Emily Artesani Named LEC Track Athlete of the Year
Bethany Dumas Shares Rookie Field Athlete of the Year Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
and field team collected a pair of awards Wednesday when the Little East
Conference released its annual end-of-the-season awards.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
that USM junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) had been selected the Track
Athlete of the Year, and freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was a co-
recipient of the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year Award.
Harper also announced that senior Kayla Fleming of Rhode Island College had
been picked as the Field Athlete of the Year, freshman Andrea Walsh of Keene
State College was tabbed as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Year, and freshman
Kim Magnum of Rhode Island College shared the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year
award with Dumas. Kevin Jackson, head coach at Rhode Island College, was named
the Coach of the Year. All the awards were chosen by a vote of the conference's
head coaches.
Artesani and Dumas were mainstays of this winter's USM team that won its
ninth consecutive Little East Conference and New England Alliance championships.
Artesani was cited four straight weeks as the LEC Track Athlete of the Week
while Dumas collected an LEC weekly honor nine times during the indoor season.
Dumas was named the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week seven times, and received
both the Field Athlete of the Week and Rookie Track Athlete of Week awards once.
Artesani won an unprecedented three titles at the Little East Conference
Championships, taking the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.69 seconds, the 200
meters in 27.09 and the 400 meters, for the third straight year, with her time
of 1:00.98. No one previously had swept the three sprint titles at the LEC
meet. In the New England Alliance scoring, Artesani was first in the 400,
second in the 200 and fourth in the 55-meter dash.
She earned Division III All-New England honors in the 200 and 400 meters by
finishing fourth in the 400 (59.32) and eighth in the 200 (26.88). She also
picked up her first All-ECAC honor indoors placing eighth in the 400 meters
(59.64).
Establishing herself as one of the region's top competitors in pole vault,
Dumas had a brilliant rookie season. She won titles in the pole vault at the
State of Maine Championships (3.36 meters/11-0 1/4), and the LEC/NEA
Championships when she cleared a meet record 3.66 meters (12-0).
Dumas earned Division III All-New England honors by placing third (3.55
meters/11-7 3/4) at that meet, an All-New England citation after finishing sixth
(3.51 meters/11-6 1/4) at the NEIcAAA Championships, and All-ECAC accolades when
she placed fourth with a school record mark of 3.70 meters (12-1 1/2). Dumas
participated in the NCAA Division III National Championships, finishing 16th
with a vault of 3.36 meters (11-0 1/4).

Dumas Competes at NCAA Division III Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the
University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team competed in the
pole vault Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National
Championships being held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute,
Indiana.
Dumas entered the competition at 3.36 meters (11-0 1/4) and cleared that
height on her second attempt. With the bar raised to 3.51 meters (11-6 1/4),
Dumas failed on her three attempts and was eliminated from further competition.
She would place 16th in the final standings.
Junior Rachel Secrest of North Central College won the national title by
clearing 3.86 meters (12-8).
Dumas is the fifth USM female to participate in the NCAA indoor
championships meet. Others to compete in the meet include Angela (Whelchel)
Lally (400 meters - 1991), Amy Swanberg (pole vault - 2000), Melissa Bellemore
(pole vault - 2006) and Sarah Marzouk (Mile - 2006). Dumas's participation in
the NCAA championships concludes the Huskies indoor season.

