Stevenson and Warren Earn Little East Conference Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team have been named to the All-Little East Conference second team. Stevenson and Warren were named second team first doubles pair in a vote by league coaches. The Conference office honored 12-student-athlete first and second All- Little East teams, consisting of one player at each of the six singles flights and a doubles pairing for each of the three teams. The Huskies’ 2009 team co-captains, Stevenson and Warren combined to post a 10-2 (.833 winning percentage) overall mark at first doubles to lead the Huskies. In conference action, Stevenson and Warren boasted a 5-1 record. The duo’s lone conference loss of the season came against first team all-conference pair Matt Fogel and Wayne Tentler of Western Connecticut. Southern Maine finished the season with a 6-8 overall record and a 2-4 mark in the Little East.

Salem State Edges Out Southern Maine 5-4 in LEC Semifinal
SALEM, Mass. – Freshman Zak Leete (Harwich, Mass.) pulled out a hard- earned 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0 win at fifth singles to deliver the top-seeded Salem State College Vikings a 5-4 win over the fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the semifinals of the 2009 Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Central Campus Tennis Courts in Salem, Mass. With the win, the Vikings, the 2009 regular season champions, advance to the championship finals and will play either Bridgewater State or UMass Dartmouth for the tournament championship and the LEC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Salem State is now 8-3 on the season. The Huskies conclude their season with a record of 6-8. In a marathon match that took five hours to complete after being moved indoors due to inclement weather, both teams battled back and fourth. The Huskies led 4-3 after all three doubles matches and three of the singles matches had been completed. Salem State rallied to tie the score with a three-set victory at sixth singles as Viking freshman Johan DaSilva (Venezuela/Colegio Aplicawon) defeated Southern Maine freshman Terrance Classen (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, setting up Leete’s match winning point. Leete was able to come out on top of a closely contested battle in fifth singles defeating Husky sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett). Southern Maine senior captain Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) was the lone double-winner for the Huskies. Playing in his final collegiate match for Southern Maine, Stevenson downed Salem State sophomore Rob Random (Newbury, Mass./Triton) 6-2, 6-2 at second singles and teamed for a 8-6 win at first doubles with junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine). Stevenson and Warren earned the first of two doubles points for USM downing Salem State’s Random and junior Adrien Malosse (Triel Sur Seine/North Broward Prep). “The match was very competitive and very well played on both ends,” commented USM first-year head coach Jon Parry. “We have a bit of disappointment from our perspective, but a lot of positives to build on in the upcoming season.” Southern Maine’s Caron and Classen also earned a doubles point picking up an 8-5 win at third doubles, while junior Steven Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Salem State sophomore Alex Eisath (Renon, Italy/HOB- Kutner). Southern Maine Downs Western Connecticut to Advance to LEC Semifinals Huskies Face Top Seeded Salem State on Friday
GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) secured the match-winning point at fifth singles to lead the fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-2 win over the fifth-seeded Western Connecticut Colonials in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Championship Tuesday afternoon at the Gorham High School Tennis Courts in Gorham, Maine. With the win, Southern Maine advanced to the semifinals of the LEC tournament and will face the top-seeded Salem State College Vikings at the Central Campus Tennis Courts in Salem, Mass. on Friday at 12:00 p.m. The Vikings (7-3, 6-0 LEC) are the 2009 Little East Conference regular-season champions. Caron defeated Western Connecticut freshman Michael Knortz (Ridgefield, Conn.) 7-5, 6-0 to claim the match-clinching fifth point and avenged a regular season loss to Knortz. Knortz defeated Caron 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in Western Connecticut’s 6-3 win over USM on April 18, 2009. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead following the doubles matches. Junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) and senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) downed the Colonial tandem of senior Matt Fogle (Westport, Conn.) and sophomore Andrew Kelley (Weston, Conn.) 8-6 at first doubles. The Huskies also earned a point at second doubles on the heels of an 8-2 win by junior Steven Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) and senior Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine) over Western Connecticut junior Joseph Pacelli (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Matthew Boisvert (New Hartford, Conn.). Western Connecticut earned one of its two points with a closely contested 9-7 win at third doubles. Bridgewater State Bests Southern Maine 6-3
GORHAM, Maine – The Bridgewater State College Bears claimed two out of three doubles points and earned three out of six in singles action to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 6-3 in a Little East Conference men’s tennis match Friday afternoon in Gorham, Maine. With the win Bridgewater State improves to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the Little East. Southern Maine falls to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the LEC. Senior Matt Charest (Somerset, Mass.) won the battle at first singles to lead the Bears downing USM junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) 7-5, 6-0. The Huskies earned victories at both second and third singles. Southern Maine senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) battled back from a one game deficit to defeat Bears’ freshman Duncan Yarworth (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) 5-7, 6-2, 10-6. Junior Steven Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) picked up the 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles downing senior Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, Mass./Dennis- Yarmouth). Bowdoin Downs Southern Maine 8-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College Polar Bears swept the doubles points and earned victories in five out of the six singles matches to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 in a non-conference tennis match Thursday afternoon at Pickard Tennis Courts in Brunswick, Maine. With the loss, Southern Maine slips to 5-6 overall. Bowdoin halts a two- match losing streak to improve to 11-5 on the season. Polar Bear doubles tandem of junior Matt Knise (McLean, Va./Gonzaga) and Andrew Won (Dix Hill, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) earned Bowdoin’s first doubles victory of the match to lead the way. Western Connecticut Slips Past Southern Maine 6-3
