Huskies Finish Season 7-18-1
HENNIKER, N.H. -- Junior Jaime Collins (Reading, Mass.) scored what
proved to be the game-winning goal with 8:37 to play in the third period giving
the third-seeded New England College Pilgrims a 4-3 victory over the University
of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon in a first round game of the 2008
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East Championship Tournament
at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, N.H.
The win sends the Pilgrims into next weekend's semifinals against the Univ-
ersity of Massachusetts Boston, the tournament's second seed. The Pilgrims, who
slip a home-and-home series with the Huskies last weekend, improve to 14-10-1.
The Huskies close the season with a 7-18-1 record.
Southern Maine took an early lead with junior Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich,
N.H.) netting her third goal of the season assisted by seniors Kelly Connors
(Topsfield, Mass.) and Lindsay Herzog (Hightstown, N.J.) just 2:04 into the
first period.
The Pilgrims would respond as sophomore Jana Schneider (Skaneateles, N.Y.)
would slip a slap shot by the Huskies defense to tie the game at 1-1 at the 6:22
mark. The Pilgrims would tack on another goal just over a minute later as their
leading scorer, junior Sarah Graham (Brampton, Ontario), would sneak in a goal
assisted by senior Liz Ross (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Sarah Tracey
(Aurora, Ontario.)
The two teams would battle closely through much of the second period as NEC
out shot Southern Maine 10-6. NEC would stretch their lead to two goals as
sophomore Stefanie Lewis (Windsor, N.S.) scored her seventh goal of the season
at the 10:44 mark putting NEC up 3-1.
Southern Maine controlled much of the third period out shooting the
Pilgrims 15-6. Southern Maine cut the Pilgrim lead to 3-2 as junior Megan
Irving (Cumberland, Maine) scored a power-play goal, assisted by senior Katie
Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) at the 6:29 mark. Collins would restore a two-
goal lead for the Pilgrims as she would net her ninth goal of the season,
assisted by freshman Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.), at 11:23.
The Huskies would not go down without a fight as Herzog scored her first
goal of the season just seconds later to pull Southern Maine within a goal.
NEC's defense would hold tight as Southern Maine would have several
opportunities late.
Picking up the win in goal for the Pilgrims was sophomore Mary Roux
(Auburn, Mass.) who finished with 29 saves. In goal for Southern Maine was
junior Emily Barrett (Westport, Mass.) who finished with 23 saves.
The Pilgrims will travel to Manhattanville College where they will face the
second seeded UMass-Boston Beacons in semifinal action on March 8. Starting

BOSTON -- Freshman Rachel Sousa (Woburn, Mass.) scored her second goal of
the game 56 seconds into overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Boston
Beacons a 6-5 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East game Friday at the Clark
Athletic Center in Boston.
The win evens the Beacons' overall record at 7-7-0, and lifts them to 5-4-0
in league play. The Beacons have won the last nine meetings between the two
teams. The Huskies dropped their second straight game, and sixth in the last
seven, to fall to 4-10-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the league.
UMass Boston began the overtime on a power play after Southern Maine was
called for too many skaters in the final minute of regulation. In the opening
seconds of the overtime, USM was hit with another minor penalty to go down two
skaters, and UMB took advantage.
Sousa, who had a goal in the first period and assisted on two other UMB
scores, put a shot past USM junior goalie Emily Barrett (Westport, Mass.) for
her eight goal of the season and the game winner. Freshmen Lauren Duran

After UMB went back ahead 5-4 at 8:33 on Duran's second goal of the game,
freshman Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) tied the game at 9:03 off an assist
from rookie forward Alyssa Gibson (Hingham, Mass.).
In the opening period, the Huskies opened up a two-goal lead on two
occasions, but the Beacons kept battling back. Freshman Amanda Shorey (Ayer,
Mass.) and senior Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored in the first 6:26
to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
UMB freshman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, Minn.) cut the lead in half at 7:03
before USM senior Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine) tallied a power-play goal
at 8:26 to restore the Huskies' two-goal margin.
The two goal advantage lasted just over two minutes as Sousa scored her
first goal of the game to make it 3-2 after one period.
The Beacons had the only two goals of the middle period. Sophomore Maria
Nasta (Andover, Mass.) scored her team leading 13th goal of the season at 2:18,

of the game.

