Continentals, Huskies Play to Draw in Season Finale

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Paula Dady (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a pair
of special teams goals in the third period to lift the Hamilton College
Continentals into a 3-3 tie with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
ECAC Women's Division III League contest Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The game was the final one of the 1999-2000 season for both teams.
Tied 1-1 going into the third period, USM took the lead on freshman Amy
Matuewezski's (Woonsocket, R.I.) disputed goal at 3:45. Matuewezski's shot just
under the cross bar came out of the net so quickly that the Hamilton players and
coaches believed the puck had hit the post and not gone in. Matuewezski's
second goal of the period three minutes later gave the Huskies a two-goal
advantage.
Dady cut the deficit in half with a shorthanded goal at 9:30. She poked
the puck past the Huskies' player at the point, streaked down the right wing on
a breakaway and beat USM junior goalie Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River, Vt.).
The Continentals got a power play shortly after and Dady converted a pass
from junior Jenner Atherton (Nantucket, Mass.) for the equalizer.
Southern Maine had some excellent chances to win the game in regulation,
and outshot Hamilton, 5-0, in the overtime period, but the Continentals'
freshman goalie, Jen Kroleski (New Rochelle, N.Y.), was equal to the task.
Hamilton scored the only goal of the first period at 1:57 when junior
Lauren Spoon (East Lansing, Mich.) beat Whitman with a wrist from the bottom of
the right wing circle.
Southern Maine finally got on the board with 40 seconds left in the second
period when junior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.) popped a short shot from in
front of the net over Kroleski.
Kroleski finished the game with 33 saves for Hamilton. Whitman was
credited with 25 saves for USM.
The Huskies finished their second varsity season with a 12-10-2 overall
record and an 8-7-2 mark in ECAC play. Hamilton, which picked up three of a
possible four points in the standings on the final weekend, ended the year
8-12-2 overall and 7-8-2 in the ECAC.

Huskies Fall Short in Bid for Playoffs

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Shira Katsir (North Miami Beach, Fla.)
scored two goals to pace the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) Tigers
to a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's
Division III League game Saturday night at the USM Ice Arena.
The loss drops Southern Maine to 8-7-1 in conference play and 12-10-1
overall, and eliminates the Huskies from postseason tournament. USM needed to
win its two games this weekend to make the playoffs. R.I.T. improves to 8-4-5
in the conference and 11-4-5 overall, and clinched the final spot in the
upcoming tournament.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Katsir scored 3:53 into
the opening period. Southern Maine got the equalizer at the 12:13 mark on an
unassisted goal by freshman forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.).
R.I.T. took the lead for good when junior forward Katie Obyc (Powell,
Ohio) scored a power play goal at 12:49 of the second period.
The Tigers increased their lead to 3-1 when junior forward Margaret Dumiak
(Long Grove, IL), scored just 2:26 into the final period. Southern Maine
answered back at the 7:46 mark on a goal by freshman defenseman Katie True
(Chelmsford, Mass.) to pull within one. But it wasn't enough as Katsir scored an
empty netter with 58 seconds remaining in the game.
Senior goaltender Melissa Norris (North Olmsted, Ohio) went the distance
for the Tigers stopping 33 shots. Her counterpart, junior Samantha Whitman
(Saxtons River, VT), saved 25 shots for the Huskies.
Southern Maine finishes the regular season Sunday afternoon when it hosts
Hamilton College. Game time is 2:00 p.m. R.I.T. will travel to Lewiston,

Huskies Rout Crusaders 12-0
Manning, Law Collect Hat Tricks

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Freshmen forwards Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.)
and Kim Law (Moffetfield, Calif.) each scored three goals as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies trounced the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders, 12-0,
in a women's non-conference college hockey game Wednesday night at the Hart
Athletic Complex.
The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies who improved to 12-9-1
overall. Southern Maine hosts R.I.T. and Hamilton College this weekend in the
final two games of the regular season. USM needs to sweep the two games to make
the ECAC Women's Division III playoffs that begin February 26. Holy Cross,
which had won its previous two games, slipped to 9-15-0 with the loss.
Manning wasted little time getting the Huskies on the board scoring her
22nd goal of the season, assisted by Law, just 1:56 into the game. Law made it
2-0 at the 8:50 mark with her eighth goal of the season. Sophomore Meghan Deane
(Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman Chero Waters (Wilder, Vt.) added goals later in
the period to make it 4-0 after one period.
Junior Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.), Manning, freshman Courtney Rideout
(South Portland, Maine) and Law all scored within the first 5:38 of the second
period to make it 8-0.
Manning completed her fifth hat trick of the season with her third goal of
the contest at 1:20 of the third period. After junior Jill Powers (Beverly,
Mass.) and freshman Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored, Law netted the final
goal of the contest at 9:57 for her first career hat trick.
Junior goaltender Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) needed to make just three
saves for the Huskies. The shutout was her third of the season.
Manning also picked up a pair of assists in the game for a five-point
night. Law had four points, and sophomore Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Shelly Chessie (Fredericton, New
Brunswick) scored with 50 seconds left in regulation to lift the Bowdoin College
Polar Bears to a 5-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
ECAC non-conference game Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

