on Saturday. Neang jumped 41-6 1/2 (12.66 meters) to win the event at the non-team scoring meet. Southern Maine Opens Outdoor Season at NU Husky Spring Open
DEDHAM, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team opened its 2008 season Saturday competing in the Northeastern University Husky Spring Open held at the Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass. Southern Maine received some strong performances in the non-scoring meet. Freshman Sammy Neang (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) was the lone USM competitor to win an event capturing the triple jump with an effort of 41-6 1/2 (12.66 meters). Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.38 seconds. Sophomore Jake Berube (Spotsylvania, Va.) also took a second in long jump with a leap of 20-1 (6.12 meters). Freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) grabbed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.36. Other top five finishers included sophomore Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) and senior Chris Jackson (Bath, Maine/Morse) who were fourth and fifth in the 200 meters with times of 23.72 and 24.01 respectively; senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) came home third in the 1500 meters with his time of 4:07.40; sophomore Will Fulford (Kennebunk, Maine) took fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:17.14; and senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and sophomore John Davis (Westbrook, Maine) went four-five in the pole vault clearing 14-0 and 13-3 respectively. Three Named USM Men's Outdoor Track and Field Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and juniors Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) have been named captains of the 2008 University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team. Tobie, Sawyer and Spaulding served as captains of the indoor track and field team this past winter, while Tobie also served as a captain of the 2007 men's cross country team. "All three of these student-athletes have earned the respect of their teammates," noted USM head coach Scott Hutchinson. "Their work ethic and desire for the team to succeed is unmatched and I look forward to their continued leadership as the team works to achieve its goals." Competing in middle distance events, Tobie is coming off of a solid indoor season. At the 2008 New England Division III Championships, Tobie helped 4 x 800-meter relay team establish a new school record in the event with a time of 8 minutes, 4.34 seconds helping the Huskies to a program-best seventh place finish. During the 2007 outdoor season, Tobie earned All-New England Alliance honors a part of the USM's 4 x 400-meter relay team that placed fourth overall in a time of 3:31.81. Tobie also earned All-New England Alliance honors in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:36.30. Spaulding had an outstanding sophomore season in 2007 earning All-ECAC honors in the decathlon scoring a school-record 5,840 points. Spaulding's second-place finish in the decathlon helped the Huskies' achieve a sixth place finish in the 44-team field. Spaulding earned a trio of third and second place finishes during the grueling two-day, 10-event decathlon. Spaulding placed third in the 100-meter dash (12.01 seconds), discus throw (32.98 meters) and javelin (43.76 meters) and turned in second place finishes in the 400-meter dash (53.06 seconds), shot put (12.31 meters) and long jump (6.17 meters). In the final event of the decathlon, the 1500 meters, Spaulding placed first with a time of 4:42.97. Sawyer earned numerous honors for Southern Maine dominating the track in the 400 meters. He earned All-ECAC, All-New England, Division III All-New England, All-Alliance and All-Little East Conference honors at 400 meters for the Huskies, running a season best time of 49.28 in the New England Championships. Sawyer also earned All-Alliance and All-LEC honors as part of the Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay team. The Huskies open their 2008 spring season on March 22 (10:00 a.m.) at the Northeastern Husky Spring Invitational. They will be at the Tufts Invitational on March 29 (12:00 p.m.). In April, Southern Maine will compete in five events including the 2008 Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships. The Huskies will compete at the Fitchburg State Invitational on April 5 (11:00 a.m.), the Bates College Invitational on April 12 (11:00 a.m.), the Holy Cross Decathlon on April 16-17 (12:00 p.m.), the State of Maine Championships hosted by Colby College on April 19 (1:00 p.m.). The Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships, hosted by Rhode Island College, close out the month on April 26 (11:00 a.m.). In May, the Huskies will send competitors to three events including the New England Division III Championships on May 1-3, the NEIcAAA New England Championships on May 8-10, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships on May 15-16.
