Senior guard Meghan Stetson (Clinton, N.Y.) led three Williams players in double-figures with a team-high 20 points on 7-for-17 shooting. Senior forward Maggie Miller (Wellesley, Mass.) added 17 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals, while senior forward Beth Lorge (North Adams, Mass.) was 5-for-9 from the field to score 10 points. Ahead by as many as 13 in the opening stanza and eight at the break, 35-27, thanks in part to Kent's 13 points, including 3-for-3 shooting from three-point range, Southern Maine found itself in a battle in the latter stages of the second half. Trailing by seven, 60-53, with 5:00 remaining in the contest following a three-ball from Kent, Williams ran off a 7-0 run over the next 3:12 to knot the score at 60-60. Stetson scored six of the Ephs seven points in the run on a lay-up, a mid-range jumper and a pair of free throws. Southern Maine was able to counter, however, as freshman guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) scored all four of her points, a set of free throws and a lay-up in traffic, to spot the Huskies a four-point cushion with 1:01 remaining. Stetson tried to cut into the USM lead with a three-point attempt on Williams' following possession, but Kent grabbed the rebound. Forced to foul, Williams put Kent on the line and she made 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to help USM seal the win. Southern Maine shot 37.5 percent from the field for the game making 21-of- 56 attempts, including 6-for-15 from three-point range (40 percent). Led by Marble and Kent's combined 17-for-21 accuracy from the free throw line, USM shot a solid 71.4 percent (20-for-28) from the charity stripe. USM also held a decisive 46-31 advantage on the boards over the taller Williams' squad led by Marble and senior guard Lindsey Welch's (Newport, Maine/Nokomis Regional) career-high eight caroms. Williams finished the game shooting 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the field. Williams struggled from the free throw line, making just 42.9 percent (6-for-14) of its attempts ################################################################################ Saturday, March 3, 2007
