WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College White Mules volleyball team made
quick work of the University of Southern Maine Huskies taking a 3-0 non-
conference win Wednesday night at the Wadsworth Gymnasium. Game scores were
30-11, 30-14 and 30-14.
With the win, Colby improves to 28-3 on the season. The Huskies concluded
their 2005 campaign with a 6-22 record.
Senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Adams (Athol, Mass.) led the White Mules with
10 kills and four blocks and freshman setter Jenny Lawrence (Lafayette, Calif.)
effectively spread out the Colby offense with 23 assists. Lawrence also added a
match-high seven service aces.
Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) paced
the Huskies with six kills. Senior outside hitter Amanda Starkey (Center
Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) added five kills.
Colby will travel to Williams College for a NESCAC Round Robin. The White
Mules will face Middlebury College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday (October 28) and then
play Hamilton College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by a 4:00 p.m. match
against Williams.

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior middle hitter Amanda Johnson (Meredith, N.H./
Inter-Lakes) swung for a match-high 10 kills to lead the University of New
England Nor’easters to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine
Huskies, Monday in a non-conference volleyball match at the Campus Center. Game
scores were 30-21, 32-30 and 30-27.
Rallying from an 18-9 deficit in the third game to take the match in three
games straight, the Nor’easters secured their second straight win to improve to
8-10 on the season. The Huskies, losing their 10th consecutive match, fall to
6-21.
Sophomore setter Alissa Ehmke (Bailey’s Harbor, Wis./Gibraltar) set up the
Nor’easters offensive attack spreading out 27 assists. Senior outside hitter
Katharine Mack (Meredith, N.H./ Inter–Lakes) and junior outside hitter Rachel
Seawards (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) took advantage of Ehmke’s passing
combining for 15 kills.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown)
paced the Huskies with nine kills and two solo blocks, while freshman outside
hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) added seven kills and three
service aces. Freshman setter Katy Howlett (Mars Hill, Maine/Manconaquah
(Ind.)) contributed 23 assists. Defensively, freshman Allison White (Northboro,
Mass./Algonquin Regional) dug out a match-best 21 digs.
The Huskies remain on the road for their next contest when they travel to
Waterville, Maine for a non-conference match against the White Mules of Colby
College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26. The University of New England
returns to action on the same day when the Nor’easters travel to Colby-Sawyer
College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at 7:00 p.m.