Bethany Dumas Makes Field for NCAA Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine freshman Bethany Dumas
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) will be among the field of 16 competitors in the pole
vault this Friday at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field
Championships being held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute,
Indiana.
Dumas is the fifth competitor in the history of the USM women's program to
make the NCAA indoor championship field. She joins Angela (Whelchel) Lally, Amy
Swanberg, Melissa Bellemore and Sarah Marzouk on the list of USM athletes to go
to the NCAA meet. Lally competed in the 400 meters in 1991. Swanberg and
Bellemore competed in the pole vault in 2000 and 2006, respectively. Marzouk
made the field for the mile in 2006.
The school record holder indoors in the pole vault, Dumas raised her record
to 3.70 meters (12-1 1/2) at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III Indoor Championships this past weekend en route to a fourth place
finish and earning All-ECAC honors. That mark easily surpassed the NCAA
provisional qualifying standard of 3.45 meters (11-3 3/4), and was just five
centimeters (12-3 1/2) shy of the automatic qualifying standard.
Dumas broke Bellemore's school (11-9 3/4) and meet (11-7) records February
14 at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships when she
cleared 3.66 meters (12-0) to win the title. Dumas also earned Division III
All-New England and NEIcAAA All-New England honors, and received various Little
East Conference weekly citations nine times during the season.
The entire field for NCAA indoor championships was released Sunday evening.

ECAC Division III Championships
Artesani, Dumas Earn All-ECAC Accolades
MEDFORD, Mass. -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) of the University
of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team added to her impressive
resume Saturday earning All-ECAC honors at the 2009 Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships held at
Tufts University.
Artesani joins freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) as USM athletes
earning All-ECAC citations. Artesani picked up her first career All-ECAC
citation indoors after finishing eighth in the 400 meters with a time 59.64
seconds. She also competed in the 200 meters crossing the finish line in a time
of 26.87 seconds to place 17th.
Dumas earned her All-ECAC honor on Friday finishing fourth in the pole
vault. She cleared a school record 3.70 meters (12-1 1/2), breaking her
previous mark of 3.66 meters (12-0) set three weeks ago at the New England
Alliance and Little East Conference Championships.
Provisionally qualified for next weekend’s NCAA Division III National
Championships, Dumas’ height moved her up to tenth place in the national
rankings, pending other results this weekend. She will wait until Monday for
the NCAA to announce if she has made the field for the national championships at
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Others competing Saturday included sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump. Hall cleared 1.57 meters (5-1 3/4).
She was one of eight jumpers to clear the height, but placed 15th overall based
upon misses. Freshman Amy McIntire (Raymond, Maine/Westbrook) finished 20th in
the long jump with a best jump of 4.73 meters (15-6 1/4).
Southern Maine finished with six points to end up in a four-way tie for
34th place among the 51 teams that scored points. Springfield College won the
team title with 62 points, followed by Moravian College with 56 and The College
of New Jersey with 52.

Dumas Raises School Record in Pole Vault at ECAC Championships
MEDFORD, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine freshman pole vault
sensation Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) raised her school record en route
to a fourth place finish during the first day of competition at the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships being held at the
Gantcher Center on the campus of Tufts University.
Dumas cleared 3.70 meters (12-1 1/2) to finish fourth, breaking her
previous mark of 3.66 meters (12-0) set three weeks ago at the New England
Alliance and Little East Conference Championships. The mark also improved her
NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark. The NCAA field will be announced
sometime Monday, and pending other results from this weekend, Dumas is now
ranked tenth in the nation.
Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) also competed in the pole
vault. She cleared 2.95 meters (9-8) to finish tied for 21st place overall.
After seven events, Springfield College and Moravian College were tied for
the team lead with 23 points. Southern Maine is in a five-way tie for 17th
place with five points.

Bethany Dumas Receives LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- For the eighth time this season, freshman Bethany Dumas
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
and field team has received a Little East Conference weekly honor.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Dumas had been selected as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for
the fourth straight week, and the sixth time this winter season. Dumas has also
received the LEC Field Athlete of the Week award once (December 15) and the
Rookie Track Athlete of the Week on one occasion (January 26).
Competing in the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association
Championships at Boston University last weekend, Dumas placed sixth in the pole
vault by clearing 3.51 meters (11-6 1/4) to earn All-New England honors. The
meet features NCAA Division I, II and III institutions from across the six-state
region.
Dumas and other USM qualifiers will compete this Friday and Saturday at the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships being held
at Tufts University.

