Karen Jamnik Named to ECAC Division III Women's All-Rookie Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) of
the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team has been named to the
2000-2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's Ice
Hockey All-Rookie team, following voting by the league's head coaches.
The all-star first and second teams, the all-rookie team and individual
award winners were announced Thursday afternoon by the ECAC office in
Centerville, Mass.
This is the second straight year that the Huskies have placed a player on
the six-member All-Rookie team. Jamnik joins forward Holly Manning (Northfield,
Vt.) on the list of USM players to earn All-Rookie team honors.
Joining Jamnik on the All-Rookie team were Williams College dynamic
forwards Molly Wasserman and Victoria Scott, forward Caitlin Hornyak of Colgate
University, defenseman Rhiannon Amor of Sacred Heart University and defenseman
Lindsey Neilson of the University of Vermont.
Jamnik, who joined the Huskies program in January, compiled a 1.02 goals
against average, a .958 save percentage and an 8-3-1 record with four shutouts
in ECAC Division III league games during the regular season. Overall, she had a
1.07 goals against average, a .955 save percentage and a 9-4-1 record.
During the season, including last weekend's first round of the playoffs,
Jamnik was named the Division III Goalie of the Week (January 29-February 4) and
Division III Rookie of the Week (February 5-11) once each, and to the Division
III weekly honor roll five times.
"Karen was a welcome addition to our team this season," said first-year
head coach David Venditti. "She is a consistent, fundamentally sound goalie who
gave (our team) the confidence to play our game at the highest level. She's
very deserving of this honor."
The Huskies finished the most successful season in their three-year
history with a 15-6-2 overall record. USM, seeded fifth, was knocked out of the
single-elimination playoffs in the first round by Manhattanville College, 2-1,
last Saturday.

Notes: This is the first tournament berth for both squads. Manhattanville, in
its second varsity season, comes in riding a four-game winning streak, and is 9-
1-2 in its last 12 games. The Valiants were the second highest scoring team in
the regular season, averaging 5.22 goal a game. They were tied with USM for
fourth in scoring defense (1.17 goals allowed per game). Southern Maine was 2-
2-0 in its last four games following a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1). The
Huskies were eighth in scoring (2.78 goals per). Special teams could be
crucial. Manhattanville was second in power play percentage (19 of 77, 24.7%)
and tied for eighth in penalty killing (61 of 68, 89%). The Huskies power play
has struggled of late, and finished 12th (5 for 49, 10.2%) among the 18 teams in
the league. USM was tied for fifth in penalty killing (60 of 66, 90.9%).

Huskies Whitewash Skating Dutchwomen 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.)
stopped all 12 shots she faced and three different players scored goals as the
University of Southern Maine Huskies shut out the Union College Skating
Dutchwomen, 3-0, in the ECAC Women's Division III regular season finale for both
teams Sunday at the USM Ice Arena.
Southern Maine finished the season 15-5-2 overall and 13-4-1 in ECAC play.
The Huskies will advanced to the eight-team ECAC tournament that begins next
weekend. The opponent, game site and time will be announced Monday. Union
concluded its season 3-19-2 overall and 1-15-2 in league play.
The Huskies got the first goal of the game midway through the second
period when junior Karen Harrison (Lakewood, Calif.) flipped the rebound of her
own shot over Union rookie goalie Victoria Elkins (Bernardston, N.J.) at 11:05
for a short-handed goal. Sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) picked up
the only assist on the play. The goal was Harrison's second of the season.
Southern Maine added a pair of insurance goals 51 seconds apart in the
third period to ice the game away. Sophomore Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.)
banged home her ninth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Patricia
Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) at 5:15. Senior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.) lit the
lamp at 6:06, set up by Rudnicki and sophomore Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.),
for her third goal of the season.
Elkins was busy all afternoon making 35 saves for the Skating Dutchwomen.
The shutout was Jamnik's fourth of the season. Southern Maine had a 38-12 edge
in shots on goal in the game.

Murphy, Red Raiders Slip Past Huskies, 3-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Heather Murphy's (St. Paul, Minn.) second goal
of the game at 8:15 of the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and gave the visiting
Colgate University Red Raiders a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's Division III game Saturday night at the USM Ice
Arena.
The win extended the Red Raiders unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).
Colgate, ranked eighth in this week's USCHO.com Division III poll, is 13-7-3
overall and 10-4-3 in ECAC play heading into Sunday's regular season finale at
M.I.T.
Southern Maine, ranked ninth in the nation, dropped to 14-5-2 overall and
12-4-1 in league play. The Huskies will host Union College on Sunday at 3:00
p.m.
Tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of play, the Red Raiders took a 2-1 lead when
Murphy's shot from the left point through a screen alluded USM rookie goalie
Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) for a power-play goal at 2:59.
USM got the equalizer at 7:03 as sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn,
Maine) stole the puck at the blue line and beat Colgate sophomore goalie Jen
Burtraw (Branford, Conn.) with a shot that went in off Burtraw's glove for her
ninth goal of the season.
Murphy scored what proved to be the game winner 72 seconds later as junior Annie
Stover (Peapack, N.J.) forced a turnover deep in the Huskies zone and Murphy
one-timed a shot past Jamnik for her 19th goal of the season.
USM pulled Jamnik in the final minute in favor of the extra attacker, but
was unable to get a shot past Burtraw.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Stover put the Red Raiders
ahead at 5:20 with her fifth goal of the season. Southern Maine got the
equalizer nine minutes later as Rudnicki banged in the rebound of her own shot.
Burtraw finished the game with 16 saves. Jamnik stopped 29 shots for the
Huskies.