WILLAMANTIC, Conn. - The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball
team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon falling to the Eastern
Connecticut State Warriors, 3-1, and the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, 3-0,
in a Little East Conference Round Robin hosted by Eastern Connecticut.
In other matches, Eastern Connecticut (21-9; 6-1) defeated Plymouth State
University, 3-1. Plymouth State (18-13; 6-1) opened its day by beating Rhode
Island College (20-13; 4-3) in five games.
The Huskies, who have lost their last nine matches, fall to 6-20 overall
and 0-7 in conference play.
In the first match of the day for the Huskies, Eastern Connecticut rallied
from a one-game deficit to earn the win, 27-30, 30-20, 30-17 and 30-15. Senior
co-captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) recorded a double-
double in the loss for Southern Maine with a team-high 11 kills and 13 digs.
Starkey also added two solo blocks. Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) swung for six kills and added three service aces
and 15 digs.
In the second match, Rhode Island made quick work of Southern Maine downing
the Huskies in three straight, 30-20, 30-27 and 30-17.
Starkey and freshman outside hitter Michelle Pickerell (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) led the Huskies with six kills a piece. Freshman setter Katy
Howlett (Mars Hill, Maine/Maconaquah (Ind.)) racked up 17 assists to go along
with her 11 digs and three service aces in a solid outing. In the two matches,
Howlett recorded 41 assists.
Southern Maine returns to action Monday (October 24) in a non-conference
match against the University of New England Nor'easters. First serve is slated
for 6:00 p.m. Eastern Connecticut hosts Western New England College on Tuesday
at 7:00 p.m. for its next contest, and Rhode Island hosts Connecticut College on
Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball
team dropped a tough, 3-2 decision to the University of Maine at Farmington
Beavers in a non-conference volleyball match Thursday evening in Farmington.
With the loss the Huskies slip to 6-18 overall. The Beavers improve their
overall mark to 16-7, and extended their winning streak to 12 matches dating
back to a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s College (Maine) on September 28.
The Huskies received strong offensive efforts from freshman outside hitter
Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and senior co-captain Amanda
Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown). Stoll led the Huskies with 26 digs
while Starkey strung together an impressive string of statistics with 20 kills,
22 digs and five solo blocks. Freshman setter Katy Howlett (Mars Hill, Maine/
Maconaquah (Ind.)) and sophomore setter Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./
Somersworth) combined for 49 assists. Howlett led the Huskies with 29 assists
while Daigle added 20 assists and 14 digs.
UMaine Farmington was led by senior setter Jill Ekstedt’s (Wells, Maine)
eight service aces in the match.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (October 22) on the road for its
final Little East Round Robin at Eastern Connecticut State University. Matches
begin at 1:00 p.m. UMaine Farmington hosts Husson and Maine Maritime for two
North Atlantic Conference matches on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies
volleyball team dropped three matches Saturday in the final day of play at the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational in North Dartmouth, Mass.
The Huskies suffered three consecutive three-game defeats at the hands of
the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, the University of Massachusetts
Boston Beacons and the host Corsairs. Following the three losses, the Huskies
are now 6-17 on the season.
In the first match of the day, Wentworth downed the Huskies 30-18, 30-20
and 30-23. Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)
and senior co-captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) led the
Huskies offensively with nine and seven kills respectively. Stoll added three
service aces, while Starkey chipped in with two solo blocks.
Against UMass Boston, the Huskies dropped the match 30-25, 30-23 and 31-29.
Starkey and Stoll again sparked the Huskies' attack. Starkey was a force both
offensively and defensively in the loss racking up 14 kills and a season-high
six solo blocks, while Stoll added seven kills. Freshman defensive specialist
Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) recorded a career-high 48
digs in the match.
In the final match of the day, UMass Dartmouth ousted the Huskies 30-12,
30-27 and 30-15. Starkey paced the Huskies in the match with nine kills, seven
digs and two solo blocks, while Stoll added seven kills and seven digs. Stoll,
who finished the two-day, four-match tournament with 29 kills, was named to the
all-tournament team.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road Thursday (October 20) against
the University of Maine at Farmington. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

volleyball team dropped a three-game match Friday night to the Babson College
Beavers in the first day of play at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Invitational. Game scores were 30-22, 30-19 and 30-15.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to 6-14 overall. The Beavers improve their
overall mark to 6-12.
Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led
the Huskies with six kills, nine digs and two service aces. Sophomore outside
hitter Amanda Moore (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) added four kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore co-captain Ellie Daigle (Rollingsford, N.H./Somersworth) passed off 18
assists in the loss.

Husson Handles Huskies 3-0

BANGOR, Maine -- The Husson College Eagles gutted out a hard-fought,
three-game win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team
Tuesday night at the Newman Gymnasium in Bangor. Game scores were 34-32, 31-29
and 30-28.
The win avenged an earlier loss for the Eagles who dropped a 3-1 match to
the Huskies last weekend at the UMaine Farmington Tournament. The Eagles
improved their overall record to 14-5 with the win. Suffering their second loss
in as many matches the Huskies dropped to 6-13 on the season.
Freshman outside hitter Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonguin Regional)
turned in an admirable performance for the Huskies recording her first career
double-double in the loss. White, who normally fills the role of defensive
specialist, paced Southern Maine offensively with a team-high 10 kills and 13
digs.
Freshman outside hitter Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) added six
kills and three service aces for Southern Maine while classmate Shannon Stoll
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) chipped in with six kills, four service aces and
shared team-high dig honors with 15. Freshman Michelle Pickerell (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) also had 15 digs for the Huskies.
The Eagles were paced by senior Sonya McCarthy (Staceyville, ME) who
recorded 19 digs, seven kills, three service aces, and twp assists in the three
games. Sophomore Ashley Cough (Bar Harbor, ME) also played a strong match
chipping in with 23 digs, eight kills and six service aces. Junior Tricia
Porter (North Hampton, NH) had 25 assists while sophomore Rachel Russell
(Trenton, ME) had nine kills.
Southern Maine returns to the courts this Friday and Saturday (October 14-
15) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational in North
Dartmouth, Mass. The Huskies will play their first match of the event at 7:30
p.m. on Friday against Babson College. Husson plays again on the same dates at
the UMaine Machias Invitational.

