Southern Maine Bows Out of LEC Tournament Huskies Fall to RIC 6-2 and Keene State 5-0
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team dropped both of their games in the first day of the 2009 Little East Conference Softball Championship Thursday at the Danya A. Bazar Softball Complex at Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island. Southern Maine fell to top-seeded Rhode Island College 6-2 and then dropped a 5-0 decision to second-seeded Keene State in the elimination game. The pair of losses concluded the University of Southern Maine season. Rhode Island College improves to 37-4 and advances to play third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors on Friday (10 a.m.). The Owls up their record to 23-13 and will face fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials on Friday (2 p.m.) Keene State freshman P Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) limited the Huskies to a pair of singles over seven innings to lead the Owls to a 2-0 shut out victory. Savoie fanned 10 batters and gave up just one walk in a solid performance in the circle. The Owls senior 3B Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendahoa) drove in a pair of runs with a double in the fourth inning and a fielder’s choice grounder in the fifth. Senior OF Allie D’Amato (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) was the lone repeat hitter for the Owls finishing the game with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with an RBI triple. In the first game, top-seeded Rhode Island College struck for 10 hits to down the Huskies 6-2. Sophomore SS Donielle Mattoon (Conventry, Rhode Island) drove in two of the Anchorwomen’s runs on two hits, while sophomore 1B Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) blasted a solo home run in bottom of the second to score RIC’s first run of the game. Southern Maine freshman C Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) drove in both of the Huskies runs against RIC with a two-run double to center field in the fourth inning. RIC junior P Jenna Deveines (Lowville, N.Y./Beaver River Central) remained undefeated to earn the win. Deveines allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in four innings of work. Deveines struck out five batters and did not yield a walk. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies allowing four runs (three earned) in three innings. Perdomo gave up six hits and did not allow a walk. Bates College Takes Two From Southern Maine 7-6 and 9-2
GORHAM, Maine – Senior DH Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) combined for six hits, five runs and two runs scored to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a pair of wins over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. The Bobcats edged USM 7-6 in the opener and pounded out 17 hits for a 9-2 win in the second game. With the pair of wins Bates College improves to 11-13 overall. The loss concludes the Huskies’ regular season with a record of 6-24. Holding on to a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bates sophomore P Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass./Dover-Sherbon) entered the game in relief of freshman starter Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) and earned the save. Cullen faced four batters in the bottom of the seventh, striking out one and allowing one hit. Saniuk led a 16-hit attack for the Bobcats, finishing the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI. Freshman C Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass./Bishop Guertin) and freshman 3B Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H./Brooks School) each had a pair of RBI for Bates. Maciejewski drove in both of her runs in the top of the fifth inning when the Bobcats rallied back from a 4-2 deficit to take the lead. Maciejewski’s two-run double to left center field tied the score while Berube drove in the go- ahead run with single. Bates’ Finn earned the win in the circle allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits. Finn struck out one batter and did not allow a walk. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss allowing seven runs (two earned) on 13 hits in 5.2 innings. In the second game, Saniuk, Maciejewski and junior 2B Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) each connected on three hits as the Bobcats tagged the USM pitching staff for 17 hits and nine runs. Saniuk and Maciejewski each belted out a pair of doubles, while Saniuk had three RBI. USM sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) had three of the Huskies’ eight hits in the game with a double and two singles, while freshman OF Lauren DiCecco (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) had a pair of singles. Cullen earned the win for the Bobcats allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings. USM sophomore P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) allowed six runs (five earned) in the loss. Deroche yielded nine hits and four walks in 3.1 innings pitched. Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (10 a.m.) at the 2009 Little East Conference Championship at the Danya A. Bazar Softball Complex on the campus of Rhode Island College in Providence Rhode Island. The Huskies are seeded sixth in the tournament and will face top-seeded Rhode Island College in their opening game of the tournament. Keene State Downs Southern Maine in Doubleheader
GORHAM, Maine – Senior INF Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendahoe) drove in five runs, including four on a grand slam home run, to lead the Keene State College Owls to a 16-1 five-inning win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first game of Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. The Owls defeated Southern Maine 4- 1 in the second game to earn the sweep. With the pair of wins the Owls secured their sixth straight victory to improve to 19-11-1 and 8-3-1 Little East. Southern Maine falls to 6-32 and 4-10 in conference. The Owls quickly jumped on top, plating four runs in the first inning. Keene State scored all four of its runs with two outs taking advantage of two hits, two hit batters, a USM error and a wild pitch. Keene State freshman 1B Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) recorded an RBI with a single up the middle. Chandler and Allenson each were responsible for one of two Keene State runs in the second inning. Chandler led off the inning with a triple and crossed home plate on throwing error before Allenson notched her first RBI of the game with a double down the left field line for a 6-0 Owl lead after two innings. Keene State took an 8-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI double from senior OF Jenna Patnode (Surry, N.H./Monadnock Regional) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore OF Ashley Annis (Gilford, N.H.). Southern Maine broke up the shut out in the bottom of the third with a RBI sacrifice fly to left field from senior 1B Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle). Keene State roared back in the top of the fourth to close out the game scoring eight runs on five hits and three USM errors. Allenson was responsible for four of the Owls’ eight runs in the inning with her third hit of the game, a deep home run over the center field fence. Junior C Stephanie Lavado (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) drove in two Owl runs with a double to left field earlier in the inning. Freshman P Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn.) earned the win for the Owls pitching a one-hitter over five innings without a walk. