Christina Connolly Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year
George Towle Voted Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
women's indoor track and field team have been selected for end-of-the-season
awards by the Little East Conference. Freshman Christina Connolly (Boise,
Idaho) was named the conference Rookie Field Athlete of the Year, while veteran
head coach George Towle was selected Coach of the Year in a vote by his peers.
Connolly captured the pole vault title at the 2008 New England Alliance and
Little East Conference Championships, clearing 3.05 meters (10-0) to finish 31
centimeters ahead of her nearest competitor. Connolly also placed third at the
New England Division III Championship and 10th in the ECAC Division III
Championship. Her vault of 10-6 3/4 at the ECAC Championship meet was the best
of her rookie season.
In his 11th season at the helm of the USM women's program, Towle led the
Huskies to their eighth consecutive New England Alliance and Little East
Conference Championships this past winter. Southern Maine dominated the
conference meet, defeating its closest competition by 77.50 points. The Huskies
also collected their third Maine State Championship in the past four seasons.
Towle mentored a conference-best 13 student-athletes on the Little East
Conference Winter All-Academic teams.

Hattie Landry Shines at ECAC Championships
BOSTON -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) had a hand in all of
the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team's scoring at the
2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track and
Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at Harvard University.
Landry, who is provisionally qualified for next weekend's NCAA Division III
National Championships meet at Ohio Northern University, placed fifth in the 55-
meters hurdles with a time of 8.54 seconds in the finals Saturday, and seventh
in the 200 meters with a school record time of 26.24. She broke the previous
mark of 26.48 set in February 2007 by teammate Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine),
and shaved 0.43 seconds off her previous personal best set six weeks ago at
Boston University.
On Friday, the fleet-footed Landry combined with Artesani, junior Emily
Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) and sophomore Sarah Hale (Naples,
Maine/Lake Region) for a fifth place finish in the 4 x 220-yard relay (1:46.18).
Also on Saturday, Artesani posted a 12th place finish in the 200 with a
time of 26.56 and came home in 16th place in the 400 meters in a time of
1:00.09. Hale was 15th in the 200 with a time of 26.71.
Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) turned in personal bests in the mile
and 3,000 meters. Cyr covered the mile in 5:14.46 for an 11th place finish, and
the 3,000 in 10:47.78 to place 12th.
The Huskies earned 10 points to finish in a three-way for 28th place among
the 51 teams that scored in the meet. Moravian College won the team
championship with 56 points. Rounding out the top five teams were M.I.T. (42.50
points), Bates College (42), New Jersey City University (41) and The College of
New Jersey (40).
Landry will wait until Monday to hear if she has made the NCAA
Championships field for the 55-meter hurdles.

4 x 220 Relay Finishes Fifth at ECAC Championships
Landry Advances to 55m Hurdles Final
BOSTON -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) and the 4 x 220-yard
relay highlighted the first day performances by the University of Southern Maine
women's indoor track and field team competing at the 2008 Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships being held at Harvard
University.
The 4 x 220-yard relay comprised of sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono,
Maine), Landry, junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) and sophomore
Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) came home with a time of 1 minute, 47.18
seconds to take fifth place.
Landry, presently tied for 12th spot among competitors qualified in the 55-
meter hurdles for next weekend's NCAA National Championships meet, advanced to
Saturday's ECAC finals with her time of 8.50 in the trials.
Freshman Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) had a season-best effort in the
pole vault clearing 3.22 meters (10-6 3/4) to tie for 10th place.
Southern Maine is tied for 22nd place with four points after seven events.
Moravian College leads the event with 26 points, one more than St. Lawrence
University. Brockport (N.Y.) State is third with 20 points.

