Norwich Eliminates Southern Maine, 8-2
RYE, N.Y. -- Sophomores Sarah Scardino (Stoughton, Mass.) and Brittane
Michaud (Lewiston, Maine) each scored two goals as second seeded Norwich
University defeated the third-seeded University of Southern Maine, 8-2, in an
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s East semifinal game Saturday
night at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y.
The win moves Norwich, 18-8-1, into tomorrow’s championship game against
fifth-seeded Salve Regina University. Salve Regina (18-8-1) upset top-seed and
tournament host Manhattanville College (20-7-0), 1-0, in an earlier semifinal.
Southern Maine, playing in the semifinal round for the first time since 2003,
finishes the season 14-9-4. Three of the losses came at the hands of Norwich.
The Cadets came out flying, out shooting the Huskies, 21-5, in the opening
period. Rookie Julie Fortier (Saint-Malachie, Quebec) put Norwich on top at
3:01 with an unassisted goal. Scardino doubled the margin at 10:53 with a 5-on-
3 power-play goal.
Norwich kept the pressure on in the middle period, raising its lead to 4-0
on goals 42 seconds apart by junior Sophie Leclerc (Barre, Vt.) and Michaud.
Southern Maine finally broke through with the aid of two Norwich minor
penalties. Junior Jessica Knight (Alfred, Maine) tallied a 5-on-3 marker at
13:40, with assists from freshmen Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) and Jana Sacco
(Niagara Falls, Ontario). Freshman Joanna Gaube (Woodstock, Conn.) potted
another power-play goal, assisted by Knight, 20 second later to pull the Huskies
back within two.
Scardino tallied her second goal of the game before the period ended to
take the momentum away from the Huskies.
Michaud scored her second goal at 1:39 of the third period to dash any
hopes of a USM comeback. Freshman Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored a
power-play goal midway through the period, and rookie Danielle Del Dotto (North
Andover, Mass.) added the final tally in the final seconds.
Southern Maine freshman goalie Kristen Gresko (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished
with 37 saves. Norwich sophomore Cindy Fortin (Quebec City, Quebec) stopped 27
of 29 shots.
The Cadets finished the game converting 4 of 10 power-play opportunities.
Both Huskies goals came on the power play.

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Kristen Gresko (Phoenix, Ariz.) is

ECAC commissioner Rudy Keeling announced that Gresko had received a spot on

She also has three shutouts, all coming since February 6 (seven games).
During the regular season, she was named Goalie of the Week twice (February
10 and 17), and to the weekly honor roll on one occasion (February 3). Over her
last eight starts since January 31, Gresko has a 5-2-1 record with a 1.36 goals
against average and a .949 save percentage.
The rookie goalie helped Southern Maine post its first winning record since
the 2003-2004 season with a 14-8-4 overall record heading into Saturday night's
(7:00 p.m.) semifinal playoff game against Norwich University, and a 12-5-2 mark

Southern Maine Blanks New England College 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Amanda Shorey (Ayer, Mass.) scored two goals

third-seeded University of Southern Maine shut out sixth-seeded New England
College, 3-0, Saturday in a quarterfinal round game of the ECAC (Eastern College
Athletic Conference) Women's East tournament at the USM Ice Arena.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies who improve to
14-8-4 overall, and advance to the tournament semifinals for the first time
since 2003. The Pilgrims conclude their season 11-13-2 overall.
Shorey scored her two goals within a span of 3:08 in the latter portion of
the period. Both goals came out of scrambles in front of NEC freshman goalie
Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) and were assisted by freshmen linemates Danielle
Ward (Lansing, Mich.) and Katie Paradis (Rochester, N.H.). The two goals were
the third and fourth of the season for Shorey.
Sophomore Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) potted a power-play goal with
1:39 left in regulation, assisted by Paradis and freshman Kylie Blasen (Okemos,
Mich.), to account for the final tally.
Gresko posted her third shutout of the season stopping every shot NEC fired
her way. She also got some timely help from her defense clearing rebounds,
including one off a shot from NEC freshman Chelsea Torrico (Mt. Washington,
Mass.) that was steered to the corner by senior Stephanie King (East Sandwich,
Mass.) from 10 feet out in front of an open net.
The third-seeded Huskies advance to the semifinals, and will be joined by
top-seeded Manhattanville College, second-seed Norwich University and fifth-
seeded Salve Regina University. The Huskies will play Norwich in one semifinal
game while Manhattanville battles with Salve Regina in the other. Dates and