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss allowing 11 runs (seven earned) in 3.0 innings. Perdomo yielded 10 hits and two walks. In the second game, Keene State scored one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to break open a 1-1 tie and earn the win. The Owls struck first in the top of the fourth with an RBI sacrifice fly by Chandler, but the Huskies plated a run of their own in the home half of the inning with an RBI single by freshman 3B Nani Jacobs (Kahnawake, Quebec/Vermont Academy). The Owls slowly took control of the game with a run in their final three at-bats on the heels of a RBI triple from Patnode, a sacrifice fly by sophomore SS Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) and a RBI single up the middle from Annis, while freshman P Samantha Pratt (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) held the Huskies scoreless. Pratt was outstanding in the circle for the Owls allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk in 6.1 innings. Freshman P Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) earned the save relieving Pratt with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Savoie retired the final two USM batters on strikeouts. Bridgewater State Sweeps Southern Maine 16-5 and 9-0
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior 3B Stacy Capodiece (East Lyme, Conn.) connected on a pair of home runs and drove in six runs over two games to lead the Bridgewater State College Bears to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater, Mass. The Bears earned a pair of five-inning wins over the Huskies defeating USM 16-5 in the opener and earning a 9-0 shutout in the second game. With their fourth straight victory, Bridgewater State improves to 23-9. The two losses drops Southern Maine’s record to 6-30 overall. Capodeice drove in four runs in the second game, plating a pair of run in the bottom of the second inning with a double to left center field as the Bears led 3-0 after two. Capodeice stroked her second home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third as part of a game-clinching six-run bottom of the third. Capodeice’s home run down the left field line scored the Bears’ first two runs of the inning. Capodeice’s two hits and four RBI in the second game was part of a 13-hit attack for the Bears as Bridgewater State tagged the USM pitching staff for three home runs in the second game. The Bears also received an outstanding pitching effort from senior Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford). Verronneau earned the shut out victory giving up just two hits while striking out seven batters. In the first game, the Bears pounded out 16 hits, including four home runs, and scored five runs each in the bottom of the first and second inning to cruise to the victory. Eight different players had at least one RBI for the Bears in the game, led by four from sophomore 1B Penny King (Hanover, Mass.) and three from senior SS Rachel Sprague (Duxbury, Mass.). Trailing 14-0 through three innings, Southern Maine was able to break up the shut out. The Huskies scored two runs in top of the fourth on a RBI single from freshman 3B < (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and a run-scoring fielder’s choice by sophomore SS < (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence). The Huskies added three more runs in the top of the fifth on a RBI double from freshman C < (Madison, Maine) and a two-run home run from freshman OF < (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood). Senior P Stephanie Pierce (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) earned the win in the circle for the Bears allowing five earned runs on eight hits and a walk. Southern Maine Splits With Plymouth State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore SS Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) connected on a solo home run in the top of the second inning to help propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at D & M Park in Plymouth, N.H. The win gave the Huskies a split with the Panthers as USM narrowly dropped the first game 2- 1. With the win in the second game of the series, Southern Maine halts a five-game losing streak and improves to 6-28 overall and 4-8 in the Little East Conference. Plymouth State stands at 17-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Gilman smacked her first collegiate home run to put the Huskies ahead for good 2-1. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman 2B Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) tripled down the right field line and then crossed the plate for a run on a wild pitch; however the Panthers answered back with a run in the home half of the inning to tie the score. Panther sophomore DH Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) drove in a run with a single to left field to plate PSU’s lone run of the game. After Gilman’s home run, the Huskies relied on a solid pitching effort from sophomore Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering). Deroche scattered seven hits and four walks over seven innings allowing one earned run. Plymouth State junior P Jenna George (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) pitched well in the loss allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. In the first game, the Panthers used a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the second from sophomore OF Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) to take the 2-1 win over USM. The home run was Pydynkowski’s sixth of the season. The Panther’s also receive a solid pitching effort from senior P Courntey MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy). MacFarland, who struck out three, held the Huskies to a single run yielding six hits and one walk in seven innings. The Huskies pulled to within a run of the Panthers on a RBI single from Deroche in the top of the fifth. Deroche drove in freshman 1B Nani Jacobs (Kahnawake, Quebec), who led off the inning with a double to right field. However, MacFarland and the Panther’s were able to keep the Huskies off of the board over the final two innings for the win. Southern Maine remains on the road Thursday (3:30 p.m.) for a non- conference doubleheader with Bridgewater State. Eastern Connecticut Takes Two From USM 2-0 and 9-0 (5 inn.)
