Joy, Tarbox Set School Records at N.E. Track Championships

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore pole vaulter Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) and
freshman sprinter Charlie Tarbox (Sanford, Maine) of the University of Southern
Maine men's indoor track team set school records last weekend while
participating in the 32nd Annual New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track and
Field Championships held at Boston University.
Joy broke his own record in the pole vault, soaring over the bar at 14-9
to place sixth in the event. He became the first USM athlete to score a point
in the prestigious meet. Joy will have one more shot at clearing the NCAA
Division III national championship qualifying standard when he travels to the
ECAC Division III Championships at Wheaton College (Norton, Mass.) this coming
weekend. NCAA provisional qualifying height in the pole vault is 15-2, and the
automatic qualifying standard is 15-8.25.
Tarbox shaved .59 seconds off his previous record in the 400 meter dash
with a time of 50.29 seconds in his trials heat. The first-year sprint
sensation has set records this winter in the 55, 200 and 400-meter dashes. He
is just six tenths of second off a provisional national qualifying time (49.64)
and will also compete this weekend at the ECAC meet.

USM Huskies Set Four Records

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track
team set four school records Saturday afternoon at the indoor season's first
Quad Cup meet hosted by Bates College. Freshman sprinter Charlie Tarbox
(Sanford, Maine) broke two sprint records while senior jumper Kevin Faria
(Litchfield, N.H.) and sophomore pole vaulter Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) each
extended records they already held.
Tarbox broke Faria's 10-month old record in the 55-meter dash by one tenth
of a second with his 6.60 second time. That time qualifies him for the New
England Division III Championships, the ECAC Division III Championships and the
New England Open Championships.
He came back later in the meet and broke Greg Hobbs two-year old mark in
the 200 meters with a time of 23.25. In his first two collegiate meets, Tarbox
has set school records in the 55, 200 and 400-meter dashes.
Faria extended his long jump record by 1.5 inches with his winning leap of
21-4. Joy raised his record in the pole vault by three inches clearing 13-9 to
win that event. Both are now qualified for the New England Division III and
ECAC meets.
The Huskies finished fourth in the team standings. Massachusetts
Institute of Technology was the top scoring team with 190.5 points followed by
the University of Massachusetts Lowell with 179 points, Bates with 169.5 points
and USM with 60 points.

USM Men's Indoor Track Captains Announced

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Kevin Faria (Litchfield, N.H./Alvirne HS) and
juniors Peter Corbett (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and Derek
Veilleux (Fairfield, Maine/ Lawrence HS) have been named captains for the 1999-
2000 University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track team. Third-year
head coach Mike Towle made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Faria is a two-time Division III All-New England competitor in the 55
meter dash and a former state champion (1998) in the long jump. He holds the
indoor records in both events, and is a member of the record 4 x 400-meter
relay. Faria was the Huskies' top scorer with nine points (a first, second and
third place finishes) in the season-opening meet against Bates on December 4.
Corbett is a second-year member of the men's indoor team. He previously
held the record in the 55-meter hurdles until it was broken earlier this season
by teammate Ben Davis. Corbett, who won his first collegiate race (600 meters)
in the Huskies' season-opening meet, is also a member of the record 4 x 400
meter relay team.
Veilleux is the team's top distance runner and was a tri-captain of the
cross country team this fall. He was third in the 5,000 meters at the state
championships last winter and qualified for the New England Division III and
ECAC Division III championships. A two-time all-state cross country runner,
Veilleux is a member of the Huskies' record 4 x 800-meter and distance medley
relay teams.
The men's indoor track team is off for exams and the holiday break. They
return to action January 15 at the first Quad Cup series meet which will be held
at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
