NCAA New England Regional Championships
Southern Maine Finishes 19th at NCAA Regional
CUMBERLAND, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross
country team completed its 2009 season Saturday with a 19th place finish among
the 47 teams competing at the NCAA New England Regional Championships held in
rainy conditions at the Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine.
The Huskies finished with 598 points en route to their second straight top
20 finish. MIT and Middlebury College tied for the team title with 63 points
apiece, and earned the region's two automatic berths into next weekend's NCAA
National Championship race in Cleveland, Ohio. Williams College was third with
99 points, followed by Amherst College with 116 and Wesleyan University with
159.
Leading the Huskies was junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) who finished
47th among the 315 finishers, covering the 6,000-meter course in a time of 23
minutes, 9.2 seconds. Dion improved 60 positions over her 2008 finish.
Junior Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/MDI) was the second USM finisher
coming across the line in 128th place with a time of 25:01.5. Senior captain
Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was next in 129th position with
her time of 25:01.9. Junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) was four spots
behind Myrick in 133rd with her time of 25:07.5. Freshman Brooke Madden
(Dedham, Maine/Brewer) completed USM's five scoring runners coming in 152nd with
her time of 25:24.9.
Jacqui Wentz (Santa Rosa, Calif.) of MIT was the individual winner,
completing the course in 21:35.7. Ravenna Neville (Westfield, N.J.) of Wesleyan
was second (21:39.9). Rounding out the top five individuals were Maria Monks
(Hazelton, Penn.) of MIT (21.44.9), Addie Tousley (Kensington, Md.) of
Middlebury (21:54.6) and Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) of Westfield State College
(21:58.3).
At-large team and individual berths are scheduled to be announced by the
NCAA on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Foley Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the fifth time this season, University of Southern
Maine freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) has been named the Little East
Conference women's cross country Rookie of the Week. The conference office
recognized Foley for her outstanding performance this past weekend at the New
England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships held at Keene State
College.
At the New England Alliance and LEC championships, Foley was the highest
placing freshman among the 126 finishers coming home in eighth place overall
(seventh place in LEC scoring). She covered the 5,000-meter course in 20
minutes, 7 seconds. For her efforts, Foley received All-Little East Conference
(top seven) and All-Alliance (top 20) honors.
Foley previously received LEC Rookie of the Week accolades on September 14,
October 5, October 12 and October 20.
Southern Maine was a strong second among the 13 teams competing for the
Alliance title, and second among the six Little East Conference squads. The
Alliance scoring features teams from the LEC and the Massachusetts State College
Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
Keene State won both team titles, taking the Alliance crown with 25 points,
followed by USM with 59 points. Westfield State College was third with 81
points. Keene won the LEC championship for the 10th consecutive year scoring 20

Senior Kerry Arouca of Westfield State was the overall winner in 18:41.

Huskies Take Second at LEC/Alliance Championships
KEENE, N.H. -- Paced by the sixth place overall finish of junior Carly
Dion (Biddeford, Maine), the University of Southern Maine women's cross country
team finished second Saturday at the New England Alliance and Little East
Conference Championships. The event was staged at Keene State College.
Southern Maine was a strong second among the 13 teams competing for the
Alliance title, and second among the six Little East Conference squads. The
Alliance scoring features teams from the LEC and the Massachusetts State College
Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
Keene State won both titles, taking the Alliance crown with 25 points,
followed by USM with 59 points. Westfield State College was third with 81
points. Keene won the LEC championship for the 10th consecutive year scoring 20
points, followed by USM with 44. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth was
third with 94 points.
Dion covered the 5,000-meter KSC course in 19 minutes, 41 seconds.
Freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) followed two places further back in a time
of 20:07. Foley was the first freshman runner across the line. Junior Erin
Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge,
Vt./Middlebury Union) came home in 12th and 13th places, respectively, with
times of 20:22 and 20:23. Freshman Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) was the
fifth scoring USM runner in 20th position with her time of 20:56.
Also running well for the Huskies were juniors Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine,
Maine/MDI) who placed 24th in 21:04 and Tiffany Binette (Biddeford, Maine) who
was 30th in 21:25.
Southern Maine's top five finishers in the Alliance race earned All-
Alliance honors. Dion and Foley also picked up All-Little East accolades for
finishing in the top seven in the LEC results.
Senior Kerry Arouca of Westfield State was the overall winner in 18:41.
Junior Allison Chamberlain (Scarborough, Maine) of Keene State was second in
18:47.
The Huskies will travel to Williamstown, Mass., next Saturday to run in the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship.