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior OF Ashley Sullivan (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in two runs on a sacrifice fly and a single to left field to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the opening game of a Little East Conference doubleheader as the Warriors swept the Huskies. Eastern Connecticut downed Southern Maine 9-0 in five innings in the second game to earn the sweep. With the sweep Eastern Connecticut improves to 20-6 overall and 7-1 in the Little East Conference. Suffering its fourth consecutive defeat, Southern Maine falls to 5-27 and 3-7 in conference action. Sullivan broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Sullivan then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, lacing a run-scoring single to left field. Warrior freshman P Molly Rathbun (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) improved to 14-2 on the season firing a seven-inning shutout. Rathbun allowed just two USM hits over seven innings with out a walk while racking up 15 strikeouts. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies. Perdomo had a solid day in the circle for the Huskies allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, while striking out five. In the second game, Eastern Connecticut pounded out nine hits to earn a 9-0 five inning win. The Warriors plated to runs each in the first, second and third inning and added three more in the bottom of the fourth the victory. Junior IF Kim Church (Farmington, Conn.) drove in three runs to pace the Warriors. Freshman OF Priscilla Alicea (Trumball, Conn.) and junior OF Ashley Sullivan (Trumball, Conn.) each drove in a pair of runs. Sullivan finished the game with a triple and a double in a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior P Kaite Pensiero (Stamford, Conn.) earned the win for Eastern Connecticut limiting the Huskies to just three hits and two walks. Pensiero improved to 5-2 and struck out seven batters with the win. USM sophomore P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) allowed nine runs on nine hits and three walks in the loss. Bowdoin Trumps Huskies 12-1 (5 innings) and 5-3
GORHAM, Maine – The Bowdoin College Polar Bears pounded out 19 hits, including nine for extra bases, to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies 12-1 (5 innings) and 5-3 in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday evening at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. With the two wins, Bowdoin improves to 19-12-1 overall, while the Huskies fall to 5-25. Senior P Karen Reni (Ashland, Mass.) scattered five hits over five innings in the first game in a solid effort in the circle to lead the Polar Bears in the first game. Reni was bolstered by two RBI a piece from freshman 3B Courtney Colantuno (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), senior C Alison Coleman (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman SS Amy Hackett (Bangor, Maine). Colantuno provided Bowdoin with power at the plate finishing the opening game with a 3-for-4 effort with a pair of doubles and three runs scored to compliment her two RBI, while Hackett gave the Polar Bears an early 2-0 lead with a two-run single to right center field in the top of the first. Reni was solid in the circle for the Polar Bears, allowing just one earned run in the bottom of the fifth. Reni struck out two batters and yielded just one walk and did not allow the Huskies to string together more than one hit until the fifth inning. USM sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) doubled in the Huskies’ lone run of the game with a shot to center field to score freshman OF Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine/Cony) who reached base safely with a two-out single in the fifth. Southern Maine freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings of work. Perdomo allowed six hits before being lifted for freshman P Nani Jacobs (Kanhawake, Quebec). Jacobs finished the game for the Huskies allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. In the second game the Huskies struck first jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. With two outs USM senior 1B Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) connected on a double to left field. Dixon scored when freshman C Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) stroked a double to left field and the Huskies went ahead 2-0 on a stolen base by Hayden and an unearned run on an errant throw. Bowdoin quickly regrouped and took the lead for good plating four runs in the top of the second. The Polar Bears took advantage of four hits and two USM errors in the inning. Hackett, junior IF Molly Nestor (Duxbury, Mass./Notre Dame) and sophomore IF Lauren Coven (Ridgewood, N.J.) each had a RBI in the inning. USM pulled to within one run of Bowdoin in the bottom of the third on a RBI double down the left field line from Dixon, but the Polar Bear pitching staff shut the door on the Huskies the rest of the way. Bowdoin added an insurance run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by freshman OF Hillary Smyth (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline). Reni started the game for the Polar Bears firing three innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. Colantuno replaced Reni and earned the win pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Freshman P Michelle Wells (Winterport, Maine/Hampden Academy) earned the save replacing Colantuno in the seventh. Huskies Split With UMass Boston
