Four Huskies To Compete in National Championship Events

Four University of Southern Maine student-athletes have earned the right to participate in their sports' NCAA Division III National Championshp contest.  Husky wrestler Daniel Del Gallo is making his third trip to his sport's pinnacle event in La Crosse, Wisconsin, while three USM track & field student-athletes will be competing for national titles in Naperville, Illinois. Junior Ron Helderman of the men's track & field team qualifed in the pole vault for the second straight year, while Husky women's track & field standout seniors Molly Gibeault and Neka Dias will compete in the pole vault and 60-meter hurdles respectively.  Gibeault has previously competed in the pole vault at the 2016 outdoor national championship.  


 

Southern Maine’s Dan Del Gallo Punches Ticket to NCAA National Championship 

BRISTOL, R.I.  – Senior Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) will make his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament, becoming just the second University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestler to make three trips to his sport's pinnacle event, after finishing second in his weight class at the 2017 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship hosted this weekend at Roger Williams University. 

            With his second place finish in the 149-pound bracket, Del Gallo is one of three Huskies' wrestlers to earn All-Region honors.  Senior CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) and freshman Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) also earned all-region status. Luth finished fifth overall at 157 pounds, while Peter Del Gallo placed fourth, narrowly missing out on the third NCAA berth in the 125-pound division.

Helderman, Gibeault and Dias Head to NCAA D3 Championships 

            GORHAM, Maine -- Three University of Southern Maine track and field athletes - junior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) and seniors Molly Gibeault (Brooklyn, Conn./Woodstock Academy) and Neka Dias (San Antonio, Texas/Holmes) - have made the field and will compete for national honors at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships that begin Friday.  The championships are being held at North Central College (Naperville, Ill.).

            Helderman qualified in the men's pole vault indoors for the second straight year.  Gibeault and Dias are making their first trip to the indoor championships.  Gibeault, who went to the outdoor championships last May, will compete in the women's pole vault.  Dias will compete in the women's 60-meter hurdles.  All three will be in competition on Friday.