USM's Karen Jamnik Named ECAC Division III Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, MAINE -- University of Southern Maine freshman goalie Karen
Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) has been named the ECAC Division III Women's Rookie of
the Week for her outstanding play during the week of February 5-11. The
announcement was made the ECAC office Tuesday afternoon.
This is Jamnik's fifth ECAC citation since joining the Huskies at mid-
year. She has been named to the weekly honor three times, and was the Goalie of
the Week for the week of January 29-February 4.
In two games last weekend against Manhattanville College and Sacred Heart
University, Jamnik compiled a 1.50 goals against average and stopped 66 of 69
shots. She made 37 saves in the Huskies loss to Manhattanville, then came back
the next afternoon to stop 29 shots in USM's 1-0 win over Sacred Heart.
For the season, Jamnik has a 0.88 goals against average, a .963 save
percentage and an 8-2-1 record. She ranks in the top three among conference
goalies in all three categories, including leading the conference in save
percentage.
The Huskies, 14-4-2 overall and 12-3-1 in ECAC Division III play, conclude
the regular season this weekend hosting Colgate University on Saturday night
(7:00 p.m.) and Union College on Sunday (3:00 p.m.). The first round of the
playoffs will next weekend. Pairings, sites and game times will be announced
Monday (February 19).

Fulton, Jamnik Lead Huskies Past Pioneers, 1-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) scored her sixth goal
of the season with 3:59 to play in regulation to break a scoreless tie and give
the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-0 victory over the Sacred Heart
University Pioneers in an ECAC Women's Division III game played Sunday afternoon
at the USM Ice Arena.
Fulton picked up a pass from sophomore defender Stephanie Slater (Acton, Mass.),
carried through the right wing circle and beat SHU sophomore goalie Kim Derleth
(Tomahawk, Wis.) with a 20-foot wrist shot to the short side for the only goal
of the game.
USM freshman goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) held the Pioneers off
the scoreboard, making 29 saves for her third shutout of the season.
Derleth made 19 saves before being lifted with 1:08 to play in favor of
the extra attacker. The Pioneers got the added benefit of going on the power
play with 53.5 seconds to play, but could not get the equalizer past Jamnik to
force the game into overtime.
The teams played a fairly even first period with putting eight shots on
goal. The Pioneers had an edge in play in the middle period, out-shooting the
Huskies 12-5 in the period. Both teams had good scoring chances, but Jamnik and
Derleth were equal to the task.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 14-4-2 overall and 12-3-1 in ECAC
play. Sacred Heart, which snapped a three-game losing skid Saturday by beating
M.I.T., slipped to 10-9-2 overall and 8-6-2 in ECAC.
Southern Maine closes out the regular season next weekend hosting Colgate
University on Saturday night (7:00 p.m.) and Union College Sunday afternoon
(3:00 p.m.). Sacred Heart will host Hamilton College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.)
and R.I.T. on Sunday (3:00 p.m.).

Kirnan, Valiants Snap Huskies Unbeaten Streak
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Renee Kirnan (Dewitt, N.Y.) notched
her third shutout of the season, stopping 20 shots, to lead the Manhattanville
College Valiants (12-5-2) to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine
Huskies (13-4-2) in a battle of nationally-ranked ECAC Division III women's
teams Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The loss snapped the Huskies' 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1), and dropped
the tenth-ranked Huskies 11-3-1 in conference play and 13-4-2 overall. The
eighth-ranked Valiants improved to 10-3-2 in the conference and 12-5-2 overall.
Sophomore forward Kristen Sahlem (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored what proved to
be the game winner at the 5:55 mark of the first period. It was Sahlem's 12th
goal of the season. She was assisted by sophomore forward Lindsey Paulsrud
(Wilmette, Ill.). Ten minutes later, the Valiants extended their lead to 2-0
when freshman forward Emily Duer (Euclid, Ohio) scored her seventh goal of the
season on a pass from freshman forward Amanda Zimecki (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
The second period saw more penalties than goals with neither team able to
capitalize on power-play chances. Freshman forward Melanie Grover (South
Jordan, Utah) finally lit the lamp, scoring a power-play goal for the Valiants
at 16:50. The Huskies went 0-4 in the period on the power play.
Neither team could find the back of the net during the final period.
Manhattanville out-shot Southern Maine 40-20 for the game.
Southern Maine's freshman goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.)
recorded 37 saves in the loss.
Southern Maine returns to action Sunday afternoon when the Huskies host Sacred
Heart University at 3:00 p.m.. Manhattanville plays tomorrow at M.I.T.

Huskies Extend Unbeaten Streak to Nine, Defeat Hamilton 3-1
CLINTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) had a goal
and an assist and freshman goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) kicked out 27
shots as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team
extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 3-1 win over the Hamilton
College Continentals in an ECAC Women's Division III game Sunday afternoon.
The win gave USM a sweep of its weekend trip to R.I.T. and Hamilton, and
vaulted the Huskies past Williams College into third place with four games to
play in the regular season. USM is 13-3-2 overall and 11-2-1 in ECAC play.
Hamilton dropped its fifth game in the last six to fall to 8-9-0 overall and
6-8-0 in league play.
Manning scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season off a feed from
junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) at 5:48 of the first period to give USM a 1-0
lead.
Sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine) got what proved to be
the game winner when she lit the lamp with a power-play goal at 18:26 of the
middle period. Fulton and Manning drew the assists on the play. The goal was
Rideout's fourth of the campaign.
Jamnik, who stopped 27 shots in the contest, saw her bid for her second
straight shutout, and third of the season, erased at 18:06 of the third period
when sophomore Paula Dady (Wallingford, Conn.) netted her 20th goal of the
season while the Continentals enjoyed their ninth power play of the game.
Hamilton pulled senior goalie Andrea Cecchinato (Thomaston, Conn.) in the
final minute trying to get the equalizer, but USM sophomore Amy Matuewezski
(Woonsocket, R.I.) found the empty net at 19:30 for her eight goal of the
season. Sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) got the only assist.
Cecchinato finished the game with 14 saves as Hamilton outshot Southern
Maine, 28-17. Hamilton converted just one of nine power-play opportunities
while USM was one for three.
Southern Maine returns home next weekend to host Manhattanville College
(Saturday, 4:00 p.m.) and Sacred Heart University (Sunday, 3:00 p.m.). Hamilton
will be on the road at Colgate University (Friday, 7:00 p.m.) and Union College
(Saturday, 3:00 p.m.) next weekend.

