Bowdoin Defeats Southern Maine 4-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore Shelagh Merrill (Lowell, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a 4-1, season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine on Friday evening at the Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar Bears jumped on the Huskies in the early going, taking the first 14 shots of the game and converting for a pair of first-period scores. Bowdoin got on the board thanks to a power-play goal five minutes in, as sophomore Alex Fahey (Bangor, Maine) tipped home a shot from sophomore Kendra Sweet (Antigosh, Nova Scotia) to give the hosts the lead. Just over a minute later, rookie Kenzie Novak (St. Cloud, Minn.) batted home her first collegiate goal to push the Polar Bears lead to two goals following one period. Merrill upped the Bowdoin lead off a feed from sophomore Dominique Lozzi (Reading, Mass.) and slipped a shot between the pads of USM junior goalie Jackie Zarb (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) at 6:35. Merrill scored her second of the night early in the third period, intercepting a pass in the USM zone and wristing a short-handed goal into the top corner of the net to make it 4-0. The Huskies broke up the shutout midway through the final period when sophomore Katie Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) found the back of the net with 7:25 to go. But that proved to be the only blemish between the pipes for Bowdoin sophomore Sage Santangelo (Laporte, Colo.), who stopped 20 shots on the night. Zarb made 32 saves in net for Southern Maine. The Polar Bears (1-0-0) will return to action Tuesday night against Saint Anselm, while the Huskies (1-4-0) will host Manhattanville College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Bowdoin improves to 16-0-1 all-time against Southern Maine. WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario) had a goal and an assist to lead Holy Cross to a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East game Tuesday night at the Hart Center. The Crusaders won their third straight to remain undefeated at 3-0-0 overall and in conference play. Suffering their third straight one-goal loss, the Huskies fall to 0-3-0 overall and in ECAC games. Wilson scored a power-play goal at 4:46 of the second period to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead at the time, and later assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal scored by senior Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) midway through the third period. GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey head coach John Lauziere recently announced that juniors Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) and Jackie Zarb (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) have been named captains for the upcoming 2009-2010 season that opens tomorrow night. The Huskies open the 2009-2010 season with home games against Castleton State College tomorrow night (7:00 p.m.) and defending league champion Norwich University on Saturday afternoon (4:00 p.m.). This is the first season that Vaughan, a defenseman, and Zarb, a goaltender, have served as a team captain. Zarb compiled a 2.05 goals against average with a .907 save percentage and a 4-0-1 record in six appearances last winter. Both players were named to the ECAC Women's East All-Academic team last year. "(Vaughan) and (Zarb) are both first-year captains leading another very young team (17 first- or second-year players among the 20 players on the roster)," commented Lauziere, entering his fourth season at the helm. "(Vaughan) is an extremely hard worker who leads by example. She's a great role model for all our young players. (Zarb) brings a lot of energy to the rink everyday, she makes things fun for everyone, and she is a great presence in the locker room." The Huskies return 11 players from last year's 14-9-4 team (12-5-2 in ECAC Women's East play) that advanced to the championship tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003 before being knocked out by Norwich. ################################################################################ Monday, November 2, 2009
