University of Southern Maine's Women's Track & Field and
Cross Country teams have a history of academic excellence. Throughout
their histories, these teams have consistently earned a team grade
point average of 3.0 or higher.
During the 2001/2002 school year, the USM Cross Country team was
recognized as Academic All Americans, the 8th time in the nine year
history of the program that the USM runners have been so
honored.
In addition, a record 27 cross country and track athletes earned USM
Wise Scholar Athlete awards. Wise awards are presented to individuals
with a GPA of 3.0 or better for a given academic year. In the same
year, the outdoor track & field team had the highest GPA (3.23) of
all 24 varsity sports at the university. The indoor track and cross
country teams followed close behind, both recording GPAs of 3.17.
