17 points to lead four players in double figures as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies defeated the Salem State College Vikings 71-60 in a non-conference
game played Tuesday night at the O'Keefe Center.
The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies who improved to 8-1

season-opening Salem State Tip-Off Tournament last month. The Vikings had their
four-game winning streak stopped, and dipped to 5-3 overall.
Trailing 27-19 with 6:02 to play in the first half, the Huskies went on a
13-1 run over the final six minutes to seize a 32-28 lead at the break. Five
different players contributed points, including sophomore guard Meg Cressler
(Appleton, Maine) who hit a three-point shot just before the half to cap the
run.
Southern Maine's lead slowly grew in the second half to as many as 17 (62-
45) before Salem State started to cut away at the deficit, but never seriously
threatened the Huskies control.
Leavitt, coming off a 20-point effort last Saturday at Keene State, hit on
5 of 8 shots from the floor, including 3 of 4 from beyond the three-point
stripe, and made all four of her free throws for her 17 points. Overall, the

Amanda Leavitt (Pittsfield, Maine) each scored 20 points to lead the University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 75-59 victory over the Keene State College Owls

Leading by four (61-57) with 7:07 to play, the Huskies' defense held the

that clinched the win. Junior Jaime Zahm (Montpelier, Vt.), who finished with
10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season,
ignited the run with a basket, followed by a Leavitt basket on the Huskies next
possession.
Leavitt iced the verdict in the final minute, converting 8 of 8 free
throws. The 5-foot-5 guard went 5 of 13 from the floor, including a three-
pointer, and made 9 of 10 charity tosses for her season-high 20 points.
Cressler played a major role in the first half, tossing in 12 of her
career-high 20 points. After Keene's Courtney Clarke (Trenton, N.J.) hit a
three-point shot to pull the Owls within one (30-29) with 2:37 left in the half,
Cressler responded with a long-range shot (4 of 7 from beyond the arc) of her
own to lead a 9-4 run to leave the Huskies up at the break, 39-33.
Keene State led only once in the game when freshman Cathy Mechare (Salls
Village, Conn.) stole the ball and converted a layup for a 2-0 margin. USM
junior Kara Crockett (Glenburn, Maine) put the Huskies in the lead for good the
next trip down the floor, scoring a basket and free throw. Crockett finished

floor and 77 percent (20 of 26) from the line. Keene State, which shot just 28
percent (8 of 29) against the Huskies defense in the second half, hit just 34
percent (19 of 56) its shots for the game.

