Do medical centers have intellectual property rights?

Tissue collection sites typically do not have intellectual property rights for products and materials developed from the tissue collected at their location. Similarly, most repositories do not have intellectual property rights to tissue they store and distribute unless repository researchers are conducting research on the tissue. The Rand Report (see Resources: Human Tissue Repositories) recommends that repositories "use a specific published policy on intellectual property regarding research use of samples from a repository."