EDITOR's NOTE: The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field
team had no competitors in Saturday's events at the New England Intercollegiate
Amateur Athletic Association Championships being held at Boston University.
USM's only qualifier was scratched due to an injury.
The University of Connecticut won the team title going away with 186.50
points. USM finished in a three-way tie for 28th place with 3.0 points.

Dumas Sixth in Pole Vault at NEIcAAA Championships
BOSTON -- University of Southern Maine freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) earned All-New England honors in the pole vault Friday at the first
day of the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA)
Championships being staged at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Dumas cleared 3.51 meters (11-6 1/4) to finish sixth among the 20
competitors. Dumas added All-New England honors to her impressive rookie season
resume that includes the school record in the pole vault (12-0), a state
championship, the Little East Conference title and a tie for second place at the
New England Division III Championships.
Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) also competed in the pole vault
and cleared 3.06 meters (10-0 1/2) to finish 16th overall.
Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) ran in the 400-meter trials, coming in
with a time of 59.64 seconds. She was 17th fastest among the 32 competitors.
After one day of competition (six events scored), the University of New
Hampshire leads the meet with 33 points. Southern Maine, with three points, is
in a three-way tie for 17th place.

Emily Artesani & Bethany Dumas Received LEC Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third consecutive week, University of Southern
Maine women's indoor track and field team members Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine)
and Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) have been selected by the Little East
Conference for recognition.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
this afternoon that Artesani, a junior, has been picked as the Track Athlete of
the Week for the fourth straight week, and Dumas was tabbed as the Rookie Field
Athlete of the Week for the third straight week, and the fifth time this season.
At the New England Division III Championships held last weekend at Bowdoin
College, Artesani placed fourth in the 400 meters with a school record time of
59.32 seconds and eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.88. She lowered
her previous school record in the 400 by 0.32 seconds. Artesani received
Division III All-New England recognition in both events.
Dumas continued her impressive rookie season earning Division III All-New
England honors by tying for second place in the pole vault. She cleared 3.55
meters (11-7 3/4) to share the runner-up spot with Emily Hwang of M.I.T. She
also competed in the long jump with a best jump of 4.89 meters (16-0 1/2) to tie
for 14th place among the 29 competitors.
Artesani, Dumas and other USM qualifiers will travel to Boston this Friday
and Saturday to compete in the NEIcAAA Championships.

USM Finishes 11th at N.E. Division III Championships
Artesani Lowers Her School Record in the 400 Meters
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) lowered her
school record in the 400 meters Saturday to highlight the University of Southern
Maine women's indoor track and field team's performance at the New England
Division III Championships held at Bowdoin College.
Artesani covered the 400 meters in a time of 59.32 seconds to finish fourth
and shave 0.32 seconds off her previous record set last February. Artesani also
earned Division III All-New England honors (top eight) in the 200 meters with
her eighth place finish in a time of 26.88.
Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) earned a sixth place finish in the mile
with a season-best time of 5:19.60. Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine)
placed 10th in the event in 5:25.44.
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) continued her impressive
rookie season tying Emily Hwang of M.I.T. for second place in the pole vault
after each cleared 3.55 meters (11-7 3/4). Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise,
Idaho) tied for fifth in the event clearing a season-best 3.10 meters (10-2).
Freshman Amy McIntire (Raymond, Maine/Westbrook) finished seventh in the
long jump with a leap of 5.09 meters (16-8 1/2).
Southern Maine earned 21.50 points to finish 11th among the 24 teams that
scored in the meet. M.I.T. won the team title with 134 points, followed by
Williams College with 118 points. Tufts University, with 108 points, host
Bowdoin with 88, and Springfield College with 77 round out the top five teams.
The Huskies will compete next Friday and Saturday (February 27-28) at the
NEIcAAA Championships being held at Boston University.