In the win over Husson, Stoll sparked the Huskies both offensively and
defensively with a team-high 13 kills, 12 service aces, two solo blocks and
eight digs. Starkey added 12 kills and a solo block as the Huskies defeated
the Eagles in four games, 30-21, 27-30, 31-29 and 30-20. Sophomore setter Ellie
Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) passed off 30 assists in the win.
In their second match of the day, the Huskies dropped a five-game match to
UMaine Presque Isle 28-30, 30-22, 27-30, 31-29 and 9-15. Stoll and Starkey
again paced the Husky attack registering 14 and 13 kills respectively. Freshman
outside hitter Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) added seven kills and
seven digs for Southern Maine in a solid all around effort. Starkey and Stoll
also led the Huskies defensively notching 11 digs each. Freshman defensive
specialist Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) also tallied 11
digs for Southern Maine, adding three service aces.
Southern Maine returns to action, Tuesday, October 11 for a 7:00 p.m. match
at Husson College. UMaine Presque Isle remains on the road and will play in

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington Beavers downed
the University of Southern Maine Huskies in four games, 3-1, to a take a non-
conference volleyball win Friday night at Dearborn Gymnasium in Farmington,
Maine. It was the first of three matches for the Huskies at the UMaine
Farmington Invitational.
The Beavers, winners of three straight matches, improve to 8-6 overall with
the win. The Huskies drop their third straight match to fall to 5-11.
The Beavers routed the Huskies in the first two games, winning the opening
game 30-13 and taking the second 30-11. The Huskies rallied to take the third
game by a narrow 30-28 advantage before dropping the fourth game 30-18.
Senior Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) and sophomore
Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) paced Southern Maine offensively
with five kills each. Defensively, freshman outside hitter Cassi Sticht
(Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) led the Huskies with eight digs.
Southern Maine will play the remainder of its matches in the tournament on
Saturday. The Huskies will play the Husson College Eagles at 11:00 a.m. in
their first match of the day, and conclude play by taking on the University of
Maine at Presque Isle Owls at 1:00 p.m. UMaine Farmington plays later Friday
evening against UMaine Presque Isle.

BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team
dropped a hard-fought, five-game Little East Conference match to the University
of Massachusetts Boston Beacons at the Clark Athletic Center Tuesday night.
Game scores were 30-23, 24-30, 27-30, 30-26 and 6-15.
With the loss, the Huskies remain winless in the Little East at 0-5 and
drop to 5-10 overall. The win is the first in conference play for the Beacons
who are now 1-4 in the LEC and 3-6 overall.
Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)
continued her torrid pace, leading the Huskies offensively with an outstanding
22 kills and 35 digs. Stoll also led the Huskies with three service aces.
Senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) added 16 kills
and 18 digs along with two solo blocks in a solid effort for Southern Maine.
USM sophomore setter Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) passed off a
career-high 47 assists in the loss.
Sophomore outside hitter Denise Hill (Toa Baja, PR) smashed 17 kills and
served up an ace to lead the Beacons. Hill hit .216 for the match and added 12
digs to her night as well, while freshman outside hitter Tanya Beckford
(Framingham, Mass.) spiked for 13 kills, including four in the deciding game, in
addition to a match-high four aces and 14 digs for UMass Boston. Senior
Stephanie Adams (Whitman, Mass.) got on the floor for a team-high 15 digs to go
with eight kills and three blocks, while hitting .263. Junior setter Juliane
Farias (Cambridge, Mass.) has 38 assists and also scooped up six digs.
The Huskies return to action this Friday and Saturday (October 7-8) at the
University of Maine Farmington Invitational. The Huskies play at 6:00 p.m. on
Friday against UMaine Farmington before playing two matches on Saturday at 11:00
a.m. and 1:00 p.m. against Husson College and UMaine Presque Isle respectively.