Bowdoin had squandered a two-goal lead late in the third period before

own end after junior goalie Katie Worthing (Brunswick, Maine) made a pair of
game-saving stops on USM freshmen Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Kim Law
(Moffetfield, Calif.), skated the length of the ice and beat junior goalie Molly
Duer (Montreal, Quebec) with a high shot for her team-leading 13th goal of the

The Huskies were able to get Duer out of the net in favor of the extra
attacker for the final 23 seconds, but were unable to get any shots on Worthing.
Southern Maine had tied the game with a pair of goals 1:55 apart.
Freshman Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.), set up by Law, pulled the Huskies
within one with her team-leading 17th goal at 14:33. Sophomore Beth Fulton
(Exeter, N.H.) tied the game at 16:28 when she forced a turnover at the blue
line and skated in alone on Worthing.

goals, set up by Matuewezski and Manning, at 8:37. Bowdoin sophomore defenseman

Huskies and Catamounts Skate to 1-1 Draw

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Holly Manning's (Northfield, Vt.) goal
at 1:02 of the third period gave the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-1
tie with the visiting University of Vermont Catamounts (10-6-3) in an ECAC
Women's Division III League game Sunday afternoon.
The tie pushes Southern Maine's record to 8-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the
conference. Vermont is now 10-6-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the conference. The tie
extended Vermont's current unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).
UVM freshman forward Jenny Agnew (Sabattus, Maine) gave the Catamounts a
1-0 lead at 17:28 of the first period when she fired a shot from just inside the
blue line that bounced off the pads of Southern Maine junior goaltender Samantha
Whitman (Saxtons River, Vt.) and slid into the back of the net. The goal was
Agnew's seventh of the season. Both teams had six shots on goal in the first
period.
After a scoreless second period, the Huskies took control of the game in
the final period, out-shooting the Catamounts 13-0. However, only Manning was
able to get a shot past Vermont's freshman goaltender Tiffany Hayes (New
Milford, Conn.). The goal came after Vermont failed to clear the puck out of
their zone after a rebound and it fell to Manning who beat a defender and pushed
a shot to the right of Hayes and into the net for her team-leading 16th goal.
In the overtime, Vermont managed only one shot on goal to Southern Maine's
six, but it was the best opportunity for both teams. Senior forward Anna Towne
(Milton, Vt.) stole the puck at center ice and skated in on a breakaway. She
tried coming across the face of the goal and shooting with her backhand, but
Whitman made the save with her right pad to preserve the tie.
Whitman finished the game with nine saves while Vermont's Hayes stopped 33
shots.
Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts in-state
rival Bowdoin College in a non-league game. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Vermont

team have been named captains for the upcoming 1999-2000 season. First-year
head coach Dottie Catlin made the announcement.
The Huskies open their second varsity season with a pair of ECAC Division
III Women's League games this weekend. The Huskies travel to Waterville, Maine,
on Friday (November 19) to play one of the league's two new members, the Colby
College White Mules, at 7:00 p.m. They hit the road again on Saturday afternoon
to play at Bowdoin College starting at 4:00 p.m.
Fortiguerra, a flashy-skating defenseman, had six goals and nine assists
for 15 points in 21 games, and led the team in penalty minutes with 48 last
season.

compiled a 3.23 goals against average with a .905 save percentage in six games.
She also was the team's second leading scorer with a team-leading 16 goals and
eight assists for 24 points.
"It's great to have (Whitman) back in the nets this season. She's a great
communicator and she sees the ice well. She has very good leadership qualities
and she has the respect of her teammates," commented Catlin, a former University
of New Hampshire standout.
"We're mixing (Fortiguerra) in with some of the first-year players we have
on the blue line looking for her to teach them the ropes. She is a vocal leader