Artesani Set School Record in 400m at NYU Fastrack Meet
NEW YORK CITY -- Sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team broke one of
the oldest records in the program's history Friday to highlight the Huskies'
performances at the NYU Fastrack Invitational held at the New Balance Track and
Field Center in New York City. The meet is a non-team scoring event.
Artesani set the record in the 400 meters with her time of 59.64 seconds,
breaking the 17-year old mark of 59.72 set by Angela (Whelchel) Lally in
February 1991. Artesani won her heat race, and posted the 31st fastest time
among the 66 competitors from NCAA Division I, II and III schools and local
clubs. Artesani also competed in the 200 meters posting a season-best time of
26.50, just 0.02 seconds shy of her school record.
Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) finished right Artesani in the
200 with her time of 26.68. Landry, who is provisionally qualified for the NCAA
Division III meet in the 55-meter hurdles, hit the first hurdle in the 60-meter
hurdles and finished with a time of 10.72.
Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) established a personal best in the mile
to qualify for next weekend's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Championships Meet. Cyr covered the mile in 5:16.85 to win her heat race, and
placed 16th overall. Junior Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) also
competed in the mile posting a time of 5:33.76.
Freshman Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) tied for seventh place in the
pole vault by clearing 3.10 meters (10-2). Senior Brenna Widdis (Portland,
Maine/Gorham) tied for 11th in the high jump clearing 1.55 meters (5-1). Senior
Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth [Mass.]) competed in the 800 meters
posting a time 2:32.62.
The Huskies return to action next weekend (March 7-8) when they compete in
the ECAC Division III Championships held at Harvard University.

Southern Maine Finishes 11th at New England Division III Championships
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Seniors Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth
[Mass.]) and Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) combined with sophomores Emily
Artesani (Orono, Maine) and Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) to win the 4
x 200-meter relay to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's
indoor track and field team's performance at the 2008 New England Division III
Championships held Saturday at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
The Huskies finished 11th among the 25 scoring teams at the meet with 24
points. Tufts University won the meet claiming 136 points and was followed
closely by Williams College in second place with 128.50 points. The
Massachusetts Institute of Technology placed third with 79 points, while
Springfield College placed fourth netting 76 points. Amherst College rounded
out the top five with 73 points.
Artesani, Hutchinson, Landry, and Hale posted a school-record time of
1-minute, 46.50 seconds to win the 4 x 200 and eclipsed the five-year old record
of 1:47.07 set by Kristen Ingalls, Brittany MacLean, Kim Brewer and Kendall
Guyette in March 2003. Southern Maine's time of 1:46.50 edged the Williams
College team by two one-hundredths of a second.
Artesani, Hale and Landry also scored points individually for Southern
Maine as each earned an eighth place finish. Artesani placed eighth in the 400-
meter dash clocking a time of 1:01.07. Hale turned in a time of 7.79 seconds in
the finals of the 55-meter dash. Landry earned an eighth place mark in the 200-
meter dash with a time of 27.11. In the 55-meter hurdles, Landry set a school
record in the preliminary round with a time of 8.48, breaking her old mark of
8.54 set last weekend. Unfortunately, she was disqualified for a false start in
the final.
Freshman Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) earned a third place finish for
the Huskies in the pole vault clearing a personal best 10-6 (3.20 meters).
Southern Maine's distance medley relay team of juniors Alison Bradley
(Auckland, New Zealand/Orewa), Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and freshmen Erin
Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.) and Lauren Seide (North Andover, Mass.) earned a
seventh place with the fifth fastest time in school history, crossing the finish
line in 13:07.16. Junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) also
garnered points for the Huskies taking a sixth place finish in the triple jump
with a leap of 33-11 1/4 (10.34 meters).
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday (10:00 a.m.) when it competes at
the New York University (NYU) Fast Track Invitational.

Landry and Poliquin Earn LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) and junior
Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) of the University of Southern Maine
Huskies women's indoor track and field team have each earned weekly accolades
from the Little East Conference for the week ending February 17.
Landry and Poliquin were instrumental in the Huskies' defense of their
Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championship titles. For their
efforts, Landry was named the LEC Track Athlete of the Week while Poliquin was
tabbed as the Field Athlete of the Week. This is the second straight week that
the duo has received LEC weekly honors.
With its 2008 championship titles, Southern Maine has captured eight
consecutive Little East Conference and New England Alliance Women's Indoor Track
and Field Championships dating back to the 2000-2001 season.
Landry did yeoman duty for Southern Maine earning a first, second, third
and fourth place finish to score 29 points at the meet. Landry took the top
spot in the 55-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in first place with a
school and meet record time of 8.54 seconds. She broke the school record of
8.60 seconds set by Rebecca Reed in February 1999. Landry placed fourth in the
200-meter dash (27.28 seconds), third in the long jump (4.93 meters, 16-2) and
second in the 55-meter dash (7.55 seconds). Landry also ran a leg on the
Huskies' winning 4 x 200-meter relay team.
Poliquin earned one of two first place finishes for the Huskies in field
events. She captured the triple jump with a leap of 10.80 meters (35-5 1/4),
while taking second in the long jump with a distance of 4.95 meters (16-2 3/4).
Southern Maine won the Alliance meet with 196.50 points, and the Little
East scoring with 206 points. The New England Alliance Championship combines
the 11 teams competing from the Little East Conference and Massachusetts State
College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
The Huskies return to action this Saturday (10:00 a.m.) at the New England
Division III Championships hosted by Smith College.

