Freshman Tyler Metevier (Kittery, Maine) had two goals to pace the Eagles. Metievier put Husson up 1-0 at 25:36 when he put home a rebound off a shot by junior Justin Gauvin (Woolwich, Maine). Metievier found space past USM junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) who made the initial save on Gauvin shot. Senior Natapong Kongsuriya (Hampden, Maine) set up classmate Josh Bartlett (Bowdoinham, ME) two minutes later putting Husson up 2-0. Kongsuriya made a rush down the right side and played the ball to the front of the net and Bartlett was there to finish the play. Kongsuriya finished with two assists as he set up Metiever at the 76:51 mark to put the game out of reach 3-0. He back kicked a pass to Metiever on the left side and Metiever shaped a ball to the top right corner. Five USM Players Named to All-LEC Team Reilly Tabbed as Top Defender; Keller Named Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Five members of the University of Southern Maine men's soccer team have been named to the 2008 All-Little East Conference team that was announced recently following a vote by the conference's eight head coaches. Named to the All-Little East first team were senior defender Colin Reilly (Evergreen, Colo.), senior forward Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) and junior midfielder Peter McHugh (Scarborough, Maine). Earning spots on the second team were senior forward Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia/Portland) and junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson). In addition to the five all-conference selections, LEC commissioner Jonathan Harper also announced that Reilly had been selected by the coaches as the Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Mike Keller was voted by his peers as the Coach of the Year. "This is a great honor for these players and our program," commented Keller. "They deserve the all recognition they've received. They dedicated themselves to do well this year and their play, and the results they attained, was indicative of that dedication." Reilly is the first USM player to be tabbed as the LEC's top defensive player since the award's inception in 2002. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound defender has been a stalwart player on the Huskies' back line for four years. This is the third straight season that Reilly, who was a second team pick in 2006 and 2007, has been named to the all-conference team. A two-time captain, he has played in all 21 matches this season earning one assist. Keller is the second USM men's coach to win Coach of the Year honors in the 20-year history of conference. Eric Miller was the previous winner in 2004. Since taking over the reins of the program from Miller in 2005, Keller is guided the Huskies to a four-year record of 37-36-5, including 10-or-more wins the last three seasons, and the program's first-ever LEC regular season title this season. Last month, Keller, now in his 18th season overall, recorded his 100th career win when USM defeated Plymouth State University. "I look at the Coach of the Year award as a team award. If the team does not go out and work hard to get a positive result, you don't win awards like this. I definitely look at it as a team award earned by the players and coaching staff, not one individual," responded Keller when asked for a reaction to being picked as the top coach. Cox earned his third consecutive all-conference honor after having the best offensive season of his career. The dynamic 5-foot-11 forward, who also played in midfield, scored nine goals, including three game winners, and dished off five assists for 23 points. McHugh picked up his first all-conference accolade after leading the Huskies in scoring this season with 13 goals and five assists for 31 points. The 5-foot-10 central midfielder is also one of the top defensive players in the conference. Kreps earned a spot on the second team after fashioning a 1.23 goals against average in 16 matches. The 5-foot-11 keeper, who transferred to USM in 2007, posted a 9-6-0 record, made 66 saves and had six shutouts this season. He was named the LEC Goalkeeper of the Week three times during the season. One of the most feared offensive players in the LEC over the past four seasons, Bajic picked up his fourth consecutive all-conference honor. In 14 matches this season, Bajic scored six goals, including three game winners, and has a team-high seven assists for 19 points. The 6-foot-3 forward was a first team all-conference selection the past two seasons, and a second team selection in his rookie campaign. The school's second all-time leading scorer, Bajic was the LEC Rookie of the Year in 2005, and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Southern Maine, 12-8-1 overall, travels to Bangor, Maine, on Wednesday (1:00 p.m.) to play Husson College in a quarterfinal round match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.