Rideout, Jamnik Pace Huskies Over Tigers, 3-0
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine)
scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another while freshman netminder
Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) turned aside 16 shots for her second career
shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Rochester
Institute of Technology Tigers, 3-0, in an ECAC Women's Division III college
hockey game Saturday evening.
Southern Maine extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1). The
Huskies improved their overall record to 12-3-2 and 10-2-1 in ECAC Division III
league play. R.I.T. dipped to 11-4-2 on the season and 7-4-2 in the league.
Rideout beat Tigers' senior goalie Melissa Norris (North Olmstead, Ohio)
at 5:53 of the first period for what proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore
Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) and junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) assisted.
Manning made it 2-0 at 4:12 of the second period with her team -leading
12th goal of the season off Rideout's assist. Sophomore Amy Matuewezski
(Woonsocket, R.I.) lit the lamp for the Huskies final goal at 14:42 of the
second period. Sophomore Patricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) and senior Jill
Powers (Beverly, Mass.) garnered the assists.
Norris was credited with 26 saves for the Tigers.
Southern Maine did not score during its only power play opportunity while
stopping four R.I.T. power plays. USM outshot the Tigers 29-16.
Southern Maine next plays Sunday (February 4) in an ECAC Division III game
at Hamilton College. Game time is 3:00 p.m. R.I.T. hosts M.I.T. Sunday in an
11:30 a.m. ECAC Division III matchup.

Fulton Scores Winner in Overtime, Huskies Come Back to Win 4-3
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) scored her second
goal of the game at 1:54 of overtime to give the University of Southern Maine
Huskies a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over the Connecticut College Camels in
an ECAC Women's Division III game at Dayton Arena Sunday afternoon.
The win extends Southern Maine's school record unbeaten string to eight
games (7-0-1). The Huskies improved to 11-3-2 overall and 9-2-1 in ECAC play.
USM's sweep of its two-game weekend road trip against Wesleyan and Conn. College
kept the Huskies in fourth play in the standings.
Connecticut College dipped to 6-9-0 overall and 2-9-0 in ECAC games. The
Camels' last three losses have all been by one goal.
Fulton scored the unassisted game winner when she out-maneuvered CC junior
goalie Anna Trafton (Topsham, Maine) for a loose puck in front of the net and
slid the puck by Trafton for her fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) forced the game into overtime
when she scored a short-handed goal with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) picked up the only assist.
The Camels took a 2-0 lead in the first period with a pair of goals 41
seconds apart. Junior Duffy Markham (Wellesley, Mass.) lit the lamp at 14:20
off an assist from senior Liz Hall (Tiverton, R.I.). Sophomore Caley Boyd (New
Canaan, Conn.) made it 2-0 at 15:01 with sophomore Lindsey Sundberg getting the
only assist.
Southern Maine rallied in the second period to tie the game, scoring twice
in a span of 13 seconds. Fulton put the Huskies on the board, set up by
sophomore Avery McGill (Middlebury, Vt.), at 7:57. Senior defenseman Breanne
Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine) got the tying goal assisted by sophomore Courtney
Rideout (South Portland, Maine).
Sundberg regained the lead for the Camels at 14:47 of the third period
with a power play goal, setting the stage for Matuewezski and Fulton's heroics.
Trafton finished the game with 34 saves. Senior Molly Duer (Montreal,
Quebec) had 11 saves for the Huskies before giving way to freshman Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) midway through the third period. Jamnik made one save.
Southern Maine hits the road again next weekend to play Rochester
Institute of Technology on Saturday evening (8:00 p.m.) and Hamilton College on
Sunday afternoon (3:00 p.m.). Conn. College travels to Trinity College on
Friday evening and Amherst College on Saturday afternoon.

Rideout Scores Late Power Play Goal to Rescue Huskies
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine)
scored a power play goal with 1:31 remaining in regulation to give the
nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-1 win over the
Wesleyan University Cardinals in an ECAC Women's Division III game Saturday
night.
The win extended Southern Maine's unbeaten string to seven games (6-0-1).
The Huskies, who play at Connecticut College Sunday afternoon (3:00 p.m.), are
10-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in ECAC play. Wesleyan, which dropped its third one-
goal decision in the last four games, fell to 4-12-0 overall and 1-9-0 in ECAC
games. The Cardinals, who have lost six straight, will host last place M.I.T.
on Sunday afternoon (3:00 p.m.)
Rideout scored on a wrist shot from the top of the right wing circle,
beating Cardinal senior goalie Emma DeSimone (Saco, Maine), for her second goal
of the season to give the Huskies the win. Junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.)
picked up the only assist on the play.
After two scoreless periods of play, the Huskies broke on top at 4:24 of
the third period when sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) lit the lamp
with a power play goal set up by Rideout. The goal was Manning's team-leading
11th of the season.
Wesleyan tied the game at 15:37 when sophomore Kiersten Von Trapp (Stowe,
Vt.), the Cardinal's leading scorer, beat USM rookie goalie Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) for her ninth goal of the season. Juniors Liz Adams (Ware,
Mass.) and Jess Zeimian (Westwood, Mass.) drew the assists.
Jamnik, who finished the game with 19 saves, came up big for the Huskies
when she stopped Von Trapp on a short-handed breakaway bid moments before
Rideout's winning goal. DeSimone was credited with 26 saves for the Cardinals.
Special teams played as big part in the game as USM went 2-for-4 on the
power play while killing both Wesleyan power plays.

