Meaghan Lumbis Named Little East Conference Volleyball Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore setter Meaghan Lumbis (Leverett, Mass./
Amherst Regional HS) of the University of Southern Maine volleyball team has
been named Player of the Week by the Little East Conference for the period of
September 27-October 3.
This is the first time that a USM player has been selected as LEC
volleyball Player of the Week since the award began last year.
Lumbis helped the Huskies compile a 4-2 mark in six matches last week,
including reaching the championship match at the Salem State College
Invitational Volleyball Tournament. That achievement marked the first time that
the Huskies have reached the championship round of a tournament since USM
reinstated volleyball as a varsity sport in 1996.
In the six matches (including a weekday match against Husson), the 5-foot-
6 setter had 136 assists, 18 kills, a .593 hitting percentage, 13 service aces
and 12 blocks. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Salem State
Invitational. She helped the Huskies post wins over Salem State and the
University of Maine at Farmington in pool play, and a semifinal victory over
Eastern Nazarene College. Both USM losses in the tournament came at the hands
of tournament champion Mount Holyoke College.
The vastly improved Huskies are 7-9 overall on the season, and 1-2 in
Little East Conference play. The seven wins this season already exceeds last
year's total, and the high-water mark since 1996 of 10 wins should be surpassed
later this month.
For the season, Lumbis has 339 assists (5.75 per game), 45 kills, a .341
hitting percentage and 35 blocks. This is her first season playing volleyball
for the Huskies. She also is a member of USM's softball team that went to the
NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament last spring.

Dube, Kittrick Named USM Volleyball Captains
Huskies Open Season September 11
GORHAM, Maine -- Record-setting seniors Stacy Dube (Milton Mills,
N.H./Nute H.S.) and Sarah Kittrick (Millinocket, Maine/Stearns H.S.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team have been named captains
for the upcoming 1999 season. Husky coaches Annette Caldwell and Hobson
Jandebeur made the announcement this week.
The Huskies open the upcoming season September 11-12 when they travel to
Keene, N.H., to play Little East Conference rivals Keene State College (Sept.
11, 7:00), Western Connecticut State University (Sept. 12, 10:00 a.m.), and
Plymouth State College (Sept. 12, 12:30 p.m.).
This is the third consecutive year that Dube, an outside hitter, has
shared the captain's responsibilities. Last fall, she was co-captain with Kelly
Poulin, and two years ago with Ann Messinger. This is the first time Kittrick,
a middle hitter/middle blocker has served as a team captain.
Both players were among the Little East Conference leaders last season in
kills per game (2.49 kills per game for Dube and 2.44 kills per game for
Kittrick to rank sixth and seventh, respectively). Dube also was among LEC
leaders in service aces (0.63 per game) and digs (3.47 per game). Kittrick was
fourth in hitting percentage (.292).
Last fall, Dube was named to three all-tournament teams, including at the
Little East Conference championship tournament. Kittrick picked up one all-
tournament honor.
Last season, Kittrick led the team in hitting percentage (.292) and solo
blocks (72), and was second to Dube in total attacks (592) and kills (266).
Dube topped the Huskies in total attacks (635), kills (271), kills per game
(2.49), receiving percentage (.850), service aces (69), aces per game (0.63),
digs (378) and digs per game (3.47).
The 5-foot-7 Dube holds or shares 23 school records while the 5-foot-11
Kittrick owns or shares 22 school records. Those records are based upon single
match, single season and career statistics since USM reinstated volleyball as a
varsity sport in 1996, and do not include incomplete statistics for the 1967-86
seasons.
The remainder of the Huskies' 1999 schedule is as follows: Sept. 15, at
University of New England (6:00); Sept. 18, at Husson with UMaine Machias
(10:00 a.m.); Sept. 22, St. Joseph's (7:00); Sept. 24-25, at Bridgewater State