freshman linemate Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.). She added an insurance tally,
again with help from Ward, in the final period.
Freshman Nani Jacobs (Kahnawake, Quebec) spotted the home side a 1-0 lead
at 6:19 of the opening period when her shot from the bottom of the right wing
face-off circle found its way past Nichols junior goalie Melissa Mansfield
(Medford, N.Y.). Classmate Samantha Navas (Estell Manor, N.J.) and senior
Stephanie King (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up the assists.
Nichols got on the board late in the first period with a pretty passing
play that resulted in a power-play goal from freshman Brittany Nardone
(Billerica, Mass.). Junior Ashley Parker (West Jordan, Utah) and freshman
Courtney Carey (Belmont, Mass.) combined to get the puck through the USM defense
to an uncovered Nardone stationed at the right side of the net and she steered
the puck past USM freshman goaltender Kristen Gresko (Phoenix, Ariz.).
Ward picked up her 14th goal of the season at 1:39 of the second period to
increase the margin to 3-1. King picked up her second assist of the night and

Brawley shot, at 11:39.

the steel.

manage to get the puck past Nagel and across the line before the buzzer sounded.
Less than three minutes prior to Blasen's tying goal, SHU took a 4-3 lead

season.
Senior Megan Irving (Cumberland, Maine) added an insurance marker at 13:38,
set up by sophomores Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) and Leah Spuria (Gardner,

Southern Maine Edges Plymouth State 2-1
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- A power-play goal by freshman Katie Paradis
(Rochester, N.H.) midway through the second period proved to be the game-winner
Saturday afternoon as the University of Southern Maine defeated Plymouth State
University, 2-1, in ECAC Women's East Conference ice hockey action at Waterville
Valley Ice Arena.
The Huskies finished with a 46-23 advantage in shots on goal, but had only

and in conference play.
Freshman Christen Hart (Saugus, Mass.) put Southern Maine on the board on
its first shot on goal just 32 seconds after the opening face-off. It was her
third of the season and was assisted by freshman Joanna Gaub (Woodstock,
Conn.). That ended up as the only goal of the opening frame.
Paradis rifled a shot into the upper right corner past a screened PSU
senior goaltender Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) at the 12:58 mark of the

play goal at 16:50, with assists from freshmen Danielle Shea (Billerica, Mass.)
and Abby Van Wormer (Marston Mills, Mass.).
USM outshot PSU 17-5 in the third period, several shots coming on a two-man
advantage, but neither team was able to find the net in the final frame.
Plymouth State was whistled for 10 penalties and Southern Maine 11, with
the Panthers going 1-for-11 and the Huskies 1-for-10 on the power play.

USM Opens 2008-09 Season Friday Night
Huskies Host St. Michael's College
Seniors Megan Irving and Reggie Wilson Named Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- A youthful University of Southern Maine women's ice
hockey team opens its 2008-09 season this Friday night (7:00 p.m.) hosting St.
Michael's College at the USM Ice Arena.
Third-year head coach John Lauziere has a squad that features 20 first or
second-year players on the 25-player roster. The Huskies return 10 players from
last year's 7-18-1 team and have added more speed and offensive potential to the
lineup.
Lauziere also recently announced that seniors Megan Irving (Cumberland,
Maine) and Regina Wilson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) would serve as team captains this
season. Both players are three-year veterans who are being counted on to
provide experience and leadership.
Irving, a forward, had seven goals and six assists for 13 points in 26
games last winter. Wilson, a defenseman, had one goal and one assist, in 26
games.
"I'm looking for (Irving and Wilson) to be the leaders of our team,"
commented Lauziere. "Meg is one of our top returning forwards and has the
potential to be a huge part of our team. Reggie will be the focal point of our
defense, giving us some strength and speed along the blue line, and some
leadership in the locker room. I look for the two of them to carry us a long
way this season."
After this weekend's opener with St. Michael's, the Huskies will play six
more games in the month of November. Next weekend, the Huskies will travel to
Castleton State College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Norwich University on Saturday
