USM Names Lauren Reid Women's Lacrosse Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics recently announced the hiring of Lauren Reid as head coach for women' lacrosse. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the announcement. Reid succeeds Sue Frost who resigned during the summer to take a similar position at the University of New England. Reid becomes the fifth head coach in the history of the program (1972-79; 2001-present). A four-year letter winner and high school All-American at Deering HS (1999- 2002), Reid went to the University of Maryland for a year, playing on the Terrapins' squad that advanced to the NCAA Division I semifinals in 2003. Reid later transferred to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and played three seasons with the Minutemen. She completed her undergraduate degree in hospitality and tourism management at UMass Amherst in 2007. "I am extremely excited about being a part of USM Athletics and look forward to building a consistently strong women's lacrosse program here. I hope to instill a whole new level of play with our athletes that sets an aggressive tone for many seasons to come," commented Reid. "Lauren will be a great addition to our coaching staff. I fully expect that she will bring our women's lacrosse program to a new level of performance," said Bean. "She earned high school All-American honors at Deering and played at the very highest level of intercollegiate lacrosse competition at Maryland and UMass. She has played for some of the nation's top coaches and has developed a sound philosophy, a deep knowledge of the sport, and the ability to teach the game in a most effective manner. Lauren has impressed me with her ability to communicate, her organizational skills, and her intense passion for the game. I am fully confident that she will build our program to be among the region's most respected". Prior to taking the position at USM, Reid served as head coach of the Deering High School junior varsity girls squad and as an assistant to the varsity team in 2008. She also served as the girls coach at Belchertown (Mass.) High School in 2007. Southern Maine finished the 2008 season 8-9 overall, 5-1 in the Little East Conference, and advanced to the LEC championship game. USM is scheduled to open its 2009 season hosting Colby College on March 17. Sue Frost Leaves USM
GORHAM, Maine -- Sue Frost, head coach of women's lacrosse at the University of Southern Maine for the past three years, has resigned to accept a similar position at the University of New England. This past season, Frost guided the Huskies to an 8-9 overall record and a berth in the Little East Conference championship game. She was named the LEC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to a second place finish with a 5-1 mark, their best ever finish in the conference. In her three seasons at USM, Frost compiled a 20-28 record and became the winningest coach in the program's brief history when the Huskies defeated Plymouth State University on April 22. Over the past three seasons, Frost has coached eight players to 11 All-Conference citations, including six this past season, and the past two LEC Rookies of the Year. "Sue's departure leaves us with a big hole to fill in our women's lacrosse program and the department in general," commented Al Bean, Director of Athletics. "She has done an outstanding job in taking the women's lacrosse program to a new level over the past three years. She will be missed and we wish her all the best in the future." Prior to coming to USM in the fall of 2005, Frost served as head coach of the Binghamton University program during its first three varsity seasons. At Binghamton, Frost took over a program that was transitioning from a club team to an NCAA Division I program in the America East Conference. In her three seasons as the head coach, she compiled a 5-33 overall record, including a 4-10 mark in the 2004 season. A 1997 graduate of Marist College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) with a degree in English and a minor on psychology, Frost played for the Red Foxes first varsity team in 1997 participating in all 13 games and served as team captain. She began her coaching career as an assistant lacrosse coach in the Farmingdale, N.Y., School District. After spending one season in that capacity, she moved to Molloy College (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) as head coach of the women's lacrosse club team. Before accepting the Binghamton position in 2002, Frost spent one season as the women's lacrosse coach at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. She guided the Wolverines to a 6-5 overall record in her one season there. Frost also spent one year (2004-2005) at Old Westbury College (Old Westbury, N.Y.) serving as the Sports Information Director and Director of NCAA Compliance.