GORHAM, Maine: Senior guard Niki Dominiczak (Dixfield, Maine) and junior
forwards Kara Crockett (Glenburn, Maine) and Jaime Zahm (Montpelier, VT) have
been named captains of the five-time defending Little East Conference champion
University of Southern Maine women's basketball team for the 2001-02 season.
"I am excited about the selection of Niki, Kara and Jaime as captains,"
said 15th-year head coach Gary Fifield. "Over the years, our program has
benefited tremendously from the guidance provided by our captains, and these
three women should follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and continue
our program's tradition of success."
Dominiczak, Crockett and Zahm are among eight returning letterwinners, who
will be joined by seven new faces, to comprise the 2001-02 edition of Southern
Maine women's basketball. The contingent will look to expand upon the program's
list of impressive accomplishments, which includes six consecutive trips to the
NCAA Tournament, highlighted by appearances in the national championship game in
1998 and 2000. Overall, the club has been to the NCAA Tournament 15 times in the
last 16 years. In league play, the Huskies have captured the tournament crown 12
times in the event's 15-year history.
A two-year starter, Zahm has played a prominent role in the club's recent
success. During the 1999-2000 campaign, she averaged 9.3 points and 9.1 rebounds
per game, and registered career highs of 19 points against Rowan and 17 rebounds
against Plymouth State. She received all-tournament honors at the 2000 NCAA
Tournament Sectional Finals and First Team all-conference honors. Zahm commenced
the 2000-01 campaign in similar fashion, averaging 12.0 points and 6.8 rebounds
through six games, before suffering a season-ending injury in the conference
opener, when she tore the ACL in her right knee.
"By the end of her sophomore year, Jaime had developed into one of the
league's most athletic players," said Fifield. "She is an aggressive rebounder
and scoring threat, runs the floor well in transition, and is capable of
dominating both ends of the court. As disappointed as we were to lose her a year
ago, we are equally ecstatic about her return this year."
The silver lining to Zahm's injury a year ago, was the playing time it
provided for Crockett, who rapidly developed into one of the league's premier
players. A starter in 21 games, she finished third on the team in scoring,
averaging 11.1 points per game, and was second in rebounding with 6.6 caroms per
contest. She registered double figures in points in 16 games and turned in a
career-high 19-point effort at UMass Dartmouth. Crockettt collected double
figures in rebounds four times, including a career-high 16 against Rhode Island
College. She led the team in field goal percentage (.548), connecting on 121-
of-221 attempts, and sank 67 percent of her free throws.
Defensively, she rejected 92 shots, which ranks as the fourth-highest
single-season total in school history, while her average of 3.4 blocked shots
per game ranked sixth in the nation and first in the conference. On two
occasions she blocked nine shots in a single game, one shy of the existing
school record, while her 141 career rejections is sixth on the University's all-
time list.
In recognition of her stellar play, she received second team all-state
honors and was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the LEC Tournament.
"Kara was thrust into a challenging situation and she emerged as one of
the premier post players in New England," said Coach Fifield. "She is a
tremendous rebounder, runs the floor very well and was among the conference's
most dominant players by the end of last year. "
A two-year starter, Dominiczak contributed 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per
game last year, and connected on 54.2 percent (83-of-153) of her field goal
attempts. She enjoyed a memorable performance at UMass Dartmouth when she
established career highs in points (22) and rebounds (13). Overall, she
registered double figures in points on six occasions, while tallying double
figure in rebounds five times.
"Niki is a product of the tradition-rich Dirigo High School program," said
Fifield. "Between Southern Maine and Dirigo, she has won her share of titles,
and is well versed in the dedication and commitment involved in continuing a
successful program."
The trio of Crockett, Dominiczak and Zham will lead the club on a
challenging 25-game, regular-season schedule, which includes 12 home dates and a
full slate of 14 league contests. The Huskies commence the campaign at the two-
game Salem Tip-Off Tournament on Friday-Saturday, November 16-17. Southern Maine
will play the University of Maine Farmington (5:00) in the opening round, and
either host Salem State or MIT (1:00/3:00) in the second round.
Southern Maine will play home games against Bates (5:30) on Nov. 20 and
Bowdoin (5:30) on Nov. 27, before travelling to the University of New England
(5:30) on Nov. 29.
The Huskies will play a pair of home games to begin the month of December,
opening league play against Western Connecticut (1:00) on Dec. 1, and Colby
(5:30) on Dec. 5, before travelling to Keene State (1:00) on Dec. 8, and Salem
State (6:00) on Dec. 11. Southern Maine will close out the calendar year by
hosting the Holiday Tournament on December 29-30, where it will face Westfield
State (3:00) in the opening round and either Husson or Elmira (1:00/3:00) in the
second round.
The month of January consists of games on Jan. 3, at Clark University

Western Connecticut (1:00); Jan. 22, UMass Boston (5:30); Jan. 26, Keene State
(1:00); Jan 30, at St. Joseph's (5:30).
The Huskies close out the regular season with games on Feb. 2, UMass
Dartmouth (1:00); Feb. 5, at Plymouth State (5:30); Feb. 9, at Rhode Island
College (1:00); Feb. 12, at UMass Boston (5:30); and Feb. 16, at Eastern

The Little East Conference tournament, which will involve only the top six
teams, will have two first round games on February 19. The semifinals and finals
will be held at the site of the regular-season champion on February 22-23. The
winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA Division
III Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