BOSTON – Freshman C Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a two-run home run to drive in four RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 10-1 win over the UMass Boston Beacons in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader as the Huskies split the series with the Beacons Tuesday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. Southern Maine fell in nine innings to the Beacon in the first game 3-1. With the split USM improves to 5-23 overall and 3-5 in the Little East Conference. UMass Boston stands at 9-15 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Hayden singles in the Huskies first run of the game with a run-scoring single to right field to drive in senior 1B Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) who reached safely on a walk. Hayden helped the Huskies to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third connecting on her first collegiate home run. Dixon drove in USM’s first run of the inning with an RBI single to left field to score freshman 2B Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Dixon came around to score after Hayden launched a shot over the left field fence. The Huskies added a single run in the top of the fourth and the fifth. After a scoreless sixth, USM plated four more runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and four walks. In the first game, the Beacons rallied from a narrow 1-0 deficit on the merits of Haroules bat to earn the 3-1 extra inning win. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Haroules drove in the game-tying run with a double down the left field line and then smacked a two-run walk off home run in the ninth inning to deliver the game to the Beacons. The Huskies had led UMass Boston 1-0 after the top of the fifth on an RBI single from sophomore SS Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence). Southern Maine Sweeps UMass Dartmouth 8-7 (12 inn) and 10-0 (5 inn.)
GORHAM, Maine – Freshman OF Lauren DiCecco (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) singled in the game winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 8-7 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in the opening game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. DiCecco’s game-winning single set the table for the Huskies first sweep of the season as USM uncorked for 10 runs in the second game for a 10-0 five inning win. Halting a seven game losing streak, Southern Maine improves to 4-22 overall and earns its first two conference wins of the season to improve to 2-4 in the conference. Conversely, the Corsairs saw their four-game winning streak come to a close falling to 7-11 overall and 4-2 in the LEC. Trailing 6-1 through four and a half innings, Southern Maine rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth and scored the equalizer in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. In the fifth, USM senior 1B Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) drove in three of the Huskies four runs with the first of her two triple in the game. Dixon came around to score the Huskies’ fourth run of the inning on an RBI ground out from DiCecco. Dixon continued to hit for power in the bottom of the seventh launching a triple to the right field fence for the equalizer. Dixon drove in sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) who led off the inning with a triple to left field. After the seventh, both teams were held scoreless over the next three innings. Heading into the 11th runners for each team were placed on second as per the NCAA tie-breaking procedure. The Corsairs took a 7-6 lead, junior OF Katy Williams (Charlemont, MA/Mohawk Trail) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then crossed home plate safely on an RBI single fro sophomore OF Michelle Conway (Burrillville, Rhode Island). The Huskies answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Cusack drove in freshman SS Heidi Swett (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) on a single through the left side. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) was able to get out of the top of the 12th inning unscathed, retiring three batters consecutively, to set up DiCecco’s heroics. Perdomo, who struck out four, went the distance for USM in the circle allowing five earned runs in 12 innings on 14 hits and two walks. UMass Dartmouth freshman P Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) was the hard-luck loser for the Corsairs allowing five earned runs on 13 hits. Eldridge fanned 12 batters in the loss and gave up just two walks in 11.1 innings of action. In the second game, the Huskies used an eight run third inning to put away the Corsairs. Leading 2-0 after an RBI single from DiCecco in the first inning, the Huskies used seven hits and one UMass Dartmouth error to plate eight runs in the bottom of the third. Dixon, who led off the inning with a single, connected on the Huskies’ final hit of the inning blasting a two-run homerun over the left field fence for her first home run of the season. The Huskies scored four of their eight runs on two outs in the inning. Southern Maine sophomore P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) was solid in the win for the Huskies allowing just one hit in five innings with a pair of walks, while striking out five. Western Connecticut Takes Doubleheader From USM 6-3 and 6-2
GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore 2B Amy Hartman (Ellington, Conn.) blasted a three-run home run as part of a five-run fifth inning to break open a close game and help the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. Hartman’s three-run shot over the left field fence helped the Colonials to a 6-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader. Western Connecticut defeated USM 6-3 in the opener. With the pair of wins, Western Connecticut improves to 12-8 overall and 2-0 in the Little East. Suffering their sixth straight loss, the Huskies fall to 2- 22 and remain winless in the conference at 0-4. Holding a slim 1-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth after pushing a run across the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth, the Colonials exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to snare the win. Highlighted by Hartman’s home run, the Colonials came alive for four of their eight hits in the inning and scored all five of their runs on two outs. Sophomore C Meghan Mammone (Stamford, Conn.) drove in Western Connecticut’s first two runs of the inning with a line shot up the middle for a single. Freshman P Meg Dargon (Trumbull, Conn.) earned the win in the circle, holding USM scoreless through five innings before allowing a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Dargon completed six innings allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven batters. In the opener, Western Connecticut relief pitcher sophomore Brittany Connors (Waterford, Conn.) was able to force an infield fly to thwart a USM comeback bid and earn the save for the Colonials in a 6-3 win. Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, USM rallied for two runs and were threatening for a more before Connors retired the final two USM batters. However, with one out and a runner in scoring position, Connors was able to battle back for the final two outs with a grounder to second base and a pop fly to second base to end the inning. Salem State Sweeps Southern Maine 12-2 and 7-3
GORHAM, Maine – Junior C Amanda Scola (Leominster, Mass.) and freshman 2B Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, Mass.) combined for 10 hits, five RBI and seven runs scored to lead the Salem State College Vikings to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. The Vikings defeated USM in six innings 12-2 in the first game and then rallied from a two run deficit in the second game to down the Huskies 7-3. With the pair of wins, Salem State improves to 12-8 overall. The Vikings have won four of their last five games. The pair of losses drops Southern Maine to 2-20 overall. Over two games the Salem State bats pelted the USM pitching staff for 26 hits. Trailing 2-1 through three innings of the opener, the Vikings scored the final 11 runs of the game to take the 12-2 six-inning victory. The game was shortened due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Grifoni was 3-for-4 in the first game with three runs scored and one RBI. Junior SS Katie Oram (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) drove in three runs for the Vikings on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a two-run single in the Vikings six-run fifth inning. Senior P Katelyn Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) earned the win in the circle for Salem State, allowing just one earned run over six innings while giving up six hits. USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss allowing five earned runs in six innings. Perdomo yielded 14 hits and one walk. In the second game, Scola drove in three of the Vikings’ seven runs on a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a pair of doubles and singles. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Salem State freshman P Katelynn Fanning (East Boston, Mass./St. Mary’s) settled in and limited USM to just one more run to earn the win. Fanning scattered four hits in seven innings allowing two earned runs. Fanning struck out 10 and gave up just two walks. USM’s sophomore P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) gave up five earned runs on 12 hits and two walks in the loss. Trailing 2-1, Salem State took the lead for good in the top of the second plating a pair of runs as Scola cranked out the second of her two doubles in the game to score senior OF Emily Corey (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) and Oram. Corey led off the inning with a double, while Oram drew a walk. Salem State added two more in the top of the fifth. Junior OF Jess Baird (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI ground out to second base, while Aldred knocked in a run on a triple to right field. The Huskies took a run back in the home half of the fifth inning on a RBI ground out by freshman OF Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine/Cony). St. Joseph’s College Takes Two From Southern Maine
STANDISH, Maine – Freshman C Maria Labbe (Lewiston, Maine) singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the St. Joseph’s College Monks to a 5-4 win in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader as the Monks were able to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening at Ward Field in Standish, Maine. The Monks defeated USM 6-1 in the second game. Earning its 10th victory with the sweep, St. Joseph’s College improves to 16-6 overall. The losses drop Southern Maine to 2-18. Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Monks were able to plate a pair of run to earn the win. With a runner placed on second as per the NCAA softball tie-breaker rule, junior 2B Jillian Kimball drove in the Monks first run with a run-scoring ground out, before Labbe stroked a single to right field for her third hit of the game to deliver the win. The Huskies had rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the top of the fifth to knot the score up at three runs. USM freshman OF Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine/Cony) earned the RBI by drawing a bases loaded walk. After two scoreless innings, the Huskies went ahead of the Monks 4-3 in the top of the eighth when freshman DH Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) connected on an RBI single. St. Joseph’s College freshman P Madylan Kluna (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned the win in eight innings. Kluna did not give up an earned run in the game, yielding six hits and three walks while striking out five. Southern Maine Splits With Colby
WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore OF Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine/Cony) had two doubles and a pair of RBI to lead the Univerity of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Colby College Mules in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Crafts Field in Waterville, Maine. The Huskies rallied back from an 11-0 five-inning loss to the Mules to earn the split and their second win of the season to improve to 2-16 overall. Colby stands at 11-3. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) earned her first win of the season scattering five hits over seven innings while striking out three batters in the second game. Trailing 1-0 through three innings, Southern Maine freshman C Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) singled in the Huskies first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Hayden drove in Hopkins who reached base safely with a one-out double. After scoring the equalizer, Deroche was able to keep the Mule bats at bay and did not allow a run, retiring a string of seven straight batters. The Huskies plated a pair of insurance in the top of the seventh to close out the game. Hopkins drove in both of USM’s runs in the inning connecting on her second double of the game. In the first game Colby’s senior 3B Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) hit a solo home run and a two-run double while sophomore OF Barbara Santo (Topsfield, Mass.) had a two-run homer, a double and scored three runs to lead the Mules to the 11-0 win. UNE Sweeps Southern Maine 9-4 and 11-2
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England Nor’easters rode solid pitching efforts and pounded out 21 hits over two games to earn a double header sweep over the University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team Thursday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field in Biddeford, Maine. The Nor’easters took the first game 9-4 and then cruised to an 11-2 win in five innings. With the pair of wins the Nor’easters improve to 12-3-1 overall. UNE has won six out of its last eight games. Suffering its ninth straight loss Southern Maine falls to 1-15. The games were originally scheduled to be played at the Huskies’ Towers Fields; however the site was changed to UNE’s home field as USM’s were deemed unplayable. UNE scored the first six runs of the opening game plating three each in the first and the third. In the first inning, seniors OF Megan Gaedje (Tolland, Conn.) and 1B Ashley DePasquale (Uxbridge, Mass.) each drove in run. Gaedje connected on a triple to right field, while DePasquale knocked in a run with a single to right. In the third inning, junior C Caroline Engwer (Wrentham, Mass.) earned an RBI with an infield single. The Huskies countered in the home half of the third scoring all four of their runs. Southern Maine capitalized on three hits, two walks and one UNE error in the inning. Freshman 3B Laura Leger (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and senior OF Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each drove in runs. After the third inning, UNE held the Huskies scoreless for the remaining four innings as senior P Jess Silvio (Beverly, Mass.) entered the game in relief of starter freshman Katie Knowlen (Winslow, Maine). Silvio limited to USM to just four hits over its final four times at bat to pick up the win. Knowlen fired three innings yielding four earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks. The Nor’easters jumped on top of USM freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) for 10 runs in the first three innings, including a seven run third inning, to clinch the sweep. Mantelli had three RBI on two hits, while Waldecker drove in four runs on a pair of hits. Mantelli spotted UNE a quick two-run lead in the top of the first slamming a two-out two-run home run to left-center field. In the second inning, sophomore DH Stephanie Podolski (Coventry, Conn.) doubled in a run to put UNE ahead 3-0, before the UNE bats came alive four seven runs and five hits in the third. Mantelli singled in the first run of the inning, before Waldecker smacked a grand slam home run to account for the Nor’easters next four runs. UNE’s final two runs of the inning were unearned as the Huskies committed a pair of field errors. UNE Amber Zamblowsky (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) allowed just two hits in three inning of work to earn the win before being lifted in favor of freshman Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt./U-32). Bigelow gave up both of the Huskies runs allowing a single run in the fourth and fifth inning. Bigelow finished the game allowing two earned runs on three hits in two innings. USM freshman OF Lauren DiCecco (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) drove in a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and Leger posted an RBI with a run scoring ground out in the fifth. Perdomo took the loss for USM giving up 12 hits and three walks in five innings. She allowed 11 runs, eight earned, in the loss. Anchorwomen Take Two From Southern Maine
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen pounded out 29 hits over two games to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-2 and 12-4, in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar Field in Providence, Rhode Island. With the sweep, Rhode Island College earns its ninth and 10th consecutive wins to improve to 16-2 overall and 2-0 in the Little East Conference. Losing its seventh straight game, Southern Maine falls to 1-13 and 0-2 in the conference. In the first game, junior OF Michelle Perrin (Saugus, Mass.) connected on four of RIC’s 15 hits and drove in three runs to lead the Anchorwomen to a 9-2 win. In the second game, sophomore C Laura Kostenblatt (Keene, N.H.) drove in four runs on three hits, including the game-clinching RBI, to give RIC a five- inning 12-4 win. The second game was shortened due to the eight-run rule. USM senior utility player Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) spotted the Huskies a 2-0 lead in the first inning connecting on her first home run of the season. Dixon drove in sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) who led off the inning with a double. However, RIC charged back scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning and two runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-2. After allowing two runs in the first half, RIC sophomore P Melanie