USM Captures Eighth Straight LEC and N.E. Alliance Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) won two events,
senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) placed in the top four in four events,
and each athlete a ran a leg on the winning 4 x 200-meter relay team to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team to a
sweep of the New England Alliance and Little East Conference championships for
the eighth consecutive year Saturday at Southern Maine's Costello Sports Complex
field house in Gorham.
In the Alliance meet, which features 11 schools from the Little East
Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, Southern
Maine captured the championship with 196.50 points. Keene State was second with
119 points, followed by Rhode Island College with 86 points, Westfield State
with 81 points and Eastern Connecticut State University with 77 to round out the
top five.
The Huskies took the Little East crown by a large margin scoring 209
points. Keene State finished second with 117.50 points and Rhode Island College
placed third with 91 points. Eastern Connecticut scored 82 points for fourth,
UMass Dartmouth scored 42.50 points to finish fifth with 42.50 points and UMass
Boston placed sixth tallying seven points.
Artesani defended her 2007 titles winning both the 200 and 400 meters as
Southern Maine earned seven first place finishes in the meet. Artesani won the
200 in a time of 26.68 seconds and clocked a winning time of 1:00.56 in the 400.

Southern Maine also received solid performances from junior Gabby Cyr (Fort
Kent, Maine) and freshman Vanessa Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft
Academy). Cyr earned second and third place marks respectively competing in the
mile and 800 meters. Cyr placed second in the mile with a time of 5:21.25 and
third in the 800 in 2:26.98. Baird helped USM tally points in the field events
earning a third and fourth place finish in the weight throw and shot put. In
the weight throw, Baird had a distance of 11.65 meters (38-2 3/4) for third and
in the shot put she placed with a throw of 9.96 meters (32-8 1/4).
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday at the New England Division

Landry and Poliquin Earn Little East Conference Weekly Honors

Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) of the University of Southern Maine
women's indoor track and field team have each earned recognition from the Little
East Conference for their performances at the 2008 Maine State Indoor Track and
Field Championships held this past Friday night at the Costello Sports Complex
field house in Gorham.
Landry was named the LEC Track Co-Athlete of the Week, sharing the award
with Keene State College senior Jennifer Adams, while Poliquin was named the
conference's Field Athlete of the Week. Both helped Southern Maine win the state
meet team title - its third in the last three years and first since 2006. The
Huskies edged out Bates College 154-149 for first place in the four-team meet.
Landry scored 38 points and had a spectacular meet winning the 200-meter
dash, 55-meter hurdles and the 55-meter dash, earning three of the Huskies'
seven first place finishes in the meet. In the 55-meter dash, Landry
established a new school record with a time of 7.51 seconds in the finals,
breaking the previous mark of 7.55 set by Josie Marshall in 2006. Landry
claimed the top spot in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.66,
and crossed the finish line in first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of
26.98. Landry also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.05 meters
(16-7).
Poliquin tallied 18 individual points for Southern Maine winning the long
jump with a leap of 5.09 meters (16-8 1/2) and earning a second place finish in
the triple jump with a distance of 10.65 meters (34-11 1/4). Poliquin also ran
the third leg of the Huskies' winning 4 x 200-meter relay team which turned in a
time of 1:51.66.
Southern Maine will host the 2008 Little East Conference and New England
Alliance Championships this Saturday (12:00 p.m.). The Huskies will attempt to
defend their string of seven consecutive LEC and Alliance Championship titles.

