Southern Maine Falls to Eastern Connecticut and UMass Dartmouth 3-0 Huskies Conclude First Varsity Season Since 2006
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the season, falling to the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors and the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs by the score of 3-0. The Warriors defeated USM 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19, while the Corsairs downed the Huskies 25-14, 25-13 and 25-17. Senior Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) paced the Huskies with a double-double with 13 kills and 13 assists. Senior middle blocker Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) added eight kills, four services aces, one block and a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) had 18 assists. With the pair of losses, Southern Maine concludes its first varsity season since 2006 with a record of 4-19 and 0-7 in the Little East. UMass Dartmouth finishes its season at 18-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference. Eastern Connecticut, which defeated UMass Dartmouth 3-0, improves to 12-17 and 2-5 in the LEC earns the final berth into the 2009 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship tournament. The Warriors will be the sixth seed and face third-seed Western Connecticut on Tuesday (TBA). At North Dartmouth, Mass. St. Joseph’s College Defeats Southern Maine 3-0
STANDISH, Maine – Freshman middle blocker Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) had 11 kills, five digs and four solo blocks to lead the St. Josephs’ College Monks to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Thursday night in a non-conference women’s volleyball match at the Harold Alfond Center in Standish, Maine. With the loss Southern Maine falls to 4-17 overall. St. Joseph’s College halts a three-match losing streak to improve to 15-16 with the win. Freshman outside hitter Caitlin Cleary (Scarborough, Maine) added seven kills for the Monks and freshman defensive specialist Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) paced the Monks defensively with 23 digs. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) played a solid match for Southern Maine. Boulay had a team-high 14 digs and eight assists with pair of service aces. Senior middle blocker Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) had six kills and six digs. Levine, Conroy Lead Colby Over Southern Maine 3-0
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Larissa Levine (Potomac, Md.) and Megan Conroy (San Francisco, Calif.) each had big days in their final collegiate home matches as the Colby College Mules volleyball team took a 3-0 win over University of Southern Maine Huskies on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. The Mules won by set scores of 25-17, 25-9, 25-19. Colby improves to 8-16 with the victory. With the loss, Southern Maine falls to 4-16 overall. Levine, a senior middle blocker, came into the match with just eight service aces in her career. She got in a rhythm in the second set and won 15 straight points, including six aces. Levine finished the match with seven aces and added seven defensive digs. Conroy also had a memorable final home match with nine kills and 11 digs. She reached 800 career digs and now has 372 kills and 803 digs. Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) added 12 assists, 11 digs, and two aces in two games. First-year setter Emily Ten Eyck (Minnetrista, Minn.) added 17 assists in two games, Mackie Sewall (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had nine kills, and Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) finished with five kills and 13 digs. Jordan Driscoll (Yarmouth, Maine) finished with 11 digs and four solo blocks for the Huskies. Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine) added 13 digs and seven ills, while Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) had 13 assists and four digs. Huskies Fall to Keene State and Rhode Island College Keene State Earns a Pair of LEC Wins
GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team dropped a pair of Little East Conference matches Saturday afternoon falling to the Keene State College Owls 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-17) and the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen 3-1 (25-6, 21-25, 25-14, 25-10). Keene State defeated the Anchorwomen in 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17). With the pair of losses, Southern Maine falls to 4-15 overall and 0-5 in the Little East Conference. Keene State halted a two-match losing streak to earn a pair of conference wins and improve to 15-15 overall and 4-3 in the LEC. Taking the split, Rhode Island College saw its four match win streak stopped by Keene State, but rebounded with a win over USM for a record of 17-15 and 3-2 in the conference. Sophomore middle blocker Ellyse Davis (Londonderry, N.H.) paced the Owls to the victory over USM hitting an outstanding .593 on 18 kills, two errors and 27 attempts. Junior outside hitter Jamie Levine (Medfield, Mass.) added nine kills and seven digs, while sophomore outside hitter Tiffani Brooks (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) chipped in with eight kills. Southern Maine senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) had eight kills and five digs to lead the Huskies and senior opposite Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) added seven kills. Rhode Island College freshman outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I./La Salle) led the Anchorwomen offensively in their 3-1 win over the Huskies. Boyer had 14 kills. Freshman Kayln Archer (Warwick, R.I./Bay View) added seven kills. Shuttle again paced USM with five kills and six digs. Netland added four kills and a team-high 13 digs. Davis and sophomore outside hitter Bridget O?Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) were leaders for the Owls offensively in their 3-1 win over Keene State College. Davis connected for 17 kills in 45 attempts with just two errors while O?Bryant added 10 kills and 11 digs for the double-double. Husson Blanks Southern Maine 3-0