DANBURY, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University Colonials won five out of six singles points to earn a 6-3 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men’s tennis match Saturday afternoon at Westside Courts in Danbury, Conn. Earning their second win of the season, the Colonials improve to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Little East. The loss stops a two-match winning streak for the Huskies who dip to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference action. Senior Matt Fogel (Westport, Conn./Staples) was the lone double-winner of the day for the Colonials, earning a 6-0, 6-2 (ret.) win over USM senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) at second singles. Southern Maine Sinks Rhode Island College 9-0
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – For the second straight match the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team earned a 9-0 win defeating the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference match Friday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts in Providence, Rhode Island. The win is the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the Little East. Rhode Island College falls to 2-9 with the loss and remains winless in the conference at 0-3. Junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) and senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) paired to win decisively at first doubles defeating RIC sophomores Nathan Rebello (Pawtucket, Rhode Island/Tolman) and Matthew Allard (Harrisville, Rhode Island/Burrillville) 8-0 to lead the Huskies. With the win, Southern Maine improves its overall record to 4-4. The Terriers even out at 3-3 with the loss. Southern Maine Downs UMass Boston 9-0
GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis co- captains senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and junior Joshua Warren (Hermon, Maine) combined to earn an 8-4 win at first doubles and each earned a hard-fought singles victory to spearhead a 9-0 win over the UMass Boston Beacons Tuesday evening in a Little East Conference match at the Costello Sports Complex Field house in Gorham, Maine. The win erases a two-match slide for the Huskies who even out at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Beacons fall to 1-4 overall and drop to 1-1 in the conference. Warren and Stevenson helped USM capture all three doubles points downing the UMass Boston tandem of seniors Ali Al-Sabbagh (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) en route to the sweep. In first singles action, Warren fought off Braude 7-6 in the first set and then cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set to earn the point. UMass Dartmouth Defeats Southern Maine 8-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs men’s tennis team won three split set matches in singles to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 in a Little East Conference match Sunday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex in North Dartmouth, Mass. With the win the Corsairs remain undefeated and improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the LEC. Southern Maine dips to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action. The Corsairs began the match winning two of the three doubles points and then got a three-set win at number five singles from senior Christoph Forster (Reading, Mass.) over USM senior Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine), 6-2, 5-7, 7- 5. UMass Dartmouth won two more singles matches after dropping the first set. Sophomore Mason Viau (Marion, Mass./Bishop Hendricken) defeated USM junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) 4-6, 6-4 (12-10) winning in a super-tiebreaker at first singles. Endicott Sinks Southern Maine 7-0
GORHAM, Maine – Endicott senior Josh Schoen (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) earned an 8-6 pro set win at first singles and helped gut out a 9-8 (7-5) win at first doubles to lead the Gulls to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men’s tennis match Monday evening at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine. Earning its third straight win, Endicott College improves to 4-3 overall. The loss drops Southern Maine to 2-3. Schoen edged out USM senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) 8-6 at first singles and then teamed with junior Dan Murray (Coventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) for a hard-earned 9-8 (7-5) in the top spot of the doubles points. Stevenson and junior Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) forced six match points before succumbing to Schoen and Murray. Following Murray and Schoen’s lead, the Gulls swept all three doubles points to set the tone for the match. The Huskies match the points difficult however as sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and freshman Terrence Classen (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) pushed the Gull tandem of senior Marc Maloney (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) and junior Scott Kitchen (Norwell, Mass.) rallying from a 6-3 deficit to not the score up at 6-6 before falling 8-6 at third doubles. After the doubles sweep, Endicott was able to clinch the match winning the fourth, fifth and sixth singles points in succession, including a hard fought 6- 4, 6-4 decision at fifth singles by senior Gabriel Moraga (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) over Caron. Southern Maine Trounces Wheelock College 9-0
GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team swept all nine available points en route to a 9-0 win over the Wheelock College Wildcats in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine. The Huskies improved their overall record to 2-1, earning their second 9-0 victory of the season. Wheelock College, playing in its season opening match, falls to 0-1 with the loss. Moving up several positions for the match with Wheelock, sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) led the Huskies at first singles cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Wildcats’ Wilson Chang. Huskies Open Season with 9-0 Win Over Gordon