Three Named USM Women's Ice Hockey Captains
Huskies Open 2007-08 Season at Home Friday and Saturday
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Millbrook
School) and Jenna Stanley (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Bellows Free Academy), along with
junior Megan Irving (Cumberland, Maine/Hebron Academy), have been named captains
of the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey for the upcoming 2007-08
season. Second-year head coach John Lauziere made the announcement recently.
The Huskies open the season this Friday and Saturday with home games
against ECAC East foes M.I.T. and Salve Regina University. Friday's game with
M.I.T. starts at 4:00 p.m. at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. Saturday's game
against Salve Regina begins at 1:00 p.m.
The Huskies will play the final game of their three-game homestand on
November 20 (7:00 p.m.) when they host Colby College in a non-conference game.
Lauziere returns 12 skaters from last year's squad that finished 8-17-1
overall and 6-13-0 in ECAC East play. With the infusion of eight newcomers, the
second-year coach is optimistic that the Huskies can play .500 or better hockey
this season.
"Last year was a solid, rebuilding season for us. The players were
learning everything new last season. The core talent is still here. I see us
continuing to build upon what we started last year, including moving to a .500
or better record. We should be very competitive in our league this season,"
Lauziere replied when asked for an assessment of the upcoming season.
Quartuccio, an All-ECAC East honorable mention selection last winter, will
anchor the blue line corps. Stanley and Irving will be among the key operatives
on the forward lines. All three are expected to see extensive ice time this
season.
The team's leading scorer last season, Quartuccio had six goals and a team-
leading 14 assists for 20 points. Three of her six goals came on the power
play. Irving tied for second on the scoring list with 14 points on six goals
and eight assists. Stanley had three goals, including a pair of power-play
tallies, and four assists for seven points in her first season back after
sitting out the 2005-06 season.
"(Quartuccio) is an extremely hard-working defenseman who is a leader on
and off the ice. (Stanley) had a good return after a year off. I look for her
to contribute more offensively this season. (Irving ) is one of the hardest
working players and our best penalty killer. She will create a lot of offensive
opportunities for her line this year," commented Lauziere.
After their three-game homestand to open the season, the Huskies will play
five straight road games to close out the first semester. The Huskies travel to
ECAC East newcomer Plymouth State University on November 30 (6:00 p.m.), then on
to Castleton State College on December 1 (3:00 p.m.) for conference games before
traveling to Colby on December 4 (7:00 p.m.). The Huskies close out their
December schedule with a conference game at M.I.T. on December 8 (3:00 p.m.) and
a non-conference game at Amherst College on December 9 (1:00 p.m.).
Southern Maine opens the New Year with a non-conference game at home
against St. Thomas University (Minn.) on January 5 (1:00 p.m.). USM hits the
road on January 8-9 (both games at 1:00 p.m.) for a two-game, non-conference
series at Sacred Heart University.
The Huskies return home to play ECAC East newcomer Norwich University on
January 11 (4:00 p.m.) and St. Michael's College on January 12 (1:00 p.m.). The
Huskies will close out January with four straight road games against the
University of Massachusetts Boston on January 18 (4:00 p.m.), Saint Anselm
College on January 19 (3:00 p.m.), St. Michael's on January 25 (7:00 p.m.) and
Norwich on January 26 (7:00 p.m.).
The final month of the regular season has USM playing five of its eight
games at home. The Huskies entertain Holy Cross on February 1 (4:00 p.m.),
Manhattanville on February 2 (1:00 p.m.), Plymouth State on February 8 (4:00
p.m.) and Castleton State on February 9 (1:00 p.m.). The Huskies will play at
Saint Anselm on February 15 (7:00 p.m.) and at UMass Boston on February 16 (1:00
p.m.) before closing the season with a home-and-home series against New England
College.
USM and NEC will play at the USM Ice Arena on February 22 (7:00 p.m.)
before closing the regular season at Henniker, N.H., on February 23 (7:30 p.m.).
The ECAC East championship tournament will begin with quarterfinal round
games on March 1. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and final on
March 8-9. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the
NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship tournament.

SAINT ANSELM GRABS TOP SPOT IN ECAC WOMEN'S EAST POLL
CAPE COD, Mass. -- Saint Anselm College has been voted the top team in
the ECAC Women's East Ice Hockey League 2007-08 preseason poll, with 143 total
and 11 first place votes. The Hawks will look to repeat as ECAC Women's East
regular season champions, coming off a year where they posted an 18-1-0
conference mark (24-3-0 overall).
Saint Anselm will remain solid in between the pipes with the tandem of Jen
Taylor (Canandaigua, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H./Oyster
River) returning to crease. Taylor led all Women's East goaltenders with a slim
0.67 GAA, while Berlin recorded a 1.35 GAA last season. The Hawks will also
return many components of an offense that ranked number one in league scoring
last season with an average of 5.07 goals per game.
Behind Saint Anselm in the number two spot is Manhattanville College. The
Valiants will vie for their seventh straight ECAC Women's East Tournament
Championship. Last year Manhattanville skated to a 19-8-1 record (15-4-0
league), earning a spot in the Division III Women's NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament.
The third spot belongs to the College of The Holy Cross. The Crusaders
finished the 2006-07 campaign with a record of 15-10-2 overall, and 11-7-1 in
the league. Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) returns to the
lineup after leading the Crusaders offensively with 42 points (24-18-42) a year
ago.
UMass Boston has been voted into the fourth slot. The Beacons advanced to
the Women's East Semifinals a year ago, posting a record of 10-9-0 in conference
play (14-12-1 overall).
Finishing just behind the Beacons is New England College; the Pilgrims will
look to improve upon a solid 12-6-1 league record from last season.
Southern Maine was voted into the sixth slot, after a 2006-07 campaign
where they went 8-17-1 (6-13-0 league), Salve Regina follows in seventh place
after posting a 5-14-0 league mark (7-17-1 overall).
The coaches voted Saint Michael's to finish eighth, with league newcomer
Norwich University finishing ninth and Castleton State College finishing tenth
to round out the top ten.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology landed in the eleventh spot. In their
inaugural season as a member of the ECAC Women's East, the Panthers of Plymouth
State have been picked to finish twelfth by the coaches.
The ECAC Women's East League will be settled on the ice starting Saturday,
November 2 at 6:00 p.m. when the Beacons of UMass Boston travel to take on the
Salve Regina Seahawks.
