Matt Gerken, Head Athletic TrainerMatt Gerken has served as Head Athletic Trainer for USM Athletics since 1999. Prior to his appointment to USM, Matt was Head Athletic Trainer and Athletic Training Education Program Director at Colby-Sawyer College for nine years. He has been providing health care to student-athletes and clinical supervision and instruction to athletic training students since beginning his career at Bridgewater State College in 1977, again as Head Athletic Trainer.

Matt earned his Master's degree from Indiana University and Bachelor's degree from Plymouth State College. He has served as Vice President and President of the Maine Athletic Trainers' Association and has provided service and leadership to athletic training professional associations at the state and regional levels most of his career.

Jacqueline Clark joined the USM athletic training staff in the summer of 2009. She earned her BS in Athletic Training in 2007 from Springfield College with a minor in Psychology. After earning her undergraduate degree, Clark went on to earn her MS in Athletic Training from the University of Floriday in May of 2009 while working as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer. Clark was also a Teaching Assistant at the University of Florida. While obstaining her master's degree, Clark also worked as an athletic trainer at the Disney Wide World of Sports.

Nick Van Vught

Nick Van Vught joined the USM athletic training staff in 2007. He earned his MS at California University of Pennsylvania and BS at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Prior to his appointment here at USM, he was working as the Head Athletic Trainer at Windham High School in Windham, ME.

Jim SchillingJim Schilling joined the USM Department of Exercise, Health and Sports Sciences faculty in the fall of 2008. Prior to his appointment to USM, he was employed as a Clinical Athletic Trainer at several hospitals and a Rehabilitation Director at private physician clinic.

Jim earned his PhD in Educational Administration and Leadership with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction at Marin University in Wisconsin, MS in Athletic Training at Indiana State University and BS in Industrial Technology at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.


Ben Towne, MA, ATC

Towne, BenBen Towne joined the USM Department of Exercise, Health & Sport Sciences Faculty in 2005. He recently served as Rehabilitation Coordinator from 2005-2007. Prior to his appointment to USM, he was the Assistant Athletic Trainer and Clinical Educator at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. He currently leads students twice yearly to the Dominican Republic for an International Service Learning Course and also serves as an ATC for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Teams. He also serves on the International Council for the National Athletic Trainers Association and is active in the World Federation of Athletic Training & Therapy. He has presented at the state and national level on International Service Learning in Athletic Training Education. He was the recipient of the 2008 CONHP Faculty Service Award. Ben was also awarded the 2008 Mike Linkovich Grant and the 2009 OA Centers for Orthopaedics Professional Scholarship Award.

Ben earned his MA in Physical Education at Western Michigan University and a BS in Sports Medicine at Lyndon State University in Lyndonville, Vermont.