Little East Conference Tournament - Semifinals #4 Plymouth State Upsets Top-Seeded Southern Maine 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Semir Mehmedovic (Concord, N.H./Franklin) scored two goals and added an assist to lead fourth-seeded Plymouth State University to a 3-0 victory over the top-seeded University of Southern Maine Wednesday afternoon in a semifinal round match of the 2008 Little East Conference Tournament. The win was the third straight for the Panthers, and extends their unbeaten string to five matches (4-0-1). The Panthers, who beat fifth-seeded Western Connecticut State University, 6-0, in a first round match Monday, advance to the championship match on Saturday against the winner of the other semifinal match between third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University and second-seeded Rhode Island College. The Huskies, who won the LEC regular season title for the first time in the league's history, finish the campaign 12-8-1. Mehmedovic gave the Panthers the only goal they would need in the 48th minute running down a diagonal pass over the top from senior Gareth Stephens (Yeovil, England) and cutting a shot back past USM junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.). Mehmedovic, who had a hat trick in Monday's match, got his second goal of this match in the 82nd minute converting an assist from senior George Delano (Kingston, N.H.). With the Huskies pushing everyone forward, Mehmedovic was stopped twice by Kreps, but the second rebound went to Delano who lofted a shot into the far side of the net in the 88th minute. The first 45 minutes went by scoreless, but each side had good scoring opportunities. Mehmedovic made a great individual run through the USM defense before cutting a shot back just wide of the post. USM senior Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) found the framework twice, hitting the left post with a header and later the crossbar with a bouncing, 45-yard shot over PSU senior goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) that hit the underside of the bar and came back out. Shute finished the match registering seven saves to post his third shutout of the season. Kreps was credited with five stops. The Huskies are the last team to defeat Eastern in conference play, winning a 3-2 decision last October 13 at Gorham, Maine. Eastern remained in third place in the conference but pulled to within two points of Rhode Island College and one point of Southern Maine. Rhode Island tied Plymouth State Saturday to move a point ahead of Southern Maine in the standings. With the score tied 2-2 in the 61st minute, Eastern freshman midfielder Matt Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) took a cross from freshman midfielder Scott Mishley (Trumbull, Conn.), touched it once, and beat Southern Maine junior keeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) to give Eastern the lead for good. Fantl, who entered play sharing the LEC goal and point lead with USM junior midfielder Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine), scored his 13th goal of the season eight minutes later. Fantl gathered a loose ball in the six-yard box that was misplayed by the USM defense and beat Kreps to make it 4-2. Southern Maine, which lost out to Eastern for the conference regular-season title on the last day of last year, had tied the match 2-2 eleven minutes into the second half when senior midfielder Derek Peters (Springvale, Maine) scored on the rebound of a penalty kick by McHugh that was saved by Eastern freshman keeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, N.J.). McHugh's 12th goal of the season pulled the Huskies to within one with 14 minutes left, but the visitors could not gain the equalizer. McHugh's goal into the upper right-hand portion of the net, followed a USM free kick that was deflected to the top of the 18-yard box. The shot eluded the dive of Appel and pulled McHugh even with Fantl atop the LEC in goals and points (29). Southern Maine's best opportunity to tie the match came with five minutes left, when senior midfielder Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass.) received a cross from junior back Brian King (Gorham, Maine) , but his shot was headed away. Eastern visits Fitchburg State College Wednesday (7:00 p.m.). Southern Maine is at Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday (5:00 p.m.). UMaine Farmington Downs Southern Maine, 3-1
FARMINGTON, Maine -- Freshman James Tollefson (Middletown, R.I.) scored a goal and assisted on another as the University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer squad notched a 3-1 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday at Prescott Field. Sophomore Sean Raph (Waterville, Maine) and senior Michael Camacho (Chelmsford, Mass.) each added a score as the Beavers improved to 5-6 with a trip to Thomas College for a North Atlantic Conference game scheduled for Saturday. The Huskies dropped to 9-5-1 with a Little East Conference tilt at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Raph headed a pretty cross by Tollefson at 13:28 to stake a 1-0 edge for the Beavers at intermission. Farmington padded its advantage early in the second half on a play started by a free kick by senior Andrew Merriken (Salem, N.H.) in the backfield. Sophomore Dillon Clark (Old Town, Maine) hauled in Merriken's boot in the corner and crossed it to Tollefson, who lofted a header in for a 2-0 lead at 52:22. USM senior forward Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) tightened the lead with a nice individual effort --bullying his way down the side and firing a bullet in -- at 65:58. Camacho sealed the win when he took a pass by junior Christopher Puffer (Berwick, Maine) and fired a shot past the charging defense. The shot clipped the post, but glided over the line for a 3-1 command with 11 minutes left to play. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Dennett (Augusta, Maine) made 10 saves in the victory. Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half on a pair of outstanding plays by senior Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy). On the opening goal, Cox flicked the ball past UMD starting goalkeeper Kevin Pelsinski (Merrimack, N.H.) toward goal while lying on his back, and sophomore Nick Johnson (South Portland, Maine) guided it into the vacated net at the 11:00 mark. Cox scored the second goal less than three minutes later by splitting two UMD defenders and slotting a 15-yard shot past Pelsinski. The Corsairs tallied twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to get level. Sophomore Mike Alves (Seekonk, Mass.) fired a shot past USM junior keeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) in the 51st minute to cut the deficit in half. King volleyed in senior Oliver Fadly's (Lexington, Mass.) corner kick in the 27th minute to make it 2-0. Southern Maine Upends Plymouth State 2-0 Coach Mike Keller Get 100th Career Win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Senior Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) scored one goal and assisted on the other Saturday afternoon as the University of Southern Maine remained unbeaten in Little East Conference play following a 2-0 victory over Plymouth State University in men's soccer action at Panther Field. The victory puts USM in a tie for first place in the LEC with Rhode Island College, both schools with 3-0 conference records. The Huskies improve to 8-3-1 overall, while PSU drops to 4-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in LEC games. The outcome also gave USM head coach Mike Keller his 100th career victory. Keller, now in his fifth season at USM (1992, 2005-2008; 42-38-5) also had stints as head coach at the University of Maine Presque Isle (1990), Thomas College (1993-97) and Maine Maritime Academy (1998-2004). Cox scored his fourth goal of the season with just over four minutes remaining in the first half, with an assist from classmate Ben Slagle (Scarborough, Maine). It was still a tight game until Cox set up junior Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine/Scarborough) for his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the final minute of play. PSU finished with a 9-6 advantage in shots, but could not put one past junior David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson), who finished with five saves for his third shutout of the season. GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Scott Brown (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the only goal of the match in the 19th minute to give Colby College a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference men's soccer match played Wednesday afternoon at a soggy USM Soccer Field. The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Mules, and got them back level at 3-3-0. The Mules are unbeaten in their last 26 matches against the Huskies, and now lead the all-time series 27-6-3. The Huskies, who had their four-match winning streak snapped, slip to 7-3-1 overall. Brown capitalized on a miscue in the Southern Maine defense to win a 50-50 ball in the penalty area and beat USM junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) with a 15-yard shot. The goal was the second of the season for Brown. Colby's junior goalkeeper Doug Sibor (Hingham, Mass./Milton Academy) and his defensive back line made the goal stand up, limiting the Huskies to just seven shots in the match. Ararat) scored six minutes into the first sudden-death overtime period to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in a Little East Conference men’s soccer match played Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Memorial Field in Portland, Maine. Kreps, Reilly Recognized by Little East Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's soccer have been recognized by the Little East Conference for their outstanding play during the week of September 15-21. Junior David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) was picked as the Goalkeeper of the Week, and senior defender Colin Reilly (Evergreen, Colo.) was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week. Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced the weekly honors Monday afternoon. Kreps and Reilly are the second and third members of the USM team to be recognized by the LEC this season. Kreps and Reilly were key figures last week as the Huskies posted impressive wins over Bowdoin College and LEC rival Keene State College. Kreps allowed just one goal (on a penalty kick) and made seven saves in the two matches as the Huskies downed Bowdoin, 3-1, and shut out Keene State on the road, 5-0. Kreps lowered his seasonal goals against average to 1.00, and he picked up his first shutout of the year in the win over Keene State. Reilly, a two-time All-Little East second team selection, was the anchor in the middle of the Huskies' defense that allowed only eight shots on goal against sides ranked sixth (KSC) and seventh (Bowdoin) in last week's NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) regional poll. The Huskies, 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the LEC, travel to Thomas College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-conference match. ################################################################################ Saturday, September 20, 2008
Southern Maine Explodes Past Keene State 5-0
