AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, USM Portland campus

Transitions includes 23 paintings, drawings and prints by seven USM Art alumni, selected by juror Virginia Sassman Rose, founder of Portland’s Rose Contemporary Fine Art Gallery.

Unum Great Reading Room, 7th Floor, Glickman Family Library, USM Portland campus

This show is part of a traveling exhibition of more than 100 artists’ books made by international artists from 24 countries. The books and broadsides in this exhibit were made in response to the March 5, 2007 car bomb that exploded on Al-Mutanabbi Street, the ancient street of booksellers, poets and writers, located at the literary and cultural heart of Baghdad, Iraq.

What happened between the progressive Father Flynn and a troubled young boy behind closed doors in a Catholic school in 1964? The truth may set us free -- but how do we get to the truth? This ripped-from-the-headlines drama is a roller coaster of suspicion, accusation, defense, paranoia, persecution and equivocation. And that most troubling and nagging of human emotions: Doubt.

Irina Muresanu, Boston-based Romanian-American violinist, is a top-prize winner of numerous international violin competitions, including the Queen Elizabeth Violin, Montreal International and Washington International. Muresanu will work with USM School of Music violin students in her Master Class.

Students from all disciplines and the general public are welcome to attend.

Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Lehmann
USM Opera Workshop, directed by Ellen Chickering

The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra will performan Edward Grieg's From Holberg's Time and Alan Hovhaness’ Psalm and Fugue, which will be guest conducted by Sam Lyons, senior USM music education major. Singers from the USM Opera Workshop will join the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra to present highlights from George Frideric Handel’s baroque opera Acis and Galatea.
