Emergency Action Plan
Field Hockey and Lacrosse Venue (Paula D. Hodgdon Field)

Emergency Personnel: A certified athletic trainer (ATC) is on-site for practices and competitive events. Athletic Training Student(s) may be present only when supervised by an ATC.

Emergency Communication: Portable two-way radio and stationary emergency telephone on the corner of the parking lot toward the water tower.

Emergency Equipment: First aid supplies (athletic trainers’ kit, body substance isolation (BSI) bag, breathing devices, vacuum splints, spine board, and crutches). Breathing devices, spine board and crutches are kept in the storage shed at the northeast corner of the field when not in use. An AED is stationed in an alarmed cabinet in the lobby of the Costello Sports Complex. It is located at the rear of the lobby near the restrooms and adjacent to the fire extinguisher. Another AED is located over the counter in the lobby of the USM Ice Arena.

Roles of Emergency Care Team Members
  1. Immediate care of the injured/ill student-athlete: Follow appropriate first aid principles (See Injury/Illness Emergency Protocol sheet included with this Emergency Action Plan).
  2. Emergency equipment retrieval: Appropriate to the emergency
  3. Activation of emergency medical system (EMS) by calling University Police dispatch at 911 (or push emergency button on the emergency telephone at the corner of the field) or Channel 2 on the portable two-way radio. Provide them with the following information:
    1. Identify yourself and your role in the emergency
    2. Specify your location and telephone number (if calling by phone)
    3. Give name(s) of injured/ill individual(s)
    4. Condition of victim(s)
    5. Time of the incident
    6. Care being provided
    7. Give specific directions to the scene of the emergency
    Direction of EMS to the scene
    1. Assist University Police with directing EMS to scene
    2. Open appropriate gates
    3. Designate individual to "flag down" EMS and direct to scene
    4. Scene control: keep non-emergency medical team members away from the scene

Venue Directions: Hodgdon Field (field hockey and lacrosse) is located next to Bailey Hall and Woodward Hall off University Way. Approach campus on College Avenue, right onto University Way, left just before Bailey Hall parking lot, up and around Bailey Hall, keeping water tower to the left. Hodgdon Field is on the right past Bailey Hall. Look for athletic personnel to guide you to the emergency scene.

Storm Safety Location: In the event of lightning or severe storm warning, move all individuals to the Main Lobby of Bailey Hall.