KEENE, N.H. -- The University of Southern Maine got goals from five different players in the first half and went on to post a 5-0 victory over Keene State College in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon. The win was the second straight for the Huskies and lifts their record to 5-2-1 overall. The Owls, winless in their last three matches, slip to 2-3-2 overall. The match was the conference opener for both sides. Southern Maine burst on top in the opening minute as sophomore Alex Burnham (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) got his foot on a cross from senior Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) to collect his first goal as a Husky. Three minutes later, Cox was on the receiving end of a pass from senior Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia/Portland) and placed a shot into the upper left hand corner. Senior Ben Slagle (Scarborough, Maine/Bridgton Academy) got his head onto a cross from Bajic in the 25th minute to make it 3-0. Bajic's two assists now gives him 102 points for his career, five shy of the school record of 107 set by John Sylva (1974-77). Junior Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine/Scarborough) and sophomore Nick Johnson (South Portland, Maine) found the net in the 36th and 40th minutes respectively to give USM a five-goal advantage at halftime. Bajic Scores Twice as USM Downs Bowdoin 3-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia/Portland) scored a pair of second half goals and had an assist to lead the University of Southern Maine men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin College in a non- conference match Wednesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field. The two goals give Bajic 44 for his career and moved him past Don Franzese (1979-82) into second place on the all-time goal scoring list. With the five points, Bajic became just the second USM player to reach 100 points (44 g, 12a) for his career. Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when junior Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine/Scarborough) redirected a low cross from Bajic past Bowdoin junior goalkeeper Garrick Sheldon (Cabin John, Md./Walt Whitman) for his fifth goal of the season. That was only goal of the opening 45 minutes as USM had a 5-2 advantage in shots. Bajic got his first goal of the match, and the eventual game winner, in the 58th minute when he blasted a 10-yard shot from a bad angle off a Bowdoin defender. He got his second goal in the 67th minute converting on a free kick from about 25 yards out. Bowdoin got on the board with 13:40 left to play when junior Hugh Fleming (Lansdale, Penn.) buried a penalty kick for his second goal of the season. USM junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) had a strong game in goal. He and Sheldon each were credited with two saves. The win snapped a two-match losing skid for the Huskies and improved their overall record to 4-2-1. It was the first win for the Huskies against the Polar Bears since 2004, and just the fourth in 28 tries all-time. The Polar Bears dropped their second straight to fall to 1-2-0 overall. Steve May Named LEC Goalkeeper of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Steve May (Brunswick, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's soccer team has been selected as the Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for matches played through September 7. The announcement of the weekly awards was made this afternoon by the conference office. This is the first time in his career at USM that May has been recognized by the conference. Usually the Huskies starting left back, May took over in goal in the season-opening match against Colby-Sawyer College at the Babson Soccer Classic when starting goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) was injured with 19 minutes to play in regulation. May picked up the win when the Huskies scored the game-winning goal with under nine minutes to play in regulation. After surrendering three goals and making seven saves in a 3-3, overtime tie against Wentworth Institute of Technology, May posted his first shutout of the season stopping four shots in a 1-0, overtime victory at the University of New England. He finished the week registering one save in 84 minutes of action in a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's College. For the season, May has posted a 0.89 goals against average, a 3-0-1 record and made 12 saves. A two-year starter at left back, May had made two previous appearances in goal for the Huskies prior to this season. Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday afternoon (4:30 p.m.) when Tufts University visits the USM Soccer Field. ################################################################################ Saturday, September 6, 2008

Senior midfielder Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass./Hebron Academy) got one back for the Huskies in the 67th minute on a breakaway set up by senior forward Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia/Portland). Junior midfielder Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine/Scarborough) got the equalizer in the 72nd minute knocking home a pass from sophomore forward Nick Johnson (South Portland, Maine). Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the final 18 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods. In the opening 45 minutes, the Huskies got on the board first as Bajic found the net in the 12th minute of play. Southern Maine Downs Colby-Sawyer 2-1