Polar Bears, Huskies Skate to 2-2 Tie
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Shelly Chessie (Fredericton, New Brunswick)
scored with 43.7 seconds left in regulation time to give the Bowdoin College
Polar Bears a 2-2 overtime tie with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in
an ECAC Women's Division III hockey game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The tie stopped Southern Maine's five-game winning streak. The Huskies,
9-1-2 in their last 12 games, moved into a fourth place tie in the league
standings with Manhattanville. USM is now 9-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in ECAC
play.
Bowdoin extended its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2) with the tie.
The Polar Bears are 8-2-2 overall and 6-2-2 in ECAC play, one point behind USM
and Mahattanville.
With the goalie pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Chessie got the
Polar Bears even as she pounced on a rebound in the crease and stuffed it past
USM rookie goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) who was desperately trying to
cover the puck for a whistle. Freshmen Jill McDonald (Hudson, Quebec) and Sadie
Wieschhoff (Brookline, Mass.) picked up the assists.
USM had taken a 2-1 lead at 6:41 of the period when sophomore Stacy
Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) deflected a cross-ice pass out of the Huskies zone,
outskated the two defenders and beat sophomore Emily McKissock (Dedham, Mass.)
with a wrist shot.
The Huskies, who never trailed in the game, took an early 1-0 lead when
junior Jill Powers (Beverly, Mass.) knocked in a pass from sophomore Amy
Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) just 2:15 into the game.
Bowdoin tied the game at 17:36 of the first period as freshman Alex Harris
(Dover, Mass.) shot through a screen from 40 feet to beat Jamnik.
The Polar Bears had a 31-22 edge in shots on goal, including a 16-7 edge
in the final period. McKissock finished with 20 saves for Bowdoin while Jamnik
made 29 stops for the Huskies.
Southern Maine hits the road next weekend to play Wesleyan University on
Saturday night (7:00 p.m.) and Connecticut College Sunday afternoon (3:00 p.m.).
Bowdoin will be at home hosting defending champion Middlebury College on Friday
evening (7:00 p.m.) and St. Catherine's in a non-league game Saturday afternoon
(4:00 p.m.).

Jamnik, Huskies Blank White Mules, 2-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) stopped
20 shots to post the first shutout of her collegiate career as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies blanked the visiting Colby College White Mules, 2-0, in
an ECAC Women's Division III game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies who improved to 9-3-1
overall and 7-2-0 in ECAC play. Southern Maine is 9-1-1 in its last 11 games.
Colby, winless in its last four games (0-2-2), dropped to 5-3-4 overall and
3-3-3 in ECAC games.
Jamnik, who joined the Huskies' program at mid-year, was solid throughout
the game. She had 10 of her 20 saves in the final period as the White Mules
turned up the pressure trying to get back into the game.
After a tight-checking, scoreless first period, sophomore wing Amy
Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) put the Huskies on the board at 6:43 of the
middle period. Colby netminder Josie Chapman (Bristol, R.I.) stopped
Matuewezski's first shot, but was unable to control the rebound. Matuewezski
picked up the loose puck, made a move around the sprawling Chapman and tucked a
backhand shot into the empty net. The goal was her fifth of the season.
Sophomore wing Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) gave the Huskies an
insurance goal early in the third period when she took a pass from junior center
Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) and beat Chapman with a wrist shot to the stick side.
Sophomore defenseman Avery McGill (Middlebury, Vt.) sent Fulton and Manning away
on the two-on-one with a nifty banked pass off the board to Fulton.
The Huskies will look to extend their winning streak when they host
Bowdoin College for a matinee contest Sunday starting at 3:00 p.m. Colby will
travel to Cambridge, Mass., to meet M.I.T. at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Southern Maine Blanks Trinity, 6-0
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior forward Jill Powers (Beverly, Mass.) scored
her first two goals of the season and added an assist as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Trinity College Bantams, 6-0, Saturday
afternoon in an ECAC Women's Division III game.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and gave them a sweep of
their two-game weekend trip to Amherst College (2-0 win Friday night) and
Trinity. Southern Maine is 8-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in ECAC play. Trinity,
which won its first game Friday night against M.I.T. to snap a nine-game winless
skid (0-7-2), slips to 1-8-2 overall and 1-6-1 in ECAC play.
Southern Maine took command of the game from the outset scoring twice in
the first four minutes. Sophomore defenseman Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.) put
the Huskies on the board at 2:52 converting a pass from sophomore forward Amy
Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.). Sophomore forward Holly Manning (Northfield,
Vt.) made it 2-0 with her team-leading ninth goal of the season, unassisted, at
3:48.
Junior forward Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.), set up by Manning, made it 3-0
at 15:14. Southern Maine dominated the shots on goal, 16-3.
The Huskies outshot the Bantams by an even wider margin in the second
period, 27-2, but were only able to put two shots past freshman Meredith
MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.). Powers got her first of the season at 17:54
assisted by Matuewezski. Powers returned the favor 36 second later setting up
Matuewezski for her fourth goal of the campaign.
Powers had the only goal of the final period, unassisted, at 2:40 to make
it 6-0.
Southern Maine goalies, freshman Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) and senior
Trisha Palmi (Fitchburg, Mass.), combined to stop all seven Trinity shots for
the shutout. MacKinnon finished the day with 45 saves.
Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday night traveling to Lewiston,
Maine, to play the Bates College club team in an exhibition game. Trinity
travels to Manhattanville College and Sacred Heart University next Friday and
Saturday.