SALEM, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's
volleyball team sandwiched two three-game losses around a four-game win at the
Salem State College Invitational Saturday in Salem, Mass.
The Huskies opened the three-match invitational with a 3-0 loss to the
Mount Holyoke College Lyons before defeating the host Salem State College
Vikings 3-1. In their third match of the day, the Huskies were again dealt a
three-game loss, this time to the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons.
With their 1-2 mark at the invitational the Huskies stand at 5-9 overall on the
season.
In their win over Salem State, the Huskies parlayed the stellar play of
freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) into a
30-26, 30-27, 22-30, 30-24 win. Stoll racked up a double-double with a season-
high 22 kills and 12 digs to lead Southern Maine. Southern Maine sophomore
setter Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) also notched a season-high
for the Huskies passing off 46 assists.
In the Huskies' first match of the day, Mount Holyoke quickly defeated the
Huskies in three games, 30-21, 30-16 and 30-19. The Huskies were unable to find
their offensive rhythm in the match. Daigle and Stoll were the Huskies lone
bright spots recording four and three service aces each.
Against UMass Boston, Southern Maine's final match of the day, the Huskies
offensive woes continued as the Beacons dispatched USM in three games 30-10,
30-16 and 30-27. Stoll again led the Huskies mustering five kills and two
service aces. Defensively, senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead,
N.H./Coe-Brown) came up with two solo blocks. Starkey ended the invitational
with seven solo blocks recording three against Mount Holyoke and two against
Salem State. Starkey also added 11 kills in the Huskies 3-1 win over Salem
State.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road against UMass Boston, Tuesday,
October 4. The Huskies will challenge the Beacons in a Little East Conference
match beginning at 6:00 p.m.

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore middle-hitter Nazareth Cordoso (Brockton,
Mass./Brockton) hit for a team-high eight kills and served for three aces to
lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women’s volleyball match Wednesday
night at Hill Gymnasium on the Gorham campus.
With the win the Corsairs move to 5-6 overall and even out at 2-2 in the
Little East. The loss snaps a two-match win streak for the Huskies who fall to
4-7 overall and remain winless at 0-4 in the conference.
Cordoso ended the match for the Corsairs with her third service ace of the
night to cap a come-from-behind rally for UMass Dartmouth in the third game.
Trailing early in the third game, the Corsairs used a string of three service
aces from junior setter Lauren Daly (Brockton, Mass./ Brockton) to regain the
lead and take the match. Daly ended the match with a team-high 17 assists while
Cordoso swung for four of her eight kills in the third game.
Sophomore outside hitter Britney Coyle (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) added
seven kills in the win while freshman libero Melanie Staiger (Bourne,
Mass./Bourne) had a team-high 18 digs. Freshman middle-hitter Hilary Teichart
(Bourne, Mass./Bourne) posted two solo blocks in the win.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) led
the Husky attack with 10 kills. Freshman outside hitter Cassi Sticht (Meredith,
N.H./Inter-Lakes) added eight kills and freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) chipped in with six kills, a team-high six
service aces and eight digs. Sophomore setter Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford,

digs.

Invitational. The Huskies will play the first of their three matches beginning

Southern Maine's Stoll Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Shrewsbury) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's volleyball
team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week
of September 19-25.
It is the first time that Stoll has earned the weekly honor and the first
time that a USM volleyball player has been recognized by the LEC during the 2005
season.
Stoll led the Huskies to a pair of wins in a 2-1 week. Stoll strung
together two outstanding performances as the Huskies won back-to-back matches at
the Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Bowdoin College this past weekend. In her
first match, Stoll put up solid numbers recording six kills, eight service aces,
three digs and a solo block to lead USM to a 3-0 win over the University of
Maine at Machias Clippers.
In the Huskies second match of the day, Stoll led her team to a win
recording a triple-double with 11 kills, 16 service aces and 28 digs as Southern
Maine eked out a 3-2 victory over the Salem State College Vikings.
For the season, Stoll is averaging a team-high 2.55 kills and 1.79 service
aces per game. She is also among the team leaders in digs per game averaging
2.45.
The pair of victories halted a five-game slide for the Huskies and improved
their overall record to 4-6 on the season. The Huskies return to action
Wednesday, September 28, at home against LEC rival, the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs. The first serve is slated for 6:00 p.m.

