Valastro, Morin and Christensen Tabbed USM Wrestling Captains
Huskies Open Season This Weekend at Ithaca Invitational
Welcome Nationally Recognized Freshman Class
GORHAM, Maine – Senior Stephen Valastro (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central)
and juniors Doug Christensen (Middletown, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and Mike Morin
(Fryeburg, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) have been named tri-captains of the 2008-
2009 University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team. The announcement was
made by sixth-year head coach Joe Pistone as the Huskies prepare for their
season opening event at the Ithaca College Invitational Saturday and Sunday
(10:00 a.m.)
Pistone, the 2008 Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Coach of the Year, said
of his captains trio, “Steve, Doug and Mike are talented and experienced
wrestlers. Their leadership on and off the mat will be vital to our team’s
success; each of them has demonstrated the desire, commitment and qualities
necessary to achieve at a high level.”
Wrestling at 149-pounds Christensen earned an overall record of 5-6
during the season for the Huskies. In dual meet matches, Christensen scored a
total of 15 points to help USM to an 11-7-1 overall record during the season.
In the 2008 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championship Christensen
battled his way to a sixth place finish.
Valastro is in his second turn as one of the Huskies’ captains. Earning
first team Pilgrim League All-Star honors for the second time in his career
(2007, 2008), Valastro compiled a solid overall record of 19-5 last season
including eight wins by fall. During his sophomore season, Valastro, the second
wrestler in the history of the Southern Maine program to qualify for the NCAA
National Championships, ended his sophomore campaign with a 28-10 overall record
that included 13 pins. Earning All-New England honors as a sophomore (2007),
Valastro qualified for the NCAA tournament by winning the 133-pound bracket at
the NEWA Championships. In a dominating performance, Valastro swept through his
competition at the championship with a 5-0 record, including a pin, two
technical falls a decision and a major decision.
Coming off of an outstanding 2007-2008 season, Morin became just the third
wrestler in the history of the USM program to qualify for the NCAA National
Championship tournament after gutting his way to a first-place finish in the
165-pound bracket at the 2008 NEWA Championship. Morin, who captured the
championship in a thrilling 6-4 overtime decision, earned All-New England and
Pilgrim League honorable mention honors concluding his season with a remarkable
30-6 record that included five wins by technical fall and four pins. Both
Valastro and Morin are ranked 10th individually in their respective weight class
by the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Brute – Adidas
Individual Rankings preseason poll (Oct. 27, 2008).
The Huskies return 11 veterans from last season that saw USM earn its
highest point total in the history of the program at the NEWA Championship.
Southern Maine placed eighth in the 15-team event and scored 60.5 points. Among
those veterans returning to the fray for USM is junior Matt Ulrich (Garfield,
N.J.). Ulrich finished third in the 141-pound bracket at the NEWA Championship
earning All-New England honors.
Along with its 11 returners, USM adds a solid recruiting class to its
roster. USM’s class of 2012 has been recognized nationally by Intermat as one of
the top incoming classes in the country. Intermatwrestle.com is a national
amateur wrestling site providing news to wrestling fans, parents, wrestlers and
coaches. It is the first time in the 11-year history of the sport at Southern
Maine that one of its recruiting classes has been recognized nationally. USM
began sponsoring wrestling as a varsity sport in 1997.
“While we have had exceptional young men attend and compete for the
University of Southern Maine and its wrestling program over the past 11 seasons,
I am pleased that we are welcoming a highly regarded recruiting class to the
mix,” noted Pistone.
Among the newcomers expected to contribute to the Huskies’ fortunes are
freshmen Corbin Decker (Salem, N.H.), Matt Doolittle (Middletown, N.Y.), James
LaMarca (Kittery, ME/Traip Academy), Keith Corley (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central)
and sophomore William Cole (Madbury, N.H.).
Decker, projected to wrestle at 165 pounds, is a three-time New Hampshire
State place winner, while Cole, a 125-pound grappler, is a three-time New
Hampshire State champion. Hailing from New York State, both Doolittle (133
pounds) and Corley (174 pounds) were state champion qualifiers in their high
school careers. LaMarca, one of 11 Mainers on the 25-person USM roster, was a
state champion in his senior season at Traip Academy. He is expected to wrestle
in the 184-pound weight division.
After their season opening event at the Ithaca College Invitational, the
Huskies remain on the road to compete at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov.
15, 10:00 a.m.). USM hosts Bridgewater State in a dual meet (Nov. 19, 6:30
p.m.) before traveling to the Oneonta State Invitational (Nov. 22, 9:30 a.m.) to
close out the month of November.
Southern Maine hosts two events in the month of December beginning with the
Ted Reese Invitational (Dec. 6, 10:00 a.m.) followed by the USM Quad with
Plymouth State University, Roger Williams and American International College.
In January the Huskies travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the WPI
Duals (Jan. 10, 12:00 p.m.), and then host MIT in a dual meet (Jan. 14, 6:00
p.m.) before closing out the month with a pair of away contests at the NEWA
Duals (Jan. 18, 10:00 a.m.) and at Wesleyan for a tri-meet with Johnson and
Wales (Jan. 25, 12:00 p.m.). In February the Huskies travel to Rhode Island
College for a tri-meet with Roger Williams University (Feb. 7, 12:00 p.m.)
before competing in the 2009 NEWA Championships hosted by Springfield College in
Springfield, Mass. (Feb. 21 – 22).