Dion, Foley Sweep LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross country
team swept this week's Little East Conference awards that were announced Tuesday
afternoon.
Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was selected as the Runner of the Week
and freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) was picked as the Rookie of the Week.
This is the second occasion this season that Dion has been tabbed as the
Runner of the Week. She previously was cited on September 14. The citation is
the fourth of the season, and the third straight week, for Foley. Each was
recognized for her performance at the State of Maine Intercollegiate
Championship held last Saturday at Colby College.
Dion was the first USM runner across the line finishing in 12th place after
covering the hilly, 5,000-meter course in a time of 19 minutes, 57.2 seconds.
Foley continued her impressive rookie season placing 13th with a time of
20:10.4. She was second among first-year runners in the race.
Host Colby College took the team title on the strength of a 1-2-3 finish
with 32 points. Bowdoin College was second with 44 points, followed by Bates
College with 62 points and USM with 93.
Southern Maine will be off this weekend before preparing for the Little
East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being staged at Keene
State College on October 31.

Southern Maine Finishes Fourth at State Championship
WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross
country team posted a solid fourth place result Saturday at the annual State of
Maine Championship held at Colby College.
Host Colby College took the team title on the strength of a 1-2-3 finish
with 32 points. Bowdoin College was second with 44 points, followed by Bates
College with 62 points and USM with 93.
Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was the first USM runner across the
line finishing 12th with her time of 19:57.2. Freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor,
Maine) continued her impressive rookie season placing 13th with a time of
20:10.4, followed closely by junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) in 14th place
tripping the timer in 20:11.2. Foley was second among first-year runners.
Senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) came home in
22nd position with a time of 20:34.0, and freshman Brooke Madden (Dedham,
Maine/Brewer) was the fifth scoring runner. Madden placed 42nd overall (32nd in
team scoring) with a time of 21:06.4.
Juniors Tiffany Binette (Biddeford, Maine) and Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine,
Maine/MDI) also ran well finishing 55th and 61st respectively. Binette had a
time of 21:46.4 and Raynor covered the hilly 5,000-meter course in 21:54.7.
Senior Katrina Gravel paced Colby's 1-2-3 finish winning the individual
title in a time of 18:59.5.
Southern Maine will be off next weekend before preparing for the Little
East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being staged at Keene
State College on October 31.

Foley Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this season, the Little East
Conference announced today that freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine women's cross country team has been selected as the
conference Rookie of the Week.
Foley, who previously won the weekly honor on September 14 and for a second
time last week, was recognized for her performance in helping the Huskies
capture the team title at the James Earley Invitational meet hosted by Westfield
State College. Foley was the second USM runner across the line, placing 10th
overall, after covering the 5,000-meter Stanley Park course in 20 minutes, 8.49
seconds. She paced a trio of USM runners to 10th-11th-12th place finishes,
respectively.
The Huskies, led by junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) and Foley,
captured the team title with 58 points to outdistance host Westfield State by 30
points. The vastly improved Huskies have won two meets this fall, and finished
second in a third.
Southern Maine will travel to Waterville, Maine, this Saturday (11:00 a.m.)
to run in the State of Maine Championship being hosted at Colby College.

Southern Maine Wins James Earley Invitational
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) finished second
among the 266 runners Saturday as the University of Southern Maine women's cross
country won the team title at the 2009 James Earley Invitational hosted by
Westfield State College.
Dion was the first USM finisher, covering the 5,000-meter Stanley Park
course in a time of 19 minutes, 23.92 seconds.
Southern Maine took the team title among the 25 competing teams with 58
points. Host Westfield State was in the runner-up spot with 88 points. Trinity
College (116 points), Roger Williams University (143) and Bridgewater State
College (149) round out the top five. Westfield State senior Kerry Arouca was
the individual winner with a time of 18:57.49. The vastly improved Huskies have
finished first or second in three of four meets this season.
The key to the Huskies' victory was the pack running of freshman Jennie
Foley (Bangor, Maine), senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury
Union) and junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) who came across the line in
10th, 11th and 12th place. Freshman Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) was
the fifth scoring runner crossing the line in 24th place overall (23rd in team
scoring).
Foley, this week's Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, finished in a
time of 20:08.49. Myrick was right behind in 20:11.21, and Garvey was another
step back in 20:11.62. Madden closed strong picking off a number of places and
tripping the timer in 20:47.36.
Juniors Tiffany Binette (Biddeford, Maine) and Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine,
Maine/Mount Desert Island) also ran well. Binette was the sixth USM finisher in
44th place (21:19:62) and Raynor was next in 50th place (21:28.86).
The Huskies will travel to Colby College in Waterville, Maine, next
Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to participate in the State of Maine Championship.