BANGOR, Maine – Freshman middle hitter Hannah Olstad (Farmington, Maine) led a balanced attack with eight kills as the Husson University Eagles cruised to 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference women’s volleyball action Tuesday night in Bangor, Maine. The Eagles defeated Southern Maine in three games 25-18, 25-16 and 25-21. Husson improves to 10-12 with the win. The loss stops a two-match win streak for the Huskies who fall to 4-13 overall. Sophomore middle hitter Kaitlyn McKay (Lincoln, R.I.) added seven kills and five digs, while senior outside hitter Maya Vysokikh (Novoskbirsk, Russia/Washington Academy) chipped in with six kills. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Smith paced the Eagles defensively with a team-high 10 digs. Huskies Win Two, Defeat Newbury 3-1 and Southern Vermont 3-0
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) combined for 26 kills and 19 digs and sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) had 55 assists, 22 digs and five service aces to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a pair of non-conference wins at the Newbury College Volleyball Tri-Match Saturday afternoon at Hellenic College in Brookline, Mass. Southern Maine defeated Southern Vermont 3-0 (25- 17, 25-3, 25-19) and then downed Newbury College in four game 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-22). With the pair of wins, Southern Maine improves to 4-12 overall, marking the first time since the 2006 season when USM earned consecutive victories. Newbury fell to 9-17 with the loss, while Southern Vermont dropped to 1-15. Both Shuttle and Boulay were outstanding in the 3-1 win over Newbury. Shuttle racked up a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Boulay quarterbacked the Huskies offense with 31 assists and 18 digs. Senior opposite Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and junior middle blocker Jordan Driscoll (Yarmouth, Maine) each turned in solid performances for the Huskies. Netland finished the two matches with 21 kills, 36 digs, eight service aces and two blocks. Driscoll tossed in seven kils, 25 digs, three service aces and a block. FARMINGTON, Maine – Sophomore opposite Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) led a balanced attack with nine kills as the UMaine Farmington Beavers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Wednesday night at Dearborn Gymnasium in Farmington, Maine. Earning its third straight victory, UMaine Farmington improves to 8-7 overall. The Huskies fall to 2-12 overall. Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Mullane (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills, while junior outside hitters Emily Beebe (South Paris, Maine) and Jenna Rowan (Kittery, Maine) tossed in seven kills each. Southern Maine Downs UMFK 3-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) had a match-high 19 kills to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the University of Maine Fort Kent in a non-conference volleyball match Friday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The teams split the first two games, USM winning game one 25-13 before UMFK won the second 25-22. USM regained the momentum winning the third game 25-20 before closing the match with a 25-18 decision in the decisive fourth game. The win snapped a six-match losing skid for the Huskies and improves their overall record to 2-11. The Bengals dropped their second straight match to fall to 5-4. The match was the first between the two sides since 1983. Shuttle had a fine all-around match adding seven service aces, 12 digs and one block to her 19 kills. Junior Samantha Ellis (Westerly, R.I.) and senior Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine) had strong defensive matches with 16 and 14 digs, respectively. Netland also had six kills and two blocks. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) had 20 assists and eight digs. For the Bengals, senior Ashley Ames (Dexter, Maine) paced the offense with 15 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Elsa Gelagay (San Jose, Calif.) added 13 kills and five service aces. Sophomore setter Amber Garrison (Oroville, Calif.) passed off 28 assists. UMass Boston Cruises Past Huskies 3-0
