Thursday, December 3, 1998 Huskies Slip by Nor'easters, 57-51 GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies used a 10-0 spurt to open the second half snapping a 27-27 tie, and went on to defeat the visiting University of New England Nor'easters 57-51 in women's college basketball action Thursday night at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium. Plagued by poor shooting throughout the first half, the Huskies clawed back from a five-point (25-20) deficit over the final three minutes to go to the locker room tied at the intermission. Sophomore guard Erin Shaw (Hancock, Maine/M.D.I.) hit a basket with six seconds left in the half to tie the game. Senior Tracy Libby (Falmouth, Maine) and junior Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) combined for eight of the Huskies' first ten second half points as USM opened a 37-27 lead. The closest UNE would get the rest of the way was five, the last time at 50-45 with 3:27 to play after freshman Lori Kempton (Cumberland, Maine) hit a three-pointer. Libby led the Huskies with 12 points while Plant finished with 11. UNE freshman Amanda Rodgerson (Hampden, Maine) took game-high scoring honors with 13 points before fouling out with 4:22 to play. Sophomore Michele Plant (Gorham, Maine) chipped in with 10. The win improves the Huskies overall record to 3-1 while UNE drops to 1-4.

Tuesday, December 1, 1998 Plant, Libby Lead Huskies Past Polar Bears BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) and senior Tracy Libby (Falmouth, Maine) combined for 49 points to lead the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 78-71 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in non-conference women's college basketball action Tuesday night at Morrell Gymnasium. The win improves the Huskies record to 2-1 on the season while the Polar Bears slipped to 2-2. Libby scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. She scored nine of the Huskies' first ten points to open the second half, and had 17 of her 25 points after the intermission . The spurt allowed the Huskies to open a 10-point lead, and Bowdoin never got closer than three the rest of the way. Plant had a career high 24 points, including making all ten of her free throws. She scored 17 of her 24 points in the first half to help the Huskies take a three-point to the locker room. Bowdoin placed four players in double figures led by sophomore Lauren Myers (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne) with 17 points. Samantha Good (Haverhill, Mass.) had 13 points and four assists while Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) and Jessica Farmer (Longmeadow, Mass.) each had 12.

Saturday, November 21, 1998 Salem State Rallies to Win USM Invitational NYU Takes Third Place with Romp Over UMF AM, Maine -- Senior forwards Tracy Libby and Angela O'Connor, along with junior guard Julie Plant of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team have been named captains for the upcoming 1998-99 season. Head coach Gary Fifield made the announcement. The Huskies open their 1998-99 season hosting the USM Invitational Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday (November 20-21). First round games Friday night match perennial New England region powerhouse Salem State College against New York University, the 1997 NCAA Division III national champion, at 5:30 p.m., and the host Huskies battling the University of Maine Farmington at 7:30 p.m. Libby (Falmouth, Maine/Portland HS) is the Huskies top returning scorer and rebounder. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 12.9 points and 8.7 rebounds in 31 games last season. She also led the Little East Conference in blocked shots with 74. She was an All-Little East first team and All-ECAC third team selection last season, and was named a preseason All-American candidate by Women's DIII News magazine. Plant (Gorham, Maine) was the team's third leading scorer last season averaging 11.8 points in 32 games. She also handed out 161 assists and led the team with 68 steals. The 5-foot-7 guard was an All-Little East first team, second team All-State and third team All-ECAC selection in 1997- 98, and was named a preseason All-American candidate by Women's DIII News. O'Connor (Pittsfield, Mass.) is a fourth-year player who has been a valuable role player during her first three seasons. The 6-foot post player averaged 2.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in 25 games last season. "All three bring very different leadership qualities to the captain's role," said head coach Gary Fifield, who guided the Huskies to a 29-3 mark last season. "Julie is the fierce, competitive floor leader. Tracy is the stabilizing inside presence, and Angela is the experienced, veteran player the younger players seek out for advice." The remainder of the Huskies 1998-99 schedule is as follows: Dec. 1, at Bowdoin; Dec. 3, University of New England; Dec. 5, UMass Dartmouth; Dec. 9, at Colby; and Dec. 12, at Eastern Connecticut. Also Jan. 2-3, at Middlebury Tournament; Jan. 6, Clark; Jan. 9, Western Connecticut.; Jan. 12, at Rhode Island College; Jan. 16, at Keene State; Jan. 19, Plymouth State; Jan. 21, at Bates; Jan. 23, at UMass Dartmouth; Jan. 26, UMass Boston; and Jan. 30, Eastern Connecticut. Feb. 3, St. Joseph's (ME); Feb. 6, at Western Connecticut; Feb. 9, at Plymouth State; Feb. 13, Rhode Island College; Feb. 16, at UMass Boston; and Feb. 20, Keene State. Dates for the Little East Conference Tournament are first round games at four on-campus sites on February 23, followed by the semifinals and finals February 26-27 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Friday, November 13, 1998 Huskies Stomp St. Francis Xavier GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Julie Plant scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies beat up on the St. Francis Xavier X-Women, 87-47, in a women's college basketball exhibition game at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium Friday night. The Huskies open their 1998-99 regular season next Friday and Saturday (November 20-21) when they host the USM Invitational Tournament at the Hill Gym. Friday's first round match-ups have Salem State College playing New York University at 5:30 followed by USM battling the University of Maine Farmington. The Huskies shot a blistering 64.5 percent in the first half as they raced to a 49-14 lead at the intermission. St. Francis Xavier showed the signs of playing its third game in three nights committing 19 turnovers and shooting just 21 percent (4 for 19) in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore forward Jessica Hopkins was perfect from the floor hitting all seven of her shots on the way to 14 points. Senior forward Tracy Libby and sophomore guard Erin Shaw each had 10 points. For the game, 12 of USM's 14 players that saw action scored.

Wednesday, November 11, 1998 Huskies to Host St. Francis Xavier in Women's Basketball Exhibition Game GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team opens its 1998-99 season this Friday (November 13) night when it hosts the touring St. Francis Xavier University X-Women of Antigonash, Nova Scotia in an exhibition game at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on the Gorham campus. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The Huskies return 11 players from last season's 29-3 club the won the Little East Conference regular season and tournament championships, and reached the championship game of the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Tickets for the game are $4 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens, and children 6 and under are free. USM students with a university id card receive free admission. The USM Student-Athlete Advisory Council is conducting a food drive prior to the game. Any adult bringing a non-perishable food item for the food drive can purchase a ticket for $1, and any student or senior citizen bringing a food item will be admitted free. The Huskies begin their 1998-99 regular season the following weekend (Friday and Saturday, November 20-21) when they host the USM Invitational Tournament. First round games feature Salem State College against New York University, the 1997 NCAA champion, at 5:30, followed by Southern Maine playing the University of Maine Farmington at 7:30.
