Southern Maine Women Finish 23rd at New England Regional
CUMBERLAND, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Women's cross country
team placed 23rd among 41 teams at the 2004 NCAA Division III New England Regional
Championships, Saturday at the Twin Brook Recreational Center in Cumberland,
Maine.
Led by senior harrier Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vermont/Hartford), the Huskies
totaled 680 points. Marzouk finished 76th out of 281 runners in a time of
24:18.14 on the 6,000-meter course.
Following Marzouk at the finish line were junior Alora Johnson (Topsham,
Maine/Mt. Ararat), seniors Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), Colleen
Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic) and Kate Richardson (Lancaster, N.H./White
Mountain Regional). Johnson finished 131st in 25:25.6, while Davis raced to a
144th-place finish in 25:45.3, and Dolbec placed 164th in 26:17.7. Richardson
closely followed Dolbec in a time of 26:20.4 to finish 165th.
Defending national champion Middlebury College placed first overall as the
Panthers' top four runners placed second, fourth, 11th and 18th. Senior Jess
Manzer's (Palantine Bridge, N.Y.) second place finish in a time of 21:34.5 led
Middlebury. Sophomore Andrea Giddings (South Portland, Maine) placed 11th overall
in a time of 22:18.7.
Junior Caroline Cretti (Carbondale, Colo.) paced Williams to a second place
team finish earning her third consecutive NCAA Division III New England Regional
title, placing first in a time of 21:27.4. Cretti, a junior, ran the course at an
astonishing 5:46 per mile pace.
Colby College place third overall, followed by fourth place Amherst College.
Middlebury earns the region's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National
Championship race held next weekend in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Williams, Colby,
Amherst and Wesleyan University will join Middlebury representing the New England
region as each team earned qualifying team status by finishing in the top five.

Marzouk Paces Southern Maine Harriers at New England Alliance Championship
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Sara. Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford HS) of
the University of Maine women's cross country team placed sixth overall at the
2004 New England Alliance Championship held Saturday afternoon at the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Marzouk's sixth place finish in a time of 19:08 over the 5,000-meter course
led the Huskies to a second place team finish. Southern Maine finished behind
Keene State College.
Junior Alora Johnson (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) placed 14th in a time of
20:09, while senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) was 19th overall
with her time of 20:36. Marzouk, Johnson and Davis each earned All-New England
Alliance honors by placing in the top 20 out of a field of 87 finishers.
Keene State took the team title with 24 points while the Huskies edged
Westfield State College, 73-79, for the second spot.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday, November 13 at the NCAA New
England Regional at the Twin Brook Recreational Center in Cumberland, Maine. Race
time is 12 p.m.

Huskies Place Fourth at State Championship
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's cross
country team finished fourth among eight teams competing in the annual State of
Maine Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday afternoon at the Twin Brook
Recreation Complex in Cumberland, Maine.
Leading the Huskies was senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt.) who finished 19th
overall. Finishing times were not available. Senior Lindsay Davis (North
Berwick, Maine) was the second USM finisher in 27th place followed by junior Alora
Johnson (Topsham, Maine) in 39th place and senior Colleen Dolbec (Shapleigh,
Maine) in 53rd place.
The individual winner was Jessica Minty of Colby College. Colby captured the
team title with 24 points, followed by Bowdoin College with 49 points, Bates
College with 57 points and Southern Maine with 133 points.
The Huskies will take next weekend off and prepare the Little East Conference
and New England Alliance Championship race to be held October 30 at the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Marzouk Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford HS) of the
Southern Maine University women's cross country team has been selected as the
Runner of the Week by the Little East Conference.
Marzouk placed first overall at the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol,
R.I., with a time of 20:05 for the 5,000-meter race. She helped the Huskies to a
second place finish in the meet as the team scored 82 points. Roger Williams
University won the event with a total of 24 points. The win marked the first in
Marzouk's career.