Emily Artesani Named ECAC Division III Co-Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine), a member of the
University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team, has been named
the Division III Co-Track Athlete of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) in recognition of her performances last weekend at the New
England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships.
The junior standout shared the ECAC weekly track honor with junior Jacqui
Wentz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Division III Co-Field
Athletes of the Week were junior Nikki Hay of Springfield College and sophomore
Monique Riddick of Montclair State University. The weekly awards were announced
Wednesday afternoon.
Artesani helped USM sweep the Alliance and LEC championships for the ninth
consecutive year this past Saturday. In the LEC scoring, she won three titles
taking the gold in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.69 seconds, the 200 meters
in 27.09 and the 400 meters in 1:00.98. It marked the third straight year that
she has won the 200 and 400 events in the LEC.
In the Alliance scoring, which includes teams from the Little East and the
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC), Artesani captured her
third straight 400-meter title, placed second in the 200 meters and came home
fourth in the 55-meter dash.
Southern Maine edged out Westfield State College, 125-112, for the Alliance
title in the closest battle for the team championship since 2003. The Huskies
took the LEC crown by 35 points, 188-153, over runner-up Rhode Island College.
This is the first time in her collegiate career that Artesani has been
recognized by the ECAC.
Southern Maine will compete this weekend in the New England Division III
Championships be staged at the Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin
College in Brunswick, Maine. Artesani is qualified in the 200 and 400 meters,
and is expected to run a leg in the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Artesani, Dumas Receive LEC Weekly Honors

their outstanding performances at the conference championships this past
Saturday.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced that
junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) had been selected as the Women's Track
Athlete of the Week for the third consecutive week, and freshman Bethany Dumas
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) had been tabbed as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
for the second straight week, and fourth time this season.
The pair helped USM sweep the New England Alliance and LEC championships
for the ninth consecutive year. The Huskies edged out Westfield State College,
125-112, in the closest battle for the Alliance title since 2003. The Alliance
meet consists of schools representing the Massachusetts State College Athletic
Conference (MASCAC) and the LEC. The Huskies took the LEC crown by 35 points,
188-153, over runner-up Rhode Island College.
Artesani had another big day, winning the Alliance 400-meter title for the
third straight year with her time of 1 minute, 0.98 seconds. She was second in
the 200 meters with a time of 27.09, and fourth in the 55-meter dash in 7.69.
Artesani was the LEC champion in all three events.
Dumas had a record-setting performance in winning the pole vault, clearing
3.66 meters (12-0) to set a school and meet record. She broke the records
(school - 11-9 3/4 and meet - 11-7) set by four-time Alliance champion and
former All-American Melissa Bellemore in February 2006. Dumas also scored in
the 200 meters (seventh in the Alliance, second in LEC) with a time of 27.51 and
in the long jump (sixth in LEC) after jumping 4.74 meters (15-6 1/2).
Southern Maine will be in competition this Saturday (11:00 a.m.) at the New
England Division III Championships being held at Bowdoin College.

USM Sweeps N.E. Alliance and LEC Titles for Ninth Straight Year
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
and field team pulled off another double Saturday winning the New England
Alliance and Little East Conference championships for the ninth consecutive
year.
The Huskies edged out runner up Westfield State College, 125-112, in the
Alliance meet for the closest team finish since 2003. Rhode Island College was
third with 109 points followed by Worcester State College with 101 points.
The Huskies captured the Little East title over second place Rhode Island
College, 163-133. Keene State College was third with 101 points.
The New England Alliance meet consists of school representing the Little
East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Each conference scores its respective champion from the Alliance
results.
Southern Maine won two Alliance events. Junior Emily Artesani (Orono,
Maine) took the top spot for the third straight year in the 400 meters with her
time of 1 minute, 0.98 seconds. Artesani finished second in the 200 meters with
a time of 27.09 seconds and fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time 7.69.
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) made a big splash in her first
Alliance meet winning the pole vault with a school and meet record height of
3.66 meters (12-0). That height broke the school record of 11-9 3/4 (3.60
meters) set by Melissa Bellemore in February 2006 and the meet record of 11-7
set by Bellemore the same year. Dumas also improved upon her NCAA Division III
provisional qualifying mark.
Others picking up second place finishes were sophomore Hillary Hall
(Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump (1.60 meters/5-3) and junior
Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) in the 3,000 meters (11:03.12).
Earning third place results were sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise,
Idaho) in the pole vault (3.05 meters/10-0), senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon
Falls, Maine/Lisbon) in the triple jump (10.87 meters/35-8), sophomore Carly
Dion (Biddeford, Maine) in the 800 meters (2:25.00) and senior Gabby Cyr (Fort
Kent, Maine) in the mile (5:27.96). Dion was one spot behind Cyr in the mile
(5:28.22).
Southern Maine will send its qualified competitors to the New England
Division III Championships to be held next weekend at Bowdoin College.