Gorham, Maine – Freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a match-high 14 kills on 17 swings to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 3-0 Little East Conference women’s volleyball win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Thursday night at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine. The Beacons cruised to the win defeating the Huskies 25-10, 25-7 and 25-9. Suffering its sixth straight loss, Southern Maine falls to 1-11 overall and remains winless in the Little East at 0-3. UMass Boston snaps a two-match losing streak and improves it overall record to 14-4 and remains undefeated in the conference at 3-0. Thompson hit a blazing .823 hitting percentage to pace the Beacons and added four digs. Freshman middle hitter Alexa Sullivan (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional), sophomore middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) each added five kills for the Beacons. Sullivan was a monster defensively for UMass Boston racking up six solo blocks, while McWhorter had six service aces. McWhorter’s serve proved to be effective for the Beacons, particularly in the second game. With the game tied at 4-4, McWhorter helped the Beacons run off 10 straight points to help her team to a 25-7 win in the second game. Sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, Colo./Arapahoe) and freshman setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, Alaska/Austin E. Lathrop) combined for 35 assists. Hanneman had 16 assists and six service aces and Burtness-Adams had 17 assists as the Beacons had a .632 hitting percentage for the match. Southern Maine Drops Three Matches at Salem State Invitational
SALEM, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s volleyball team dropped three matches at the 2009 Salem State College Vikings Invitational Saturday afternoon at the James Twohig Gymnasium in Salem, Mass. The Huskies fell to Salem State 3-1 (28-26, 25-15, 12-25, 25-17), the Mount St. Mary’s Blue Knights 3-1 (25-19, 25-11, 15-25, 25-21) and the Western New England College Bears 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-13). With the three losses Southern Maine dips to 1-10 overall. Salem State improved to 5-13 with the win, while Mount St. Mary’s improved to 10-9 and Western New England, which finished as the Invitational Champion, improved to 14-6. Southern Maine was led by senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, Mass./Mascenic Regional) and freshman outside hitter Samantha Poirier (Dover, N.H./Portsmouth Christian). Shuttle totaled 20 kills, 17 digs, seven service aces and two blocks in three matches. Poirier chipped in with 14 kills, 13 digs, four service aces and two blocks during the tournament. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) turned in a solid performance on both sides of the ball with 37 assists, five service aces and eight digs. Defensively, junior middle blocker Jordan Driscoll (Yarmouth, Maine) and senior opposite Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) paced USM. Driscoll had nine blocks, including two solo bocks, while Netland had 17 digs and four blocks. Huskies Fall to Plymouth State and Western Connecticut, 3-0
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies fell to the Plymouth State University Panthers and the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 3-0 in a pair of Little East Conference women’s volleyball matches Saturday afternoon hosted by Plymouth State at Foley Gymansium in Plymouth, N.H. The Huskies fell to Western Connecticut 25-14, 25-14 and 25-14 and then dropped a 25-8, 25-14 and 25-18 decision to Plymouth State. Plymouth State defeated Western Connecticut 3-0 (25-23, 25-20 and 25-20). With the pair of losses Southern Maine falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the Little East. Western Connecticut moves to 11-4 and 3-1 with the split, while Plymouth State remains undefeated at 12-0 and 4-0 in the conference. Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Macenic Regional) led Southern Maine with six kills against both Western Connecticut and Plymouth State. Huskies Earn First Win Since 2006 Southern Maine Downs Pine Manor 3-0
GORHAM, Maine – Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) a match-high 11 kills, five digs and four service aces to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Pine Manor College Gators Wednesday evening in a non-conference women’s volleyball match at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine. The Huskies defeated the Gators 25- 14, 25-10, 25-13. Earning their first win of the season, the Huskies also earned their first win since the 2006 season, and improve their record to 1-5. Dropping its third straight match, Pine Manor falls to 1-5 with the loss. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) helped orchestrate the USM offense passing off a match high 15 assists. Boulay added four service aces and a kill. Senior middle blocker Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) had four kills, four digs, four service aces and three blocks in a solid all around effort for the Huskies. Worcester State Blanks Southern Maine 3-0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Lauren Saylor (Swansea, Mass.) had a match-high nine kills to lead the Worcester State College Lancers to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Lancer Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass. With the loss Southern Maine remains winless at 0-5. Securing its home- opener match as a victory, the Lancers overall record to 4-6. Worcester State defeated Southern Maine 25-12, 25-15 and 25-21. Lancer sophomore outside hitter Katey Figella (Feeding Hills, Mass.) registered six kills and sophomore setter Brittney Stoddard (Orange, Mass.) orchestrated the Lancer attack with 20 assists. UMaine Farmington Fends off Southern Maine 3-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior outside hitter Jenna Rowan (Kittery, Maine) had a match-high 13 kills and a team nine-digs to lead the UMaine Farmington Beavers to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference women’s volleyball action Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine. Southern Maine won the first game of the match 25-16, but then the Beavers took the next three games 25-20, 25-14 and 25-15 for the win. Earning its first win of the season, UMaine Farmington improves to 1-4 overall. The Huskies remain winless at 0-4 with the loss. Rowan paced the Beavers with a solid .434 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 23 attempts and three errors. Sophomore opposite Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) tossed in nine kills. The Beavers were able to record 17 service aces in the match, led by an outstanding six aces from senior outside hitter Caitlin Flaherty (Plymouth, Mass.). Mitchell and junior Katie Allen (Bucksport, Maine) each had four aces. Allen also had a team-high 12 assists. Defensively UMF sophomore Amanda Mullane (Melrose, Mass.) recorded five solo blocks. Maine Maritime Cruises Past Southern Maine 3-0