Huskies Take Second at Roger Williams Invitational
BRISTOL, R.I. -- Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford HS) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies was the individual winner of the women's race
at the Roger Williams Invitational held Saturday at Colt State Park in Bristol,
R.I.
Marzouk covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:05 to take the top
spot by six seconds over Allison Belanger of Roger Williams. It is the first
cross country race victory for Marzouk.
Senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble HS) was the second USM
runner across the line, finishing ninth overall with a time of 21:06. Junior
Alora Johnson (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) placed 12th with her time of 21:14.
Rounding out the Huskies five scoring runners were senior Colleen Dolbec
(Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic HS) in 21st place (21:48) and junior Melissa Patten
(Bucksport, Maine) in 48th spot (23:02).
Roger Williams captured the team title with 24 points by placing its five
scoring runners among the first seven finishers. Southern Maine edge out the
University of New England, 82-85, for the second spot in the 14-team field. Clark
University, with 118 points, and Emerson College, with 159 points, round out the
top five teams.
USM will run in the State of Maine meet next Saturday (October 16) at the
Twin Brook Recreation Complex in Cumberland, Maine, the site for this year's NCAA
New England Regional Cross Country Championship on November 13.

Huskies Tie for 2nd at UMF Invitational
FARMINGTON, Maine -- Senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble HS)
placed eighth among 61 finishers to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies
women's cross country team to a share of second place Saturday morning at the
University of Maine at Farmington Invitational.
Davis covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 21:45.90. The second USM
runner to cross the line was junior Alora Johnson (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS)
in 16th place overall with a time of 22:31.52. Senior Kate Richardson (Lancaster,
N.H./White Mountain Regional HS) came home in 18th place in a time of 22:42.29.
Senior Colleen Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic HS) took 20th place with a
time of 22:49.07, and freshman Elizabeth Trask (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook HS) was
the fifth Husky across the line in 34th place with a time of 24:17.84.
Bowdoin College standout Audra Caler was the individual winner with a time of
20:22.85. The Polar Bears placed five runners among the top six to take the team
title with 17 points. USM and the University of New England tied for second with
82 points.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Rhode
Island to compete in the Roger Williams University Invitational.

Huskies Finish 12th at Harrier Classic
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble HS) was
the first University of Southern Maine runner across the line as the Huskies
finished 12th among 14 teams competing in the M.I.T. Harrier Classic held Saturday
at Franklin Park in Boston.
Davis covered the 5,017-meter course in a time of 21:26.3 to finish 61st
(52nd in team scoring) among the 161 finishers. She was followed by junior Alora
Johnson (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) in 67th place overall with a time of
21:39.0.
Rounding out the Huskies' top five finishers were senior Kate Richardson
(Lancaster, N.H./White Mountain Regional HS) in 79th place with her time of
22:09.5, senior Colleen Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic HS) in 102nd place
with a time of 22:51.4, and junior Melissa Patten (Bucksport, Maine) in 112th
place with a time of 23:25.7.
The Greater Boston Track Club, paced by individual winner Emily Raymond
(18:44.3), won the team title with 25 points to easily outdistance second place
Bates College which had 80 points. Smith College, the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and Phillips Exeter Academy round out the top five teams. Southern
Maine finished with 319 points.
The Huskies hit the trails next when they travel to Farmington, Maine, on
Saturday for the University of Maine at Farmington Invitational.

USM Huskies 18th at UMass Dartmouth Invitational
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford HS)
was the first University of Southern Maine runner to cross the finish line as
the Huskies placed 18th among the 33 teams competing at the UMass Dartmouth
Shriners Cross Country Invitational held Saturday.
Marzouk toured the 5,000-meter UMD course in a time of 20:30 to finish
70th overall among 258 competitors who completed the race.
Senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble HS) was the second USM
runner across the line with her time of 21:03, good for 99th place. Rounding
out USM's top five were junior Alora Johnson (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) in
128th position (21:31), senior Colleen Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic HS)
in 159th place, and junior Kate Richardson (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountain
Regional HS) in 162nd place.
Naja Ferjan of Division One Brown University was the individual winner
with her time of 18:21. Ferjan was the first of five Brown runners who placed
in the top ten.
Brown easily won the team title with 27 points. Amherst College took
second with 63 points, followed by Colby College with 106 points, Trinity
College with 143 points and Bates College with 148 points. Southern Maine was
18th with 569 points.
The Huskies return to action next Saturday (September 25) when they travel
to Boston to run in the Harrier Classic at Franklin Park.