Duer, USM Blank Amherst 2-0
AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior goalie Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) stopped 13
shots and senior defenseman Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine) broke a scoreless
deadlock with 3:17 left in regulation to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies to a 2-0 victory over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in an ECAC Women's
Division III game Friday evening.
The win improved the Huskies overall mark to 7-3-1. They are 5-2-0 in
ECAC play heading into a Saturday afternoon game at Trinity College. Amherst
dropped to 2-7-0 overall and 1-6-0 in ECAC games. The Lord Jeffs will host
M.I.T. on Saturday afternoon.
Amherst sophomore goalie Heidi Alexander (Edina, Minn.) was the story of
the game making 47 saves, including 23 in the second period. Southern Maine had
a 49-13 edge in shots on goal in the game.
Fortiguerra finally slipped a shot past Alexander at 16:43 of the third
period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Junior Karen Harrison (Lakewood, Calif.)
picked up the only assist. The goal was Fortiguerra's second of the season, and
both have been game winners.
Sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) gave the Huskies some insurance
with her sixth goal of the season at 18:12, set up by junior Beth Fulton
(Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.).
Duer, who faced only three shots over the first 40 minutes, was sharp in
the final period making another 10 saves. The shutout was her fourth of the
season, and the tenth of her career.

Women's College Hockey
Huskies Have an Easy Time With Seahawks
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine) had
three assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an easy 7-0
win over the Salve Regina University Seahawks in a non-conference women's
college hockey game Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
The Huskies put the game away early by scoring five goals in a span of
2:43 in the first period. Sophomore defenseman Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.)
put the Huskies on the board at 3:55 with her second goal of the season set up
by sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine).
Rudnicki made it 2-0 with her fifth goal of the season at 4:24 as Rideout
picked up the first of her assists. Sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.)
netted the first of her two goals at 5:08. Sophomore Heather Aube (Hebron,
Maine) and senior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.) scored nine seconds apart to
make it 5-0.
After a scoreless second period, Manning picked up her second goal at
12:30 of the third period, and sophomore Patricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.)
closed the scoring at 19:55.
Southern Maine's three goalies each played a period. Freshman Karen
Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) started and made one save in the first period. Senior
Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) played the middle period making two saves, and
senior Trisha Palmi (Fitchburg, Mass.) made one save in the final period.
Senior Laura Griffin (Dorchester, Mass.) had nine saves for Salve Regina.
The win improved the Huskies overall record to 6-3-1. The Huskies will
travel this weekend to play ECAC Women's Division III games against Amherst
College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Trinity College Saturday afternoon (1:00
p.m.). Salve Regina dropped to 0-3-0. The Seahawks will play at Bates College
Wednesday night (7:00 p.m.).

Women's College Ice Hockey
Wasserman, Quevillon Lead Ephs Past Huskies, 2-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Molly Wasserman (Minnetonka, Minn.) broke a
scoreless tie midway through the third period to help lift the Williams College
Ephs to a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC
Women's Division III game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Ephs a sweep of their weekend road games against M.I.T.
and Southern Maine. The Ephs have won their last five league games to improve
to 5-1-0 in ECAC play. Williams is 7-1-0 overall. Southern Maine had its five-
game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) stopped to fall to 4-2-0 in ECAC play and 5-3-1
overall.
After 47 minutes of scoreless play, Wasserman finally solved the
goaltending of USM freshman Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) when she took a pass
out from behind the net by classmate Victoria Scott (Cambridge, Mass.) and
buried a 20-foot shot at 7:26. Rookie Katherine Nichol (Wayzata, Minn.) also
picked up an assist on the play.
Scott added an unassisted empty net goal at 19:24 to cement the victory.
Sophomore Monique Quevillon (Mascouche, Quebec) notched the shutout making
15 saves for the Ephs. She made an outstanding save on USM sophomore Courtney
Rideout's (South Portland, Maine) deflection attempt with about six minutes to
play that would have tied the game.
Jamnik, playing in her first collegiate game, finished with 29 saves.

Huskies Knock Off Crusaders 5-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Five different players scored goals as the University
of Southern Maine Huskies returned from a 28-day layoff to post a 5-0 win over
the Holy Cross Crusaders in an ECAC Women's Division III game Saturday night at
the USM Ice Arena.
The win extended the Huskies' unbeaten string to five games (4-0-1).
Southern Maine is 5-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in ECAC play. Holy Cross dropped to
0-4-1 overall and in league games.
After a sluggish and scoreless first period, the Huskies lit the lamp at
1:09 of the second period when junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) converted from
sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine) for her second goal of the
season.
Sophomore Stacy Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) made it 2-0 at 6:48 when she
deflected a shot from freshman Jeanna Leclerc (Penobscot, Maine) past Holy
Cross' sophomore goalie Jennelle DiSanto (North Reading, Mass.). Sophomore
Patricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) netted her fifth goal of the season at 17:23
made it 3-0 after two periods.
Sophomore Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) picked up her team-leading sixth
goal of the season at 6:27 of the final period. Leclerc closed out the scoring
with an unassisted goal at 10:27.
USM senior goalie Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) picked up her second
shutout of the season, and the ninth of her career, stopping all eight shots she
faced. DiSanto played very well for the Crusaders, making 30 stops.
Fulton picked up a pair of assists to go along with her goal. Manning and
Leclerc each picked up an assist on the Rudnicki goal.
Southern Maine will look to extend its unbeaten streak on Sunday (January
7) when it hosts Williams College. The opening face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
Holy Cross will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to play the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology at 4:00 p.m.

Huskies Too Strong For Engineers
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior defense Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine)
scored a goal and dished out two assists to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to an 8-0 victory over the visiting Massachusetts Institute of
Technology Engineers in an ECAC Division III Women's League game at the USM Ice
Arena Saturday afternoon.
The win extended the Huskies' unbeaten streak (3-0-1) to four and improved
their overall record 4-2-1. USM is 3-1-0 in the league. M.I.T. remained
winless falling to 0-4-0 overall and in the league.
Fortiguerra got the Huskies on the board at 2:00 of the first period with
her first goal of the season set up by senior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.).
Freshman Jeanna Leclerc (Penobscot, Maine) double the lead 34 second later with
her first career goal. Sophomore Patricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) netted her
third of the year at 5:13, and sophomore Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.) made it
4-0 at 7:12 with her first goal.
Kamp and junior Jan Forgeron (Gorham, Maine) added goals in the second
period to make it 6-0. Sophomore Stephanie Slater (Acton, Mass.) and freshman
Janet Peterson (Downington, Pa.) scored in the final period for the 8-0 final.
Senior goalie Trisha Palmi (Fitchburg, Mass.) posted her first shutout of
the season, and the third of her career, by stopping all four shots she faced.
M.I.T. senior Sara Kaplan (Great Neck, N.Y.) had 14 saves in the first two
periods while sophomore Katie Allen (Broomfield, Col.) stopped five shots in the
final period.