Jennie Foley Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) of the University
of Southern Maine women's cross country team has been selected as the Little
East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of September 28 through October
4. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, made the
announcement Monday afternoon.
Foley paced the vastly improved Huskies to a second place finish among the
27 teams competing at the Pop Crowell Cross Country Invitational held at Gordon
College. The first-year runner crossed the line second overall in a time of 18
minutes, 59 seconds, just four seconds behind race winner Randelle Boots of
Wellesley College. Led by Foley, USM placed five runners among the first 30
finishers.
In three races this fall, Foley has been among the Huskies' first three
finishers. She was third overall at the University of New England Invitational
helping USM to a 1-2-3 finish and the team title, and was the third USM runner
across the line at the McGill University Open Invitational.
This is the second time this season that Foley has been named LEC Rookie
of the Week. She previously received the honor on September 14 for her
performance at the UNE Invitational.
The Huskies will travel on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to Westfield State
College for the James Earley Invitational.

Huskies Take Second at Pop Crowell Invitational
WENHAM, Mass. -- Paced by freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) and
junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine), the University of Southern Maine women's
cross country team finished a strong second Saturday at the 2009 Pop Crowell
Cross Country Invitational hosted by Gordon College.
A distant seventh (262 points) a year ago at the Pop Crowell, the vastly-
improved Huskies placed five runners inside the top 30 to take the runner-up
spot behind Wellesley College. Wellesley, led by race winner Randelle Boots,
compiled 38 points with Southern Maine tallying 65. Third place went to Salve
Regina University with 151 points.
Foley covered the Gordon College course in 18 minutes, 59 seconds to finish
only four seconds behind Boots. Dion crossed the line in 19:07.
Senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was the third
USM finisher coming home in 11th place with her time of 19:53. Junior Erin
Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) finished 18th in a time of 20:08, and rookie Brooke
Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) came in 30th tripping the timer at 20:32. All
three improved their eventual finishing position over the second half of the
race.
Junior Tiffany Binette (Biddeford, Maine) finished in 39th place with her
time of 20:50, and junior Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island)
was 46th in a time of 21:03.
The Huskies will travel on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to Westfield State College
to compete in the James Earley Invitational.

Southern Maine Sixth at McGill University Invitational
MONTREAL -- Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) finished in 27th place
overall to pace the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team to a
sixth place result among 15 teams competing at the 2009 McGill University Open
Saturday in Montreal.
Dion covered the 4,000-meter Mount Royal Park course in a time of 15
minutes, 50 seconds to be the first USM runner across the finish line.
Junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) was the second USM finisher coming
across the line in 38th place overall with a time of 16:02. Freshman Jennie
Foley (Bangor, Maine) placed 45th overall in 16:18, and senior captain Sarah
Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was 47th in 16:23. Freshman Brooke
Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) was USM's fifth scoring runner in 62nd place
overall with her time of 17:02.
Southern Maine tallied 159 points (22-28-32-34-43), just four points behind
fifth place University of Sherbrooke. The University of Western Ontario took
the team title with 30 points, followed by Queen's University with 55 points,
and host McGill with 87.
Manon Letourneau of Universite Laval was the individual winner. Letourneau
was the only runner to break the 15-minute barrier, crossing the line in 14:57.
Southern Maine will be off next weekend, then return to action on October 3
when it competes in the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College.

USM Sweeps LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman Jennie
Foley (Bangor, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's cross country
team have swept the first weekly Little East Conference awards announced today.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
that Dion had been selected as the Runner of the Week and Foley was tabbed as
the Rookie of the Week in recognition of their performances at the University of
New England Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday.
Dion covered the 5,000-meter Rotary Park (Biddeford, Maine) course in a
time of 20 minutes, 9 seconds to won her first collegiate cross country event.
Dion's time was one minute, 17 seconds faster than her third-place time last
year.
Competing in her first collegiate race, Foley was a pleasant surprise
according to veteran head coach George Towle, finishing third with a time of
20:30.
Dion, senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) and
Foley captured the first three positions for the Huskies en route to a team
score of 21 points. Junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) placed fifth in
20:55, and rookie Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer HS) was tenth in 21:43.
The Huskies easily outdistanced the University of New England which took runner-
up honors among the six teams competing with 44 points.
Southern Maine will journey north of the border this weekend to participate
in the McGill University Invitational in Montreal, Quebec, on Saturday.

Huskies Take Top Team Honors at UNE Invitational
Dion, Myrick and Foley Sweep First Three Positions
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross
country team swept the first three spots, and took five of the first 10, en
route to winning the University of New England Cross Country Invitational for
the second straight year on Saturday.
Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) led a 1-2-3 finish by the Huskies,
covering the 5,000-meter Rotary Park course in 20 minutes, 9 seconds. The win
was the first of her collegiate career. Dion's time was 1:17 faster than her
third place time last year.
Senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) came home
second with her time of 20:29. Freshman Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine), running
in her first collegiate event, was third in 20:30.
Rounding out USM's five scoring runners were junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill,
Mass.) who was fifth in 20:55, and freshman Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer)
who finished 10th in 21.43.
Southern Maine took the team title scoring 21 points. Host UNE took second
place in the six team field with 44 points.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday (10:30 a.m.) when they travel to
Montreal, Quebec, to participate in the McGill University Open Cross Country
Meet.