GORHAM, Maine –- Senior captain Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and junior captain Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) earned convincing wins at first and second singles respectvely to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team to a dominating 9-0 win over the Gordon College Scots in their season opening match Thursday evening at Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine. Playing in its first match of the spring season, USM is 1-0. The loss drops Gordon to 2-5 overall. Stevenson and Warren began the match taking a decisive 8-1 win at first doubles over the Gordon duo of freshman Gary Gaudio and senior Blake Larson to pace the Huskies to the sweep. Stevenson then went on to down Gaudio 6-1, 6-1 at first singles, while Warren cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Larson at second singles. Junior Steven Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) and sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) paired for an 8-6 win at second doubles and senior Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine/Windham) and junior Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) posted an 8-6 win at third singles. Lent and Caron downed the Scots sophomores Carl Quinion and Evan Williamson, while McGowan and Kelly defeated freshman Eric Musser and junior Josh Cornwall. Lent, Caron, McGowan and Kelly were each victorious in their singles matches, including a 6-1, 6-3 win for Lent over Gordon’s Musser at third singles. Warren and Stevenson Named Men’s Tennis Captains
GORHAM, Maine – Senior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and junior Joshua Warren (Hermon, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team have been named co-captains for the 2009 season. Southern Maine first-year head coach Jon Parry made the announcement as the Huskies prepare for their season-opening match against Gordon College Thursday (4:00) in Gorham, Maine. Finishing as the 2008 Little East Conference runners-up, Southern Maine will rely on Stevenson, one of the Huskies two seniors, and Warren to lead the Huskies in their 12-match schedule in 2009. Last season at the championship, Stevenson and Warren teamed to claim the first doubles title to help USM to its second place finish. In three seasons, Stevenson has compiled a record of 30-9 (.769 winning percentage) in singles action. In each of his three seasons, Stevenson has earned the title of conference champion. In 2008, Stevenson and Warren took the first doubles title, while in 2007 and 2006 Stevenson was the top player at fifth singles and sixth singles respectively. As a junior Stevenson compiled a record of 9-5 at no. 2 singles after posting records of 11-2 at no. 5 singles as a sophomore and 10-2 at no. 6 singles as a freshman. Stevenson was also the 2007 LEC champion at second doubles with former USM standout Chris Chaffee. Claiming the no. 2 singles championship as a freshman in 2007 with a 11-2 record, Warren competed as the Huskies no. 1 singles player in 2008 finishing the season with an 8-7 record. Warren was the 2007 first doubles champion with former USM standout Craig Spann. In two seasons with USM, Warren has compiled a record of 19-8 (.703 winning percentage) in singles action. The Huskies finished their 2008 season with record of 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the Little East Conference. Winning the 2007 Little East Conference tournament, USM finished just two points behind conference champion Bridgewater State in 2008. Southern Maine opens its season against non-conference foe Gordon College today at 4 p.m. USM then travels to Bates (March 20, 4:00 p.m.) before hosting a pair of home matches against Wheelock (March 25, 6:00 p.m.) and Endicott (March 30, 4:00 p.m.). USM begins its conference schedule in April. In four consecutive conference matches, USM is at UMass Dartmouth (April 4, 1:00 p.m.), at home against UMass Boston (April 7, 4:00 p.m.), on the road at Rhode Island College (April 11, 1:00 p.m.) and at home against Salem State (April 14, 4:00 p.m.). USM travels to Thomas (April 16, 3:30 p.m.) before returning to its LEC schedule at Western Connecticut (April 18, 12:00 p.m.) and hosting Bridgewater State (April 21, 4:00 p.m.). The Huskies close out their regular season with a match against Bowdoin College (April 28, 3:30 p.m.). The Little East Conference tournament begins on Tuesday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. at the higher seed. Jon Parry Named Head Coach of USM Men’s Tennis
GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics recently announced the hiring of Jon Parry as head coach for men’s tennis. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the announcement. Parry succeeds former USM men’s tennis coach Phil Cole. Parry joins the USM staff after serving as Assistant Head Coach of the Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team at Greely High School in 2008. In his role as Assistant Head Coach, Parry assisted in the day-to-day development of players and organized and supervised practices and matches for 20-30 student-athletes. Currently a United State Tennis Association (USTA) League Captain and player, Parry is actively involved in the recruiting in the USTA and the Maine Tennis Association (MTA). As an USTA League Captain since 2002, Parry has been responsible for organizing and recruiting 12-16 players for regional competition. Competing in the USTA District Championships in 2007 and 2008, Parry’s team advanced to the final round in 2008. In 2008, Parry was named the Maine State Association Volunteer of the Year by the USTA and the MTA. Parry has competed in 11 USTA tournaments and over 15 MTA tournaments since 2007. A four-year member of the Plymouth North High School varsity tennis team, Parry served in the United States Navy from 1995-1999 before being honorably discharged. WATERVILLE, Maine -- Tommy Kimball (Washington, Conn.) won at first singles and the doubles team of Bryan Brown (Bangor, Maine) and Alex Chin (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) earned a victory as the Colby College men's tennis team took an 8-1 victory over University of Southern Maine on Friday. Kimball, a first-year player, took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine). Meanwhile, Brown and Chin closed out an 8-1 victory over Warren and Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) at first doubles. Stevenson was the only winner for Southern Maine with a win at second singles.