Huskies Rally to tie White Mules, 2-2
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.)
scored with 1:30 left in regulation to cap a two-goal rally in the final three
minutes and give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-2 tie with the
Colby College White Mules in a non-league game Wednesday night at the Harold
Alfond Athletic Center.
The tie leaves the Huskies with a 3-2-1 overall mark. USM is unbeaten in
its last three games. Colby is now 2-1-2 overall and winless in its last three
games. The two teams will meet in an ECAC Division III Women's League game at
USM in January.
Manning converted a pass from sophomore defense Katie True (Chelmsford,
Mass.) for her fifth goal in the last three games to give the Huskies the tie.
Sophomore Stacey Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) began the Huskies' rally when
she lit the lamp at 17:10 off an assist from True. The goal was Rudnicki's
third of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the White Mules finally broke the ice at
14:11 of the second when freshman Kate Sweeney (Milton, Mass.) scored her second
goal of the season. Sophomore Madeleine Mineau (Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Quebec)
picked up the only assist.
The White Mules went down a skater 32 seconds after Sweeney's goal, but
were the team to score when senior Katie Mangan (Ventura, Cal.) scored her first
of the season.
USM senior goalie Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) stopped 21 shots while her
Colby counterpart, senior Josie Chapman (Bristol, R.I.) had 26 saves.
The Huskies will close out the first semester portion of their schedule
this Saturday afternoon when they host Massachusetts Institute of Technology at
the USM Ice Arena starting at 1:30 p.m. Colby will host Hamilton and Rochester
Institute of Technology in a pair of league games this Friday and Saturday.

Molly Duer Selected ECAC Division III Women's Goalie of the Week
Holly Manning Named to Weekly Honor Roll
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goaltender Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) of the
University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team has been selected as the
Eastern College Athletic Conference's (ECAC) Division III Women's League
Goaltender of the Week for the week of November 27-December 3. The announcement
of the weekly award winners was made Tuesday by Steve Hagwell, assistant
commissioner in charge of ice hockey at the ECAC.
Hagwell also announced that sophomore forward Holly Manning (Northfield,
Vt.) had been named to the league's weekly honor roll.
"Both played very well this weekend. I thought both were at the top of
their game and worked hard," commented first-year head coach David Venditti.
"Holly played a real good two-way game, and Molly was strong in the net.
She handled her angles quite well and was good at eating up the rebounds."
Duer had an outstanding weekend, backstopping the Huskies to a pair of
league wins over Rensselaer and the University of Vermont. Against Rensselaer,
Duer stopped all 35 shots she faced, including a school single-period record 19
in the final period, in a 4-0 victory for her eighth career shutout. She came
back the next afternoon to kick out 32 of 34 shots against Vermont as USM
prevailed 3-2. She also had 28 saves in a non-league loss at Bowdoin College.
For the three games, Duer compiled a 2.00 goals against average and
stopped 95 shots for a .941 save percentage as USM went 2-1. For the season,
Duer has compiled a 2.31 goals against average, a 3-2 record with one shutout,
and a .927 save percentage
Manning, the Huskies' leading scorer last season, broke out of her mini,
early-season scoring slump in style over the weekend. At Rensselaer, she
tallied the Huskies' last three goals for her sixth career hat trick. The next
day at Vermont, she scored the first goal of the game. She now has four goals
and one assist for the season.
The Huskies, 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC play, will travel to
Waterville, Maine, to play Colby College on Wednesday (December 6) in a non-
league game starting at 7:00 p.m. USM closes out the first semester portion of
its schedule on Saturday with a league contest against Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (M.I.T.) at the USM Ice Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled
for 1:30 p.m.

Duer Backstops Huskies to 3-2 Win Over Catamounts
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Senior goalie Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) kicked
out 32 shots to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-2 victory
over the University of Vermont Catamounts in an ECAC Women's Division III game
Sunday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The win gave the Huskies, who shutout Rensselaer on Saturday, a sweep of
their two-game weekend road trip. USM improved its record to 3-2-0 overall and
2-1-0 in ECAC play. Vermont fell to .500 overall at 3-3-0. The loss was the
Catamounts first in four league games.
Duer, who stopped 35 shots in USM's 4-0 shutout victory over Rensselaer,
stopped nine shots in the first period, 11 more in the second and 12 in the
final period.
Sophomore forward Stacey Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) scored what proved to
be the game winning goal early in the third period when she beat UVM sophomore
goalie Tiffany Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) for her second goal of the season.
Sophomore defense Heather Aube (Hebron, Maine) picked up the only assist.
Freshman forward Kate McBride (Canton, Mass.) drew the Catamounts within
one at 4:24 of the final period with a power play, but UVM was unable to get the
equalizer as Duer slammed the door shut.
The teams traded goals in the first period as sophomore forward Holly
Manning (Northfield, Vt.) netted her fourth goal of the weekend at 3:25, on the
power play, to give USM a 1-0 lead. Freshman defense Lindsey Neilson (Stowe,
Vt.), who assisted on McBride's third period tally, tied the game at 12:01 with
her first collegiate goal.
Sophomore Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine) gave the Huskies the
lead for good in the second period when she scored her first of the season at
5:10.
Hayes, who was pulled with 1:15 to play in favor of the extra attacker as
UVM tried to force the game into overtime, finished with 16 saves.
Southern Maine returns to action Wednesday night (7:00 p.m.) with a non-
conference game at Colby College. Vermont travels to Rensselaer on Saturday
(Dec. 9) for its next game.