CASTINE, Maine -- Freshman setter Jenn Dixon (Woodstock, Md.) set a school record with 38 assists to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Lady Mariners to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Tuesday night at Margaret Chase Smith Gymnasium in Castine, Maine. The Mariners defeated USM 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. With the win, the Lady Mariners remain undefeated and improve to 3-0 on the season. The Huskies drop their third straight match to fall to 0-3. Dixon paced a solid Maine Maritime attack that was led by sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Ward’s (Homer, Ak.) match-high 17 kills on 24 attempts. Senior hitter Amy Young (Cumberland, Maine) added 14 kills and added eight digs. Defensively, the Lady Mariners were led by Lauren Sakahara’s (Bellevue, Wash.) 12 digs. University of New England Defeats Southern Maine 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- In a decisive three-set victory the University of New England Nor'easters defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference women?s volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium on the Gorham campus. The Nor?easters downed USM 25-10, 25-15 and 25-10. The match was the season-opener for the Nor'easters who begin their 2009 season with a 1-0 mark. Dropping its second straight match in as many games, Southern Maine falls to 0-2. Playing in just its second intercollegiate varsity match since 2006, the Southern Maine received solid contributions from several players in the loss. Sophomore setter Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, Maine) turned in a solid all-around performance with 11 assists, six digs and two service aces. Offensively, senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ispwich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) paced the Huskies with five kills. Shuttle added a team-high 11 digs and three service aces for Southern Maine, while junior libero Samantha Ellis (Westerly, Rhode Island) added eight digs. St. Joseph’s Takes Match From Huskies 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman outside hitter Caitlin Cleary (Scarborough, Maine) had 10 kills while sophomore middle blocker Jordan Pelczar (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) had an outstanding .700 hitting percentage with seven kills in 10 attempts as the St. Joseph’s College Monks swept the University of Southern Maine Huskies to earn a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) win in a non-conference volleyball match Wednesday evening at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham. The match was the season-opener for both squads. St. Joseph’s stands at 1- 0 with the win and the Huskies begin their 2009 campaign at 0-1. It was the first intercollegiate match for the Huskies since the 2006 season. “Although we didn’t come away with a win, the team played well and worked hard,” said first-year head coach Anne Tricomi. “We’ve come away with a lot of positive outcomes from this match and we have identified areas that we need to improve upon. Overall we are headed in the right direction.” Seniors Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) and Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) paced the Huskies attack with six kills each. Sticht added two solo blocks and a block assist and Shuttle had six digs. The Monks received solid defensive efforts from freshmen Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) and Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Kaleigh McHale (Dracut, Mass./Academy of Notre Dame). Netland and Shuttle Named USM Volleyball Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) and Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) have been named co- captains of the 2009 University of Southern Maine Huskies Volleyball team. First-year head coach Anne Tricomi made the announcement this week as the Huskies prepare for their first intercollegiate match since the 2006 season on Wednesday (7 p.m.) against St. Joseph’s College (Maine). Shuttle and Netland will lead the Huskies back into varsity competition after a two-year hiatus in which the Huskies competed as a club sport. “Shannon and Danielle have been leaders on the court during our preseason practices as well as over the past two seasons keeping the team going as a club sport, ” noted Tricomi. “They are passionate about volleyball and are dedicated to making this season a successful. Although our team is small in numbers, with the motivated play and dedication shown by our returning athletes including Shannon, Danielle and Cassi Sticht (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes), we have the enthusiasm and hustle to head in the right direction.” The Huskies, picked to finish eighth in the Little East Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll, have a 22-match schedule