Southern Maine Wins State Title
Hattie Landry Takes First in Three Events
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) won three
events to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and
field team to a first place finish at the 2008 Maine State Indoor Track and
Field Championship Friday night at the Costello Sports Complex field house in
Gorham.
Southern Maine edged Bates College, 154-149, to capture the team title.
Bowdoin College placed third with 142 points, while Colby College rounded out
the scoring in fourth with 135 points. The title is the third in the last four
seasons for Southern Maine which previously won the title in 2005 and 2006.
Landry, who scored 38 points for USM, had a spectacular meet winning the
200-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash, earning three of the
Huskies' seven first place finishes. In the 55-meter dash, Landry established
a new school record with a time of 7.51 seconds in the finals, breaking the
previous mark of 7.55 set by Josie Marshall in February 2006. Landry claimed
the top spot in the 55-meter hurdle with a personal best time of 8.66, and
crossed the finish line in first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of
26.98. Landry capped off her meet with a second place finish in the long jump
with a jump of 16-7.
Southern Maine received strong contributions in the field events, led by
junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon). Poliquin placed first in
the long jump with a distance of 16-8 1/2 (5.09 meters). In the triple jump,
Poliquin leapt 34-11 1/4 (10.65 meters) to place second.
Junior Brenna Widdis (Portland, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Cristina
Connolly (Boise, Idaho) also recorded winning performances for Southern Maine.
Widdis captured the top spot in the high jump clearing 5-1 (1.55 meters), while
Connolly won the pole vault competition handily setting a personal best mark
with a vault of 10-4. Connolly achieved the personal record on her third
attempt at that height. Southern Maine won the pole vault for the seventh
consecutive year (2002-2008). Widdis also earned a fourth place finish in the
triple jump with a distance of 31-8 3/4 (9.67 meters).
Southern Maine won the 4 x 200-meter relay for the fourth consecutive year
(2005-2008). Junior Anna Biasin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), senior Christa
Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth [Mass.]), Poliquin and sophomore Sarah Hale
(Napes, Maine/Lake Region) teamed to win the event in a time of 1:55.66.
Hale earned a second place finish in the 55-meter dash behind Landry in a
time of 7:72, while Hutchinson claimed a second place mark in the 600-meter run
with a time of 1:40.44.
Sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) and junior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent,
Maine) also competed well for Southern Maine. Cyr had a pair of fourth place
finishes in distance events, finishing the mile-run in 5:18.41 and then crossing
the finish line in a personal best 10:50.69 in the 3000-meter run. Artesani
placed second in the 200-meter dash (27.08 seconds) and third in the 400-meter
dash (1:01.00).
Southern Maine will host the 2008 Little East Conference and New England
Alliance Championships on February 16 (12:00 p.m.). The Huskies will attempt to
defend their string of seven consecutive LEC and Alliance Championship titles.

Sarah Hale Named LEC Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team has
been named the Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the week of
January 28 through February 3.
This is the second time in her career that Hale has been named LEC indoor
Track Athlete of the Week.
At the USM Coed Invitational this past Saturday at the Costello Sports
Complex field house, Hale earned a victory and a third place finish
individually. She also was part the Huskies' winning 4 x 200-meter relay team.
Hale's performances at the meet helped Southern Maine edge Bates College,
194.50-190.50, for a first place finish in the eight-team event.
Hale won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds in the finals and
earned a third place finish in the 200-meter dash as she crossed the finish line
at 27.77. Hale, running the anchor leg, combined with sophomore Emily Artesani
(Orono, Maine) and seniors Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth [Mass.])
and Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) to form USM's winning 4 x 200 relay team
which turned in a time of 1:49.01.
Southern Maine returns to action this Friday (6:00 p.m.) when it hosts the
State of Maine Championships at the Costello Sports Complex.