Artesani, Dumas Recognized by Little East Conference

indoor track and field team have been recognized by the Little East Conference
for their efforts at the annual State of Maine Championships last weekend.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) has been named the Track Athlete
of the Week for the second consecutive week and freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) was selected as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for the third
time in the last five weeks.
Artesani scored 20 points for USM at the State Championships meet,
finishing second in the 200 meters with a time of 27.62 seconds, second in the
400 meters with a time of 1:00.44, and third in the 55-meter dash after tripping
the timer at 7.98 seconds.
Dumas, who also has been the picked as LEC Field Athlete of the Week
(December 15) and the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week (January 26) in addition
to the three Rookie Field Athlete awards, won the pole vault by clearing 3.36
meters (11-0 1/4), placed third in the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.00
meters (16-5) and finished second in the 55-meter hurdles. Her win in the pole
vault marked the eighth consecutive year that a USM competitor has won the
event.
Southern Maine finished fourth in the meet compiling 87 points. Bowdoin
College won the team title with 220 points.
The Huskies return to competition this Saturday (11:30 a.m.) when the New
England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships are held at the USM
Field House.

Hall, Dumas Win Individual Titles at State Meet
LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak
Valley) and freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) won individual titles
in the long jump and pole vault respectively for the University of Southern
Maine at the annual State of Maine Championships held Friday night at Bates
College.
Hall took the top spot in the high jump clearing 1.58 meters (5-2 1/4).
Dumas won the pole vault with a height of 3.36 meters (11-0 1/4). This is the
eighth straight year that a USM competitor has won the pole vault.
Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) scored 20 points for the Huskies
taking second place in the 200 meters (27.62) and 400 meters (1:00.44) and a
fourth in the 55-meter dash (7.98). Dumas added a second place finish in the
55-meter hurdles (9.09) and was third in the long jump with a season best mark
of 5.00 meters (16-5) to tally 24 points.
Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) gave USM a 1-2 finish in the
pole vault, taking the runner-up spot with a height of 2.89 meters (9-5 3/4).
Other competitors scoring with personal best efforts included senior Katie
Day (Hampden, Maine) who was sixth in the weight throw (13.23 meters/43-5),
sophomore Rachael Fisk (Kennebunk, Maine) who took fifth in the shot put (10.33
meters/34-3 1/2), and sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) who was fourth in
the 1,000 meters (3:12.88).
Bowdoin College won the team title scoring 220 points, easily outdistancing
Bates which had 146. Colby College took third with 119 points followed by USM
with 87 points.

Emily Artesani Named LEC Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) of the University
of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team has been named the Little
East Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the week of January 26 through
February 1. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East, made the
announcement this afternoon.
This is the first time this season, and the fifth time in her career, that
Artesani has been recognized by the Little East as its Track Athlete of the
Week.
At the USM Coed Invitational last Saturday, Artesani won two events to help
the Huskies finish second among the six teams competing. She won the 55-meter
dash with a personal-best time of 7.58 seconds in the finals, and later won the
200 meters with a time of 26.75.
Southern Maine tallied 173.50 points to take the runner-up spot behind
Bates College which scored 219 points. Smith College was third with 113 points.
The Huskies will compete this Friday evening (6:00 p.m.) at the annual
State of Maine Championships being held at Bates College.