Neece (Westfield, Mass.) settled in a shut out the Huskies over the next three innings before being lifted in favor of sophomore Amanda Beard (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case). Neece improved to 4-1 yielding four hits without a walk while fanning two batters. Beard picked up her fifth save of the season firing three hitless innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Rhode Island College jumped on top of USM freshman pitcher Nani Jacobs (Kahnawake, Quebec/Vermont Academy) for six runs in the first inning of the second game to roll to a 12-4 win. Jacobs fell to 1-4 with the loss, giving up four earned runs on five hits. Kostenblatt and sophomore OF Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, Conn.) combined for seven RBI and seven hits in the game. RIC junior P Jenna Deveines (Lowville, N.Y./Beaver River Central) remained undefeated in the circle for the Anchorwomen improving to 7-0. Huskies Drop Three Games to Finish Spring Break Trip
CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team closed out its annual Spring Break Trip with a trio of losses Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Huskies fell to Lawrence University 9-3, Elmhurst College 6-0 and to Mount Mercy College 10-2 in five innings. Losing its fifth straight game, Southern Maine returns north with a 1-11 record. Lawrence picked up its first win of the season over USM to improve to 1-4 overall. Elmhurst moved to 9-2 with the win, while Mount Mercy climbed above .500 on the season to stand at 5-4. In the first game, Lawrence sophomore SS Carli Gurholt (Scandinavia, Wis./Amherst) drilled a three-run, two-out home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open a 1-0 game. Gurholt finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and two runs scored. Southern Maine crept to within two runs of Lawrence in the top of the fifth inning plating two runs on a RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore LF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) and a RBI single from freshman 2B Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), but Lawrence roared back for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Elmhurst senior pitcher Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) silenced the USM bats yielding just two hits and one walk, while cutting down four on strikeouts to earn the win. Perdomo allowed six runs in six hits in the loss for USM. Wellesley and Wisconsin Whitewater Down Southern Maine, 11-3 and 13-0
CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team dropped a pair of five-inning games Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. Southern Maine fell to Wellesley College 11-3 and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks 13-0. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. With the pair of losses Southern Maine falls to 1-8 overall. Wellesley improved to 3-2 with the win, while Wisconsin-Whitewater earned its seventh win to increase its record to 7-1 overall. Wellesley junior P Megan Wood (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) was instrumental in the win for the Blue scattering seven hits and limiting the Huskies to three runs in five innings. Wood was red hot at the plate driving in six runs including a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wood, who upped her record to 1-1 in the circle, paced an eight-hit Wellesley attack connecting on a pair of singles and the grand slam. Freshman IF Elora Daniele (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery) drove in two runs for the Blue with a single and a triple. Huskies Earn First Win of the Season, Defeats D’Youville 9-6 Southern Maine Falls to Manchester and University of Chicago
CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman P Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) drove in three runs and earned her first win of the season to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-6 win over the D’Youville College Lady Spartans Sunday afternoon at Legends’ Way Field at the US National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The win was the first of the season for the Huskies. Southern Maine fell to Manchester College 10-6 and the University of Chicago 6-3. After its three games today, Southern Maine is now 1-6 overall. The University of Chicago Maroons earned a season-opening win to stand at 1-0, while the Lady Spartans dropped their second straight of the season at 0-2. Perdomo cranked out her first career homerun in the second inning to spur a three-run USM second inning. Perdomo stroked the ball to deep left field to drive in freshman IF Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) who worked her way to one-out walk to put the Huskies ahead 2-0. USM sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) drove in the Huskies third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring sophomore OF Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine/Cony). Hopkins reached base safely with single. The Lady Spartans rallied to tie the score at 3-3 plating a run in the second inning on a RBI single from junior OF Shannon McDonnell (Blasdell, N.Y./Frontier). D’Youville completed the rally to tie the score with two unearned runs in the third inning. USM regained the lead in the fourth inning. In the first game, Manchester senior 1B Chelsea Kunkel (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) and sophomore OF Annie Hernandez (Crown Point, Ind./Griffith) combined for seven RBI to lead the Spartans to a 10-6 win. Huskies Fall to Babson and Buffalo State
CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Legends’ Way Field at the US National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Southern Maine fell to the Babson College Beavers 6-3 in its first game of the day and then dropped a 7-3 decision to the Buffalo State College Bengals. With the pair of losses Southern Maine remains winless on the season at 0- 4. Babson College improves to 8-5, while the Bengals, playing in their season- opener, begins their season at 1-0. In the first game, the Beavers broke open the game in the bottom of the second inning, plating four runs on three hits, a walk and a USM error to down the Huskies 6-3. Freshman C Nicole Latini (East Bridgewater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) paced the eight-hit Babson attack banging out three hits including a lead-off double to left field in the second and the third innings. Latini scored two of the Beavers’ runs in the game. The Huskies cut the Babson lead in half in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs on two-out single up the middle from freshman 3B Laura Leger (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) . However, the Beavers regained their advantage in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single from junior 2B Brittany Russo (Middletown, Conn.). Russo plated sophomore 1B Jess Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Latin who had each singled to reach base safely. The Huskies took one run back in the top of the sixth on a RBI ground out from freshman 2B Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) but it was as close as they would get as the Beavers closed out the game for the win. Junior P Nicole Liska (Seymour, Conn.) picked up her sixth win of the season for Babson. Liska spread out seven hits over seven innings, allowing just one earned run. Liska struck out eight batters and yielded a single walk. USM sophomore pitcher Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) took the loss for the Huskies allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk. Deroche struck out six. Ahead 2-1 through three innings, the Bengals plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to separate themselves from the Huskies and pulled away for the win. Senior IF Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) connected on three hits and drove in three runs to lead the 11-hit Bengal attack. Senior OF Carly Lopez (Oriskany, N.Y.) added two hits and two RBI. Bengal junior P Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) earned her first season allowing eight hits over seven innings. Frieling struck out seven and gave up just one walk. USM freshman Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss for USM yielding 11 hits. Perdomo fanned three batters and had one walk. Southern Maine will play three games on Sunday. Huskies Fall in Season Opening Games
Farleigh Dickinson Downs USM 6-2; Westfield State Drops Huskies 9-1 CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team opened its 2009 season with a pair of losses during its annual southern trip Friday afternoon at the National Training Complex in Clermont, Florida. Junior C Amy Beideman (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) drove in three runs to help the Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham Devils to a 6-2 win over the Huskies, while sophomore SS Alicia Gardner (Athol, Mass.) and junior OF Danielle Lutenegger (Sunderland, Mass./Frontier Regional) each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Westfield State College Owls to a five-inning 9-1 win. Both the Devils and the Owls were playing in their final games of their spring training trip. The Devils improved to 7-2 with the win and the Owls earned their fourth straight victory to improve to 5-3. Southern Maine opens its 2009 campaign with a 0-2 record. Behind an evenly distributed nine-hit attack, Westfield scored three runs in the first and second inning to take control of the game and cruise to a win. Senior OF Jackie Mason (Florida, Mass./Drury) was the only Westfield player to connect on more than one hit in the game finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple. Mason scored two runs and added an RBI. In the first inning, sophomore IF Kristyn Carroll (Brockton, Mass.) knocked in a run with a two-out single while Lutenegger added a two-run single. Gardner was responsible for all three of the Owls’ runs in the second inning, slamming a two-run triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly from senior 1B Katie Gorman (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam). Senior P Chelsea Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass./New Bedford) earned the win for the Owls in three and a third innings. Sylvia fanned four batters while allowing just three hits. USM freshman Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies allowing five earned runs on eight hits and a walk in two and two-third innings of action. In Southern Maine’s opener, the Devils scored four runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Freshman P Megan Golembiewski (Beacon, N.Y.) and freshman P Tina Banta (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) combined for 10 strikeouts in the Devil victory. Banta, who relieved Golembiewski, struck out four and earned the win for the Devils. Southern Maine pounded out nine hits in the loss, led by doubles from sophomore OF Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore SS Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) and a triple from sophomore OF Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine). USM Softball Team to Host Fundraising Clinics
GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team will host a pair of fundraising clinics on Saturday, March 7 and Saturday, March 14. Each day the USM softball coaching staff and team members will give instruction by presenting offensive clinics, defensive clinics and pitching clinics. The pitching and defense clinics will run on both Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Hitting, bunting and base running clinics will be presented from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. The fee for each session is $25.00. If a player attends both sessions on March 14th the fee is $45.00. The clinics will take place in the University of Southern Maine Field House on the Gorham Campus.
