Ashley Freeman Named LEC Volleyball Rookie of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine freshman middle blocker
Ashley Freeman (Gorham, Maine/Gorham HS) has been named the 2004 Little East
Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Year following a vote by the conference's head
coaches. The award, along with other individual awards and the all-conference
teams, was announced Monday afternoon.
She is the first volleyball player in the program's history (post 1996) to be
named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Year.
Freeman paced Southern Maine in several statistical categories from her
middle blocker position, leading the Huskies with 279 kills and 79 blocks. She
also added 43 service aces and 240 digs. Freeman averaged 2.47 kills and 2.07
digs per game for the Huskies who finished the season at 15-16 overall and 1-6 in
the conference.
"(Freeman) is a really good competitor. She insisted on making herself the
best player she could be all season long," commented head coach John Razsa, the
2003 LEC Coach of the Year. "Her net play was essential to our team's play this
season. She made it easier for us to play defense when she was blocking, and she
made great improvements in the back row as the season went along, which was a huge
plus for us."
The 5-foot-9 rookie reached double-digits in kills 10 times for the Huskies,
and was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week twice during the
season.