Southern Maine Edges Bates to Win USM Coed Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomores Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) and
Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine), junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls,
Maine/Lisbon) and seniors Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) and Hattie
Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) helped the University of Southern Maine women 's
indoor track and field team score points in multiple events to lead the Huskies
to a first place finish in the USM Coed Invitational Saturday at the Costello
Sports Complex field house in Gorham.
Southern Maine won the meet with 194.50 points, narrowly edging Bates
College which placed second with 190.50 points. Smith College placed a distant
third with 61 points, followed by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in
fourth with 55 points and Emmanuel College in fifth with 55 points. Gordon
College edged Fitchburg State for sixth place, 32-30. Worcester State rounded
out the scoring in eighth place with 20 points.
Artesani, Hale, Hutchinson and Landry combined to win the 4 x 200-meter
relay crossing the finish line in first place in a time of 1-minute, 49.01
seconds. It was one of six first place finishes for the Huskies. Earlier in
the competition, Hale won the 55-meter dash turning in a time of 7.63 in the
finals, while Hutchinson placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.90.
Artesani placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.26.
Hutchinson also earned a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time
of 27.76, followed by Hale in third at 27.77. Landry later competed in the 55-
meter hurdles and the long jump. She placed second in both events with a time
of 8.90 in the 55-meter hurdles and a distance of 16-4 1/2 in the long jump.
Juniors Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine), Brenna Widdis (Portland,
Maine/Gorham) and Poliquin also earned first place marks for Southern Maine.
Cyr won the mile run in a time of 5:25.09, while Widdis claimed top honors in
the high jump, clearing 5-1. Poliquin earned first place in the long jump with
a distance of 17-0, and also placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 34-
0 1/4.
In its next competition, Southern Maine hosts the State of Maine
Championship on Friday (6:00 p.m.) at the Costello Sports Complex.

Southern Maine Competes at Wesleyan Invitational
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) won the
55-meter hurdles in an ECAC Division III Championship qualifying time to lead
the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team
Saturday afternoon at the 2008 Wesleyan University Invitational at the Bacon
Field House in Middletown, Conn.
Landry's time of 8:84 seconds is a personal best mark for the senior and
ranks her third in the event in USM women's indoor track and field history.
Landry was one of six Huskies to earn top-five finishes at the non-team scoring
invitational which featured teams from Division I, II and III institutions.
Landry also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 4.97 meters (16-3
3/4).
Freshman Cristina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) and junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon
Falls, Maine/Lisbon) each earned second place finishes for Southern Maine
competing in field events. Connolly cleared 10-0 in the pole vault for the

Terrier Invitational on Friday night, qualifying for the ECAC Division III
Championship. Competing in the triple jump, Poliquin leapt a distance of 10.26
meters (33-8).
Senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) and freshman Vanessa
Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) placed fourth and fifth
respectively in the weight throw. Day earned a distance of 11.31-meters (37-1
1/4) and Baird threw for 10.92 meters (35-10). Baird also had a 10th place
finish in the shot put with a distance of 9.48 meters (31-1 1/4). In the high
jump, junior Brenna Widdis (Portland, Maine/Gorham) placed fourth clearing 1.51
meters (4-11 1/2).
Southern Maine returns to action on February 2 (1:00 p.m.) when it co-hosts
its USM Coed Invitational at the Costello Sports Complex.

Southern Maine Competes at Terrier Classic
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) and sophomores
Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) and Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine) each sprinted their
ways to ECAC Division III Championship qualifying times in the 200-meter dash to
highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and
field team's participation at the 2008 Terrier Classic hosted by Boston
University Friday evening in Boston.
Landry, Artesani and Hale each turned in a sub 27-second performance at the
non-scoring event that features institutions from NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
Landry led the USM pack with a time of 26.67 seconds, followed by Hale and
Artesani in 26:71 and 26.92 respectively. Both Landry and Hale set personal
best times in the race.
Senior Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) also competed in the
event and established a personal best time, crossing the finish line in 27:47.
Hutchinson's performance in the 200-meter dash was the first of two PR times
that the senior would have during meet as she recorded a time of 1:01.06 in the
400-meter dash.
Southern Maine freshman Cristina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) also qualified for
the ECAC Championships in March, becoming just the sixth USM competitor in the
history of the program to clear 10 feet in the pole vault. Connolly recorded a
vault of 10-0 (3.05 meters) to finish as the top Division III competitor in the
event, placing 11th overall.
In distance events, senior Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand/Orewa)
shaved seven seconds off of her personal best time in the 3000-meter run
clocking a time of 11:04.31.