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior Ben Slagle (Scarborough, Maine) scored the game-winning goal with 8:33 left in regulation to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a thrilling, 2-1 victory over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers in the first round of the 2008 Babson Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon. It was the first contest of the season for both squads. Colby-Sawyer grabbed the lead midway through the first half, as senior Doug Currie (Harvard, Mass.) took a breakaway feed from sophomore Doug McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.) on the right side and beat USM junior goalie David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) for a 1-0 advantage . Southern Maine answered with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half as junior Peter McHugh (Portland, Maine) headed in a nice cross from classmate Matt Dawes (Sidney, Maine) at 37:17 to even the score at 1-1. Things stayed that way until late in the second half, when McHugh found Slagle at the top of the box. The senior midfielder then turned and ripped a beautiful bending shot past the outstretched hands of junior keeper Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) into the upper right corner, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Kreps stopped two shots in net for USM before leaving the game with an injury with 20 minutes left in the second. Junior Steve May (Brunswick, Maine) came on in relief and did not face a shot on net as he earned his first win of the season. Feltes was absolutely magnificent in defeat for Colby-Sawyer, finishing with 16 saves, including several on one-on-one breaks. His finest effort came at the 23-minute mark, when he came charging out of net to make a tremendous stop on a Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) shot. Gassman then managed to deflect a defender's attempted clear back toward the net, but Feltes raced back to the line and made a diving bid to clear it just outside the left post. Both teams return to action Sunday for day two of the Babson Classic. Colby-Sawyer takes on host Babson at 1:00 p.m., while USM will match up against Wentworth at 3:30 p.m. Babson downed Wentworth 3-0 in the opening game Saturday. Little East Conference Preseason Coaches Poll Announced Eastern Connecticut and Keene State Share Top Honors Southern Maine Picked for Third
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University and Keene State College men's soccer teams share the top ranking in the 2008 Little East Conference preseason coaches' poll after a vote by the conference's eight head coaches. The Warriors are making their debut atop the preseason standings, while the Owls have earned at least a share of the top billing in eight of the past nine rankings. The top-two projected teams in the Little East Conference will meet at Keene State on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. Under the leadership of Head Coach Greg DeVIto, Eastern Connecticut firmly placed itself on the national landscape last Fall, turning in the program's best campaign in over 15 years. The 2007 Warriors reached double digits in victories for the first time since 1992, captured the program's first Little East Conference Championship Tournament and berth into the NCAA Div. III Tournament field. DeVito led his charges to an overall record of 11-7-3, including a conference best 5-1-1 mark in league play. Eastern Connecticut will welcome back an experienced squad that features 12 letterman and nine starters. Striker Maxim Fantl (West Hartford, Conn.), a 2007 NSCAA All-New England third-team pick, will lead the charge in the attacking third of the field, scoring 22 points on nine goals and four assists during his sophomore campaign. The Warriors kick off the program's 48th season at Westfield State College on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. Keene State qualified for the NCAA Div. III Tournament for the ninth time in the past 11 campaigns in 2007, advancing to the second round for the second straight season. Head Coach Dr. Ron Butcher continued his impressive run of 11 consecutive 10-plus win seasons, guiding the Owls to an overall record of 12-5- 5. Butcher will welcome back five starters from last fall, including first- team all-conference selection Alex Horne (Harvard, Mass.). The third-team NSCAA All-New England pick shared the conference lead in game-winning goals (5), while ranking second in points (23) and goals (10). Three nationally-ranked clubs in the NSCAA preseason poll grace Keene State's schedule, No. 22 Salisbury (Aug. 31), No. 19 Williams (Sept. 30), and No. 1 Middlebury (Oct. 28). Head Coach Mike Keller led the University of Southern Maine to the program's second postseason invitation in the past four seasons, receiving a bid to the 2007 Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Div. III Tournament. The Huskies registered their third season in the past four years with at least 10 victories, sporting a 10-9-1 overall record. The third place preseason ranking is the Huskies' highest for data available since 1992, and first time the team has been predicted to finish in the top half of the standings. Keller will once again look for the senior tandem of striker Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia) and midfielder Greg Cox (Brookline, Mass.) to shoulder the load offensively. In 2007, the NSCAA All-Region honorees combined for 41 points, recording 17 markers and seven helpers. Bajic was selected the conference's top offensive player for the second straight season, while Cox joined his classmate on the first-team. Southern Maine will square off against Colby-Sawyer College at the Babson College Classic in the 2008 opener on Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. The top five teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the 2008 Little East Conference Championship Tournament with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds receiving a bye and the right to host a semifinal contest on Wednesday, Nov. 5. For the first time in the conference's history, the No. 5 seed will travel to the fourth seed on Monday, Nov. 3 for a first round match with the winner advancing to face the top seed in the semifinals. The conference champion will be crowned on Saturday, Nov. 8 and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Little East Conference's automatic qualifier. Completing the preseason poll in projected order of finish are Rhode Island College (37), Plymouth State University (32), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (22), Western Connecticut State University (22), and University of Massachusetts Boston (19).