USM Finishes Second at USM Coed Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) won two events
Saturday to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and
field team's performance at the USM Coed Invitational held at the Costello
Sports Complex.
The Huskies finished second in the six-team event scoring 173.50 points.
Bates College took the top honor with 219 points. Smith College was third with
113 points.
Artesani raced her way to victories in the 55-meter dash with a time of
7.58 seconds and the 200 meters tripping the timer at 26.75 seconds. Artesani's
times qualified her for the New England Division III Championships in February,
and she also qualified in the 200 for the ECAC Championships in March.
Other individual event winners for USM included sophomore Carly Dion
(Biddeford, Maine) in the 600 meters with a time of 1:44.23, junior Sarah Myrick
(Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) in the 800 meters with her time of 2:38.99,
and sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump
with a personal best leap of 1.60 meters (5-3).
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) picked up a pair of second
place finishes, She took second in the pole vault clearing 11-6 (3.50 meters)
and the long jump with a leap of 4.89 meters (16-0 1/2).
Senior Anna Biasin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) took second in the 55-
meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds, senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls,
Maine/Lisbon) was second in the triple jump (34-7 3/4), first-year thrower
Rachael Fisk (Kennebunk, Maine) placed second in the shot put (33-11 1/2) and
sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) was third in the pole vault (9-6).
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday evening (6:00 p.m.) when it
travels to Bates College for the annual State of Maine Championships.

Dumas Named LEC Rookie Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the fourth time this winter, University of Southern
Maine freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) has been recognized by the
Little East Conference as one of its four weekly award winners.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced
today that Dumas had been selected as the LEC Rookie Track Athlete of the Week
for her performance Saturday at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational held at
Brandeis University. This is the third different weekly award for Dumas who
previously had been named the LEC Field Athlete of the Week on December 15, and
the past two weeks (January 12 and 19) was the LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the
Week.
At the Poyau Memorial Invitational, Dumas showed her versatility accounting
for 17 of the Huskies 38 points. The third seed heading into the finals of the
55-meter hurdles, Dumas won the event with a season-best time of 8.90 seconds.
She later finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.73 seconds. Dumas
also scored two points in the long jump with her seventh place finished after
jumping 4.71 meters (15-5 1/2).
Southern Maine finished sixth among the nine teams competing at the Poyau
Invitational.
On Friday night, Dumas competed in her best event, the pole vault, at
Boston University's Terrier Classic and finished tied for eighth place after
clearing 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4). Dumas, who is provisionally qualified for the
NCAA Division III national championships meet in March, is ranked sixth
nationally according to the latest performance list at Raceberryjam.com
The Huskies host their first home meet of the season, the USM Co-ed
Invitational, this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the USM Field House.

Southern Maine Finishes Sixth at Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Paced by freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony),
the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team finished
sixth Saturday at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational held at Brandeis
University.
Dumas, the Huskies outstanding first-year pole vaulter, showed her
versatility Saturday winning the 55-meter dash and placing in two other events.
In the hurdles, Dumas cruised to a win in her trials heat, and then came back in
the finals to win the event with a time of 8.90 seconds. She also placed fourth
in the 200 meters with her time of 27.73, and was seventh in the long jump with
a leap of 4.71 meters (15-5 1/2). Dumas did not compete in the pole vault
Saturday, a day after she competed in that event at the Terrier Classic in
Boston.
Freshman thrower Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) scored in two events,
taking fourth in the weight throw with a personal best effort of 13.06 meters
(42-10 1/4) and was eighth in the shot put with a heave of 10.37 meters (34-0
1/4).
Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) was third in the pole vault
clearing 2.99 meters (9-9 3/4).
Senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) picked up a fifth place
finish in the triple jump with a jump of 10.08 meters (33-1).
Bowdoin College edged host Brandeis, 157-154, for the team title among the
nine teams competing. Amherst College was third with 110 points, followed by
Bates College with 102 points and Colby College with 80 points. USM finished
with 38 points.
Southern Maine will host its first home event of the indoor season, the USM
Co-ed Invitational, next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the USM Field House.

