RECORD 60 EARN WISE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD

	GORHAM, Maine  -- A record sixty University of Southern Maine student-athletes, cheer-
leaders and student athletic trainers have earned the Department of Athletics' prestigious William B. 
Wise Scholar-Athlete Award for the 1996-97 academic year.
	The Wise Award is presented annually to those student-athletes, cheerleaders and student 
athletic trainers who achieve a 3.0 or better grade point average for the academic year. This year's 
winners represent 15 varsity athletic programs, cheerleading and athletic training.
	The sixty winners will be honored at a reception October 5 at the Kenneth Brooks Student 
Center on the Gorham campus.  The 60 winners represent approximately a quarter of the students 
that comprised the varsity athletic teams, cheerleaders and student athletic trainers in 1996-97. The 
previous record for Wise Award winners was 53 for the 1995-96 academic year.
	Seven student-athletes, Eleanore Anderson (cross country and track), Angel Elderkin 
(basketball and softball), Michelle Fernald (field hockey and softball), Jim Hogan (soccer and ice 
hockey), Julie Plant (basketball and softball), Paula Reed (field hockey and softball), and Mandy 
King (basketball and athletic training), were honored as multi-sport athletes.
	King, who has returned to USM for an extra year of eligibility, is one of just eight student-
athletes in the 10-year history of the award to receive four Wise Awards. Hogan and Heather 
Gilmour (field hockey) are the newest additions to the list of 22 recipients that have earned three 
Wise Awards.
	Since the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award program began with the 1987-88 academic year, a 
total of 384 student-athletes have earned the award. See below for complete list of 1996-97 Wise Award winners.