Huskies Take Two at Polar Bear Invitational
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Shrewsbury HS) hit for 11 kills and stroked 14 service aces and senior
captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) swung for a team-high
18 kills to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-2 win over the
Salem State College Lady Vikings in their second match of the Polar Bear
Invitational hosted by Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The Huskies also
defeated the UMaine Machias Clippers 3-0 in their first match of the day.
With the pair of victories, USM snapped a five-match losing streak to
improve to 4-6 overall. Both UMaine Machias and Salem State are still in the
hunt for their first wins of the season. UMM stands at 0-6 while Salem State
dipped to 0-7.
Stoll was instrumental in the Huskies five-game (30-20, 30-28, 16-30,
24-30, 15-7) win over Salem State. Aside from her double-digit kill and ace
total, Stoll led the Huskies defensively with a 28 digs. Sophomore setter Ellie
Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) keyed the Huskies offense passing off a
season-high 37 assists. Daigle added five kills and 15 digs in the match, while
freshman defensive specialist Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonguin
Regional) and freshman Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) added 18 digs
each.
In their first match of the day, the Huskies made quick work of UMaine
Machais, dispatching the Clippers in three games (30-22, 30-13, 30-10).
Although the Huskies did not record a large number of kills, Southern Maine
was able to keep the Clippers defenses off balance with a number of service
aces. Daigle led the Huskies with a match-high 16 service aces to go along
with her 10 assists in the match, while Stoll scorched the Clippers for eight
aces and a team-high six kills. White (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional)
added six aces and six digs in the Husky effort.
Southern Maine returns to action at home Wednesday, September 28 at home
against Little East Conference rival, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Corsairs. The Huskies are currently 0-3 in conference action.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior right-side hitter Jasmine McDavid (Brooklyn, N.Y./
Choate Rosemary) swung for 12 kills as the Bates College Bobcats outlasted the
University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a non-conference women’s volleyball
match, Tuesday in Gorham.
With the win, Bates improves its overall record to 2-6. The Huskies
suffering their fifth consecutive loss drop to 2-6.
Bates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead cruising to wins in the first and
second games 30-14 and 30-16. But the Huskies clawed their way back into the
match on the heels of a tremendous performance from freshman outside hitter
Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) to earn a hard-fought 30-27 win in
the third game.
Stoll stroked seven service aces and served for 11 of the Huskies 30
points, including a string of six points to rally the Huskies ahead 27-24 late
in the third game.
The fourth game was just as hotly contested as the third, but Bates
prevailed 30-25 to take the match 3-1. McDavid hit for four of her team-high 12
kills in the fourth game.
Bates junior setter Kate Graeff (Chevy Chase, Md./Maret School) effectively
quarterbacked her team to the win recording a team-high 23 assists, while junior
libero Lauren Gold (Sacremento, Calif./Hotchkiss) led the Bobcats defensively
with 11 digs. Gold also added a team-high four service aces in the win.
The Huskies were paced by senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead,
N.H./Coe-Brown) who ended the game with a double-double on 14 kills and 15 digs,
both match-high totals. Stoll finished the match with 10 kills, seven service
aces, and four digs. Sophomore setter Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Inter-
Lakes) had 29 assists in the effort, while freshman outside hitter Allison White
(Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) chipped in with eight kills and eight
digs.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday, September 24 at the Polar Bear
Invitational hosted by Bowdoin College. The Huskies will play in their first
match of the day at 10 a.m. The Bobcats return to the court on the road at the
MIT Tournament, September 23-24. Bates begins its play in the tournament Friday
at 6 p.m.

Plymouth State and Keene State Halt Huskies at LEC Round Robin
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The University of Southern Maine Huskies dropped both of
their matches Saturday in the final day of play in the Little East Round Robin
hosted by the Plymouth State University Panthers in Plymouth, N.H. The Huskies
fell to both the Keene State College Owls and Plymouth State by the identical
score of 3-0.
With the pair of the losses, the Huskies have now lost four consecutive
matches to drop to 2-5 overall and are winless in the Little East with a 0-3
record. Keene State, with its win over Southern Maine, improved its record to
5-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference while Plymouth State, the reigning LEC
champions, move to 9-3 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
The Huskies put up a solid fight against the Panthers in their second match
of the day, but still fell in three games by the scores of 30-15, 30-23 and
30-28. Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and
senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) led Southern
Maine offensively recording nine kills each. Sophomore captain Ellie Daigle
(Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) racked up a double-double with 22 assists and 16
digs, while freshman Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonguin Regional) led the
Huskies with 17 digs. White added four service aces in a solid performance.
In the first match of the day, the Huskies fell to Keene State in three straight
games. The Owls easily handled Southern Maine winning the match 30-10, 30-22
and 30-18. The Huskies struggled offensively in the match as Stoll paced the
team with five kills.
Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday, September 20 in its home opener
against the Bates College Bobcats. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. Keene
State remains on the road for its next match squaring off against Colby-Sawyer
on the 20th at 7:00 p.m. Plymouth State faces off against Endicott at home on
the same date at 6:00 p.m.