Five USM Athletes Compete at Terrier Classic
BOSTON -- Five members of the University of Southern Maine women's indoor
track and field team competed Friday at the Terrier Classic held at the Track
and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University.
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) tied for eighth place in the
pole vault clearing 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4). Sophomore Christina Connolly
(Boise, Idaho) also competed, crossing the bar at 2.75 meters (9-0 1/4).
Sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) tied for 18th
place in the high jump with a jump of 1.55 meters (5-1).
Senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) competed in the long
jump and triple jump. She had a mark of 4.53 meters (14-10 1/2) in the long
jump and 10.25 meters (33-7 1/2) in the triple jump.
Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) ran the 400 meters and posted a time
of 1 minute, 1.26 seconds to place 36th among the 76 competitors.
The Huskies will be in action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when they
participate in the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational at Brandeis University.

Bethany Dumas Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this season, University of Southern
Maine freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) has been recognized by the
Little East Conference for her outstanding performance. Jonathan Harper,
commissioner of the Little East Conference, announced today that Dumas was named
conference's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for the period of January 12-18.
This is the second straight week that Dumas has been tabbed as the LEC
Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. She was also picked as the Field Athlete of
the Week on December 15.
Competing at the Sorlein Invitational held last Friday at the University of
Rhode Island, Dumas won the pole vault by clearing a season-best 3.53 meters
(11-7). That height improves her NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark,
and ranks her second in the nation according to the latest list of qualifiers
posted at Apple RaceberryJam (www.raceberryjam.com).
Dumas also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 4.82 meters (15-9
3/4) and posted a time of 9.18 seconds (11th quickest) in the 55-meter hurdles.
The Sorlein Invitational features teams from all three NCAA divisions.
This weekend, selected team members will head to Boston on Friday to take
part in the Terrier Classic at Boston University, then join their teammates on
Saturday (12:00 p.m.) competing in the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational at
Brandeis University.

Dumas Wins Pole Vault at Sorlein Invitational
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) won the
pole vault Friday highlighting the University of Southern Maine women's indoor
track and field team's efforts at the Sorlein Invitational held at the
University of Rhode Island.
Dumas soared 3.53 meters (11-7) to win the event and improve her previous
NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3.49 meters (11-5 1/4). Dumas mark on
Friday is less than three inches off the school record set by former All-
American Melissa Bellemore in February 2006. Dumas also posted a time of 9.18
seconds in the 55-meter hurdles trials (11th quickest), and was fifth in the
long jump with a leap of 4.82 meters (15-9 3/4).
Rookie thrower Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) continued her rapid
improvement in the 20-lb. weight throw with a personal best mark of 11.91 meters
(39-1) for a ninth place finish in the non-team scoring event that features
schools from all three NCAA divisions.
Sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) tied for eighth
place in the high jump clearing 1.52 meters (4-11 3/4). Senior Anna Biasin
(Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) also had an eighth place finish in the long jump
covering 4.62 meters (15-2). Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) posted a
top eight finish in the mile with a time of 5:26.48.
A select group of USM competitors will travel to Boston next Friday to
participate in the Terrier Classic at Boston University. The team will next be
in action the next day at the Brandeis Invitational.