Manning, Duer Shine as Huskies Blank Engineers, 4-0
TROY, N.Y. -- Senior goalie Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) kicked out 35
shots, including 19 in the final period, and sophomore forward Holly Manning
(Northfield, Vt.) netted her first three goals as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies blanked the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers, 4-0, in an
ECAC Women's Division III game Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House.
The win got the Huskies back to .500 at 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league
play. Rensselaer slips to 2-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, the Huskies jumped out on top when
sophomore forward Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) netted her third goal of
the season at 3:09 converting a pass from senior defense Breanne Fortiguerra
(Lyman, Maine) while on the power play.
Manning, who led the Huskies in scoring last season, needed just 34
seconds to double the Huskies' lead knocking home a pass from Matuewezski for
her first goal of the season. Manning made it 3-0 before the period expired as
Matuewezski and sophomore Stacey Rudnicki (Glenburn, Maine) picked up the
assists.
Manning completed the sixth hat trick of her career at the 3:53 mark of
the third period with a solo effort.
The Huskies put the game in the hands of Duer who picked up her eighth
career shutout. She stopped eight shots in each of the first two periods before
stifling the Engineers in the final period with 19 saves for a game total of 35.
Senior goalie Laura DeNuccio (North Oaks, Minn.) had 23 stops for
Rensselaer.
Southern Maine's special teams had a good day as the power play converted
on one of two advantages, and the penalty unit killed off all six Engineer power
play.
USM travels to Burlington, Vt., to play the University of Vermont on
Sunday at 3:00. Rensselaer will try to break a two-game losing skid when it
hosts Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sunday, also at 3:00 p.m.

Polar Bears Down Huskies, 4-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College Polar Bears jumped out to a two-
goal advantage in the first ten minutes on goals by junior Carrie Simonds
(Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Ba Lanoue (Stockbridge, Mass.) and never looked
back on the way to a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies
in a non-conference game Tuesday night at the Dayton Arena.
The game was the season opener for the Polar Bears. Southern Maine dipped
to 1-2-0 overall on the season. The two teams will meet again on January 21 in
an ECAC Women's Division III League game at the USM Ice Arena.
Simonds gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead just 4:27 into the game converting
a pass from rookie Jen Pelkey (Cornwall, Ontario). Lanoue doubled the margin at
9:36 off an assist from freshman Britney Carr (Conway, N.H.).
Sophomore Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) cut the margin in half for
the Huskies at 17:18 with her second goal of the campaign.
Freshman Alex Harris (Dover, Mass.) restored the Polar Bears' two-goal
lead at 16:13 of the second period of an assist from sophomore Shelley Chessie
(Fredericton, N.B.). Chessie added another insurance goal in late in the final
period.
Sophomore Emily McKissock (Dedham, Mass.) played a strong game in goal for
Bowdoin stopping 31 of 32 shots. She also picked up an assist on Simonds' goal.
Senior Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) made 28 stops for USM.
Both teams hit the road this weekend for a pair of league games. Southern
Maine will be at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (3:00 p.m.) and the University
of Vermont (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday and Sunday. Bowdoin tangles with Williams
(7:00 p.m.) on Saturday and Holy Cross (3:00) on Sunday.

Slater Leads Huskies Past Purple Knights
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore blue liner Stephanie Slater (Acton, Mass.)
dished out four assists as the University of Southern Maine Huskies got goals
from seven different players to defeat the visiting St. Michael's College Purple
Knights, 8-0, Saturday night in a non-conference game at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Huskies a split of their two-game, season-opening
weekend. St. Michael's, a first-year varsity program, fell to 0-1-0 in its
first game. The Purple Knights had split a pair of exhibition games previously.
USM needed just 74 seconds to get on the scoreboard as junior Karen
Harrison (Lakewood, Calif.) blasted a 40-foot slap shot into the top of the net
past sophomore goalie Sarah Macconnell (Plattsburgh, N.Y.).
Slater helped set up the next two scores by sophomore Stacey Rudnicki
(Glenburn, Maine) and senior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.). Sophomores Amy
Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) scored
before the end of the first period to make it 5-0 at the break.
Junior Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Nicole Lemieux (Winslow,
Maine) added goals in the second period. Kamp had the lone goal of the third
period.
Seniors Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) and Trisha Palmi (Fitchburg, mass.)
split the goaltending duties for USM. Duer played the first period and did not
register a save. Palmi played the final 40 minutes and made two saves.
Macconnell played the first two periods, making 54 saves for St. Michael's
before giving way to sophomore Heather Rubenstein (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Rubenstein had two saves in the final period.
USM returns to action after the Thanksgiving holiday with a non-league
game at in-state rival Bowdoin College on November 28. St. Michael's will play
an exhibition game against the Bates College club team Sunday (Nov. 19)
afternoon.