Huskies Fall To Western Connecticut In First Little East Conference Match
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Western Connecticut State University Colonials swept
the University of Southern Maine Huskies to earn a 3-0 win in a Little East
Conference women's volleyball match Friday night at the first day of play at the
Little East Round Robin hosted by Plymouth State University in Plymouth, N.H.
The match was the conference opener for both schools. With the win, the
Colonials improve their overall record to 2-3 and move to 1-0 in LEC action.
The loss is the second straight for the Huskies who are now 2-3 overall and 0-1
in conference action.
Senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-Brown) led the
Huskies in nearly every statistical category in the loss. Starkey hit for six
kills, recorded a team-best 13 digs and served for four aces. Starkey was also
a monster defensively for Southern Maine, recording a season-best eight solo
blocks.
Freshman Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led the Huskies in
kills and aces with 12 and five respectively, while sophomore captain Ellie
Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) tallied 20 assists.
Both the Huskies and the Colonials return to action tomorrow in the second
day of the Little East Round Robin. The Huskies return to the court at 11:00
a.m. to face the Keene State College Owls and then will face off against 2004
Little East Conference champions the Plymouth State University Panthers at 1:00
p.m. Western Connecticut plays the opposite schedule challenging the Panthers
at 11:00 a.m. and then the Owls at 1:00 p.m.

Huskies Split At Colby Invitational
WATERVILLE, Maine - Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Shrewsbury) had 14 kills and eight service aces to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a split of their two matches Saturday in the second
day of the Colby College Invitational played at the Wadsworth Gymnasium in
Waterville.
Stoll led the Huskies to a 3-0 win over the University of Maine Machias
Clippers in their first match of the day. Game scores were 30-10, 30-11 and
30-4. In USM's second match of the day, the Huskies fell to the host Colby
College White Mules in three games, 30-20, 30-12 and 30-12. UMaine Machias is
0-3 with the loss. Colby won the event and remains undefeated through its four
matches of the season at 4-0.
Stoll was the Huskies lone player in double-digit kills as Southern Maine
scored a bulk of its points off of the serve. On top of Stoll's eight service
aces, freshman setter Katy Howlitt (Mars Hill, Maine/Maconaquah (Ind.)) had 11
aces to go with her team-high 22 assists while freshman outside hitter Cassi
Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) kept the Clippers off-balance with a team-
high 13 service aces.
Defensively, the Huskies received solid contributions from both Sticht and
freshman libero Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) with eight
digs each. Sophomore captain Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./Somersworth) led
Southern Maine with 10 digs.
In the second match, Colby defeated the Huskies in three games. After
challenging the White Mules 30-20 in the first game of the match, the Huskies
were maligned with injuries, dropping the second and third game by the identical
scores of 30-12. Stoll again paced the Huskies offensively with five kills,
while White and Stitch added five and three service aces respectively.
Southern Maine returns to action next Friday and Saturday (September 16-17)
at the Little East Conference Round Robin hosted by Plymouth State University.
Matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

University of Southern Maine Huskies in three games en route to a 3-0 non-
conference volleyball win Friday night at the Colby College Invitational in
Waterville, Maine. Game scores were 30-20, 30-18 and 30-24.
The match was the season-opener for the Polar Bears, who stand at 1-0. The
loss evens the Huskies’ record to 1-1.
Senior co-captain and outside hitter Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead,
N.H./Coe-Brown) paced the Huskies in the loss. Starkey ended the match with a
team-high six kills and three blocks and shared team-high honors with freshmen
Allison White (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and Michelle Pickrell
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) with five digs each.
Freshman setter Katy Howlett (Mars Hill, Maine/Maconaquah (Ind.)) led
Southern Maine in assists for the second consecutive match with 14. Howlett
also added a team-high five service aces and sophomore outside hitter Courtney
Parent (Shoreham, Vermont/Fairhaven Union) added four service aces in the
effort.
The Huskies return to action Saturday (September 10) in the second day of
the tournament. USM will square off against host Colby College at 10:00 a.m. in