Hall, Dumas Recognized by LEC
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley)
and freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the University of Southern
Maine women's indoor track and field team have been recognized by the Little
East Conference for their performances Sunday at the 40th Annual Dartmouth
College Relays.
Jonathan Harper, the commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Hall was selected as the Field Athlete of the Week and Dumas was
picked as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. This is this first time that
Hall has received a weekly citation from the LEC. Dumas was previously selected
as the LEC Field Athlete of the Week on December 15.
Hall soared to a personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters (5-2
1/4), to tie for sixth place in the competition. That jump also qualified her
for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships in
March, and improved her New England Division III Championships qualification
mark by eight centimeters.
Dumas, competing in the pole vault, also tied for sixth place with an
effort of 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4). She previously qualified for the N.E.
Division III Championships, the NEIcAAA New England Championships (all
divisions) and ECAC Championships, and is provisionally qualified for the NCAA
Division III National Championships.
Hall and Dumas combined to score the Huskies lone point at this weekend's
meet.
The Huskies will travel to the University of Rhode Island (Kingston, R.I.)
this Friday (1:00 p.m.) to participate in the Sorlien Invitational.

USM Competes at Dartmouth Relays
HANOVER, N.H. -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
and field team returned to competition after a four-week layoff Sunday
competing at the 40th Annual Dartmouth College Relays held in Hanover, N.H.
The Huskies scored one point to tie with the Hopkinton Patriots for 22nd
place among the teams scoring. Boston College took the team championship
with 80 points, edging out host Dartmouth which tallied 73 points.
Northeastern University was third with 64.50 points. The University of
Ottawa, with 33 points, and the Ottawa Lions, with 26 points, round out the
top five teams.
Scoring a half point each for USM were freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) in the pole vault and sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump. Dumas tied for sixth place in the
pole vault clearing 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4) while Hall tied for sixth in the
high jump after clearing a personal best 1.58 meters (5-2 1/4).
Other notable performances turned in Sunday included a ninth place
result for senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) in the triple
jump with a leap of 10.68 meters (35-0 1/2) and senior Katie Day (Hampden,
Maine/Hampden Academy) with a 12th place finish in the 20-lb. weight throw
after a personal best throw of 11.77 meters (38-7 1/2).
Southern Maine travels to Kingston, R.I., on Friday to compete at the

In her first collegiate meet, Dumas won the pole vault competition at the
Preseason Invitational held Saturday at Bowdoin College. Dumas cleared 3.49
meters (11-5 1/4), a mark that provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Division
III National Championships in March. She also qualified for the New England
Division III Championships and the NEIcAAA New England Championships (all
divisions) in February, and the ECAC Division III Championships in March.
In addition to winning the pole vault, Dumas, who also was named the Little
East Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Monday, placed second in

Dumas Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championships
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the
University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team opened her
collegiate career in fine fashion Saturday at the season-opening Preseason
Invitational held at Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College,
winning the pole vault with an NCAA Division III Championship provisional
qualifying mark.
Dumas won the event by clearing 3.49 meters (11-5 1/4), surpassing the NCAA
provisional qualifying standard of 3.45 meters (11-3 3/4). Dumas also qualified
for the New England Division III Championships in February and the ECAC Division
III Championships in March. She also took second place in the 55-meter hurdles
with a time of 9.71 seconds.
Other winners for USM included junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) in the
400 meters with a time of 1:02.00 and sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldeboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters (4-11).
Eight Huskies posted New England Division III Championships qualifying
marks in the meet. In addition to Dumas, Artesani (200 and 400), and Hall,
others qualifying were sophomore Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) in
the 400 (1:04.03), freshman Jackie Routhier-Fenton (South Berwick,
Maine/Marshwood) in the 55-meter dash (7.78), freshman Hannah Patterson
(Londonderry, N.H.) in the shot put (10.80 meters/35-5 1/4), senior Emily
Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) in the triple jump (10.09 meters/33-1 1/4)
and sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) in the pole vault (2.89
meters/9-5 3/4).
Bowdoin won the meet with 80 points while Southern Maine tallied 42.
Southern Maine will take a break for semester exams and the holidays before
returning to competition on January 10 at the Dartmouth Relays.