Labbe Paces Panthers Past Huskies
GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward Michelle Labbe (Pt. Claire, Quebec) netted
a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Middlebury College Panthers to a 4-0
victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the season opening game
for both teams Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.
The defending national champions begin the season 1-0-0, while the Huskies
start the 2000-2001 campaign 0-1-0.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore defender Amber Neil (Port Crane,
N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game winner at the 13:06 mark of the second
period. She was assisted by Sarah Carpenter (Topsfield, Mass.).
Middlebury wasted no time in the final period as sophomore forward Erin
Neil (Port Crane, N.Y.) scored just 59 seconds into the period off an assist
from Labbe. Middlebury got a power play goal from freshman forward Jean Butler
(West Hartford, Conn.) 1:43 later set up by Labbe and Junior defenseman
Catherine Elkins (Bernardsville, N.J.). Labbe rounded out the scoring for the
Panthers at 4:16 of the period.
Elkins finished with two assists for Middlebury. The Panthers outshot the
Huskies 36-5 and it was the solid play of Southern Maine's senior goaltender
Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) that kept the Panthers from adding to their total.
Duer finished the game with 32 saves. Her counterpart, junior Megan Hutchinson
(Windsor, Nova Scotia), stopped all five shots by the Huskies for the shutout.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday night as they host St. Michael's
College. Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Four Selected as Captains for USM Women's Ice Hockey Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Four players for the 2000-2001 University of Southern
Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team have been named captains for the upcoming
season that opens November 17 when defending Division III national champion
Middlebury College visits the USM Ice Arena.
First-year head coach David Venditti announced that seniors Breanne
Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine) and Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.), along with juniors
Karen Harrison (Lakewood, Calif.) and Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.), would serve as
the Huskies' captains for the 2000-2001 season. This is the third consecutive
season that Fortiguerra has shared the captain's responsibil-ities. It is the
first time the other three have been named a captain.
The Huskies open their season next Friday night at 7:00 p.m. when
Middlebury comes to town. USM will host St. Michael's College, a first-year
varsity program, the next evening at 7:00 p.m. following the men's team's
season-opener against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Middlebury is the five-time ECAC Women's Division III League champions as
well as the defending national champion. St. Michael's, which will join the
ECAC Women's Division III League in 2001, is playing this season as an
independent.
Fortiguerra and Hill have played the past three season, including on the
Huskies' first club team in 1997-98. Both still have another year of varsity
eligibility after the 2000-2001 campaign. Harrison and Fulton joined the
program in its first varsity season in 1998-1999. USM was 12-10-2 overall and
8-7-2 in ECAC play last winter.
Fortiguerra, a smooth-skating, 5-foot-9 defenseman, had three goals and 10
assists last season.
Hill, a 5-foot-3 right wing noted for her play around the net, had 10
goals and three assists during the 1999-2000 season.
Harrison, a versatile 5-foot-4 forward who can play either center or wing,
tallied five goals and nine assists in her sophomore season.
Fulton, the team's top playmaker the last two seasons, had four goals and
a team-leading 20 assists last winter. The 5-foot-3 forward is the all-time
leading scorer for the program after its first two varsity seasons.
Between the four players, they hold or share 34 school records.
The remainder of the Huskies' 2000-2001 schedule is as follows: Nov. 28,
at Bowdoin (7:00); Dec. 2, at Rensselaer (3:00); Dec. 3, at Vermont (3:00);
Dec. 6, at Colby (7:00); and Dec. 9, M.I.T. (1:30).
Also Jan. 6, Holy Cross (7:00); Jan 7, Williams (3:00); Jan. 9, Salve
Regina (7:00); Jan. 12, at Amherst (7:00); Jan. 13, at Trinity (1:00); Jan
16, at Bates (club team) (7:00); Jan. 20, Colby (1:00); Jan. 21, Bowdoin
(3:00); Jan. 27, at Wesleyan (7:00) and Jan. 28, at Connecticut College (3:00).
The 23-game schedule winds up with games Feb. 3, at R.I.T. (8:00); Feb.
4, at Hamilton (3:00); Feb. 10, Manhattanville (4:00); Feb. 11, Sacred Heart
(3:00); Feb. 17, Colgate (7:00) and Feb. 18, Union (3:00).
The ECAC Women's Division III League playoffs will begin the weekend of
Feb. 23-25 with single-elimination quarterfinal round games. The semifinals and
finals will take place the first weekend in March. Exact dates and times will
be announced at the conclusion of the regular season. The top eight teams in
the 19-team league make the playoffs.

Venditti Named USM Women's Hockey, Lacrosse Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- David M. Venditti, the former boy's ice hockey head
coach at Cheverus High School (Portland, Maine) and an assistant coach of
women's ice hockey at the University of Southern Maine last season, has been
named head coach for women's ice hockey and women's lacrosse at the University
of Southern Maine, effective September 1. Albert D. Bean Jr., Director of
Athletics at USM, made the announcement.
Venditti, 32, succeeds Dottie Catlin who resigned after one season to
return to school and pursue a master's degree. Catlin guided the Huskies to a
12-10-2 overall record in her only season as head coach. Venditti will become
the third head coach in the history of USM's women's ice hockey program
following Anne Beaney and Catlin.
The boy's ice hockey head coach at Cheverus HS for seven seasons (1992-
1999), Venditti compiled an 83-37-2 regular season record and guided the Stags
to six playoff berths.
"Obviously I'm very excited to be coaching at the college level. It's a
challenge that I think I'm capable of handling and will be successful at,"
replied Venditti when asked for his reaction to being named head coach.
"I want to take advantage of our (Olympic sized) ice surface. I tend to
teach a more wide open, control style of game as opposed to a dump and chase
style. One thing I always tried to stress to my Cheverus teams was that if we
are in control of the puck, the other team can't score.
"I'm also very excited about the new challenge of coaching lacrosse. I
see a lot of similarities in the game to ice hockey and soccer. It is exciting
to be getting in on the ground floor with this new program," added Venditti.
A 1991 graduate of USM with a degree in economics, Venditti played four
seasons (1986-1990) for the Huskies scoring 31 points on 15 goals and 16
assists. He played his rookie season for former men's coach Gordie Clark and
the last three seasons under present USM men's coach Jeff Beaney. He served as
an alternate captain during the 1988-89 season.
"David brings an excellent combination of knowledge, experience and
enthusiasm to this position," commented Bean. "He has a documented history of
success as a head coach and was very effective as an assistant coach with our
women's hockey team. I have great confidence in David. As an alumnus and
former student-athlete, he has a real passion for the institution and these
programs, and he'll be an outstanding role model and leader for our student-
athletes."
The Huskies will open the 2000-2001 ice hockey season November 17 when
they host the five-time defending ECAC Division III Women's League champion
Middlebury College. The lacrosse team is scheduled to begin its first varsity
season against the University of New England on March 21, 2001.