for the 2009 season including seven matches in the highly competitive Little East Conference. After their season opening match against St. Joseph’s, the Huskies face nearby rival University of New England on (Sept. 5, 1:00 p.m.) at home. The Huskies have four non- conference matches at Maine Maritime Academy (Sept. 8, 6 p.m.), at home against UMaine Farmington (Sept. 15, 7 p.m.), at Worcester State (Sept. 19, 1 p.m.) and at home against Pine Manor (Sept. 23, 7 p.m.). Southern Maine begins its LEC portion of the schedule at Plymouth State University for conference matches against Plymouth State and Western Connecticut State (Sept. 26, 12 p.m.). USM begins October on the road at the Salem State Invitational (Oct. 3, 10 a.m.) and then hosts UMass Boston (Oct. 8, 6 p.m.) and UMaine Fort Kent (Oct. 9, 6 p.m.). The Huskies are on the road for their next three dates of competition at UMaine Farmington (Oct. 14, 7 p.m.), the Newbury College Tri-Match (Oct. 17, 11 a.m.) and Husson College (Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m.). Beacons Earn Top Billing In Little East Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Boston has been tabbed the favorite to capture the 2009 Little East Conference volleyball championship for the first time in program history after a vote by each of the eight conference coaches determined the annual preseason poll. The Beacons, on the strength of four first-place votes and 59 total points, overtook Keene State College by three markers for the top spot. The following three positions in the coaches’ survey were separated by just four points as Western Connecticut State University (44) edged Plymouth State University (41) and Eastern Connecticut State University (40) for third place. Head Coach Terry Condon guided UMass Boston to its greatest campaign in program history in 2008, establishing a new standard for single-season victories with an overall record of 25-9. The Beacons posted a 5-1 mark in conference action to earn the second seed in the Little East Championship. Condon’s charges made their first appearance in the championship match, dropping a dramatic five- set decision to the host Owls. UMass Boston will welcome back six student- athletes from the 2008 edition, including a pair of major award winners. Senior Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, Calif.), the top offensive player, set a new school record for kills (493) and hitting percentage (.364), while sophomore Cassy Hanneman (Denver, Colo.), the rookie of the year, shattered the mark for assists (1,063). The Beacons travel to California to open the 2009 campaign, when UMass Boston squares off against Pomona-Pitzer in the Pacific Coast Classic on Sept. 4. Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Bob Weiner, Keene State College raised the conference championship trophy for the first time last fall, and represented the Little East in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Owls won at least 25 matches for the third consecutive campaign, setting a new school record with an overall mark of 29-9. Keene State also raised its conference winning streak to 12 matches after sweeping its Little East schedule for the second straight season. The Owls return 11 players from last year’s championship squad, including first-team All-Little East setter Jordan Pokryfki (Wasilla, Alaska). Keene State will take the court at Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 in its season opener. The top six teams in the final regular season standings advance to the 2009 Little East Volleyball Championship Tournament with the top two teams earning the a first round bye. The top seed in the tournament field will host the semifinal and championship rounds from Nov. 6-7. The conference champion will earn the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament. Completing the preseason coaches’ poll in projected order of finish in the final conference standings are University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (22), Rhode Island College (16), and the University of Southern Maine (10).

Tricomi Tabbed To Lead Husky Volleyball
GORHAM, Maine -- After a two-year hiatus from varsity competition the University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s volleyball team will return to action this fall under the direction of first-year head coach Anne Tricomi. Joining the USM Athletic Department in late July, Tricomi has previously served as an assistant coach for a pair of Division III programs, Bowdoin and Colby College, and Division II Bentley College. Most recently, Tricomi led the Portland North Junior Olympic Club in Portland, Maine – an 18-and-under gold level premier Maine-based volleyball team. A former outside and right side hitter for the Colby College Mules, Tricomi was a four-year letter winner and served as the team captain in 2001 as a senior. She earned the team’s 110 % Hustle Award in 1999. Tricomi also has playing experience with the University of Michigan Women’s Club team as well as various teams in the Maine State Volleyball Association. Tricomi earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Classical Civilizations with a minor in Education from Colby in 2002. She received her Master’s degree in Health Behavior from the University of Michigan. Tricomi and the Huskies will open the 2009 season on Wednesday, September 2 (7:00 p.m.) against in-state rival St. Joseph’s College at the Hill Gymnasium. It will mark the Huskies first varsity competition since the 2006 season. ################################################################################