Southern Maine Rallies to Down St. Joseph's 3-2
STANDISH, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball
team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the St.
Joseph's College Monks, Tuesday evening at the Alfond Center in Standish. The
match was the season-opener for both teams.
After winning the first game of the match, 30-27, Southern Maine dropped
the second and third game, including a hard-fought 33-31 third game, to trail
the Monks 2-1. But the Huskies roared back to win the pivotal fourth game
decisively 30-20 to force the match-deciding fifth game. In the fifth game,
after ties at 4-4, 8-8 and 11-11, the Huskies pulled away to closed out the
match with a 15-13 win.
Freshman outside hitter Shannon Stoll (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) paced
Southern Maine to the win with a team-high 11 kills and an outstanding 15
service aces. Stoll's 15 service aces is a new school record for aces in a
five-game match, besting the previous record of nine set by Husky alumnae
Catherine Lewis on October 1, 2003 against UMass Dartmouth.
Freshman setter Katy Howlett (Mars Hills, Maine/Maconaquah (Ind.)) quarterbacked
the Husky attack with 29 assists in her collegiate debut. Howlett effectively
spread out the USM offense as freshman outside hitter Cassi Sticht (Meredith,
N.H./Inter-Lakes) and senior captain Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead, N.H./Coe-
Brown Academy) added nine and eight kills respectively. The 5-10 Starkey was
also a force defensively for the Huskies, recording three solo blocks during the
match.
Sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) provided a much needed spark for the
Monks in games two and three and finished the match with eight kills and four
blocks. Junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) registered eight assists, five
kills, two aces and 10 digs in four games. Sophomore Stephanie Furtado (W.
Warwick, RI) had 16 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Kelly King (Ctr. Harbor, NH)
had six kills and seven blocks while junior Kathleen Lemon (Sanford, ME)
recorded eight digs.

Starkey and Daigle Named 2005 Southern Maine Volleyball Captains
GORHAM, Maine - Senior outside hitter Amanda Starkey (Center Barnstead,
N.H./Coe Brown) and sophomore opposite Ellie Daigle (Rollinsford, N.H./
Somersworth HS) have been named co-captains for the 2005 University of
Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team.
Starkey, a 2002 and 2003 second team All-Little East Conference selection,
returns to the Huskies line-up after spending a semester at Keene State College.
In 2003, Starkey led the Huskies in kills (351) and hitting percentage (.296).
Daigle, who completed a solid rookie season, finished her freshman campaign
third on the team in kills (113), service aces (43) and digs (322).
"As a senior, Amanda brings maturity to a young team," noted third-year
head coach John Razsa. "She has experience in competitive college volleyball
and in the Little East Conference. She also has a tremendous personality and
has helped our incoming athletes make the transition to collegiate volleyball."
"Ellie proved herself as a team player as a freshman," said Razsa. "She is
a very well-rounded player and person, and she's always willing to pitch in and
do the behind-the-scenes work to make the team operate smoothly. I believe they
will serve as fine captains as we work to grow as a team and improve upon our
past success"
The Huskies, who finished last season with a 15-16 overall record, are
slated to begin their 2005 schedule on the road Tuesday (September 6) against
St. Joseph's College (Maine) at 8:00 p.m. The Huskies will then play four more
dates of competition on the road at the two-day Colby College Tournament (Sept.
9-10) and the Little East Round Robin at Plymouth State University (Sept. 16-
17). They will play their home-opener Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. versus
non-league foe Bates College. USM will play in the Polar Bear Invitational at
Bowdoin College (Sept. 24) before closing out the month of September at home
against LEC rival UMass Dartmouth (Sept. 28).
USM begins the month of October at the Salem State Invitational (Oct. 1)
before traveling to LEC opponent UMass Boston (Oct. 4). The Huskies will then
return to Maine to play in the UMaine Farmington Invitational (Oct. 7-8) and at
Husson (Oct. 11). They head back to Massachusetts for the UMass Dartmouth
Invitational (Oct. 14-15).
The Huskies will play their only home contest of the month against Bowdoin
(Oct. 18) before closing out the remainder of their regular season schedule on
the road. USM will begin its four-game road swing against UMaine Farmington
(Oct. 20) and then will travel to Eastern Connecticut State University for a
Little East Round Robin (Oct. 22). In a pair of non-league contests, the
Huskies will take on University of New England (Oct. 24) and Colby (Oct. 26)
before heading into the LEC tournament.
