Joy Soars 15-3 in Pole Vault to Provisionally Qualify for NCAA Meet
STORRS, Conn. -- Sophomore Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team became the first
athlete in the history of the program to score in the New England Open Outdoor
Track and Field Championships when he soared 15-3 in the pole vault to place
fifth in the event. The championships were held Saturday at the University of
Connecticut.
For the third straight week, Joy set the school record in the event. He
broke his old mark, set last weekend (May 6) at the New England Division III
Championships, by six inches. It is the first time he has gone over 15 feet in
competition.
The height also is good enough to provisionally qualify him for the
upcoming NCAA Division III national championships. He will have one more meet
to try and better his provisional mark or meet the automatic qualifying standard
of 15-8 1/4.
Freshman Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) also set a school record for the
second straight week in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Whitney carved nearly ten
seconds off the previous mark with his time of 10:03.95.
Southern Maine, with four points, finished in a three-way tie for 26th
place on the team scoring list. The meet was won by the host UConn Huskies with
143 points, followed by Northeastern University and the University of
Massachusetts Amherst.

Joy Wins New England Division III Pole Vault
Von Oesen, Two Relays Sets School Records
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team won the
pole vault at the New England Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field
Championships being held at Springfield (Mass.) College Saturday afternoon.
Joy, who cleared a school record height of 14-9 to win the event, is the
first USM men's track athlete to win a New England Division III title. He broke
his old mark, set last weekend at the Little East Conference meet, by two-and-a-
half inches. He made three attempts at the NCAA provisional qualifying height
of 15-2 1/4, but failed to clear the bar.
Also at the meet, senior Jamie Von Oesen (Troy, Maine) set a school record
in the shot put with a heave of 46-11 3/4 to place eighth. Von Oesen broke the
old mark of 46-7 set by Ben Willoughby at the State meet in May 1997.
For the second straight week, the 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of junior
Peter Corbett (South Portland, Maine), sophomore Ben Davis (Las Cruces, N.M.),
freshman Greg Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine) and freshman Charlie Tarbox (Sanford,
Maine) knocked four seconds off the school record with their time of 3:31.68.
The 4 x 100-meter relay combination of Corbett, senior Kevin Faria
(Litchfield, N.H.), junior Jarrod Canane (Methuen, Mass.) and Tarbox took nearly
half a second off the old record with their time of 43.95 seconds.
Southern Maine placed 17th in the team standings with 11 points.
Springfield College, with 123 points, won the meet followed by Williams College
96 points, Bates College with 83 points, M.I.T. with 70 points and Bowdoin
College with 58 points.

Faria to Attend NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior men's soccer and
track standout Kevin Faria (Litchfield, N.H.) was among the 353 student-athletes
that have been selected to participate in the fourth annual NCAA Foundation
Leadership Conference.
Faria was selected from among a total of 885 nominees from NCAA member
institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. He will attend
the conference that is being held May 28-June 1, 2000, at Disney's Wide World of
Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The conference will focus on topics identified during the nomination
process as well as topics recommended by members of the Division I, II and III
Student-Athlete Advisory Committees. Topics for past conferences have included
developing leadership skills, changing perception, developing political skills
and utilizing the student-athlete committee.
The mission of the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference is to provide a
diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively
participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable
them to become better leaders in their campuses and in their communities.
A sprinter and long jumper, Faria is a tri-captain for the indoor and
outdoor track teams this year. He played soccer this past season for the first
time since high school, earning a starting spot in the lineup at defender. Faria
played two seasons of baseball and was a member of the Huskies' 1997 NCAA
Division III national championship team before switching his concentration to
the indoor and outdoor track programs in 1998.

Huskies Set Five School Records at Alliance Championships
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's
outdoor track and field team set five school records Saturday afternoon on the
way to a solid fourth place finish in the 2000 New England Alliance Men's
Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Fitchburg State College.
The meet features the schools from the Little East Conference and the
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. Each conference also scored an
individual conference championship from the meet that will be announced Sunday
(April 30).
Southern Maine scored 63 points to finish behind champion Westfield State
College which scored 152.75 points, runner-up Keene State College which had 105
points, and Bridgewater State College with 89.75 points.
The Huskies had only one individual event winner as sophomore Nick Joy
(Alfred, Maine) successfully defended his pole vault title with a record vault
of 14-6 1/2.
Freshman sprinter Charlie Tarbox (Sanford, Maine) had an outstanding day
setting school marks in the 200 and 400-meter dashes and anchoring the record
setting 4 x 400-meter relay. He finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.57
seconds to shave .29 seconds off his own record. He smashed the old 400 meter
mark of 52.18 seconds set by Greg Hobbs in 1998 with a time of 49.86 seconds to
finish second.
Freshman Mark Joyce (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) extended his hammer throw
record by more than five feet throwing 138-7 to place third.
The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of junior Peter Corbett (South Portland,
Maine), sophomore Ben Davis (Las Cruces, N.M.), freshman Greg Dolbec (Shapleigh,
Maine) and Tarbox took more than four seconds off the old record with their time
of 3:35.25 to finish fourth.
USM returns to action next weekend (May 6) traveling to Springfield,
Mass., for the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Huskies Set Three Records, Tie a Fourth
WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's
outdoor track team set three school records and tied a fourth Saturday on the
way to a third place finish at the Colby Invitational Track meet.
Colby College won the meet scoring 167 points. Bates College tallied 119
points and the Huskies had 59 points.
For the second straight week, the 4 x 100-meter relay combination of
junior Peter Corbett (South Portland, Maine), senior Kevin Faria (Litchfield,
N.H.), junior Jarrod Canane (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Charlie Tarbox
(Sanford, Maine) set a school record with their time of 44.42 seconds. That
time shaved 0.33 seconds off last week's time.
Senior Kevin Faria (Litchfield, N.H.) extended his school long jump record
by 1.25 inches to 20-11.
Freshman Mark Joyce (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) set a new mark in the hammer
throw with a heave of 133-2.50
Sophomore pole vaulter Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) won his specialty for the
second straight week and equaled his own record clearing 14-6.
The Huskies participate in the State Championship Meet next Saturday
(April 22) at Colby College.

Huskies Set Six School Records
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Freshman sprinter Charlie Tarbox (Sanford, Maine) of
the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track team set two individual
records and anchored a pair of record-setting relay teams among the six school
records set by the Huskies on Saturday (April 8) at the Bowdoin Invitational
track meet.
Tarbox set individual marks in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. He ran the
100 meters in a blistering time of 11.02 seconds to win the event by nearly
three tenths of a second, and broke the old record of 11.31 seconds set in 1999
by Kevin Faria. Tarbox also won the 200 meter event with a time of 22.86
seconds to break his own school record set one week earlier at Tufts.
The 4 x 100-meter relay combination of junior Peter Corbett (South
Portland, Maine), senior Kevin Faria (Litchfield, N.H.), junior Jarrod Canane
(Methuen, Mass.) and Tarbox took more than a second off the old school record
with their time of 44.75 seconds.
The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet Corbett, Canane, freshman Greg Dolbec
(Shapleigh, Maine) and Tarbox shaved nearly a full second off the old 4 x 400-
meter relay record.
Sophomore pole vaulter Nick Joy (Alfred, Maine) won his specialty and
broke his own record clearing 14-6.
Freshman Sean Diette (Newport, Vt.) took half a second off the school
record in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 18.82.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) edged out Bowdoin College,
249.5-229.5, for team honors. Colby College was third with 138 points followed
by USM with 52 points.
Southern Maine's next meet will be the Colby College Invitational this
Saturday (April 15). The co-ed meet begins at 11:00 a.m.