Southern Maine Places Fourth at MIT Invitational
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) and junior
Anna Biasin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had a pair of top-three finishes
to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a fourth place finish at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational Saturday afternoon in
Cambridge, Mass.
Southern Maine totaled 120.50 points to place fourth at the four-team meet.
MIT won the meet with 178.50 points, followed by Bates College in second with
151 points. Colby College placed third scoring 127 points.
Landry placed second in the 55-meter hurdles and third in the 55-meter dash
to pace the Huskies. She crossed the finish line in 9.18 seconds in the 55-
meter hurdles finals, and posted a time of 7.75 in the 55-meter dash finals.
Biasin took third place finishes in the 55-meter hurdles and long jump.
Biasin placed third behind Landry in the hurdles with a time of 9.29. In the
long jump, Biasin cleared a distance of 4.79 meters (15-8 3/4).
Sophomores Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) and Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake
Region) also earned second place finishes for the Huskies. Artesani took second
in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.43, while Hale was second in the 55-
meter dash with a time of 7.67.
Junior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) earned fifth place marks in the mile
and the 1,000-meter run. She completed the mile run in a time of 5:27.87 and
the 1,000 in 3:19.08.
In field events, junior Brenna Widdis (Portland, Maine/Gorham) and freshman
Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) placed second and third
respectively in the high jump. Widdis cleared 1.52 meters (4-11 3/4) and Hall
cleared 1.42 meters (4-7 3/4). In the pole vault, freshman Cristina Connolly
(Boise, Idaho) earned a third place finish by clearing 2.88 meters (9-5 1/4).
Next weekend, Southern Maine will be in action on Friday at the Terrier
Classic, hosted by Boston University, and on Saturday (10:00 a.m.) at the
Wesleyan University Invitational.

Southern Maine Competes at University of Rhode Island New Year's Classic
KINGSTON, Rhode Island -- Seniors Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Fal-
mouth [Mass.] HS) and Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) each turned in ECAC
Division III Championship qualifying performances as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team returned to action Friday
morning competing in the University of Rhode Island New Year's Classic at Mackal
Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island.
Southern Maine received several strong performances in its first action
since exams and the holiday break competing at the multi-divisional non-team
scoring event.
Hutchinson's third place finish in the 500-meter run qualified her to
compete in the ECAC Championships (March 7-8) at Harvard University in Boston,
Mass. Hutchinson turned in a time of one minute, 21.66 seconds bettering the
qualifying time of 1:23.74 by over two seconds.
Landry's time of 9.04 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles earned her a fifth
place finish at the meet, the top place for a Division III competitor, equaling
the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championship. Landry also earned a second
place finish in the long jump clearing a distance of 4.78 meters (15-8 1/4).
Southern Maine also received strong performances from juniors Gabby Cyr
(Fort Kent, Maine) and Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand/Orewa) and freshman
Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho).
Cyr placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.26 and fourth in
the mile run with a time of 5:32.46. Bradley earned a third place result in the
3000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 11:11.90. Connolly tied for third
in the pole vault clearing a height of 2.90 meters (9-6 1/4).
Southern Maine returns to action a week from Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it
competes at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.

Southern Maine Opens Season at Preseason Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) was a
double winner and junior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) had an impressive win in
the mile run as the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field
team opened its 2007-08 season with a strong showing at the Preseason
Invitational held at the USM Field House. The event was a non-team scoring
meet.
Hale swept the 55 and 200-meter dashes. She took the 55 with a time of
7.65 seconds and the 200 with a time of 27.74 seconds.
Cyr won the mile coming from third place on the final lap to pass two
runners and record a winning time of 5:26.47.
Other winners for the Huskies included sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono,
Maine) in the 400 meters (1:04.21), the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:23.89), freshman
Hilary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump (4-8), freshman
Christina Connelly (Boise, Idaho) in the pole vault (9-0), and junior Emily
Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) in the triple jump (33-5 1/2).
Earning second place finishes were senior Hattie Landry (Acton,
Maine/Wells) in the 200 meters (28.21) and long jump (16-1 1/4), freshman Lauren
Seide (North Andover, Mass.) in the 400 meters (1:09.38), junior Anna Biasin
(Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the 55-meter hurdles (9.36), junior Tegan
Benham (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the shot put (31-3) and junior Katie
Day (Hampden, Maine) in the weight throw (35-11).
Southern Maine is off until the New Year when its travels to Kingston,
R.I., to compete in the URI New Year's Classic at the University of Rhode
Island.
